I have been an avid reader of Zippy since his underground days in the 70's. I will always automatically buy anything Zippy. BUT..

Bill Griffith is starting to look like he needs a vacation with the endlessly repeated word repetition and screwball business sign gags. To punish readers further, he lists copious footnotes on these things. My mind blowing hippy has grown up to be an urban scholar!

Sigh... but I still Love Zippy. And Zerbina!

I hope D. Johnson can sing, cause he ain't no writer!!! I only wish I could get my ill spent time reading it returned to me.. It is of nearly complete garbage, save a liner for my cat box. I mourn the trees that were sacrificed for this waste...

It wasnt even a good story.......2004-04-23

I bought this book thinking that perhaps a person who had also served as an enlisted man and as an officer, in the same U.S. Navy that I did, would have some interesting experiences to share that would recall some good and perhaps even the bad times we all experience in 20 or more years service to our country.

Instead, this was a totally self-serving book with mostly disparaging or insulting stories about every supervisor, officer or enlisted, for whom the author had ever served. It focuses on the self-proclaimed ability of the author to have had all the answers, despite the greater experience of his seniors, who were mostly ignorant or stubborn, or both.

This book is a jumble of incidents presented in no apparent order, either chronologically or by subject. Even the Navy-experienced reader is confused by the jumping about in time and place. In an apparent attempt to mask the completely self-serving nature of the book, a few completely unrelated stories are thrown in that had been donated by other sailors of different eras. Even these stories are unremarkable in their value or interest.

I stayed the course and finished the book, only in the hope that I would find some redeeming point of social value in it. I hoped to possibly find a place where I could stop and say, "Yes, this fellow served in the same U. S. Navy that I did." I did not find that. Failing that, at least I could publish an honest review. A review that would hopefully save someone else the pain of reading this poorly written, poorly presented, poorly edited, over-priced epistle.

I have purchased thousands of hardback books in my 40-odd years of life as I thoroughly enjoy reading.....and I rarely pass up a book about the Navy. I have bookcases full of books many of which I read over and over again.

I have donated my old books, I have given books away to friends, but this is the first book that I have ever literally thrown in the trash when I completed reading it.

Needless to say, I do not recommend this book.

Worth a read........2007-08-23

Considering Nessus is one of the best free network monitoring tools on the market, this is a perfect book to get to start working with Network Systems Auditing. For people that have a decent working knowledge with multi-platforms and Networking, this book is a good way to get your feet wet with to start preparing for your CISA Cert.

Excellent primer for new Nessus users.......2005-07-26

A good source for experienced users and a must read for novices.

At times the syntax of this book leaves a bit to be desired (the editors could have done a better job at polishing the final product). You cannot, however get a better source for Nessus information than the creator himself, who is a contributor to the book.

I would highly reccomend this book.

The purpose of Nessus is to provide an Open Source Solution for network auditing on all Unix like systems. This book not only details using Nessus but also comes with a CD containing the program, as well as Ethereal, Snort, and Newt (a port of the program to the Windows environment).

What is a network assessment? At its basic level it is an attempt to detect a live system and then identify the computing environment, services, applications, and vulnerabilities on that system. Basically there are two types of assessment - internal and external. An internal assessment is done over the local network and external is done from outside the LAN. Nessus will do both types and the book details how to do either, or both of them.

The authors do an excellent job of detailing installation, setup, and how to interpret the results of a scan as well as various factors that can affect the report. One of the parts not to be missed is the discussion of not only the benefits but also the potential problems of scanning your system. Some of the vulnerability types scanned for include buffer overflows, default passwords, backdoors, information leaks, and denial of service.

The Nessus scripting language is covered in detail in Appendix A instead of the main portion of the book; a choice I appreciated very much as it allowed the flow of the book to not be interrupted by such a highly technical section. With Open Source products there generally is no organized technical support phone number you can call of help. So, the authors include information on how to get help via the Nessus User Community, mailing lists, and archives.

Nessus Network Auditing is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in auditing their network to find potential problems before they become reality.

This book is the only game in town when it comes to nessus. The information it contains should be regarded as mandatory knowledge for those running nessus in a professional environment. This book is about more than just nessus. It is about an approach to network auditing and vulnerability assessment.

The first few chapters are largely introductory and cover vulnerability assessment and nessus basics. The next few chapters cover more basics including running a scan, interpreting results, and vulnerability types.

The latter chapters cover areas of interest to an experienced nessus user. The chapter on false positives begs to be read. The authors offer a logical approach to dealing with false positives that most organizations lack. The remaining chapters detail the inner workings of nessus (knowledge base, nasl, plugin writing), enterprise scanning, and the nessus user community.

This book provides a through explanation of the tool. Enough information is given to start writing your own custom security checks. However, I did find myself wanting for a little more technical substance (especially in the plug-in writing/nasl area), but maybe that's just me. This book has a decent index that helps with reference. This book will benefit the beginner and experienced user alike.

Outstanding new Marxist thinker.......2006-06-06

This volume presupposes some familiarity with leftist theories of the French Revolution. A generation ago, Alfred Cobban undermined the standard Marxist "bourgeois revolution" interpretation of the revolution, but offered little in its place. Around 1990, George Comninel examined the wreckage and began to outline new directions. This is one of the more promising works in the Marxist tradition in recent years, and will hopefully be followed by a more "constructive" volume that fully rethinks the French Revolution and its impact on theory and practice today.

A classic introduction to lace and lacemaking........2001-01-10

This is a must book for folks, who want to learn about lace, because they inherited lace, found lace at a garage sale, stumbled across a lace web-site, saw a lacemaking demonstration, or attended a lace guild meeting, asking what do I do now?

This book, with its beautiful and clear illustrations, introduces these "tourists", as well as experienced lacemakers, to the subject of real lace, covering basic bobbin, needle and crochet lace lore, and how machines make lace. Kurella points out some of the limitations of machines as lacemakers.

Kurella provides clear written descriptions and photographs comparing hand and machine versions of bobbin lace, needlelace, and Irish crochet lace. Battenberg lace, a curious combination of machine produced tape and hand work, is also discussed.

This book is essentially an extended academic paper supporting this professor's argument for the causes of and correlations with creativity in science. The main idea of the book is that creativity in science is a function of chance, logic, genius, and zeitgeist. Simonton argues that the other 3 are included under the heading of chance. This is a very interesting idea because the conventional wisdom is that genius is the principal player in scientific creativity, and many would not be happy with suggestions otherwise.
The main theory proposed by Simonton is that creative genius is simply a product of random and possibly unrelated ideas being combined in an interesting way through the combinatorial process. Simonton then makes a series of assumptions. From his theory and the assumptions, he concludes the existence of the equal-odds rule, which has been supported by empirical data. The equal-odds rule says that the average publication of any particular scientist does not have any statistically different chance of having more of an impact than any other scientist's average publication. In other words, those scientists who create publications with the most impact, also create publications with the least impact, and when great publications that make a huge impact are created, it is just a result of "trying" enough times. This is an indication that chance plays a larger role in scientific creativity than previously theorized.
This book is filled with interesting quotes. One of my favorites is from a famous physicist named Bohr speaking about another theory. He says, "we are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question which divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct. My own feeling is that it is not crazy enough." This is an example of the kind of traits present in creative scientific people. The chart on the next page summarizes Simonton's findings in relation to the development, birth order, and disposition of creative minds in a concise way. As you may notice from the figure, Simonton also makes distinctions between artistic and scientific creativity. He argues that since logic is a requirement for all scientific creativity, and a detriment to most artistic creativity, these two types of creativity are very different. In addition, it is interesting to note that if a certain scientist never existed, their work would be replaced eventually be something similar, while this is not true for artists. He also argues that there is a stronger correlation in artistic creativity, with psychopathology, unconventional development, and other aspects on the figure below that lead to more random inputs in the combinatorial process.
