I specifically looked for books in English only and I bought this book because under the language/decription section it was listed: English but it turned out to be in Spanish. Even the title was in English after the slash. I can't read it now even the condition of the book is very good. It's like owning a new beautiful outfit with a wrong size. I'm very disappointed.

Ojala fuera posible conseguir muchas mas historias nuevas. Esta es excelente!!!

          Book Description

Over the past half-century, bookselling, like many retail industries, has evolved from an arena dominated by independent bookstores to one in which chain stores have significant market share. And as in other areas of retail, this transformation has often been a less-than-smooth process. This has been especially pronounced in bookselling, argues Laura J. Miller, because more than most other consumer goods, books are the focus of passionate debate. What drives that debate? And why do so many people believe that bookselling should be immune to questions of profit?

In Reluctant Capitalists, Miller looks at a century of book retailing, demonstrating that the independent/chain dynamic is not entirely new. It began one hundred years ago when department stores began selling books, continued through the 1960s with the emergence of national chain stores, and exploded with the formation of “superstores” in the 1990s. The advent of the Internet has further spurred tremendous changes in how booksellers approach their business. All of these changes have met resistance from book professionals and readers who believe that the book business should somehow be “above” market forces and instead embrace more noble priorities.

Miller uses interviews with bookstore customers and members of the book industry to explain why books evoke such distinct and heated reactions. She reveals why customers have such fierce loyalty to certain bookstores and why they identify so strongly with different types of books. In the process, she also teases out the meanings of retailing and consumption in American culture at large, underscoring her point that any type of consumer behavior is inevitably political, with consequences for communities as well as commercial institutions.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Informative and thought provoking.......2006-12-29

A very well-done study of the book selling industry. So clever to use books as a focal point for a discussion of the complexities of buying and selling. Refreshingly free of jargon, though there are occasional traces of academic production (I intend to show in the next chapter ...). But this is minor given the generally clear-headed writing and thinking the author displays. Along with all the fascinating information about the development of book selling, as a vocation and as mere commodity pushing, she has included excellent reflections on the nature of the consumer and the consumer's choices to exhibit pure marketplace rationality vs. politically informed cultural activity.

Personally, I remain caught in the complexities of these choices: I bought this book on Amazon but feel it's critical to support independent bookstores (I do that too). I've just returned from a cross country trip and it's dreary out there in places that have no independents. Coincidentally they seem to be places that have no city centers, no architecture, no newspapers, few cultural events ..., nothing but cars and roads and big box stores.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for booklovers concerned about the "bookstore wars".......2006-11-13

Booklovers who wouldn't usually be inclined to read something about the bookselling industry will appreciate this detailed account of the business, particularly in light of the ongoing -- and often ruinous -- competition between independent bookstores, the mega-chains, the "big box" retailers and the online giants.

          5 out of 5 stars A very interesting view.......2006-08-17

The author looks a bookselling and especially book buying from a very sophisticated standpoint taking many economic, social, and cultural factors into account. The idea that the book both is and isn't a commodity like any other is examined up down and sideways. One interesting point: the rise of giants Borders and Barnes and Noble has made buying a book an entertainment experience (e.g., people go on dates at Borders!).

5 out of 5 stars A history of the contested practice of selling books .......2006-07-04

Reluctant Capitalists: Bookselling And The Culture Of Consumption holds the ability to appeal beyond the usual business reader, moving into the realm of book enthusiasts and booksellers alike. Book buyers often reject chain stores and consider any association between books and mass marketing unacceptable: so why is it that other chains have gained wide popularity while the chain bookstore's image struggles? Reluctant Capitalists examines this phenomenon, providing a history of the contested practice of selling books and surveying the rise of chains, mega-chains, and standing conflicts between chains and the small bookseller. Ideals and politics as well as book-buying habits and choices are analyzed in chapters which interview both book reader and major industry players.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for IPSC.......2007-07-29

Having read a few books on IPSC shooting like Brian Enos and Saul Kirsch I saw this book and decided to have a read, I was skeptical at first as it was written a in the early 90s and I though it might be a little dated. I'm happy to say my fears were unfounded this is a great book for IPSC along with the books by the authors mentioned above. This book also has chapters on the rifle and shotgun which is something not often found in these books so I found it doubly helpful as a 3 Gun enthusiast.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-06-15

Do not pay these outrageous prices - Brownells still list this publication in stock around $20. I would also recommend Surgical Speed Shooting by Stanford - do not let "gunfight" in the subtitle put you off.

5 out of 5 stars Less Expensive Source.......2004-02-06

          J. Michael Plaxco's book can be found at www.brownells.com for $20 plus shipping. Tad cheaper than almost $200 offered on the Amazon's site.

5 out of 5 stars Superb book on practical pistol shooting........1999-05-02

Author J. Michael Plaxco is an accomplished IPSC style shooter, a discipline which ostensibly focuses on more "practical" concerns than more static and purely accuracy oriented target disciplines. IPSC focuses on both speed and accuracy in a variety of situations.

Keeping that background in mind, Plaxco offers an excellent book that will give the reader both practical ways of improving their performance and a broad based theoretical approach to sports psychology and general performance enhancement. Reading and applying the many lessons in this book will dramatically enhance the skills of a tactical, military, law enforcement, or competitive shooter.

The book is written in an accessible and readable style, all the photographs are exceptional, and the layout is sensible. While I do not recommend this book for a beginner, it is an excellent source for someone who has had some basic defensive training skills. Police officers who are serious about developing their skills beyond the pathetic level learned in academy will profit more from this book than any other I can think of... IF THEY APPLY THE PRACTICE ROUTINES.

With that being said, this is not merely a book you read once. This is a book you read, you experiment with, you read again, experiment with, highlight, underline, and read some more. This is a guidebook to the self development and enhancement of motorskills. It's not just a bunch of random pointers, tricks, and insights.

Aimed at those with some previous programming experience, Inside C# shows developers the unique strengths, advantages, and tips for coding with C#. This fast-paced and in-depth tutorial will let you use Microsoft's newest programming language on the emerging .NET platform successfully.

The outstanding strength of this text is its in-depth language tutorial on C#, with complete coverage of basic and advanced object-oriented programming techniques. New language features like properties, indexers, and attributes get full coverage, alongside the basics of using classes and inheritance.

The book relies on using Visual Studio 6.0 and the command-line .NET tools for running programs. (Visual Studio.NET, the next version of Visual Studio, was unavailable when the book was written.) First to market with an in-depth language tutorial, the focus of Inside C# is on basic and advanced language features. By viewing generated code (using the ILDASM disassembler tool), the author examines how class design features work under the hood.

The language tutorial digs into features, beginning with a "Hello, World" program and delving into class design features before moving on to more basic features like expressions, operators, and flow control. This sequence makes the book best suited to the experienced developer, since some excellent in-depth material on the most advanced features of C# is presented before the basics of the language. Throughout, you'll learn the newest features of the language, how to use it, and a sense of its personality.

There's also plenty of material on the underlying Microsoft .NET platform, from the basics of the Common Language Runtime (CLR) to assemblies (used to deploy .NET applications), plus getting older COM components to interoperate with the newer .NET standard.

For anyone who's programmed before and wants to learn C# quickly, this in-depth guide anchored with plenty of short, effective examples provides what you need. Inside C# shows off the unique strengths of this new and exciting language and provides a solid introduction to the .NET platform. --Richard Dragan

          4 out of 5 stars A good reference.......2005-04-14

When I need to explain an document OO concepts in a C# perspective, this book is a great help in most situations. If you need in deepth knowledge of the code DOM etc. you are stock.
Still it is the only generel C# book that has survived as a part of my .NET book collection.

4 out of 5 stars Should be renamed.......2004-07-14

This is actually an introduction to C#, good for beginners, but not for people who already have a lot of experience on other languages like C++. Title is misleading.

          5 out of 5 stars A great book for intermediate/advanced developers.......2004-05-04

As others have mentioned, this book is not aimed at new developers. However, if you are an intermediate or advanced developers, this is a great book for learning C# in depth. One thing I found very useful is that it often refers to C++ or Java to point out differences. This is very important in areas where C# works differently, like calling virtual functions from constructors.

The book shows lots of MSIL for the examples. Although there's a table of the MSIL commands in the back, there's not enough information in this book for these to be comletely understandable. You'll need to learn more about the CLR and MSIL elsewhere for these to really be helpful.

A wide range of topics are covered, including some advanced topics like COM interop. There is also a chapter on security, although I felt it lumped too many topics together there without going into enough depth on them.

The biggest problem I had with the book was the huge number of typos and misprints. I noticed another reviewer said that many of the examples didn't compile. This could have been one of the reasons. I was amazed at how many errors I saw in the code, most of which looked like simple typos.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I could ask for.......2004-05-04

For C# developers this book should be required reading. It will teach you to think in C#, to see the answers to problems without writing a line of code.

Archer writes in a very straightforward and easy style. I found the book hard to put down. The explanations are clear and concise.

The examples are extremely well-done. I learned as much from them as from the book itself. You'll want to work through every one of these - you'll learn tons from them.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Archer title.......2004-03-16

I purchased this book after reading Mr. Archer's Visual C++.NET Bible and am extremely happy with it. I have quite a few C# books and can say without hesitation that this book, Jesse Liberty's and Petzold's SECOND C# book are the only C# books worth owning. You buy those three and you'll be set. I personally use them as follows:

          * Jesse Liberty - Better than Archer in terms of tutorial style writing. Use this book as your first C# book
          * Tom Archer - Awesome reference material and low-level details of the language. Use this book as a reference after finishing Liberty's book
          * Charles Petzold - Great for learning how to write Windows apps with C# - once you've learned the language with Archer & Liberty.

The other great thing about the book is it gives you great ideas for vacations in Colorado. No need to spend a lot of cash on airfare to somewhere else. Forget skiing. Come see the "hidden" treasures that Colorado has to offer. But you'll only discover them if you get the book.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to our knowledge of medieval Jews.......2002-11-22

Author Stefan Reif is Director of the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit at the Cambridge University Library. This book discusses the amazing treasure-trove of documents from Egypt's Cairo Genizah, which yielded several important documents about the Khazars, included writings by famous Jewish personalities like Moses Maimonides and Yehuda HaLevi, and also helps us better understand the daily lives of medieval Jews in subjects as wide ranging as medicine, music, marriage, philosophy, religious practices, and relations with Muslims and Christians. Reif provides capsule histories of the amassing of the Genizah Collection, biographies of the personalities who worked on Genizah research and preservation efforts, and summaries and illustrations of many of the documents contained in the collection.

          Book Description

This biography of Gauss, by far the most comprehensive in English, is the work of a professor of German, G. Waldo Dunnington, who devoted most of his scholarly career to studying the life of Germany's greatest mathematician. The author was inspired to pursue this project at the age of twelve when he learned from his teacher in Missouri that no full biography of Gauss existed at the time. His teacher was Gauss’s great granddaughter, Minna Waldeck Gauss. Long out of print and almost impossible to find on the used book market, this valuable piece of scholarship is being reissued in an augmented form with introductory remarks, an expanded and updated bibliography, and a commentary on Gauss’s mathematical diary, by the eminent British mathematical historian, Jeremy Gray.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the Math/Science History Nerd.......2006-04-18

This book is a very dry and scholarly biography of Gauss. It shows an incredible amount of research on the part of the author and includes pretty much anything you would want to know about Gauss. It also includes a large number of letters that he sent and received which is a very nice touch. Despite most of it being fairly dry it does include some very fun stories. You will defiantly have a "favorite Gauss story" when you finish reading this book.
The author does an exceptional job on his researcher and his book contains a wealth of knowledge. All of the information is portrayed well, but without any type of personal flair. The book is well organized if one where using it for research purposes. However, if you plan to pick this up and read it cover to cover the chronology of his life is sometimes hard to grasp.
Overall this is definitely the best biography there is on one of the most important scientist of the early 19th century. I would recommend it if you are truly interested in the topic. I myself enjoy much more talking about what I learned from this book than actually reading it.

3 out of 5 stars The best book available on the life of Gauss.......2005-11-30

Being an aficianado of the history of mathematics and science I did not hesitate to buy this book; and I would recommend it to anyone who loves stories about mathematicians. But it is much more of a (dry) 'unmathematical' biography than I expected. The author has done an amazing amount of research---the book is teeming with anectdotal stories about people related to Gauss and is filled with references to source material. This is certainly a book I enjoy 'having read' more than I enjoyed reading.

          5 out of 5 stars At last - a reprint !!.......2005-05-29

Thank goodness this excellent book has finally been reprinted. This book has been my primary source for research information on the early life of Gauss, and provides a lot of really useful information on this fascinating genius. I have ordered this book as I myself am writing a book which details how some of Gauss' ideas have influenced modern life.

By the way - MATHSINGER - if you read this; I have taken the liberty of adding you to my Amazon friends list - if you would like to correspond with me about your illustrious progenitor I would be delighted. Any insight into this fascinating individual and giant of science would be most helpful in the preparation of my own book...

5 out of 5 stars Finally Republished !!.......2004-02-14

I am so glad to see this book back in print. I am a great great great granddaughter of Gauss and have been referring people to this book for the last several years, always knowing it was hard to find. It is my primary reference for Gauss, and much of it is very readable. It addresses Gauss' personal life, as well as his mathmatics, and the original edition has short biographies of Gauss' children, and a genealogy.
