Book Description
This book orientates tax practitioners to the public international law aspects of taxation. Equally it provides a framework from which public international lawyers may probe more deeply into the legal challenges posed by the interaction of national taxation with international law. As such, the characterization of the subject as the public international law of taxation is not only foremost in the field, but also a statement of the need for an international consciousness in relation to issues of taxation. Thus far, the analysis from an international law standpoint has been specific; for example, problems of treaty interpretation in relation to double taxation agreements, fiscal jurisdiction, the regulation of international trade and taxation. In this publication, drawing on original and secondary sources, the assimilation accompanied by the commentary provides a comprehensive treatment of the subject in one source. Significantly for the tax practitioner it opens up a window to an international law library.

Was it all bad?.......2003-07-10
This biography presents the life and times of Peter Sellers like a case study of neurosis and unfulfillment. I don't doubt the accuracy of the "tortured soul" treatment the author pursues or the facts of the predicaments Sellers found himself in throughout his life. Failed projects and marriages, poor health and financial woes are on the record. The few instances of joyful periods the author provides though, including examples of sublime artistic creation, are brief and quickly segue into a dismal perspective of their futility. Doesn't seem to me an authentic or rounded depiction of a life, rather a oddly slanted portrayal of a most interesting performer.
Biography is a dangerous game, Cynthia.......2000-04-04
Biographies (and autobiographies) suffer from one over-riding defect - no-one really knows anyone else completely, or even themselves, so to attempt to accurately describe a person's life is fraught with danger. Interviews with friends and relatives will still only give a slanted or emotionally-coloured idea, either for or against. Yet so many biographies confidently claim to be "authorised" or even finite - I wonder at their courage and impudence. However, if reading every biography you can get hold of about someone enables you to find a path somewhere in between all the lines, you might eventually begin to get a glimmer of what makes that person who he is. When that person is Peter Sellers, though, you must remember you shouldn't presume to try and pin down such a complicated genius of a man, and always mentally add "maybe" to all your "facts". This book tries hard and the author thinks he is being scrupulously fair, and it's not a bad effort. Just bear in mind that "authorised" in this case means by the Sellers estate, and that the author is a journalist and film critic.
A Biography Worth Reading (for a change).......2000-04-01
To write about the life of Peter Sellers is such a complex undertaking that only the best writers should attempt it. To try to understand a man who didn't even understand himself is inviting hubris. However, Alexander Walker has been a film critic of a leading London newspaper for many years and should have some idea of what he's taking on, having met Peter Sellers on a number of occasions and apparently been privileged to have been considered a friend (any real friendship is a privilege). It certainly reads well, without all the distasteful "muck-raking" with which other authors have found it necessary to pad their offerings. How accurate any biography (or autobiography for that matter) is, can only be guessed at, but this book appears to be trying honestly to depict and evaluate a man whose genius is only now beginning to be appreciated - rarely in one's own time or country, sadly.
Book Description
David Gere, who came of age as a dance critic at the height of the AIDS epidemic, offers the first book to examine in depth the interplay of AIDS and choreography in the United States, specifically in relation to gay men. The time he writes about is one of extremes. A life-threatening medical syndrome is spreading, its transmission linked to sex. Blame is settling on gay men. What is possible in such a highly charged moment, when art and politics coincide?
Gere expands the definition of choreography to analyze not only theatrical dances but also the protests conceived by ACT-UP and the NAMES Project AIDS quilt. These exist on a continuum in which dance, protest, and wrenching emotional expression have become essentially indistinguishable. Gere offers a portrait of gay male choreographers struggling to cope with AIDS and its meanings.

AIDS, dance, and gay men.......2005-06-25
Reading Professor Gere's book reminds me so much of Eve Sedgwick. Like her minoritizing/universalizing schema, he invents an equation for defining AIDS performances. He then goes on to describe seven aspects of this artistic contributing. Like Professor Sedgwick, he uses huge words and it would benefit the reader to have a dictionary near him or her as they read. Also, the two academics are dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the works of gay artists.
Unfortunately, like Sedgwick, you don't have to read beyond Gere's introductory chapters to get the point. The rest of the book is just lots of description. I highly doubt that professors will assign the whole book, rather than just the first part of it, to students. Only those who want to use the books for specific examples would benefit from reading the whole thing. Additionally, some of the details are gross (drinking shakes made of junk, spilling liquids meant to represents distasteful bodily fluids, etc.) The book covers cutting-edge dancers, and believe me, they succeed at shocking their audiences (or at least this reader).
Professor Gere is not only an academic describing performances after the fact, he was also a journalist who was covering AIDS and the dance community's response to it from the beginning. He must be exciting in the classroom given the multiple hats he wears as academic, journalist, and activist.
AIDS has wreaked havoc upon gay males and many professional dancers. Thus, of course, they would respond to the epidemic in their art. I am glad that a person in the academy has recorded and is responding to this urgent work and action.

Book Description
Designed for an introductory programming course, this market-leading title has been enhanced to include two new tutorials on the next generation of Visual Basic - Visual Basic.Net. Programming with Visual Basic 6.0 Enhanced distinguishes itself from other Windows books because of its unique two-pronged approach. First, this book teaches programming concepts using a task-driven, rather than a command-driven, approach. By working through the tutorials, which are each motivated by a realistic case, individuals learn how to use programming applications that they are likely to encounter in the workplace. Second, the content, organization, and pedagogy of this book exploits the Windows environment. This edition includes creating reports using the print statement, as well as two full chapters on database access using ADO data control, SQL, and the DBGrid control.
Customer Reviews:
needs to be rewritten by Nathan Gurewich and Ori Gurewich.......2007-06-01
I got up to page 200 or so before I realised that I did not learn anything. Then I just went back to using the by Teach Yourself Visual Basic 5 in 21 DaysNathan Gurewich and Ori Gurewich. You can also use the much more wordy Teach Visual Basic 6 in 21 Days by Greg Perry.
This book is really bad, and I seriously doubt that Diane Zak is an expert in VIsual Basic. Perhaps she has a 4 year degree, or something, in education or computer sociology or an allied area of specialty. Have you ever noticed that people who know what they are talking about, they can get to the point very quickly and easily explain the mater. People who have no idea of what is going on usually talk a whole lot without getting to the point. This is just plain yecchy!
Easy to Follow, But..........2007-01-14
Yes the book is fairly easy to follow, but the tutorials ask you to perform tasks that are not possible with the supplied software.
Don't waste your time trying to learn from this book unless it is required for a class!
Besides VB6.0 has reached the end of the support life cycle, and it doesnt run on xp 64bit.
An excellent book for self study.......2006-09-20
I had bought this book for a class but this book is an excellent one for self study also. It basically starts assuming you know nothing about programming or even computer. After a few chapters you end up writing very good programs for Windows. If you want to learn Visual Basic 6 to program for Windows, this is your book.
BUYER BEWARE!!!.......2006-07-07
This is a course text book and does not come with the solution files to the exams found at the end of each lesson. After speaking with a rep from Thompson Learning - the book's publisher - I was advised that the solution files were part of the instructor package, and was not available to individuals. In other words, if you are not a certified instructor, or part of an instructor led course that features this book, you will not be able to measure your progress from the exams in the book.
I found speaking to the reps of Thompson Learning to be a particularly frustrating experience as I was treated rudely by both reps I spoke to. They offered absolutely no help whatsoever.
The book, in itself, is very well written and easy to follow. However, if you are not part of an instructor led course that features this book with access to the solution files, you may want to invest your money elsewhere.
As for this buyer, Thompson Learning is a definite two thumbs down.
Good for beginner.......2006-03-20
If you dont't have any idea about Visual Basic, this's very good book. You can learn easily.

Written for the Specialist.......2003-11-12
Fifteen chapters by diverse authors cover archeology, poetry, histories of tribal, colonial and independent eras and modern economy, industry and environment. Written for the specialist more than the general reader, this is nonetheless a valuable contribution to the resources available on the nation founded in 1971 by the confederation of seven emir-ates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ra's al-Khaimah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain and Fu-jairah. Customer Reviews:
Couldn't get too far into it........2005-11-03
There is a certain simplicity in writing that some people pass up in favor of a more literary/textbook style. That's what I found when I opened this book. While I'm sure there are many beautiful ideas within I could not bring myself to get past the first 20 pages.
Highly Recommended.......2003-07-10
This is an incredibly insightful contribution to our understanding of why Western institutions have become so destuctive of the world around us while generally failing to provide people with a sense of meaning, direction, or pleasure in life. As Loy so clearly articulates, Buddhism offers a perspective that can transform our lives and, perhaps, our self-destructive culture.
Bringing Buddhism Back Home.......2002-02-22
For Westerners who've had a taste of Buddhist practice or insights, there comes a moment when we must look back on our own cultural heritage and wonder, "What the hell happened?" Why this long 2,500 year detour into dominating nature and building social empires? Why this absorbtion into disconnected individualism? Loy's book is exciting trailblazing into the emerging field of putting Buddhist concepts to work to decode history. Highly recommended. Gassho.

Oh, to be young and eligible to enroll in Professor George Hudler's "Plant Pathology 101" class at Cornell! For those of us who aren't, this book is the next best thing--a hugely entertaining introduction to spore lore. Not only does he bring us up to speed on the fungus science, he relates the amazing impact of his branch of science on human history. The Eleusinian Mysteries that so inspired Plato and Sophocles were probably caused by ergot, which Tim Leary and the CIA put to scarier use in its refined form, LSD. Other fungal products are more upbeat: penicillin (Hudler tells a good story about British scientists who put its spores on their clothes in 1940, to preserve their research in case Germany invaded), cyclosporins, which permit such organ recipients as David Crosby not to reject their healthy new livers, and Beano, a derivative of alpha-d-galactosidase that suppresses flatulence in humans. Want to commit the perfect murder? Try aflatoxin, as a Graham Greene character does in The Human Factor. Do you dare to recreate the hallucinations of the Salem witches? Ergot's just the thing, as characters discover to their misfortune in Robin Cook's thriller Acceptable Risk. Hudler packs plenty of intriguing stories into a brief, readable book: exploding artillery fungus, spores spread by earthquakes that can cause anorexia, a 35-acre spread of 1,500-year-old identical mushrooms in Michigan that may be the oldest, biggest living thing on Earth. No question about it--Dr. Hudler is one fun guy. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Mushrooms magically spew forth from the earth in the hours that follow a summer rain. Fuzzy brown molds mischievously turn forgotten peaches to slime in the kitchen fruit bowl. And in thousands of other ways, members of the kingdom Fungi do their part to make life on Earth the miracle that it is. In this lively book, George Hudler leads us on a tour of an often-overlooked group of organisms, which differ radically from both animals and plants. Along the way the author stops to ponder the marvels of nature and the impact of mere microbes on the evolution of civilization. Nature's ultimate recyclers not only save us from drowning in a sea of organic waste, but also provide us with food, drink, and a wide array of valuable medicines and industrial chemicals.
Some fungi make deadly poisons and psychedelic drugs that have interesting histories in and of themselves, and Hudler weaves tales of those into his scientific account of the nature of the fungi. The role of fungi in the Irish potato famine, in the Salem Witch Trials, in the philosophical writings of Greek scholars, and in the creation of ginger snaps are just a few of the many great moments in history to grace these pages.
Hudler moves so easily from discussing human history to exploring scientific knowledge, all with a sense of humor and enthusiasm, that one can well understand why he is an award-winning teacher both at Cornell University as well as nationally. Few, for instance, who read his invitation to "get out of your chair and take a short walk" will ever again look without curiosity and admiration at the "rotten" part of the world around them. Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds is full of information that will satisfy history buffs, science enthusiasts, and anyone interested in nature's miracles. Everyone in Hudler's audience will develop a new appreciation of the debt they owe to the molds for such common products as penicillin, wine, and bread.
Customer Reviews:
The best book in Mycology 101.......2007-05-17
I am fortunate enough to have actually been in the class "Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds," taught by Professor Hudler at Cornell, and I just have to say that this is book served as the ideal introduction to the world of fungus. I am purely a business major, and always hated scientific, biology type of stuff, but this book is just unbelievable in the way that it teachs you about one of the most complex and obscure organisms in the world. The book is informative, hilarious, interesting and incredibly easy to read. It teaches you EVERYTHING you need to know at an introductory level of Fungus, and its just plain awesome.
Professor Hudler is a fantastic professor, and this book will teach you almost all the important topics of his class at Cornell. I cannot emphasize enough as to how much I enjoyed reading this book, front to back, and how much I have learned.
This book is great!.......2006-03-10
This book is easy to read, humor keeps it upbeat and interesting.
There's Fungus Among Us!.......2006-01-12
This book is a great beginning reader about Fungi. It covers mushrooms, molds, and yeasts and gives an overview of what is a fungus, fungus biology, and fungus reproduction. Then he starts telling fascinating stories about fungus that illuminate their nature: the story of penicillin, how yeasts are used to make beer and wine and bread, how ergot (a fungus that grows on rye) probably resulted in periodic "witch" episodes in Europe and then in America, psychedelic mushrooms, fungus compounds, and on and on. I should add even if you think you know the penicillin story, he gives many fascinating details that you may not be familiar with.
This book fascinated me and was engrossing. It is written in a way that is very accessible and geared to the novice. I think anyone with a rudimentary interest in biology or science will like it.
You'll feel like a kid again reading this..........2006-01-05
I was inspired to pick up this book when I first heard about slime molds; although it only just touches on the topic of slime molds, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!
True to it's name, this book really takes you into the bizarre world of mycology, integrating historical, religious, counterculture, and scientific themes into one well-woven tapestry. This book will make you want to become a mycologist; I felt like I was a kid again, discovering an entirely new and exciting world. I very much recommend this book-- it will renew your sense of wonder in the world, and lead you to poke at old leftovers with a sick sense of delight!
solid introduction to mycology.......2004-12-19
The fungi are enormously important organisms in nearly every ecosystem, but their importance is rarely fully appreciated. Besides that, they are a fascinating life form, as mind bending as any creature from science fiction.
This book is a very brief introduction to fungi. The topic itself is fascinating, so it is no problem that the writing is only a tad better than typical academic writing.
Hudler covers:
* the structure of fungi and their classification
* their life-cycles and reproduction, spore travel including exploding cups
* the Armillaria bulbosa, the world's largest living organism and one of its oldest
* the fungus that caused the Irish potato famine
* the possibility that Joseph's famine in Exodus was caused by rust
* the origin of ginger snaps
* Dutch Elm disease and other tree diseases
* Ergot, which probably caused the hallucinations of the Salem witch trials, and maybe the experience of the Eleusinian mysteries in ancient Greece, and from which we make LSD
* fungus and problems of food storage
* athlete's foot, ringworm, yeast infections and thrush
* penicillin (the details of its discovery and the growing resistance of microbes), shiitake and other mushrooms from Asian medicine; and of course Beano
* yeasts in baking and brewing
* brief look at edible mushrooms and poisonous ones
* magic mushrooms
* wood decay
* symbiosis with insects (leaf-cutter ants, termites and ambrosia beetles); and fungi that prey on insects, including houseflies and the gypsy moth
* symbiosis with plants, especially mychorrhizae
* lichens, which are generally symbiosis between fungi and algae (plants), but in some cases the fungi are evidently parasites (and this was interesting news to me!); the possibility that the Biblical manna from heaven was a lichen; and lichens that store and concentrate radioactive caesium, which are eaten by reindeer, which are eaten by humans, leading to radiation poisoning; and lichens as sources for oils, dyes and perfumes
Other reviewers are obviously raving about this book, but it has much too little detail for my taste. It's target audience is everyone, so the author backed away from scientific information which would have made the book much, much more fascinating. However, as an introduction to fungi for people with little or no scientific background, this book is perfect.
