Customer Reviews:
A slick little book for the X Files completists out there.......2003-09-22
The X Files Fight the Future Scrapbook is an item for those fans out there who just have to have anything and everything related to The X Files. It features a very basic summary of The X Files: Fight the Future motion picture which can be read in just a few minutes by young and old alike. The only things it really has going for it are its overall slick look and style, its collection of many impressive color photographs from the movie itself, and its relatively low price. There is nothing here that is not taken directly from the movie, so only the most loyal and obsessed X Files fans really have any reason to go out of their way to add this scrapbook to their coveted X Files collections. It's an impressive little scrapbook, but its importance is negligible at best.
Nice Pictures!!!.......1999-06-16
I bought the book and I gave it the 3 stars because every page has photos from the movie and for its budget price. The story is narrated so that a young child can read it too. More a collectors piece than for a good read!
at least you're not paying alot for what is basically nothin.......1999-04-23
this is basically a picturebook with scenes from the movie - you won't see any pictures you didn't see in the movie. a short paragraph is included for each page, which reads like a book you would read to a 4 yr old at bedtime. the 2 stars are for 1) the photos, and 2) the low price
Excellent!.......1998-12-04
I ordered this when I saw it, and I think it's a really great book. Really great pictures, I have two copies. It's also a really good price. I love it, Fight the Future is the best.
Perfect novel companion.......1998-07-17
This book is the perfect companion to the feature film novel. It is short, but filled with beautiful pictures. If you loved the movie and novel, you'll love this book, too!
Book Description
Signs of War and Peace focuses on the role of public display in the conflict in Northern Ireland. Jack Santino explores the nature of public display, its relationships to class-based aesthetics, tradition, and popular style. He also looks at contest, conflict, and civil war, and the ways the former are intimately intertwined with the latter, both in Northern Ireland and elsewhere. The work is interdisciplinary, combining ethnographic, anthropological, folkloristic, and performance study approaches.
Customer Reviews:
Good analysis of a complex situation.......2006-01-13
This book is an analysis of the ways in which the various factions in the conflict in Northern Ireland express their views in public ways-- murals, parades, and other kids of displays. Santino does a nice job of covering complex ground. Some symbols are used in different ways by the same groups, while other symbols are unique to a particular side. Placement, content, color, are all examined to show how they convey complex messages. This book is readable, and manages to maintain some objectivity in an otherwise extremely polarized cultural context. I would recommend it to anyone interested in this part of the world.

Great part two.......2003-10-26
Cliche though it may be, Crusade of Ashes really does start with a bang and doesn't let up, all the way to its end. Like the corebook, Orpheus manages to cover all the bases, giving so many opportunites for story hooks that you actually feel more liberated than constrained by the recommended storyline.
This is very much like an Orpheus Players' Guide with Merits/Flaws, rules on Artifact creation and help on how to play an Orpheus operative on the run, except that it also provides new Antagonists, Allies, and story development. The new Spectre types presented, especially the "Friendly Angels" are spectacularly chilling.
The only problem I had with it is that it stopped too soon, much like only getting to see the first half-hour of a truly great movie. I can't wait to see where Orpheus leads.

Customer Reviews:
Must Have.......2004-07-23
For anyone who desires to master Microsoft Office 2003, this book should suffice. It isn't a how-to book in the traditional sense as in "how to write a document in Word", but delves deeper in the the technical aspects of the suite into the "why" aspect of it. The book discusses security which is certainly important and how Outlook is used with Exchange Server which is definately helpful. Therefore, this book would not be of any use to those seeking to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist exams. This book is for administrators and not users which the exams are for. However, if you feel you've learned all that there is to learn about Microsoft Office 2003 and seek more knowledge, this book should not disappoint.

Book Description
This perennially popular book, now revised and expanded with additional historical photos and documents, offers a concise introduction to Wisconsin's Norwegian immigrants. The narrative examines the mass migration of Norwegians from 1837, when Ole Nattestad became the first Norwegian settler in Wisconsin, to the late nineteenth century, when Norwegian immigration largely came to a close. This volume demonstrates the efforts of immigrants to balance newfound American customs with the most treasured traditions of their homeland.
New to this edition are selected letters of Ole Munch Ræder, a scholar sent by the Norwegian government in 1847 to study the American legal system. Ræder visited several Wisconsin cities and villiages and paid special attention to the Norwegian community. His compelling accounts, which appeared in newspapers in Norway, offer a contemporary view of Norwegian life in Wisconsin.

Celebrate the Christmas season with twenty true stories from a simpler time, forty years ago, when happiness was baking cookies, decorating the Christmas tree, or even just getting out of wearing snow boots to school.
Customer Reviews:
Fun remembering along with her!.......2007-08-21
I bought this book to gain information and recipes for lefse, but ended up with a wonderful book with stories and memories that I could laugh, cry and remember with. Though I was a "city kid", I spent a lot of time on my uncle's farm, and grew up with my dad's stories of growing up on a farm, so I could relate to Leann's stories. It was very fun to reminisce along with her. By the way, the lefse turned out fabulous!! It's now the only recipe I use.
A Delightful Trip into the Past.......2007-08-21
This book was truly delightful. I am a Canadian and was raised in a small rural town. Leann's stories reminded me so much of my own childhood in spite of the obvious differences, I really couldn't put the book down! Well done! I will certainly look forward to reading some more of her writings.
sweet tales from home and recipes too.......2007-05-01
This book is delightful! The stories are heartwarming, and ring true. I like how she describes her home life, and there are good authentic recipes in there too. A wonderful, gentle book for anyone you know!
A heartwarming book about a vanishing way of life. . ........2004-10-07
Christmas in Dairyland is a collection of short, true stories about a little girl growing up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin in the early 1960s. The book tells of life for a young girl and her family-her father, who did the farming; her mother who, despite being disabled by polio, took care of the house and cooking; and a much older brother and sister, both of whom worked and contributed their incomes to the family.
The stories recall preparations for Christmas at home, school, and church, how LeAnn learned about her Norwegian heritage and, most important, the love that pervaded this close-knit mid-20th century American family. As a bonus, Christmas in Dairyland includes tried and true recipes for many of the Norwegian heritage foods featured in the stories, including lefse (wafer-thin potato bread), Julekake (a rich Christmas bread), fattigman (a deep-fried sweet cookie), and a variety of traditional Christmas cookies. For the more adventurous, there is a recipe for lutefisk (cod that has been preserved in lye). Finally, the book includes instructions for making colorful candles using old crayons, paraffin, ice cubes, and milk cartons.
About the Book
This is a heartwarming book about a vanishing way of life. Small dairy farms, with around 30 milking cows, were plentiful when the author was growing up and they provided a warm and loving home for hundreds of thousands of families back then. There are few left today, as small farms have been abandoned, sold for development, or gobbled up by industrial-scale farming operations. Small dairy farms can no longer provide for a family's financial needs. Even then it was a real struggle. But, though such families were often well below the poverty level in strictly financial terms, they were usually wealthy in love and family relationships, as these stories show.
One or more members of the family-the wife, a son, or daughter-usually had an outside job that contributed to the family income. And the farm usually provided sustenance-milk, beef, pork, chicken, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and other produce, while mothers and daughters sewed and knitted to supplement clothing needs.. Most important, farm life developed close-knit, loving families that were strong on self-reliance, responsibility, and respect for hard work. My own wife grew up on such a farm and I have often heard her stories about the joys and difficulties-mostly joys-of growing up that way.
LeAnn R. Ralph's stories tell of the excitement of making ornaments and decorating the Christmas tree in her school room each year (another bygone era) and at home. The annual expedition with her father to select the "just right" tree from the stand of red pine on their farm was one of many experiences that built a strong bond between father and daughter. Then there was the year that she and her older sister climbed a large pine to cut off the very top for their tree because all the other pines had grown so much.
LeAnn learned to make lefse from her mother and tells of the mouth-watering aroma of the freshly made, thin Norwegian bread as she came home from school. "By itself, lefse didn't really taste like much, but once it was spread with butter, sprinkled with sugar and rolled into a log, I would have happily eaten nothing but lefse for breakfast, dinner and supper." It made my mouth water just to read about it and I was happy to find LeAnn's recipe for lefse (and other goodies) at the end of the book.
This is a good book for all ages, from pre-teens through octogenarian. The writing is clear, simple, and direct, easily read by young children, but not so simple as to put off adult readers. Children will connect with
LeAnn's description of a young girl's life on the farm, helping Dad with the chores, helping Mom wrap Christmas presents, yearning for a toboggan, and being surprised by her brother's purchase of a saddle for her pony, Dusty. They'll understand her attempts to get out of wearing boots, heavy coats, and mittens on warm winter days, "just because it might get cold." And some will relate to LeAnn's stark fear of having to stand up in front of all the people at church to sing a solo-memorized in Norwegian-of an old-country Christmas carol. Older folks will feast on the nostalgia, and may get tears in their eyes as they learn how that Norwegian carol affected one old woman in the congregation. People from all generations will enjoy the depiction of a close, loving family as it prepares for and enjoys Christmas in Dairyland.

A heartwarming anthology of true anecdotes of rural life.......2004-04-03
Christmas In Dairyland: True Stories From A Wisconsin Farm by LeAnn R. Ralph is a heartwarming anthology of true anecdotes of rural life on a Wisconsin dairy farm. Even though Wisconsin is still known as America's Dairyland, life on a family homestead is fast being replaced by corporate agribusiness, and the memories treasured in Christmas In Dairyland are quickly becoming unique milestones of an era needing to be preserved in thought and print for the sake of future generations. Christmas In Dairyland is simply wonderful reading and is a "must" for all Wisconsin public library collections.

Book Description
An exploration of medical discoveries-from the ancient Greeks to the present
"Always help, or at least do no harm." Following this simple yet revolutionary idea, Hippocrates laid the foundation for modern medicine over two millennia ago. From the Hippocratic Oath to the human genome, from Pasteur's germ theory to the worldwide eradication of smallpox, Medical Firsts brings to life 2,500 years of medical advances and discoveries. Organized chronologically, the book describes each milestone in a vivid capsule history, making it a fascinating and wonderfully readable resource for anyone interested in medicine's past progress and future promise.
Robert E. Adler, PhD (Santa Rosa, CA) has worked as a psychologist and science journalist. He writes about a wide variety of scientific and medical topics for New Scientist, Nature, and other publications and is the author of Science Firsts (0-471-40174-9).
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Book.......2006-11-10
The title explains it all. It's basically a history book of medicine written in a very modern, thought provoking way. I read it as part of a class, but it was very interesting. It's amazing to see how much knowledge the ancient peoples knew about medicine and how far we've come since then. It's funny how many medical advacements have had to be rediscovered because people's discoveries aren't accepted by society.
A physician from San Francisco Bay writes:.......2004-08-15
I highly recommend this book, especially to those who practice or plan to practice in the field of medicine. Even for non-physicians, I think reading Dr. Adler's "Medical Firsts" will be a very enriching and worthwhile experience. The author has created an educational yet highly entertaining work in which he has chosen to write about specific physician/scientists throughout history who he feels were the most visionary and heroic in their contributions to the advancement of Western Medicine. In reading the book, I feel as if I have been taken on a unique journey through medical hisotry, which at times appears like a complex maze. Along the way, the author describes some tragic blind alleys where several of these physician/scientists who had come forth with potentially life saving discoveries were shunned and considered to be heretics because they dared to challenge the status quo with their scientific apoproach to medical research and practice.
In each concise and well-written chapter, the author's respect and admiration for the enlightened scientific method practiced by these venerable physician researchers comes through vividly. I found the author's message very inspiring: if we are able to trust and support an unbiased and scientific approach to the alleviation of suffering and disease, we may someday fulfill the great promise of these astounding medical advances to offer superior quality of life for all of humanity.
A superbly fantastic journey through knowledge and history.......2004-08-09
Medical Firsts: From Hippocrates To The Human Genome by psychologist and science journalist Robert E. Adler is the amazing story of the evolution of Western medicine as achieved through the lives and work of more than thirty of its greatest practitioners. Woven in storytelling prose for a grand reader's tour through history, Medical Firsts covers from how the Greek physician Hippocrates grounded the foundation of medicine in science and observation to the breakthrough advances and discoveries of modern medical technology. A superbly fantastic journey through knowledge and history alike.
Don't be afraid!!!.......2004-06-23
As a lay person, I cautiously picked up Medical Firsts thinking I wouldn't understand a word. Surprise, surprise. I not only understood, but was blown away by what I didn't know. Adler made the lives and works of medical pioneers who laid the ground work for what we all take for granted come alive for me. Since I've actively repelled anything remotely connected to science all my life, almost every page had a "wow" factor.
The short chapters made it a lot more readable for me as a science challenged reader. With so much new info, I was grateful to pause after each one to appreciate the enormity of the discovery. I developed a reverence and gratituide to those who overcame enormous social barriers and fought, amazingly, the same hurdles that impede progress today - fear of change, fear of the unknown.
Thanks to Adler, I just might tiptoe back into new bookstore aisles.
Adler's Second Book on Firsts!.......2004-05-19
Medical Firsts is a well written, interesting, and informative account of preeminent medical achievements over the past 2500 years. It is well worth reading whether you are a medical professional or simply have a curious mind. Robert Adler's style of writing is easy to follow, entertaining, and intelligent. This book is organized into twenty-eight bite-sized chapters, each of which is thoroughly researched and very fascinating on its own. After reading Robert Adler's first great book, Science Firsts, I had very high expectations. I was certainly not disappointed and you won't be either. I highly recommend this book.
