2 out of 5 stars A patchwork monstrosity - the comic not the monster.......2007-07-09

Trying to cash in on the monster boom of the sixties and seventies, as well as the success of Warren's black and white horror comic magazines CREEP and EERIE, Marvel Comics launched a wave of monster titles in both comic and magazine form. Mummies, werewolves, zombies, vampires and even Satan's son mingled with Spider-man and the Hulk at the newsstand.

THE MONSTER OF FRANKENSTEIN starts off as a worthwhile endeavor, but because of the frequent rotation of writers, artists and inkers, the comic, like the monster himself, quickly morphs into a slow-moving, lifeless patchwork mess. The persona of the monster rapidly looses focus simply because the writers cannot decide weather he is a sympatric hero or vindictive villain. Devoid of personality and purpose, Frankenstein is relegated as a second rate character in his own book.

Most of the narrative for the comic series is supplied by those who come in contact with the monster, weather it be a Satanic cult, killer robot, or a troupe of circus freaks. Their motivations shape the storylines as an unaware Frankenstein, mute and directionless, is eventually usurped thematically by the flamboyant supporting characters around him.

In the fifties, Dick Briefer created the ultimate Frankenstein comic,The Monster of Frankenstein. Because the Comic Code Authority was not in effect, Briefer was free to portray Frankenstein as a sadistic brute with animal cunning ever vengeful at the world that feared him. He was a force of nature with his own sinister desires, which usually led him into conflict with the police, Russian spies, mad scientists, the military, werewolves, mummies, zombies and ghouls, all with devastating results. It is a pity that the stable of Marvel Comic writers never saw Dick Briefer's comic, they would have learned a great deal from it.

3 out of 5 stars Collection ranges from true classics to true drek........2005-06-28

This mammoth black-and-white reprint volume features some of very best comics plushing by Marvel... and some of the very worst. Basically, the tales within these pages that have Gary Friedrich credited as writer are true gems of comic story-telling, from the fabulous adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel, through the inevitable battle between horror gothic horror titans Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster, through the tragic conclusion of the monster's quest to find the Last Frankenstein, the first 11 issues of the Monster of Frankenstein comic book are indeed "essential" reading. The stories are well-crafted, the 19th century setting refeshing (and particularly fun if you're a lover of Hammer films like me), the characters all interesting, and the illustrations for those tales, primarily by Mike Ploog and John Buscema, are also among some of the finest work those artists ever did.

The same is true of the first few reprints featuring Frankenstein's Monster from the pages of Monsters Unleashed. The saga of Frankenstien's Monster is moved into the modern day as an obsessive mad scientiest discovers the inert creature in a traveling sideshow and revives him with bizarre and tragic consequences. The initial stories were written by Gary Friedrich and illustrated by John Buscema, and these, again, are true comic-book classics.

But once Friedrich leaves as writer, the quality goes down the drain. With the exception of the final story in this collection, the episodes penned by Doug Moench are just plain awful, with Frankenstien's Monster facing off against a silly secret criminal organization and even sillier by-products of the efforts of modern-day monster-builders. I hate to say that Moench turned in bad work for the series, as he has written some of my favorite comics(Master of Kung-Fu, Six From Sirius, his run on Catwoman), but there is just nothing redeeming about his efforts on the Frankenstien series. (Except the very last story from Legion of Monsters. Moench and the artist he was teamed with on the strip, Val Mayerick, do their only decent work on that one.

All in all, about 1/3rd of this book is trash, but the good parts are really good, and I say it is a worthy addition to any fan of horror comics' bookshelf. Just skip the material that originally appeared in The Frankenstein Monster issues 12-18 and Monsters Unleashed issues 6-9.

    4 out of 5 stars Sadly short-lived series........2005-02-15

Having missed the 70s Horror Comics Boom, I was happy to see that Marvel Comics would be releasing Essential collections featuring tales of two of the most famous monsters in every possible medium: Count Dracula and the Frankenstein Monster.

The Monster of Frankenstein series deserves far more recognition and praise than it usually gets, despite the fact that it did not last as long as the more-renowned Tomb of Dracula series. In many ways, the first four issues are more faithful to Mary Shelley's story than any of the films produced, including Boris Karloff's and Peter Cushing's widely-accepted classic portrayals of creature and creator, respectively.

The Monster is played as the multi-layered and tragic character he was always intended to be. Intelligent, wise, articulate, and lonely, he seeks to discover his place in a world that has rejected him since his birth.

The subsequent stories written by Gary Friedrich (known also for his writing chores on Marvel's The Incredible Hulk, a character who owes his creation in part to the Frankenstein Monster) are the real meat of this collection. The Monster is given a genuine pathos, and manages to maintain it even after he is rendered mute. Doug Moench, by contrast, turns the Monster into more of a lumbering simpleton, as if loss of voice equates to loss of intelligence. Bill Mantlo, who wrote the final issue before the series' all-too premature cancellation, gives a most bizarre portrayal of the Monster. Mantlo, also of Incredible Hulk fame (among many other comic books), introduces a Monster who talks and acts an awful lot like..... the Hulk. On the other hand, Mantlo also introduced some very interesting supporting characters, and it's a real shame that he wasn't given the opportunity to explore and develop them further.

Also featuring memorable battles with Dracula (something actually seen on the screen only once, in one of the most infamously "bad" movies of all time no less), and Werewolf By Night (another staple of Marvel Horror who must be given the Essentials treatment), The Essential Monster of Frankenstein is a treat for fans of horror, comic books, and Mary Shelley's immortal novel. It's alive!

4 out of 5 stars Marvel's turn to tell tales of the Frankenstein monster.......2005-02-06

Once upon a time there was a comic books company named E.C. that published a whole line of comics, including "Tales from the Crypt," "The Vault of Horror," and "The Haunt of Fear." Then Dr. Frederick Wertham, a medical doctor and psychiatrist published his infamous "Seduction of the Innocent" in 1954, which claimed comic books contributed to making children delinquents (and worse). Even Superman was attacked for "arousing fantasies of sadistic joy in seeing others punished while you yourself remain immune." The industry was forced to adopt the Standards of the Comics Code Authority for editorial matter (the "Good Housekeeping" seal of approval on the cover.

General Standards Part B of the Code originally adopted reads as follows: "(1) No comic magazine shall use the word "horror" or "terror" in its title. (2) All scenes of horror, excessive bloodshed, gory or gruesome crimes, depravity, lust, sadism, masochism shall not be permitted. (3) All lurid, unsavory, gruesome illustrations shall be eliminated. (4) Inclusion of stories dealing with evil shall be used or shall be published only where the intent is to illustrate a moral issue and in no case shall evil be presented alluringly nor so as to injure the sensibilities of the reader. (5) Scenes dealing with, or instruments associated with walking dead, torture vampires and vampirism, ghouls, cannibalism, and werewolfism are prohibited."

So it was that for many years the only place future delinquents could read comic book horror stories were in such black & white magazines published by Warren as "Creepy" and "Eerie." However, in 1971 the Comics Code Authority relaxed its strictures on the horror genre and the following year Marvel comics released "Werewolf by Night," "Ghost Rider," "Man-Thing," and "Tomb of Dracula." Once you get to the King of Vampires can the Frankenstein monster be far behind?

"The Monster of Frankenstein" was not on the same level as "Tomb of Dracula," which is one of the great horror comics of all time, but it does have its moment. Originally written by Gary Friedrich and drawn by Mike Ploog (who made his artistic reputation on "Werewolf by Night" and "Ghost Rider"), the comic book took a different approach from "Tomb of Dracula." Whereas Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan were dealing with the historical and literary figure of Dracula in contemporary times (with a supporting cast that included descendants of the characters in Bram Stoker's gothic novel), Friedrich and Ploog began by adopting Mary Shelley's novel in the first four issues.

The adaptation is the best part of "The Monster of Frankenstein, Volume 1" collection, very close to Mary Shelley's novel, especially in comparison to any of the Universal or Hammer movies you have ever seen. However, once you get past those first four issues the stories do seem a lot like those Hammer movies (e.g., #6 "--In Search of the Last Frankenstein"). The big difference is that this Frankenstein monster (remember, the Frankenstein of Shelley's title is the doctor as "the Modern Prometheus" and not his creation) talks and he talks a lot. Granted, this is faithful to Shelley's conception, but the more the monster talks the stranger it gets (and the word balloons for the creature's thought are really weird to me).

The monster does have an encounter with Dracula way back when (#7-9), drawn by John Buscema, and then we get back to the Last Frankenstein bit (#10-11). But at that point the comic book undergoes a radical change. Doug Moench becomes the writer, with Val Mayerik the primary artist with a revolving door policy on the inkers (I like Vinnie Colletta and Mayerik inking his own work the best with Jack Abel at the other end of the spectrum). More importantly, the monster falls into a glacier, gets frozen in ice, and (presto) the monster now walks among us in the present day.

At this point I really lost interest in the comic book. There was an effort to lessen the monster's vocabulary but the abrupt shift to the present really set the character adrift. When Bill Mantlo took over the scripting chores things did improve (e.g., #18 "The Lady of the House") and what we get in the issues of "Monsters Unleashed!" are the best of these stories, written by Moench, but more in keeping with what Mantlo put together (having a supporting cast of recurring characters was helpful). Ironically, to bring things full circle we are back to black & white magazines and not four-color comic books.

Ultimately, "The Monster of Frankenstein, Volume 1" is of more interest to those familiar with the Frankenstein myth more than to fans of horror comic books. This is primarily because of the extension of Mary Shelley's original vision of the monster created by Frankenstein. All of the Frankenstein movies have been primarily concerned with telling the original story in a slightly different way. Making the creature a leading character turns out to be extremely problematic, but that only makes the attempt more interesting. With "Monster of Frankenstein" #1-5, "Frankenstein Monster" #6-18, "Giant-Size Werewolf" #2, "Monsters Unleashed" #2 & #4-10, and "Legion of Monsters" 31 (with the Neal Adams cover), this is pretty much the complete Marvel Frankenstein.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of 70's horror comics.......2005-01-03

The 70's horror craze in comics didn't last long, but if you were a kid then, it was great. Gary Frederick and Mike Ploog did an excellent job of adapting Mary Shelley's novel and providing a sequel to launch an ongoing series. Unfortunately, the series suffered from a lack of supporting characters and was never as successful as others like Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf by Night. Still, this book contains the entire series, as well as the b&w magazine stories the were published simultaneously.

            Book Description

The Mono Project is the much talked-about open source initiative to create a Unix implementation of Microsoft's .NET Development Framework. Its purpose is to allow Unix developers to build and deploy cross-platform .NET applications. The project has also sparked interest in developing components, libraries and frameworks with C#, the programming language of .NET. The controversy? Some say Mono will become the preferred platform for Linux development, empowering Linux/Unix developers. Others say it will allow Microsoft to embrace, extend, and extinguish Linux. The controversy rages on, but--like many developers--maybe you've had enough talk and want to see what Mono is really all about. There's one way to find out: roll up your sleeves, get to work, and see what you Mono can do. How do you start? You can research Mono at length. You can play around with it, hoping to figure things out for yourself. Or, you can get straight to work with Mono: A Developer's Notebook--a hands-on guide and your trusty lab partner as you explore Mono 1.0. Light on theory and long on practical application, Mono: A Developer's Notebook bypasses the talk and theory, and jumps right into Mono 1.0. Diving quickly into a rapid tour of Mono, you'll work through nearly fifty mini-projects that will introduce you to the most important and compelling aspects of the 1.0 release. Using the task-oriented format of this new series, you'll learn how to acquire, install, and run Mono on Linux, Windows, or Mac OS X. You'll work with the various Mono components: Gtk#, the Common Language Runtime, the class libraries (both .NET and Mono-provided class libraries), IKVM and the Mono C# compiler. No other resource will take you so deeply into Mono so quickly or show you as effectively what Mono is capable of. The new Developer's Notebooks series from O'Reilly covers important new tools for software developers. Emphasizing example over explanation and practice over theory, they focus on learning by doing--you'll get the goods straight from the masters, in an informal and code-intensive style that suits developers. If you've been curious about Mono, but haven't known where to start, this no-fluff, lab-style guide is the solution.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Mono development for experienced programmers. .......2006-03-23

Mono: A Developer's Notebook is an addition to O'Reilly's Developer's Notebook series, aimed at helping experienced programmers come quickly up speed on a new technologies and platforms. These books are heavy on code and examples, and light on theory. This book lives up to this mission well.

From the opening pages of the book, we learn that "Mono is an open source cross-platform, implementation of the .NET development framework." If you're an experienced programmer looking to take a dip into the .NET world, but not so eager to enter the Microsoft end of the pool, you're probably in for a treat with Mono: A Developer's Notebook.

This book gets going very quickly. The first chapter takes you through getting Mono up and running on your machine, with instructions provided for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. Although as Mono is such a moving target, much of what's there is likely already outdated. Even shortly after the book was released, I found discrepancies and differences in the process of getting Mono up and running on my own machine while following the book. Your mileage may vary. If you're the sharp arrow this book targets, that probably wont stand in your way. This chapter is followed by a whirlwind introduction to C#, aimed squarely at folks who already have a language or two under their belt.

The rest of the book provides examples of using Mono to accomplish common tasks such as working with files, strings, and regular expressions, GUI programming with GTK#, processing XML, and network programming. Each chapter has a number of "labs", in which a given task is explored, and sample code is provided to illustrate common ways to handle each task. The book is rather fast paced, and assumes a lot of its reader. Each chapter provides pointers to further resources about the given topic if you find yourself wanting to know more.

All in all, if you're the type who can skim over the basics and take it from there, then this book is likely to please. It gives you just enough information to get you on your way, but doesn't belabor the point with endless details. If, on the other hand, you enjoy probing through obscure corners of language references and exploring the nuances of syntax and expression, then this book is likely to leave you somewhat hungry.

The book is well written and easy to follow for an experienced programmer. Example code is plentiful, and clearly written. The code certainly takes center stage in the book. I did, however, notice a lot of typos and 'bugs' in the text. Perhaps that enhances the feel of a "developer's notebook", but even still the book could stand to have a little better proof-reading. One final nit-pick. Each page in the book is made to look like the page of a lab notebook, complete with a grid as the page background. A nice design touch, but a little hard on the eyes to comfortably read.

Bottom line, if you're an experienced developer looking to quickly come up to speed on C# and .NET development in the Mono environment, then this book will likely be a valuable investment.

I have a small C# base and still get confused about certain things but this has really helped speed up with the basics. I have found that there are a lot of choices when we pick a language and the key to any good program is cross compatible and multiple language use.
This is extremely lightweight (you don't need a DVD worth of setup) I was happy to read this book and to get to the code samples that are always at the website.
This was another well thought out developer guide that O'Reilly is famous for.

            I rate this 4 stars

5 out of 5 stars Very fast reading (which is good).......2004-09-29

All I wanted was to know how (difficult) would a .NET to Mono migration be. So - from a perspective of someone who has used .NET for a while and is curious about Mono - this book is a great read: concise, well written and sufficient. Not crusted with boring details - thank God! So, this certainly is not the only book on C# and Mono a newby needs.. It shouldn't be. To summarise - this book is a fast read and .NET-to-Mono migration much smoother than expected.

4 out of 5 stars Coverage of C# specific to Mono.......2004-09-26

Turns out there is more to making C# cross platform than I thought. Turns out the majority of the core of .NET is cross-platform when you use Mono, but the UI portion is not. So the book mainly concentrates on the use of GTK#, spending about 80 out of 250 pages on it. Other sections include XML processing, networking, core .NET, and installation.

The well written, concise, and focused. This is a strength, and a weakness. The book may be too focused by design. Which leaves you in a situation where you don't have enough book to be valuable on it's own. You will still need O'Reilly's Programming C# book to start learning C#.

I recommend this book to anyone looking to start with GTK#, or who is interested in porting their C# code off the Windows platform. I do not recommend this book for someone just starting out with C#.

Rashidi and Van Sertima are shaping the world of future scholarship with this book. To realize that the Sumerians, Elamites, Dravidians, Harrapans, and the Sabaeans were all black, adds more honor to the "misplaced" History of the African people. This affects those rascist who try and make the beggining dates of Egypt, closer to those of the Tigres, and the Euphrates. Still even by doing so, the beggining of each were "Christmas Coal Black". This book provides much evidence of this fact! Also interesting, and something most unknown, is the images of Buddah, and Krishna, at first had African features. For those who haven't read Kersey Graves "16 Crucified Saviors" the myths of Buddah, Krishna, Christ, as well many others is almost exactly the same. What is even more interesting is Buddah , Krishna, and Christ, all have a 600 year split between their virgin births, and all there first graven images had African features, before they were tampered with. In the end this is a book that should be read by all, scholars, and common people a like, because it helps you to understand, and appreciate the role of the African people throughout history. This book has intense evidence, regardless if you choose to accept it or not.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING IT PROVIDES INFORMATION THAT IS BOTH TRUE AND OF EXTREME VALUE. THE AFRICAN PRESENCE IN EARLY ASIA COVERS MIGRATION FROM AFRICA TO ASIA DATING BACK FROM OVER 100,000 YEARS AGO. IT ALSO COVERS THE REVOLT OF THE ZANJ, WERE EAST AFRICAN SLAVES REVOLTED IN IRAQ AND IRAN. CAUSING NUMEROUS DEFEATS UPON THEIR OPPRESSORS AND SERIOUS ECONOMIC DAMAGE TO THE EMPIRE OF THEIR OPPESSORS. IT ALSO COVERS NUMEROUS AMOUNTS OF AFRICAN PERSONALITIES AND PEOPLE IN ASIA. SUCH AS UTHMAN IBN BAHR AL-JAHIZ, MALIK AMBAR, LOKMAN, BILAL, ANTARA: THE LION AND MANY OTHERS. THE AFRICAN DIASPORA IN ASIA WAS MAINLY BY MIGRATION, BUT SLAVERY WAS ALSO AN EXAMPLE OF THESE MASSIVE AFRICAN POPULATIONS THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN ARABIA, YEMEN, SOUTHERN IRAQ, KUWATI, SOUTHERN IRAN, AND SOME PARTS OF INDIA. HISTORICAL MIGRATIONS INCLUDED SAUDI ARABIA AND YEMEN ALSO. AS WELL AS INDIA HAS AN EXTREMLY LARGE AFRICOID POPULATION KNOWN AS THE "THE BLACK UNTOUCHABLES OF INDIA" WHO ARE THE INDIGENOUS INHABITERS OF INDIA AND THE CREATORS OF THE INDUS RIVER VALLEY CIVILIZATION. Book Description

Emphasizing writing as a means to examining, evaluating, sharing, and refining ideas, A Short Guide to Writing about Chemistry will help chemists develop the language skills the field demands. This book covers the kinds of readings and writing that chemists are called on to do-from introductory to more advanced work-in academic and industrial settings, and in public life. With comprehensive coverage on topics including graphing programs, ACS formats, Science Citation Index, Merck Index, and writing abstracts, this book is a "must-have" for any aspiring chemist. This edition also provides updated coverage on the Internet, working with computers, and electronic sources. For anyone interested in a practical and rewarding guide to communicating successfully about chemistry.

3 out of 5 stars How to read and write chemistry (for the university student).......2002-10-14

This book is meant to be a practical guide in reading and writing chemistry. There are numerous practical tidbits interspersed throughout the book. There are also exercises (many of which include "peer review" style discussion among classmates) and numerous examples (both positive and negative). The topics range from reading the primary literature through writing lab reports and even to giving oral seminars.

The authors do a good job straddling the line between keeping the text short (this is a "Short Guide" after all), while providing the essential kernals of information. Unfortunately, it reads a bit like a how-to guide for someone trying to get an "A" grade in their "Writing in Chemsitry" course. There is little discussion of format variations (except possibly in the "Writing a Research Proposal" section) probably not the author's fault, more of a page constraint issue. However, I would like to have seen less on, say "How to keep a freshman lab book" (17 pages!) and more on, "How to give an oral presentation." Surely the target audience should be the upper-year student, not the freshman.

If the biggest problem is the formulaic presentation, the best aspect is the numerous examples interspersed throughout the book. I was pleased to note that the examples, at least, are chosen to highlight the differences in scientific opinion that constantly arise and that younger scientists find baffling. Because science is generally taught as hard facts in high school, there is no indication that science is actually a refining process where theories are put to the test, elevated, or destroyed as work is done to test their validity. This process is amply demonstrated by the authors, in a wide variety of subdisciplines, all of which are fun to read, even for professors and other chemical professionals.

Therefore, I recommend this book for the senior undergraduate and graduate student who wants to refine/develop their scientific writing style. I'm skeptical about recommending the book to freshmen, in spite of the number of pages devoted to freshman topics, because I'm not as happy with those chapters.

4 out of 5 stars Writing About Chemistry.......2001-12-08

In A Short Guide to Writing about Chemistry Herbert Beall and John Trimbur describe how to write in chemistry. Beall is an expert in writing books about chemistry and Trimbur wrote books about reading and writing. With these two authors combined for one book, there was no doubt that this book would be a top seller. The book thoroughly discusses how to write research papers, literature reviews, critiques, persuasion essays, and lab reports. The book describes what chemists read and write about.
To understand chemistry you must find what is significant, make a model, and reason by analogy. The book describes how to read a chemistry textbook, study for tests or quizzes, and take lecture notes. All of these hints are good for a college student in chemistry.
The book gives step by step details as the chapter goes along. It gives good details for visual aids, and how to rehearse before delivering your speech if you have to do an oral presentation. The lab report chapter is very useful because it's not just enough to understand the concepts, but you must write out a lab report.
After the authors describe the steps to follow, they give an example and then practice problems. The book includes websites to look at for a chemistry article and good engines to use when searching for a certain chemistry concept.
The book covers so much information that any student at any level of study can understand the book. The book is designed mainly to get the students to communicate in the chemistry language either by writing, reading, or giving oral presentations. With all of the great things found in this book, it is no surprise that it was successful at helping students and professors alike in writing about chemistry.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for writing lab reports in college........2007-03-06

Every time I have to do a lab report, I use this book. No exceptions. Although I cannot comment on the other aspects of the book in (check out the "Look Inside!" Table of Contents), its guidance for writing lab reports is helpful to the utmost. Before this book, I made in the high 80s on my lab reports; now it is rare that I go below a 95. The book is full of what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. For example, never give purpose to evolution (I am paraphrasing, of course). Birds did not evolve flight to escape predators or to travel long distance; they evolved flight because a series of random DNA mutations turned forelimbs into wings, and that increased their survival rate. That is just one of numerous examples, and, best of all, all of the examples given are extremely relevant to college students because the material comes from college-level lab reports. Still, all of my biology professors have this book, in one edition or anther, on their shelves. This review refers to the 5th edition.

5 out of 5 stars The only writing manual you'll ever need.......2007-01-26

I've used this book since I was a freshman biology major. I'm now a Ph.D. student and I still reference this book. I've read other writing manuals designed for students in the sciences, but I've found that nothing is as clear and useful to students in the life sciences as this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful........2006-02-26

My daugther is the one that uses this and she finds it very helpful to understanding the lessons.

5 out of 5 stars An essential for all students........1999-02-04

As a university professor teaching budding biologists, I've found this book to be excellent. As the other reviewer said, I wished I had this book when I was a student. I, too, had to learn things the long and hard way. Pechinik has done a great service to science students. Let's hope we see more good writing out of this next generation of young scientists.

                5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......1998-03-27

Every biology undergraduate should read this book. I wish I'd known about it when I was an undergraduate; it contains most of the information I had to learn the hard way.
