Named for a psychological condition that often afflicts visitors to the Middle East, The Jerusalem Syndrome provides a vivid and comedic sense of what it's like to believe you're a conduit for the voice of God. In this case, the affliction belongs to standup comic Marc Maron, whose brief, engrossing memoir recounts a lifelong parade of revelation and delusion. In New Jersey, in New Mexico, and in Israel (among many other places), Maron has found God in encounters with Beat poetry, cocaine, the Coca-Cola logo, and conspiracy theories. Brief chapters sketch Maron's picaresque adventures, all narrated in a relentlessly neurotic style: "I had just made a horrible but good decision." Maron's decidedly nontraditional perspective on Judaism--"Believing in the grand plan can take the edge off if you let it, because it really doesn't end well for anyone"--may strike some readers as blasphemous. To others, it will seem revelatory, and for the many in the middle, it will be both. --Michael Joseph Gross

                    Book Description

The Gospel according to Maron: a spiritual memoir of your average hyperintelligent, ultraneurotic, superhip Jewish standup comedian and seeker.

The Jerusalem Syndrome is a genuine psychological phenomenon that often strikes visitors to the Holy Land_the delusion that they are suddenly direct vessels for the voice of God. Marc Maron seems to have a distinctly American version of the Jerusalem Syndrome, which has led him on a lifelong quest for religious significance and revelation in the most unlikely of places.

Maron riffs on Beat phenomena with its sacred texts, established rituals, and prescribed pilgrimages. He spends some time exploring the dark side of things, as his obsessions with cocaine (known to Maron as “magic powder”), conspiracy theories, and famous self-destructive comedians convince him that the gates of hell open beneath Los Angeles. As his quest matures, he reveals the religious aspects of Corporate America, pontificating on the timeless beauty of the Coca-Cola logo and even taking a trip to the Philip Morris cigarette factory, where the workers puff their own products with a zealot-like fervor. The culmination of Maron’s Jerusalem Syndrome comes during his own tour of the Holy Land, where, with Sony camcorder glued to his eye socket, he comes face-to-face with his own ambiguous relationship to Judaism and reaches the brink of spiritual revelation_or is it nervous breakdown?

Marc Maron has considerably adapted and expanded his praised one-man show to craft a genuine literary memoir. Whether he’s a genuine prophet or a neurotic mess, he’ll make you laugh as you question the meaning of life.

“Marc Maron is blazingly smart, rapid-fire, and very funny . . . A brilliant and relentless screed.” –David Rakoff, author of Fraud

“Marc Maron is the first crazy person I’ve ever envied. In his brainiac-memoir-meets-hilarious-travelogue, he demonstrates the ability to tell a story with an extraordinary provocative intelligence that is regrettably shared by few.” _ Janeane Garofolo, comedian

                    1 out of 5 stars Absolute Crap.......2005-11-02

A complete waste of time. There were no original thoughts in this book at all. It is the standard fare from most tree hugging, left-wing, wacked out liberals. A lot of crap about how evil conservatives are etc without backing any of it up. Before you read this pile of refuse, do yourself a favor and buy a gallon of gas and a match. That way when you are finished, you can burn the book and maybe save a few bucks on your home heating bill.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2005-04-15

The author is a lazy slacker who's never had an original thought in his entire life. Before buying this book do youself a favor(and save some money) take a hammer hold it in front of your face. Swing towards your forehead. Apply ice. This will give the same effect as reading this tripe.

3 out of 5 stars A few really good parts, anyway........2003-06-21

I bought this because I think Marc Maron's standup comedy is hilarious. I caught a brief appearance of him on Comedy Central awhile ago and it took me several months to find out the name of the guy who made me laugh so hard. After finally finding out who he was, I found out he has a CD, Not Sold Out, and this book, The Jerusalem Syndrome. The CD is hilarious and I highly recommend it. Since no other CDs or a DVD of his standup is available (yet, anyway - fingers crossed!), I went ahead and got the book because he wrote it, not really knowing what it was about, with pretty high expectations.

The book is a fragmentary autobiography of some events in Maron's life, very little of which is directly related to his career as a standup comic.

The brief first chapter foreshadows the events that will occur later in the book during Maron's trip to Israel.

Chapters two through five cover Maron's life up to high school. I simply didn't find this stuff to be very interesting.

Chapter six covers Maron's college years, focusing on him adopting the Beat religion. The ideas and events in this chapter are very interesting, they're written about very well, and the chapter is very funny.

Chapter seven is another highlight of the book, covering the modest beginnings of his career as his comedian and his relationship (friendship is too strong of word) with Sam Kinison. Like the previous chapter the events here are interesting and funny, if not scary.

In chapter eight Maron recounts his foray into conspiracy theory, and how his credulity for that intellectual junk food led to him making a fool of himself. He does save some face, though, by turning his mind back on before the chapter is through. Maron does make a really good observation about conspiracy theory literature:

"The thing about conspiracy literature is that it's perfect for stupid people who want to seem smart and ground their hatred in something completely mystical and confusing, and it's good for smart people who are too lazy to do their homework. People can't argue with it without possibly implicating themselves."

What I don't get is, if this stuff really happened, how is it possible that he didn't learn from this and avoid the whole Jerusalem Syndrome thing, if that stuff really happened, too?

Chapter nine is hilarious, as Maron tells of his visits to a Philip Morris plant and the Coca-Cola museum. Maron gives great, detailed accounts of these visits and makes many humorous but true, if not obvious, observations.

Chapter ten provides a mish-mash of professional and personal experiences. I simply didn't think this stuff was very interesting or funny.

Chapters eleven through thirteen contain the events foreshadowed in the first chapter, including his trip to Israel and his experience with Jerusalem Syndrome. I don't know how much of this is true or exaggerated, but I thought most of this stuff was pretty stupid. Some of it is funny, but not in a very good way. Perhaps a Jewish person could relate to this more and find some value in it, but I could not.

Chapter fourteen is simply excellent. Maron returns home to do a benefit show for his old synagogue. He sees some friends and acquaintances from his youth and ends up helping out in a pretty big way. This concluding chapter is interesting and touching.

The Jerusalem Syndrome contains very little about Maron's career as a standup comic. There's a little bit about him getting his foot in the door as a comedian at The Comedy Store and then later a bit as he starts to make a name for himself with appearances on television. If you want more on the life and times of a standup comic, I don't think you can do any better than True Story, Bill Maher's fictional story of several standup comics trying to make careers for themselves during standup's golden years.

This book has some really good parts, but at least as many not so good parts. Perhaps the good parts make up for the not so good parts, but overall this was pretty disappointing considering how hilarious Maron's standup is. In any event, I'd rather just have more of Maron's standup comedy on CD or DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, frank, intelligent, worthwhile.......2002-04-18

Read this book. I read it in a day. I went back and underlined the good parts. I told a number of friends about it. You don't have to know anything about Judaism or Israel to appreciate Maron's spiritual journey. It's the funniest thing I've ever purchased online.

                          Book Description

A collection of eight original essays by distinguished scholars, this book examines the role of sports, particularly soccer and baseball, in Latin America from the late 19th century to the present. The first study of its kind, Sport and Society in Latin America vividly demonstrates the ways in which sport can be used to study various historical and social processes and expands our understanding of sport as a major form of social behavior in Latin America. The contributors analyze the relationship of sport to foreign penetration and cultural imitation, urbanization and the rise of mass society, social divisiveness and social integration, class conflict, politics, and nationalism and revolution.

2 out of 5 stars A reprint of Denizens of Darkness.......2004-12-16

This book is almost a reprint of Denizens of Darkness, the v3 RLMM. There are a total of seven (7) new monsters and a couple of extra subtypes for Dread Golems, Skeletons, Zombies and Different Strains of Vampire Spawn. Apart from that the only real difference is the addition of an index of monsters by CR and the REMOVAL of in-text explanations of some common special abilities, qualities and powers like Undead & Construct, these must be looked up in the Monster Manual I v3.5 You cannot use this book without it!

The Promised Revision of Skills & Feats is virtually nonexistent. I scoured through the first 35 pages and found only two changes to skills and the creatures had LESS SKILL POINTS! I found about three changes to feats but there were simply the addition of feats that seemed appropriate to creatures at higher HD. I could have done that myself.

I would not recommend this book unless you already own the Monster Manual I v3.5 and feel a desperate need to have official stats on all monsters. Otherwise if you don't have it buy the v3 Denizens of Darkness when it's going cheap. I will be obtaining MM1 v3.5 as this has instructions on creating monsters that should give me all I need to convert even old 2nd ed. monsters.

                          Book Description

There are lots of introductory C books, but this is the first one that has the no-nonsense, practical approach that has made Nutshell Handbooks(R) famous. C programming is more than just getting the syntax right. Style and debugging also play a tremendous part in creating programs that run well and are easy to maintain. This book teaches you not only the mechanics of programming, but also describes how to create programs that are easy to read, debug, and update. Practical rules are stressed. For example, there are fifteen precedence rules in C (&& comes before || comes before ?:). The practical programmer reduces these to two: Contrary to popular belief, most programmers do not spend most of their time creating code. Most of their time is spent modifying someone else's code. This books shows you how to avoid the all-too-common obfuscated uses of C (and also to recognize these uses when you encounter them in existing programs) and thereby to leave code that the programmer responsible for maintenance does not have to struggle with. Electronic Archaeology, the art of going through someone else's code, is described. This third edition introduces popular Integrated Development Environments on Windows systems, as well as UNIX programming utilities, and features a large statistics-generating program to pull together the concepts and features in the language.

4 out of 5 stars great for self-learners.......2006-08-03

For anyone who has suffered through trying to read a beginners book on C only to end up getting lost half way through, you will find this book a huge relief. This book stresses things like how code so from a perspective of communicating logically. And how to comment thoroughly so their is no doubt what the code does. This is not the end all book on C, so you will want to move on to more advanced books on C after this one.

                          2 out of 5 stars File Creation!.......2006-05-19

This book starts off very strong and the author is very clear and concise. I learned alot... but then something happens... the author decides to wait for covering floats until after he covers File I/O and he rushes through that. I was completely left hanging with not one example of writing data to a file and the author expected me to be able to complete an exercise in which I need to write data to a file. After this...the next chapter back tracks to covering Floats... which should have been covered previously with the other data types.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners, but recommend a second book!.......2006-02-08

First of all, this book was absolutely wonderful. It did a very good job teaching me how to write C with very little knowledge of the language. However, there were some things that the author did (and skipped over) that are cleared up in "The C Programming Language", by Dennis Ritchie. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who doesn't have very much knowledge of C, because the writing style is clear and easy to follow. The author, for the most part, does a great job of explaining difficult concepts in an easy to understand manner; such as linked lists and trees. Once again, I would recommend another book as a follow up, such as "Expert C Programming".

4 out of 5 stars A very good book for beginners... .......2006-01-14

This is a very good book, but it has two problems:

1.- It is a little bit messy. For example, there are some control statements that are not with the others, not even in the same chapter... they are almost at the end of the book! why?! (The author said that those statements "are hardly ever used in real programming", which is true... but I think that order is a priority in a programming book).

2.- THIS BOOK IS VERY GOOD, but FOR BEGINNERS.
If you are NOT an expert C programmer, this book will be very good for you. You'll learn a lot of basic and very useful features about C language; you'll also learn some advanced features. But if you are an advanced C programmer, maybe you will learn just a little bit more than you already know...

However, this book has A LOT OF VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION (not only related with C language), for example: when you make a "right shift"... the new bits are 1 or 0?, or which operation is more "expensive" (slower): a printf() or a malloc()? etc., etc...

So, I think this is not a bad book... It is like an easier version of "The C programming language (Kernighan/Ritchie)", I mean: A very very good book for beginners... it is also a nice book for advanced programmers.

If you want to learn C from the very beginning, I recommend this book.
If you already know C and you want to know ADVANCED features... well... you can have this book in your collection but... get an advanced book.

                                  Book Description

This short work details the life and experiences of statesman Daniel Webster and his influence on the American political conservatism of the late-nineteenth century. Born in New England on January 18, 1782, Webster demonstrated startling powers of assimilation and retention even as a child. He received the best of his early education from newspapers, his mother's Bible, the political gossip of wayfarers at the farmhouse tavern and his father's exciting tales of great men and great battles. During his formal education at Dartmouth, Webster refined his prowess at public speaking, eventually evolving into one of the most skilled orators in America. He was to play a crucial role in the development of a conception of national conservatism that remains significant to our own times. Constructed from the building blocks of expansive but peaceful Americanism, popular self-discipline, Constitution worship, beneficent technology, realizable harmony of group interests, and power linked to property, Webster's conservative philosophy was embraced by the prominent New England merchants and prosperous country squires. His experience reveals the difficulties and dilemmas encountered by the people in our past who sought to develop a conservative philosophy for American politics. In examining Webster's vital philosophy, Richard Current's incisive analysis has a direct and continuing pertinence for the citizens of a democratic republic.

                                        Book Description

This book was originally printed in 1858, with an update in 1881. The value of this book is that it predates the revisionists who change history to accommodate current social and world political goals. Another worthy factor is that world history begins with the first man, Adam.

Each generation bases its future or fall upon the previous generation. This book affords us an understanding of the Christian principles and the lessons of history in Civil War days that were the basis of education. Whether the American republic rises to the next generation or falls upon the present one depends upon traditional education, not political indoctrination. The publisher recommends this book to the comprehensive school system--public, Christian, private, or home.

The description below is taken from the original text. Notice the expectations that are placed upon the student. This denotes the major flaw that occurs in our current education system.

"The design of the work is to furnish a CLEAR OUTLINE OF UNIVERSAL HISTORY suited to common schools. It is intended for beginners, and is therefore written in a simple style, and to render it convenient both for the pupil and teacher, it is divided into brief paragraphs and short chapters. Ample questions for examination are appended to the work. It will be seen that a pupil may commit the whole volume to memory during a winter's schooling; and if, in this brief space, a clear outline of Universal History may be established in the memory, it is obvious that the subject is worthy the attention of every person interested in education."

As a young woman, Jane Goodall was best known for her groundbreaking fieldwork with the chimpanzees of Gombe, Africa. Goodall's work has always been controversial, mostly because she broke the mold of research scientist by developing meaningful relationships with her "specimens" and honoring their lives as she would other humans.

Now at the age of 60, she continues to break the mold of scientist by revealing how her research and worldwide conservation institutes spring from her childhood callings and adult spiritual convictions. Reason for Hope is a smoothly written memoir that does not shy away from facing the realities of environmental destruction, animal abuse, and genocide. But Goodall shares her antidote to the poison of despair with specific examples of why she has not lost faith. For instance, she shares her spiritual epiphany during a visit to Auschwitz; her bravery in the face of chimpanzee imprisonment in medical laboratories; and devotes a whole chapter to individuals, corporations, and countries that are doing the right thing. But most of all Goodall provides a beautifully written plea for why everyone can and must find a reason for hope. --Gail Hudson

Those who know Jane Goodall through her many books, speeches, and National Geographic television specials, know she is obviously no ordinary scientist. She is a genuinely spiritual woman who cares passionately about the preservation and enhancement of life in all its forms.Based upon the many spiritual experiences that have graced and shaped her outlook on life, Dr. Goodall is convinced there is a higher purpose to life, and that this purpose can best be served by a sense of reverence for creation--a commitment to opening our hearts and minds to the spiritual ties that bind us to the Earth. In this book, Dr. Goodall takes us through the pivotal events of her life--her childhood in war-torn England, her relationship with the Leakeys, her groundbreaking work with the chimpanzees of Gombe--and in doing so, touches upon such topics as faith and love, mysticism and science, the origins of good and evil and evolution, and the existence of the soul and of God. She sheds light not only on why millions of people today are hungry for meaning, but on the steps we can take to transform our lives for the better, to rekindle our spirits and reawaken our minds.

I loan this book, give copies as gifts, and read it at least once a year. Dr. Jane Goodall's life, from her days as a young British girl with a love of animals and nature to her present incarnation as a world-renowned conservationist, advocate for threatened and endangered animals - particularly primates - and UN Messenger of Peace, is exemplary. In Dr. Goodall's own words, "We have a choice to use the gift of our lives to make the world a better place." Through this book, we may learn how Dr. Goodall has done just that.

Jane Goodall's "Reason For Hope" is an engaging, richly detailed life story. Raised in England, a lucky break through a friend takes Goodall to Africa for a job as a secretary. There she meets Louis Leakey, who is very impressed with her and helps to shape her career. Although she completes a PhD and spends time on book tours and teaching gigs, Goodall is most at home living amidst the wildlife. In fact, she makes it clear that she is most comfortable alone, observing chimpanzees. She finds her sprirituality there, drawn on a Christian upbringing in the UK. She also marries twice and has a son, and oversees students who visit her compound.

Although this is a traditional memoir, it is also very much about Goodall's faith. Despite many doubts about man's inhumanity to man, Goodall sees in nature (and in humans) several reasons to believe in a creator and in humankind. (She also has a supernatural encounter with a deceased relative.) Much of her spirituality is rooted in reverance for God's creation. Her life is an extraordinary one, but her faith is a common one.

An inspiring book that makes it clear just how influential one person can be in shaping the course of history. I found the book enlightining in a number of ways - from the behavior of chimps to raising children. This book is one I'd recommend to a number of different readers, as there's something for everyone.

                                                        5 out of 5 stars Reason for Hope : A Spiritual Journey.......2006-03-01

After a lifetime unraveling the mysteries of wild chimpanzees, renowned primatologist Jane Goodall bares her soul to readers, describing the spiritual underpinnings that have shaped her life, her work, and her outlook for the future.

Goodall has always defied scientific convention. Untrained as a scientist, but noticed by famed anthropologist Louis Leakey as a keen observer and a self-taught naturalist, Goodall was sent into the forests of Tanzania as a young woman to conduct a study of the chimpanzees. With her mother at her side and a cook to accompany them, Goodall began the research that would span her entire career and help reshape the way humans look at and study wild animals.

Reason for Hope chronicles Goodall's early years in war-torn England, the horrors of the Holocaust, and her years observing wild apes. It also records family joys and despairs, unsettling discoveries about our closest living relatives, and, eventually, the turmoil of witnessing nearby war, environmental destruction, and the plight of chimpanzees in medical laboratories.

As the title suggests, the power of this book lies in its optimism. Faced, at times, with more plights than possibilities, Goodall falls back on her own particular brand of faith to make sense of a harsh world. Her final chapters, a call to action, asks readers to join her in taking concrete steps toward making the world a better place for all animals, people included.

5 out of 5 stars Reason to Read!.......2005-12-02

The book is intriguing to say the least. There is no question that this is Jane's own soul searching put onto paper as well as words of wisdom from someone who is nothing short of wise. The book was enjoyable to read and I personally got much out of it. The last chapters of the book are worth reading in themselves. I don't know of many people who show the courage and integrity that Jane Goodall demonstrates. If more people would look up to positive figures such as Goodall, this world would surely be a better place.
