Winsor McCay: Early Works, Volume 6 will feature a selection of McCays first continuous comic strip, Mr. Goodenough, which ran from January 1904 to March 1905 in the Evening Telegram. The six-panel strip features a millionaire (Mr. Goodenough) who continuously tries to improve his life by becoming more active, the result of which inevitably leads to injury or discomfort for the hapless gentleman. In the last panel of every strip, the reader finds that Mr. Goodenough has once again resigned himself to living in sumptuous lethargy. This marks McCays first foray into a working formula that he would use again and again; since the last panel is the same every time, the buildup becomes the most important part. McCay used this formula for plot cohesiveness within many of his strips Little Sammy Sneeze, Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, and Little Nemo in Slumberland all featured last-panel repetition. Volume 6 also includes Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, A Pilgrims Progress, and a selection of New York American editorial cartoons.

Here's an unauthorized compendium for Trekkers who are unafraid of pointing the finger at oversights, and who know it's great fun to find the sloppy mistakes (or cost-cutting cheating) in a show that takes itself very seriously.

Great Book.......2002-06-10
This is one of the most gratifying books I have ever read. As a self-proclaimed grammar cop, it is great to know that someone is paying as much attention to detail as I do. I pull out the ol' Nitpicker's Guide every time I watch an episode of TNG, but I have also read it cover-to-cover about 5 times. I am absolutely amazed by the thoroughness of the author (as well as by the amount of free time he must have!) I love this book.
This book is great!.......2001-12-23
If you are into nitpicking, this book is great. While reading it, I was able to remember most of the scenes that were discussed, but the best way to read this book is with the episode playing in the background. Some nits require that you freeze and rewind to catch it. Each episode review contains trivia questions, but they are hard, so dont feel bad if you get them wrong. Also, Season seven is not covered in this one. It is included in part 2. I recommend this for al Trekkers. This author has also come out with a Deep Space Nine book, and Original series book, and an X-files book, as well as a sequel to this one. It must be nice to make a living nitpicking TV episodes!
If you want to know what's wrong with episodes..........1999-03-14
This book is hysterical and notices things I never would have dreamed of. It doesn't cover everything, so if you like this book you will also want to get the sequel. It's well organized and the second book includes nits that readers submitted. A pageturner.
Great for those people who go, "wait a minute...".......1998-08-06
I'm one of those people who picks up on continuity errors in movies and TV shows. I don't know how, but I catch some pretty odd ones. But with this book, Phil Farrand goes where no one has gone before. I don't know how the guy does it. Just make sure read the entry right at the beginning of the show so you can look for all the stuff. Some of it's hard to spot!
Good read but the trivia questions to easy.......1997-07-02
One of the only books to contain a complete review of each episode, instaed of a teaser. The technical nits can be very boring to read

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Samuel Crowl, Trustee Professor of English at Ohio University, is the author of Shakespeare Observed: Studies in Performance on Stage and Screen (Ohio, 1992).

Historic Contribution to Media History.......2007-09-16
Chronologically the beginning is a good place to start and Barnouw starts with KDKA, Pittsburgh, the nation's first radio station. From this point the entire telecommunications system branched out, grew, made moderations and exploded into the information age.
Tidbits on what were important issues of the time are humorous in retrospect. For example, at WEAF in New York there was discussion on whether something so personal as toothpaste should be advertised over the public airwaves. Critics such as Edgar Felix argued that "direct advertis(ing)" itself was resented by the public. As commercialization increased, the behind-the-scenes decision makers gained more control over the system. "Many programs were advertising agency creations, designed to fulfill specific sponsor objectives," Barnouw tells us.
PSAs (Public Service Announcements) followed campaigns designed to support the military in World War II. As the decades rolled on and power was concentrated in the networks, the U.S. Department of Justice filed an antitrust suit against the ABC, CBS, and NBC which charged them with monopolizing prime time entertainment. Television news began as 15 minute segments and was expanded to 30 minutes in 1963.
This book is informative and well-written. It explains how the foundations of the modern information society came about.

Great survey of takeout doubles and associated methods.......2005-09-27
Again Mike Lawrence writes the bible on a bridge topic. It is hard to imagine a more thorough treatment of the topic of takeout doubles. Mike writes on regular takeout doubles, delayed takeout doubles, balancing doubles, responding to doubles, etc. He touches on a number of expert treatments along the way.
A great book for all players. As with most of Mike's books, novices will find the material demanding.

Microsoft Office XP Inside Out is the foremost reference to Office XP for PC "super users". Complete in one volume, this book gives you a thorough overview of Microsoft's popular productivity suite and its new knowledge-sharing features and functions. The
Amazon.com
As office productivity suites grow more capable and network-wise, the demand placed upon their users--who typically are everyday office workers with no particular interest in software technology--grows dramatically. That's why a carefully compiled manual, like Microsoft Office XP Inside Out, is invaluable in an organization that expects its employees to use the new features of Microsoft Office XP. This book won't hold your interest if you attempt to read it straight through, and indeed it may strain your back when you lift it off the shelf. On the other hand, if you want a concise but comprehensive tutorial on the use of Excel's PMT function or FrontPage's new ability to output XML code--or any of hundreds of other details--this book has your number. Just check the jumbo-size index.
The book could have paid more attention to automating Office XP with Visual Basic. Even though more space is devoted to the programming language than most of the competition and the book does a good job of explaining the core language and key objects, a lot of its capabilities go unmentioned.
Otherwise, the authors do a wonderful job of explaining procedures and concepts whose power lies in their details. In explaining features, they'll typically present a procedure that covers the generic case, then discuss variations on that theme in longer paragraphs and special sidebars. As is the trend in books like this, screen shots are augmented with labels and instructions--this aids clarity and speeds up the answer-finding process. --David Wall
Topics covered: Everything that the programs in the Microsoft Office XP suite--Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Exchange, FrontPage, and Publisher--can do, including customization via Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to an extent. Creating, formatting, editing, sharing, storing, and the rest of the work that Office assists in is covered.

Help Fine- Tune Your Office XP Skills.......2004-12-14
Microsoft is the most popular producer of business application software. Its Word, Excel, Power Point, and other products are known the world over, and knowledge of these applications is essential for anyone working in business. If you use Office XP and have questions about using any one of these products, then this reference guide is a must for your home or office. With a length of almost 1,600 pages (!), this is possibly the longest guide of its kind in print today.
This book covers Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access, FrontPage, and Publisher. Most everyone is familiar with Word and Excel, and a large percentage of the population uses Outlook. These sections are the ones I turn to with the greatest frequency because they are great for troubleshooting and they are excellent for learning more about each one of these applications.
The sections on FrontPage, Power Point, Publisher, and Access are not quite as long, but they present some very useful information about these applications. I had never heard much about FrontPage or Publisher until I discovered them in this guide.
Like the other books in the "Inside Out" series, this one makes great use of screen shots to illustrate key points. It's one thing to read about an enhancement to an application, but it's another thing entirely to actually see how it will look on your screen. For example, chapter twenty- nine has a section on using Excel for advanced business analysis- a subject that can be intimidating to some. But this guide makes it all look easy with its constant use of snapshots, showing exactly what your spreadsheet will look like as you type in various commands.
Overall, this is an excellent reference material for users of Microsoft Office XP. Many guides exist for looking up tips and for troubleshooting, but the "Inside Out" series is the best. Extensive information, flawless organization, and frequent use of illustrations make this guide the best in its class.
A doubt about Binder.......2003-10-22
I have a question about this parse...
"The book also shows how to integrate Office XP applications by sharing data, using the Office Binder program"
Office XP comes without Binder program.
THE "INSIDE OUT" NAME IS NO EXAGGERATION!.......2002-12-05
The name of this book is no exaggeration. It has that "Inside Out" coverage. Both beginners and expert users of the software will find it useful. (Although that I will suggest a more concise introductory book like the "Office XP Step By Step" for most beginners).
This textbook has a good pattern, and includes many trouble-shooting tips. It has depth. You can just start from any chapter of your choice without having to know what the previous chapter was all about.
Also, the attached CD-ROM is a big asset. It contains every topic that you will find in the main text; and since the text is heavier than most laptops, mobile users are bound to appreciate the extra flexibility that this CD-ROM provides.
Enraged by the Companion CD.......2002-12-01
The book is quite good, but I would prefer more on VBA and Excel.
I am enraged by trying to use the CD. I am trying to read the section,
" MSN MoneyCentral Stock Quotes Add-in. "
About 1/5 of the screen width is taken by hotlinks to things that are not relevant to the subject. The line length of the text exceeds the 4/5 of the screen width so it is required to do a horizontal scroll for each line to read it. NOT GOOD.
Even a printout of the screen is truncated... It is possible to get a readable version by select/copy/ paste to wordpad...But I would think that Microsoft could produce a more user friendly CD.
Sincerely, Leo
Oscillates between too little and too much information.......2002-08-22
The most positive aspect of this book is that is also available as an ebook on its accompanying CD. It is certainly a starter book on Office XP, and there is probably not enough in each section to develop a depth of expertise. The section on VBA for instance is fairly general. However, if you are trying to come to terms with Office as a whole for the first time this is a worthwhile book compared with many others of similar size.
However, let me add one caveat. There is a companion volume 'XP Inside Out' which covers a lot of the ground covered in this book. I would recommend buying that volume first and then decide if you need Office XP Inside Out or one of the application specific Inside Out books.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

An Superb Debunking of The Anti-Nuclear Argument.......2003-12-01
The author with his extensive knowledge and wide experience demonstrates conclusively the fraud of the anti-nuclear energy ignoramuses and malicious enemies of human progress. Sims demonstrates that nuclear energy is a benign technology that can provides a reasonable safe and reliable source of energy for the bulk of the world's population. By critically examining the claims of the anti-nuclear spokesmen, Sims demonstrates the spurious nature of the entire anti-nuclear energy argument. This work is a necessary read for anyone concerned about the wlefare and progress of humanity.
Interesting.......2003-01-24
Interesting book, very fast read. It was nice to get the perspective of someone other than the usual anti-nuclear zealots. The only complaint is that it was from a Canadian point of view (and Im from the USA) so at times there was info that didnt really apply.
The Politics of Being Anti-Nuclear........1996-08-09
An excellent book for those readers who seek the real story of the anti-nuclear power movement. As a citizen environmentalist and former newspaper journalist who covered the Three Mile Island incident--and as one who " "bought in" to the anti-nuke, anti-science propaganda of the utopian '70s--this book is an eye-opener. I feel like a Moonie or Scientologist who has just been de-programmed. While there are flaws to the management of today's atomic stations, it becomes increasingly clear to the thinking, rational reader that atomics will indeed play an important part in 21st century energy production--both fission and fusion sources. A rare book with a brave voice. A rare presentation of technical and political facts, absurd agenda politics from the Left and Right, and notably the Left's politicized science and environmental doublespeak

Original 1985 game, published by Mindscape for Macintosh. "It has been more than forty years since the first nuclear bomb exploded. In that time, the shape of the world has changed dramatically. The power to destroy civilization rests in the hands of the superpowers and now, as either the President of the U.S. or as the General Secretary of the U.S.S.R., you have total responsibility for your nation's course. To succedd, you must enhance your country's prestige without infringing too much on your adversary's interests. If you play the isolationist, you will find yourself alone in a world dominated by your opponent. If you are too aggressive, you could unleash the war that annihilates humandkind - and both sides lose. Balance of Power uses a huge statistical database, a meticulously detailed display of the world, and advance artificial intelligence techniques to put you in command of one of the world's superpowers. You have vast amounts of information available as you press your country's interest and resist the pressure of the other side. Noted game designer Chris Crawford has created a model of the world which will entertain, educate, challenge, and perhaps frighten you in ways no computer game has ever done before." For Macintosh, on two 3.5 inch floppy discs.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A660803. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Navy's peacetime mission is 'to conduct forward presence operations to help shape the strategic environment by deterring conflict, building interoperability, and by responding, as necessary, to fast breaking crises with the demonstration and application of credible combat power. 'To meet this mission, the Navy deploys aircraft carriers to forward positions throughout the world. A new nuclear powered aircraft carrier costs over $3.4 billion dollars and when deployed carries over 6,000 personnel onboard. Considering the cost and the man hours involved in carrier operations judicious and effective use of these valuable assets is imperative. The CINCPACFLT Operations Department maintains a five year deployment plan for the six carriers assigned to the Pacific Fleet. Currently, the deployment schedule is produced manually. A feasible five year plan typically takes the carrier scheduling officer one week to generate. This thesis presents an optimization based tool to assist in constructing deployment schedules that maximize the forward presence of Pacific Fleet carriers. The underlying optimization model is different from those in the literature. Instead of using a set covering approach, the problem is formulated as a shortest path problem with side constraints. This formulation allows the problem to be solved more rapidly, thus allowing more opportunities for sensitivity and trade-off analyses.
