CLAM'S GOT HANDS!.......2000-04-05
The thing that makes B.C. probably one of the last reallyenjoyable comic strips to read is the dry humour that creator JohnnyHart inserts in every comic strip. Most would think that the combination of dry wit and these simply drawn silly looking characters wouldn't work, but they do. The expressions that Mr. Hart incorporates in every character plus the silly punchlines will make you confused whether to laugh at the joke or the characters. B.C. has stood the test of time and is still as funny as it was back in the 1950's.

Customer Reviews:
Totally worthless!!!.......2006-08-22
Not only does the book begin to literally fall apart after a few months of use (pages disengage from the binding), the way the book is written is absolutely atrocious.
The author will explain some procedure (step 1,2,3...) as if that's all you need to know to be able to perform that procedure. However, she consistently leaves out a vital step (that she had apparently explained several hundred pages earlier) assuming that you have read and remembered what she said about that vital step. (no doubt the author is thinking "Dummy! I explained that step on page 97.)
Instead of showing you everything (in detail) you need to know about a specific procedure, she simply states it.
The book is totally worthless. Unfortunately, now I know why they name it CS2 Reference for Dummies. If you buy it, you're a dummy.
The Adobe reference manual that came with CS2 is easier to read and provides a better (albeit brief) understanding of the procedures.
(Photoshop CS2 all-in-one Reference for Dummies is probably the worst book I've ever bought from Amazon.)
One Book Short.......2006-03-09
This Photoshop book claims to be 9 books in 1. That may be, but they should have added a tenth to this compilation. There is absolutely nothing in the book about one of Photoshop's most powerful programs: Camera Raw.
I consider this to be a major flaw for this book. There is even a 300 page book on the market that deals just with Camera Raw (Real World Camera Raw with Photoshop CS2 by Bruce Fraser). If you are just using an inexpensive camera that only uses jpeg or perhaps tiff files then you can't use the Raw program. I would assume, however, that if you are shelling out $500+ for Photoshop you are probably using a decent camera that utilizes Raw files. The Raw program is an amazing program within Photoshop that lets you make numerous adjustments and corrections to your pictures before they are opened into the basic Photoshop program. It's a fascinating program, and you are missing an awful lot if you are not incorporating it into your photograph work flow.
So for many enthusiasts this definitely cannot be the only book you buy, unless, of course, you find the Adobe manual a sufficient resource for you.
As other reviewers have indicated the tutorials in the book are generally well written, and the author usually tells you the purpose of each step in a process.
I find one other weakness in the book, and that is a lack of an accompanying CD of pictures used in the text. There are about 5 pictures that can be downloaded from the website, but this is a minimal amount. It has always been most useful to me to learn by working on the exact pictures used in the text instructions. This would seem especially useful to those who are new to photoshop. There are several excellent books on the market that include a CD or have downloadable pics - for example, Katrin Eisman's book Photoshop Restoration and Retouching, 3rd edition, has over 100 megabytes of downloadable pics that are used in the text
A Very Complete Reference Book.......2005-10-19
Except for the yellow cover, this just doesn't look like a For Dummies book. As soon as you open it you start to see color printing everywhere. There must be dozens, if not hundreds of four color images, and they are scattered throughout the book. (Even the usual 'For Dummies' cartoons are in color.) This isn't at all like a lot of books that only have a few color plates. It also appears to be a higher quality paper that looks brighter than the other books in the series. This makes sense because Photoshop is a highly color oriented software package. The really nice thing about all this is that they didn't raise the cost significantly. A lot of books printed like this one are twice the price.
Of course the real test of a book is not its appearance, but its content. This book is aimed at the beginner to intermediate level user. It kind of combines a tutorial and a reference approach. The first few chapters are really introductory. It doesn't make much sense to jump around in them. But after that the chapters are pretty much stand alone. You can use the index or the general chapter heading to find the particular area that interests you and get the information you need.
This is a welcome addition to photoshop literature. While it's aimed at the beginner, even an expert will find a few points that will help him on his next project. The author runs a graphic design studio in Ventura, CA. She has written several other books on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and teaches at local colleges.
Note that this book only covers Photoshop as part of the CS2 package. You may also want to consider 'Adobe Creative Suite 2 All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies' to cover the other parts of the suite.
Get Book for both Beginners and More Advanced Users.......2005-10-07
I felt compelled to write this after reading the first review of this book on Amazon. The person found this book very difficult to read. I am utterly amazed by this. I am a heavy Photoshop user now, but two years ago I was an absolute novice. This is a book I would loved to have had for my version of Photoshop then. It is well written, easy to understand, very well organized and even though I am beyond being a beginner now, there are parts of Photoshop I never bothered to learn about or couldn't understand from other books (even now). I flip to that part of the book and I find a well written and very understandable discusion of that topic. I have been able to learn so much from this book because it is so well written and easy to understand. If the person who left the book is looking for an easier to understand book I certainly wish them luck because this book is one of the best for beginners and more advanced users who never understood certain concepts. The book is also beautifully illustrated and for the price, it is printed on very nice paper. I give this book five stars and would give more stars if allowed.
difficult to read not like other dummies series.......2005-09-24
This book is big, is on quality paper with color pictures. It seems to cover a little more than other basic books. These are the good things about it. On the other hand is like a texbook: without any task oriented information, it lists the features and then in each and every paragraph would tell you that you can read more in Book xx, chapter xx, without even a page reference. Very diffficult to read. I'm curious if the bookstore would take it back.
Book Description
'Die if you must, but never kill' was the injunction of the enlightened leader of the Brazilian movement to 'civilize' the Indian population in the first part of the 20th century. Years of exploration and exploitation of the Amazon's resources had revealed that those tribes living in the interior would need somehow to be brought into the modern world. Hemming describes the slow process of exploration, contact, their customs and practices and, disturbingly, their almost immediate decline on meeting modern man. He describes too, the change of heart which has led to a renaissance of tribal culture. It is heartening to learn finally that there are as many as 40 tribes still living in the Amazon forests-protected.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the wait!.......2005-10-28
I think it's been about 18 years since I bought 'Amazon Frontier' by John Hemming, the second book in his trilogy charting the history of contact between the indians of Brazil and the invaders from Europe. Since that day I've been eagerly awaiting the hoped for final book. In brief 'Die if You Must' does not disappoint at all. It is clearly well researched, factual with a strong dash of humanity and crammed with stories and information that thrilled me, saddened me, horrified me and ultimately left me with feelings of hope. The accounts of first contacts with hitherto unknown, understandably wary or hostile people are incredibly intense and I found it easy to imagine the mutual terror and excitement felt by both the indigenous nations and the people seeking to contact them. Stories of tribal revitalization and resistance in the face of seemingly unsurmountable opposition are great to hear. We hear tales of honour, shame, morality, courage, grief and guilt in the very personal accounts of people both indigenous and neo-Brazillian in the wider scope of the book. It's a shame that like so many other pages in history, that of the indigenous peoples of Brazil is one that is sadly neglected by the media and writers alike. Thankfully there are still people like John Hemming determined enough to bring their stories and histories to a wider audience. A fantastic book, detailed maps and information, I could go on and on. Best piece of non-fiction I've read in years. Incredible!

"The Humanistic Tradition is quite simply the finest book of its type. Fiero manages to integrate the political, cultural, and social history of the world into one coherent and fascinating whole. It is a masterpiece of scholarship . . . balanced, interesting, easy to read, and consummately beautiful. Our professors praise its accuracy and scope and our students unanimously say it is their favorite textbook." — Sonia Sorrell, Pepperdine University
The Humanistic Tradition features a flexible, topical approach that helps students understand humankind's creative legacy as a continuum rather than as a series of isolated events. This widely acclaimed interdisciplinary survey offers a global perspective, countless illustrations, and more than 150 literary sources. Available in multiple formats, The Humanistic Tradition explores the political, economic, and social contexts of human culture, providing a global and multicultural perspective which helps students better understand the relationship between the West and other world cultures.
Book Description
Who were the five strangest mathematicians in history? What are the ten most interesting numbers? Jam-packed with thought-provoking mathematical mysteries, puzzles, and games, Wonders of Numbers will enchant even the most left-brained of readers. Hosted by the quirky Dr. Googol--who resides on a remote island and occasionally collaborates with Clifford Pickover--Wonders of Numbers focuses on creativity and the delight of discovery. Here is a potpourri of common and unusual number theory problems of varying difficulty--each presented in brief chapters that convey to readers the essence of the problem rather than its extraneous history. Peppered throughout with illustrations that clarify the problems, Wonders of Numbers also includes fascinating "math gossip." How would we use numbers to communicate with aliens? Check out Chapter 30. Did you know that there is a Numerical Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? You'll find it in Chapter 45. From the beautiful formula of India's most famous mathematician to the Leviathan number so big it makes a trillion look small, Dr. Googol's witty and straightforward approach to numbers will entice students, educators, and scientists alike to pick up a pencil and work a problem.
Customer Reviews:
I love Mathematics.......2005-09-27
I am still reading the book.
It is elementar, but very interesting.
A delightful collection of mathematical puzzles.......2005-07-14
This book contains a delightful collection of mathematical puzzles in the tradition of Martin Gardner. There are Klingon Paths, Hexagonal Cats, Messages from the Stars, and Doughnut Loops. If you liked the puzzles in Pickover's "Alien IQ Test", you will like the puzzles in this book.
The book is not all numbers. There are historical anecdotes and stories about mathematicians told by the author's alter-ego, Dr. Googol. Are all mathematicians insane? The answer is not clear. However, the author describes the five strangest. Did you know that Pythagoras believed that it was sinful to eat beans?
There are a number of interesting top ten lists. As one who thinks that the proper role of mathematics is to solve the problems of the physical world, I was happy to note that Dr. Googol chose equations of physics for six of the ten most important mathematical expressions, e.g. Gauss' law and Newton's law of gravitation. Dr. Googol must have some physicist friends.
This is just one in a series of wonderful books that Dr. Pickover has written. I also recommend "The Science of Aliens", "Time: A Traveler's Guide", and his new book "A Passion for Mathematics".
Mind blowing !!.......2004-07-02
The book provides very valuable information about mathematics. The language is simple and any leyman can understand it well. The book also provides brain teasers to refresh your mind. And DEFINATELY this book will generate your interest in Mathematics. Thanks Clifford Pickover.

More unusual mathematics from a master.......2004-05-25
Narrated by the outstanding and eccentric mathematician Dr. Francis Google, this book is a collection of unusual mathematics problems, from those involving very large numbers to those defined by applying operations. For example, the Leviathan number (10^666)! is used to demonstrate that it is not necessary to compute a number to learn some of the properties that it has. Sets of numbers such as apocalyptic numbers, those that involve 666, the number of the beast, appear several times. One of my favorites are the Schizophrenic numbers, defined by the formula f(n) = 10 * f(n-1)+n, f(0) = 0, which is a set of integers demonstrating a simple pattern. However, the action starts when the square roots of the numbers are taken. These roots exhibit an unusual, repeated pattern in their digits.
Some incidents of mathematical history that are interesting trivia are also used. The number 365, 365, 365, 365, 365, 365 is supposedly the largest number that was ever squared in the head of a human. Other segments were based on surveys, where people answered questions such as, "Which would have had the greatest impact on the world as we know it today: `If Albert Einstein had lived another twenty years with a clear mind?', `If mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan had lived another twenty years with a clear mind?", If Steven Hawking was not afflicted with Lou Gehrig's disease?'." A ranking of the top eight female mathematicians of all time, a listing of the five greatest scandals in mathematics history, the ten most important unsolved mathematical problems, the ten most influential mathematicians of all time, the ten most influential mathematicians alive today and the ten most difficult areas of mathematics to understand provide additional intellectual fodder.
Every time I read a Pickover book, the number of ideas used as the seeds to generate the text astounds me. He always seems able to come up with new twists on old problems and sometimes new problems that set your brain moving in circular motions as you try to comprehend the consequences of the statements and attempt to follow the logical consequences of the transformations. While some of the best books keep you reading from page to page without stopping, others cause you to read a little, process a lot and then read some more. That is what this book did to me, and I am sure that it will do the same to you.
Published in the recreational mathematics e-mail newsletter, reprinted with permission.
Zero Substance.......2004-03-06
After reading this book (I do not bother reading even a half), many would be thrilled that they now has ten times of stuff about mathematics to talk about on a coffe table, but they should also realize that they know exactly as much mathematics as they had before.
