        Book Description

Created by Canadian cartoonist Sandra Bell-Lundy, the syndicated comic strip Between Friends offers a near-telepathic view of the female psyche and illustrates the essence and angst of modern women today. Between Friends chronicles the highs and lows of three archetypal women in their early forties who have known each other since high school: Susan, who balances her full-time job with her responsibilities at home; Maeve, the divorced, sophisticated professional who's always searching for Mr. Right; and Kim, who works at home while taking care of her six-year-old stepson. Readers will recognize themselves and their friends in this contemporary slice-of-life strip. Susan, Maeve, and Kim talk to each other about things like aging, dating an ex, motherhood, guilt, personal time, and the pros and cons of Botox. Bell-Lundy obviously has struck a chord with countless enthusiastic fans, such as reader Valerie Hastings: "My husband teases me that you must be related or a good friend because you seem to have an inside track on my mind!" Reader Kim Turner agrees: "As a working mother with a supportive spouse and two 'daycared'-for children, I continually look forward to seeing glimpses of my own life in your work." Coffee, Tea, and Reality is sure to delight the millions of women whose lives parallel the angst-driven, stress-filled glory of the Between Friends gang.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolute favorite.......2004-11-05

I was thrilled to see this collection because "Between Friends" is one of my absolute favorites. I've become so involved with the characters' lives over the years because they portray such real-life situations and contend with the same issues my friends and I face on a daily basis. I loved it when Susan and Harv adopted their daughter, Emma. This book includes the series where Susan meets Emma's biological mother in the park unexpectedly. The strips are so funny but still manage to bring tears to my eyes at times. This is a wonderful, insightful, funny strip that gives a true-to-life look at contemporary women.

Snoopy deals with the difficulty of writing and creativity with great humor. He also takes rejection in his stride. As always, Charles Schulz draws the strips well and is very cute to look at.

"After a tsunami / can you hoe up the bones? / can a kangaroo be infinite/ / can an outlaw be charted/" asks a censor in Two-Reelers, Scene Two of Buster Keaton Enters Into Paradise. Dick Higgins makes a metaphysics out of spoken language, a turning of language against itself. With two friends he played eleven scoreless games of Scrabble, using the lists of words formed to write the play's eleven scenes. The players began each game with "Buster Keaton" spelled out in the center of the board. The play's dream-like speeches and stage directions refract Buster Keaton's film plots showing an outsider pasing through phases of rejection and desire until the qualities which make him an outsider allow him to triumph in the end. "Is there a toy for Buster? / there was a fire of toys / at the gazebo / where he had purred. / in the movies?" As Keaton said, "Think slow, act fast."

Many people believe that everyone who uses heroin is addicted. In fact, this is true of only about 20 percent of heroin users. By clearing up common misconceptions like these, this book provides information that can save the lives of people using the drug. The author recounts heroin's history, details its chemistry, tells what users need to know to avoid addiction, and demystifies the life of a user: from buying to administering to detoxing and staying clean.

5 out of 5 stars Real AND Realistic Information.......2002-04-04

I found this book to provide information with much clarity and in language that the real world can relate to, rather than the usual propoganda and scare tactics utilized to "keep people from indulging." The author is clearly aware that even if the entire world supply of any type of "recreational drug"were completely erradicated(and it never will be) there will ALWAYS be a demand - people have always "self-medicated" and there are no amount of laws/restrictions that will ever stop their desire to do so. That can only come from the person from within to decide to refrain from partaking in items that are not good for them. It's unfortunate that such information as provided in this book is so hard to find, as I truly think if more people had access to this objective and REAL information, it would be revolutionary in that people would in fact make the right decisions for their lifestyle, rather than "learning the hard way"(i.e., billions of people in prison, etc.)-which doesn't work anyway - that route only destroys otherwise productive lives and it certainly is not condusive to "rehabilitating" any body.

1 out of 5 stars Shallow and inaccurate.......2002-03-07

I would not recommend reading this book as the information is often technically inaccurate and misleading. There are many other books that provide much better and more accurate information.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-28

This book is excellent for someone with no experience with MySQL. (Like Me!) It steps you through installation, setup, and use without assuming prior knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction and Reference for MySQL.......2006-06-30

Learning MYSQL can be a little daunting for beginners because its open-source and you have to do some research in getting the right information sometimes. This book is aimed at the beginner who wants to get their feet wet with MYSQL and also how to use it with many of the more popular development platforms such as Java, Perl and PHP.

It is easy to read through because of its column-based format with enough snapshots and visual guides to prevent you from getting eye strain. º

It first focuses on getting up and running on MySQL with the installation process on Windows or Mac or Linux (and UNIX). The book gives you all the links to install all the components of the database plus additional tools that will streamline you development process. There is also good information on how to upgrade your version of MySQL

The next chapter explains how to get you up and running in MySQL in the three different OS¡¦s with specifics on: Using mysqladmin, setting root password, using mysql client, setting up user privledges (creating new users) and starting and stopping services. A kinda detailed brief overview of how to be a MySQL admin.

Chapter 3 focuses on database design which usually can be kinda boring talking about normalization, importance of keys, table relationships, etc but the book only gives you the information you need with nice visuals to reinforce what is tauaght.

Chapter 4 goes over the MySQL and SQL commands in creating a database and table(s) with emphasis on field data types. Chapter 5 is a very useful chapter on basic SQL commands, since what is a database without the user knowing SQL, right? The author very succinctly reviews the SELECT statement for retrieving data, the UPDATE statement for updating records, DELETE and INSERT (you can guess what those two do). The book also goes into detail about table JOINS and filtering data with the WHERE, LIKE and GROUP BYclauses. A great resource chapter for the times you forget your basic syntax (which most people do from time to time).

Chapter 6 through 9 reviews how each of the more popular server-side web languages (PHP, Perl, and Java) use MyQL is used to retrieve, populate and update via web pages. The book provides code examples of the MySQL functions are specific to each language. Starting from how to connect to the database; how to execute commands; how to retrieve and display data (looping through records); how to incorporate error handling and how to secure your data. Depending on your preference, you will at least one of these chapters very helpful.

The next chapter focuses on new features in MySQL version 5 (stored procedures, triggers and views). These are somewhat advanced topics to a point but are covered wonderfully that even the newbie can understand.

The book finishes up with database administration issues such as performing and scheduling backups, logging, importing/exporting and repairing corruption issues.

A great introduction to MySQL that really can be your all-in-one reference as well.

4 out of 5 stars A good starting point for beginners to mysql.......2005-10-24

The book is a bit out of date since it's assuming mysql version 3 is current and currently mysql v5 is what is currently released, but it has good instructions on installing mysql on multiple platforms as well as managing on multiple platforms

4 out of 5 stars Review of MySQL: Visual QuickStart Guide.......2005-08-12

Well organized with a practical approach. Buyers without previouis acquaintance with PHP programming language will have some difficulty. Otherwise the text is a great 'introduction'.

                  4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-07-07

This contains some good information, but there are better books out there.

I give it a 7.2937 out of 10 using my advanced book review calculation system.

                      Book Description

First published in 1958, The Southeast in Early Maps is William Cumming's classic study of the mapping of the Southeast before the American Revolution. By analyzing printed and manuscript maps of the area in the light of other contemporary primary documents, the book traces the expansion of geographical knowledge about the Southeast over the course of its discovery and colonization.

With 124 illustrations—including a new gallery of 24 color reproductions of maps selected from the Cumming Collection in the E. H. Little Library at Davidson College—this stunning edition will be a valuable reference for scholars, collectors, cartographers, geographers, historians, archaeologists, archivists, librarians, genealogists, and surveyors. It features an introductory essay on the early historical cartography of the region, an extensive annotated checklist of printed and manuscript local maps from the colonial period, an updated bibliography, and a new section on the role of Native Americans in the mapping of the Southeast.

I ordered a copy of this book, it said it had map in the back, no map, I wrote and they sent another book, the other one does not have a map either, so if I am paying for a map, I want a map or a reduction of the price of the book, also I cannot find out how to return the 1st or 2nd book.

I ordered this book, based on the many references made to it in other publications. In terms of narrative content, it certainly lived up to my expectations, having more specific information on early Creek towns than anything else I had read. What is missing in this soft cover edition is a detailed map or maps, and that is terribly unfortunate in my case, since I needed it for reference. The listing on Amazon states that a map is included, which is not true and misleading for the buyer.

The idea that we live in an "information economy" is much less of a novelty than the computer geeks and business gurus would have it. For proof, consider "The Early Mapping of Southeast Asia," a history of economics, ideology and adventure masquerading as a gorgeous coffee table book.
The key piece of information was the route to the fabulously (and actually) rich Spice Islands. The story of how Europe evaded the Moslem blockade and reached both India and the undiscovered Americas in the 1490s has been often told. Seldom, however, has the Europe-Southeast Asia story been told from such a comprehensive viewpoint as Thomas Suarez'.
He starts at the very beginning. At a time Christian maps showed a simple T inside an O to divide the three continents, several Southeast Asian societies were drawing their own maps inspired by religious cosmology.
The Thais called these maps of the universe cakkavala, but other peoples had something similar. At the center, instead of Jerusalem, was Mount Sumeru, the link between earth and heaven.
In Europe, Ptolemy speculated that Africa curved around to meet the Asian mainland, which would have made the Indian Ocean into a closed sea like the Mediterranean. As a result, for centuries no one considered traveling around Africa to the Spiceries. (It appears no one considered whether the outside of this mythical barrier might have been worthwhile to reach.)
Ptolemy's barrier had its skeptics, and some correct information was available in Europe, primarily itineraries (like Marco Polo's) rather than maps. But it proved difficult to separate the reliable from the misconceived.
As Suarez shows, Europeans eventually figured out that there were two big peninsulas jutting south from Asia, India and Southeast Asia.
But because of confusion, which only increased when Columbus discovered the Americas, some geographers decided there were three peninsulas. Others moved Asian cities as far as the coast of Peru.
It didn't help that Columbus struck the biggest concentration of islands in the New World. Europeans already knew Southeast Asia was full of islands. So for quite a while, the West Indies were believed to be the East Indies.
Until the Portuguese actually got there around 1500, Europeans were sadly mistaken about even the biggest features of Southeast Asian geography. For centuries, Ceylon and Sumatra were confused, and some mapmakers doubted the existence of Java.
However, once the science-minded Europeans arrived, the situation cleared up dramatically. In about a century the major questions were resolved. During the same period -- 1500 to the late 1600s, printed maps started replacing manuscript charts. (Most old maps and prints that survive today were bound in books or atlases. Loose sheets tended to be destroyed.)
From an early date, some Southeast Asian kings took a sophisticated interest in Western mapping, but many of them held a completely different idea of political boundaries.
In an odd twist, the sovereigns in Thailand, especially, took up modern scientific mapping as a defense against British expansionism through Burma in the 19th century.
The local kings, says Suarez, did not have a concept of definite political borders. Big states exercised decreasing levels of control over more and more distant dependencies, signified by more or less regular payments of tribute, not lines on paper.
If the locals were puzzled by the strange habits of the British, they learned quickly.
Suarez says it was a mistake on the European maps that helped Thailand evade colonial conquest until the Japanese came in 1942. Because longitudes were uncertain, both the British and the French thought Thailand was much narrower, east to west, than it really is. So small, it was not worth conquering.
"Early Mapping of Southeast Asia" is both an eye-popping and an eye-opening book. It has lots of maps, many in color; and lots of curious adventures, surprising discoveries and seldom-heard tales from the eastern side of the east-west divide.
It has a splendid companion, 'The Early Mapping of the Pacific,' which I have also reviewed.

Black and white and color maps accompany extensive text references in this survey of early maps of Southeast Asia. While this might prove a very specific guide for Asian collections, cartography and art libraries will also want to consider its value: Suarez provides an excellent history of the region and its geographical importance, examining the history of its representation and exploration.

                                      Book Description

The first half of the twentieth century was of one of the most turbulent periods in Europe's history. While social theorists challenged orthodox ways of thinking about the establishment of a "good society," scientists offered up new visions of the workings of the universe. Women fought for increased power within the altered social landscape, and change and controversy reigned in the worlds of art and culture. The chaos of world politics ushered in the two great wars, which would forever alter Europe's position in the world. Europe, 1890-1945 offers a concise, accessible overview of this tumultuous time period. It provides a clear outline of the political events that shaped the age and offers a discussion of the seismic shifts in social and cultural landscapes. Topics covered include the rise of modernism in the arts, Social Darwinism and its effects on theories of race, the making of "national" identities, the origins of the modern ecology movement, and the changing roles of women in an era of war and violence. The authors thoroughly analyze the causes and effects of the two great wars, while reaching beyond Europe to discuss the events in the United States, Africa, and Asia that contributed to the evolving face of world politics.
