    Product Description

Dave Nestler is primarily known as a gallery-level painter who specializes in sexy girls. His ability to create realistic portraits of fantasy women fetch nose-bleed prices, and his work is in constant demand. When his first sketchbook was assembled, we knew it would interest those who like to go behind-the-scenes to see what goes into a painting, but were delighted to see it become one of our best selling books of 2004. Seems people really like Dave's eye for the ladies, even in sketch form, so Mr. Nestler dutifully began collecting a new series of drawings for a second volume. Featuring a new painting that continues the ever-popular "Naughty School Girl" motif, this book has more of what made Volume One so popular - girls, girls, and sure -more girls, as only Dave Nestler can create!

5 out of 5 stars SECOND DAZZLING COLLECTION FROM NESTLER.......2005-10-07

I really hate Dave Nestler. As a person who used to love to draw, Nestler makes me never want to pickup a pencil again. He's just too damn good. I don't think it would be a stretch to call him the finest pin-up artist working today. Dave's got it rough, too. He has all of these beautiful models come in to pose nude for him...nice work if you can get it. "Bad Girls Ride Again" is the second Dave Nestler sketch book from SQP and contains another 64 pages of his outstanding pencil work. His work combines a traditional pin-up feel with modern day eroticism. I dare you to try to find one bad piece in this book. Gosh I really hate this guy!

Nestler's ability to capture a photo-realistic look in just pencil is simply extraordinary. He's one of the very few artists whose drawings look every bit as good, and are every bit as frameable as their finished paintings. His women radiate sexiness! Take the beauty on page 7 dressed in a fishnet top and thigh high leather boots, or Nestler's "police woman" dressed in short, almost no-shorts and a mini-top. This is one cop you'd kill to get stripped-searched by. Then there is that home-spun country girl on page 17 that captures that "Mary Ann" look.

A two page spread shows a woman lying on a bed, wrapped in leather straps. There are actually a whole series of pieces with this theme and you can see the actual photographs of the models on Nestler's website. I also love the two page, centerfold-style spread featuring a drop dead gorgeous blonde riding a stool backwards. Another great two pager is the Hawaiian girl with her clamshell bikini top and grass skirt. Like I said...I dare you to find one piece that doesn't make your jaw drop.

The book also features a preliminary sketch section where you can see many of the rough sketches that Nestler used for many of his finished paintings so you can compare the two. Included are a number of sketches from the "leather strap" series. This is an absolute must have for any Nestler fan or any fan of pinup or erotic art. Nester is simply the best!

5 out of 5 stars Great and funny little book........2006-07-10

I found this one at a little discount store, thought it was "Pat the Bunny" and figured I would pick it up because our oldest son destroyed his copy. I re-read the title and had no clue what I had in my hands. After reading it I was laughing out loud in the store and bout 4 of them (they were only a dollar) for myself, my class (I teach at a college), and my friends.

Hilarious parody, not obvious in its punch lines. Perfect, and perfectly scary.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed. I cried. It was better than "Cats"..........2003-12-07

Having read the original "Pat the Bunny" book to my 2-year-old countless times, and with an ever-shrinking pool of cash and ever-increasing debt, I found this book hilarious yet painfully true. I also laughed out loud in the bookstore (the guy standing next to me must have thought that I was certifiably insane), but did not actually buy the book due to aforementioned shrinking cash pool...so it will probably go on my Wish List. Recommended for a good laugh in these hard economic times (and just WHERE are those jobs, George W.?).

5 out of 5 stars A Hilarious and Scary Parody of Pat the Bunny.......2003-09-05

I cracked up in the bookstore when I first picked this one up. Being familiar with the interactive classic Pat the Bunny, I was drawn right into this one.

Simply put, it uses Pat the Bunny-style illustrations and rhymes to show the differences between two generations. One is monied and affluent while the new generation has much bleaker prospects (remember to give the money back after you pat it).

Everyone I have shown this too has laughed out loud. You probably will too. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for the downwardly mobile.......2003-06-23

If you or anyone you know (and who doesn't these days) has a growing debt load and a shrinking budget, then this is the perfect gift. Short and sweet, friends (even those without jobs) have laughed throughout. It's perfect for the times......

5 out of 5 stars Completely, subtly, perfectly hilarious.......2003-05-09

This will make you laugh out loud. It is the perfect shower gift for the parents who can still laugh their way through this economy.

      Book Description

Stacy Thompson's Punk Productions offers a concise history of punk music and combines concepts from Marxism to psychoanalysis to identify the shared desires that punk expresses through its material productions and social relations. Thompson explores all of the major punk scenes in detail, from the early days in New York and England, through California Hardcore and the Riot Grrrls, and thoroughly examines punk record collecting, the history of the Dischord and Lookout! record labels, and 'zines produced to chronicle the various scenes over the years. While most analyses of punk address it in terms of style, Thompson grounds its aesthetics, and particularly its most combative elements, in a materialist theory of punk economics situated within the broader fields of the music industry, the commodity form, and contemporary capitalism. While punk's ultimate goal of abolishing capitalism has not been met, the punk enterprise that stands opposed to the music industry is still flourishing. Punks continue to create aesthetics that cannot be readily commodified or rendered profitable by major record labels, and punks remain committed to transforming consumers into producers, in opposition to the global economy's increasingly rapid shift toward oligopoly and monopoly.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Textural Poaching Is A Crime.......2005-12-12

I think Stacy Thompson's perspective is a bit odd because she regards music as a commodity and not as a form of creative expression. She sees its aesthetic qualities as being wholly determined by economic factors and social forces. There is virtually no consideration given to the musician as a creative artist motivated by his or her muse. She does not understand that the artist's vision is what demands noncommercial forms of expression.

Instead of suggesting that punks were trying to live in historical time, as if they were aware of making cultural history, I would argue that they were trying to live the rock star fantasy. Punks were legends in their own minds. This is quite evident in the "oral histories" which consist of apocryphal stories rather than the objective and impartial facts that a genuine historian would record. I doubt that punk rock will ever be a part of history. Instead it will leave behind a few rock legends and a punk mythology.

Stacy Thompson's book may stir the most controversy with her suggestion that the California Hardcore scene was essentially homosocial in nature; secretly homoerotic but too homophobic to acknowledge the fact. It is true that the California Hardcore scene excluded girls entirely and that is another good reason for my distaste for hardcore punk because I like punk girls who show a lot of character. If there are no girls on the scene as freaky performers or fashionable fans then the scene has no appeal for me. The only psychoanalysis in the book takes the form of this homosocial theory but I find Jungian theories about the mythic imagination have more relevance for the sort of rock legends and hero cults the youth subcultures are intent on worshipping.

Nonetheless, I highly recommend this book as a reference guide to various punk scenes. It also addresses the crucial issue of a commercial culture which wants to domineer your imagination and repress your creative potential.

By saying the word "maze" I'm probably conjuring the image of those flat angles of black lines. This is NOT what you'll get if you buy this book. Mad Mazes is precisely that--each maze has a complex set of dynamic rules. One allows you only to turn right--unless you pass a certain point, after which you can only turn left. Another is three-dimensional, and you climb and descend levels in an effort to reach bottom. You actually have to (gasp) think. I first got this book 6-7 years ago and still haven't solved all the puzzles! (And there are only twenty, to my everlasting regret.) Each is accompanied with illustrations and a delightfully humorous story.

Steven Levy's classic book explains why the misuse of the word "hackers" to describe computer criminals does a terrible disservice to many important shapers of the digital revolution. Levy follows members of an MIT model railroad club--a group of brilliant budding electrical engineers and computer innovators--from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s. These eccentric characters used the term "hack" to describe a clever way of improving the electronic system that ran their massive railroad. And as they started designing clever ways to improve computer systems, "hack" moved over with them. These maverick characters were often fanatics who did not always restrict themselves to the letter of the law and who devoted themselves to what became known as "The Hacker Ethic." The book traces the history of hackers, from finagling access to clunky computer-card-punching machines to uncovering the inner secrets of what would become the Internet. This story of brilliant, eccentric, flawed, and often funny people devoted to their dream of a better world will appeal to a wide audience.

      Book Description

Today, technology is cool. Owning the most powerful computer, the latest high-tech gadget, and the whizziest web site is a status symbol on a par with having a flashy car or a designer suit. And a media obsessed with the digital explosion has reappropriated the term "computer nerd" so that it's practically synonymous with "entrepreneur." Yet, a mere fifteen years ago, wireheads hooked on tweaking endless lines of code were seen as marginal weirdos, outsiders whose world would never resonate with the mainstream. That was before one pioneering work documented the underground computer revolution that was about to change our world forever. With groundbreaking profiles of Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, MIT's tech Model Railroad Club, and more, Steven Levy's Hackers brilliantly captures a seminal moment when the risk takers and explorers were poised to conquer twentieth-century America's last great frontier. And in the Internet age, "the hacker ethic"--first espoused here--is alive an well.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An amazing insight into the mind of a computer enthusiast.......2007-06-22

Steven Levy has written a masterpiece, and I will be forever grateful to him for it. Although when I read it (circa year 2001) computers were much more mainstream than the period this book covers (1960s-80s), the book still broke new ground for me. It was before the blogging era, and especially before all the aspiring hackers of the world "united" via a network of blogs, forums, feeds, "planets" (feed collections on specific topics) and link accumulators like Reddit and Digg. In other words, it was much more difficult for me to find people with interests similar to mine.

Or maybe I didn't look hard enough. This is not the point, anyway. The point is that this book took me "out of the closet" as a hacker, proud of my hobby, instead of wondering whether I'm some kind of an autistic freak. Reading it, I understood two things of utmost importance:

      1. There were, and there are, many people with my interests and peculiarities. And these are the people that made the computer revolution happen.
      2. Somehow, Steven Levy managed to explain in words the reason people find computers and programming so fascinating. In some sense it was a revelation. I kept saying to myself "yes, exactly!" and "ahh, now I understand" very frequently while reading the book.

Here are a couple of great quotes from the book regarding (2):

" What kept him going was his fascination with the machine, how it let you build complicated systems completely under your control."

I heard people referring to this as instant gratification. Engineering is fun, solving problems is fun, and building solutions is fun - this probably has strong roots in the ancestral humans, shaped by evolution to be smarter than other animals. As opposed to other, more "physical" disciplines of engineering, like electrical, mechanical or structural engineering, programming allows you to actually create real and useful things with a computer as your only tool. An electrical engineer may wait for a long time until his board will be produced, and only then he can "play with it". For a computer programmer, things are much simpler. It is very easy and quick to build systems and use them.

" [...] computers were an infinitely flexible artistic medium, one in which you could express yourself by creating your own little universe."

"Code is art" is a very popular notion these days, perhaps coined by Knuth in his "The Art of Computer Programming" books. People do art for fun - they draw, play and compose music, write and design pretty gardens. In this sense, programming is not much different - it is an act of creation and self-expression. It is fun.

As I said, this book is a treasure chest of insightful quotes like the ones above. Levy interviewed most of the who-and-whos in the world of computing from the 1960s in the MIT labs and through the 1980s in the Californian game development companies. In addition to being explanatory of the "hacker nature", the book is also a great historical reference for the early years of computing. How lucky we are these days to have the opportunity to hack so easily. Just a few decades ago, people interested in computers had to use clanky, slow, terminals or worse, batch-processing machines. There are so much free open-source development tools one really doesn't need to spend money on anything further than the hardware - and PCs are cheap and powerful.

I can't recommend this book enough to anyone interested in computing, and programming in particular. As an aid to discovering your internal motivations, you own yourself to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Oh, what might have been..........2007-06-14

SL does a fine job of charting the early history of hacking at MIT and Stanford and beyond. As a member of the 3rd-generation-of-hackers generation (though, regretfully, not a hacker myself), I remember well the first personal computers and computer game systems, and the passion of friends and classmates of mine who were among the first to own and cut their programming teeth on them. It's amazing to think how far computers have come in my lifetime, a true technological revolution. SL's book reminds us not only how very near the beginnings of personal computing history we are, but how very far we've drifted from the intellectual and social ideals that marked those beginnings. What a shame that the Hacker utopias Levy describes are no more, and that computers and computing, today, are so enchained to commerce (granted that there are of course many extraordinary applications of computer technology, today, and many more to expect in the future, as well). I can only imagine how disappointed the Greenblatts, Nelsons, Felsensteins, etc., of yesteryear must be. The passing of the Hacker age -- if, indeed, it has passed -- is no less than the passing of a culture, as Richard ("last of the Hackers") Stallman laments. Reading Hackers, especially the opening chapters about the MIT AI-lab hacking community, I found myself wishing that I, too, had been 'present at the creation' and blessed with enormous hacking talent. SL's book is a long trip down many others' very pleasant -- in equal parts exciting and frustrating -- memory lane. As later chapters explore the computer gaming scene, and subsequent generations of hackerism, the subject-matter of Hackers becomes less compelling, and the writing a bit tiresome. I could, for instance, have done without SL's incessant harping on the social akwardnesses and missed sexual gambits of the gamers he profiles, material that reads sophomorically in the extreme. This aside, Hackers is an entertaining and informative piece of sociological journalism. FYI, "Artificial Life", by the same author, is a far better written first-rate piece of science journalism. Hackers is a could-read; Artificial Life is a should-read.

5 out of 5 stars Great book but be advised of some things:.......2007-05-13

I liked very much this Book. It's a very "Novelistic" way to tell the History of the "True Hackers" of the 60's, 70's and 80's. The words are on "Big Fonts" so you can read them without hurting your eyes.

Just please de advised of the following:

This book is almost 17 years old. It is not like "Master of Doom" that covers the beginning of a company until the new millenium era. For instace, I bought this copy because I am very interested in the history of Sierra On-line. Few books (on not any) covers the beginning of Ken and Roberta Williams. The thing is that, it is the VERY FIRST BEGINNING, really. It doesn't even focus on the Sierra Games. It tells more the entire Economical and Management backgroud of how Ken (and his staff) made their way to the top of ATARI and Apple with the games provided for them.

It is a very pleasure reading. But I think the big WOW on this book is the Sierra On-Line history. If you want to know more for example about the other hackers mentioned on this book, like Bill Gates or Stephen Woz but in depth, I recommend their own respective Biographies.

2 out of 5 stars This book could have been much more..........2007-01-27

I was disappointed with this book: it glossed over many parts of modern computing history to focus on the odd-balls, the unpleasant and the just plain nerdy. The focus appeared to be on MIT SAIL and the early game coding shops. One could be forgiven, if on reading this volume, for believing that micro-computing only happened in the USA on the West Coast.
The definitive hacker/PC history is yet to be written...

5 out of 5 stars Everyone gives this book 5 stars for a reason.......2007-01-14

It may be a bit redundant to write another review when everyone who crosses this book will fall in love. I sent a copy to my uncle, and passed it on to friends after reading it. Anyone fascinated with the computer revolution or even just fascinated with a story of social revolution in general, this book is a must read. Entertaining from the first page with thorough research and investigation by Levy.

By the way, hacking does not mean breaking into something or damaging it. It was used originally to describe a computer function distilled down to the least amount of lines of code. Because the original computers were so small in brain-power, minimum lines of code meant a lot less computation time, and that was considered "a good hack". But I don't want to spoil the book....

The personalities involved are endearing and memorable. Although I do have to say, I thought the first half of the book is more enjoyable which starts out with the wiz's at the MIT model rail club, who hack international phone calls and Chinese menus in Chinatown- as well as hack any and everything of interest.

p.s. you'll also learn why Bill Gates is so mistrusted by computer geeks. He basically took free information and found a way to make it less liquid and sellable.

                Book Description

                A handy English-language information resource
Whether you are interested in the first unification of the Germanic states in 1871, the present-day reunified Germany, the Weimar Republic, or the third Reich, here is the first English-language quick-reference guide on this major European power. The Encyclopedia covers every major aspect of German culture and society for the past century. Its broad spectrum of information is presented in entries that range from essays to brief paragraphs and encompass subjects from Konrad Adenauer to Helene Weber, from zoological gardens to aeronautics, from poetry to policing, and much more.

                Covers the post-Berlin wall era
The majority of the articles not only provide a historical background, but also bring their subjects into the post-Berlin Wall era, surveying such components of the German political system as federalism, the office of the Chancellor, and political parties. The Encyclopedia also features articles on the demise of the GermanDemocratic Republic and the subsequent reunification of the two postwar German states. It analyzes the political relationship between Germany and the other European powers, Germany's membership in the European community, its relations with the United States and many other contemporary political concerns. Clearly, the Encyclopedia is an excellent source of information for students and a refresher and bibliography resource for specialists.

                    Book Description

A pioneer in women's studies and long-term activist for women's issues, and a past president of the Organization of American Historians, Gerda Lerner is one of the founders and foremost scholars of Women's History. The Creation of Patriarchy, the first book in her two-volume magnum opus Women and History (1986) received wide review attention and much acclaim, winning the prestigious Joan Kelly Prize of the American Historical Association for the best work on Women's History that year. Ms hailed the book for providing "a grand historical framework that was impossible even to imagine before the enlightenment about women's place in the world provided by her earlier work and that of other feminist scholars." New Directions for Women said it "may well be the most important work in feminist theory to appear in our generation." Patriarchy traced the development of the ideas, symbols, and metaphors by which men institutionalized their domination of women. Now, in The Creation of Feminist Consciousness, the eagerly awaited concluding volume of Women and History, Lerner documents the twelve-hundred-year struggle of women to free their minds from patriarchal thought, to create Women's History, and to achieve a feminist consciousness. In a richly documented narrative filled with inspiring portraits of women, Lerner ranges from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century, tracing several important ways by which women strove for autonomy and equality. One of the most remarkable sections examines over twelve hundred years of feminist Bible criticism. Since objections to women's thinking, teaching, and speaking in public were based on biblical authority--most notably, passages from Genesis and the writings of St. Paul--women returned again and again to these texts, in an attempt to subvert patriarchal dominance and establish their equality with men. This survey of biblical criticism allows Lerner to illustrate her most important insight--the discontinuity of women's history. She describes how women's history was not passed on from generation to generation, forcing women in effect to reinvent the wheel over and over again. In a series of fascinating portraits of individual women who resisted patriarchal indoctrination, Lerner discusses women mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich and later Protestant mystics, and brings to life the many women of great literary talent, from Christine de Pisan to Louise Labe to Emily Dickinson, who simply bypassed patriarchal thought and created alternate worlds for themselves. Documenting the 1,200 year struggle of women to free their minds from patriarchal thought, create a women's history, and achieve a feminist consciousness, this brilliant work charts new ground for feminist theory, the history of ideas, and the development of women's place in our intellectual tradition.
