A book of encouragement........2003-10-03
Some of the other reviewers of this book need to get a life. This is a great little gift book for people who need encouragement.
More than a bit of bias ..........2002-04-03
Not only does Krause have people he know writing positive reviews, but he has also spammed the parenting boards on AOL with ads touting his own book ... but he doesn't indicate in the ads that he's shilling for HIMSELF!
Inspirational!.......2002-03-30
A must read for teenagers and adults. Encouragment for teenagers and adults alike! A great gift book I will save for my children.
A little biased don't you think?.......2001-11-22
Chelsea from "Texas" is a student in one of Tom Krause's classes. A little biased don't you think? Personally I didn't like the book at all. Way too many sappy, made-up stories. But if that's your thing, go for it.
Review on this great book........2001-11-17
Tom Krause is an excellent author. You can read this book in any kind of a mood. If you are in a bad mood, it lifts your spirts. It has many great tales that teach many life lessons. You should defentily buy this great book.

Book Description
Translation and film adaptation of theatre have received little study. In filling that gap, this book draws on the experiences of theatrical translators and on movie versions of plays from various countries. It also offers insights into such concerns as the translation of bilingual plays and the choice between subtitling and dubbing of film.
Book Description
On Our Own offers a comprehensive narrative history of American society, culture, politics, and institutions during this remarkable decade. The volume includes the Kennedy administration, the civil-rights revolution, the Great Society, the Vietnam War, and the Movement, and then concludes with three chapters that discuss the decade's aftermath and its legacies: the conservative counterrevolution of the Nixon era, the co-opting of the Movement, and the feminist and environmentalist movements that grew out of the 1960s.

Book Description
Most of Jim Corbett's books contain collections of stories that recount adventures tracking and shooting man-eaters in the Indian Himalaya. This volume, however, consists of a single story, often considered the most exciting of all Corbett's jungle tales. He gives a carefully-detailed
account of a notorious leopard that terrorized life in the hills of the colonial United Provinces. This story represents Corbett's most sustained and unique effort.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2005-09-21
If you like adventure literature, you should find this piece really wonderful. I read it while I was alone at home for a week and I started to "feel" leopards all aronud the house at night. Very well writen, hard to stop reading.
Adventures dont get better than this........2005-02-16
Corbett is a natural writer and combines his knowledge of the jungle with uncanny hunting skills to give us one of the best Indian adventures ever written.
Reading his books is not just following a maneater with a gun - it is a journey into the days of the British Raj where you will be transported into the remote jungles of Northern India, read about the simple people and their unsophisticated lifestyle. There are no villians, no suspicious characters lurking around and nobody to provide humour. You just have village folk trying to eke out a living which is sometimes interrupted by a feline with a taste for humans.
This particular book is about one leopard which terrorised a large region for many years and claimed about 420 lives. To understand what these people must have felt, it must be noted that in those days there were no high security fences, no guns or any kind of technology to track the leopard. Yet the people had to enter the forest to earn their daily bread. There is an unforgettable chapter in the book titled 'Terror' which starts something like this:
'During the day, people went about their lives as usual. Trade and commerce, transport and all other transactions went about their normal way. But as evening approached, there was a marked change in their behaviour. Pilgrims rushed towards their night shelters, businessmen closed shops abruptly and people scurried towards their homes for relative safety. No curfew was more strictly imposed. No orders to remain indoors were observed as faithfully.'
This is one of the books which shows that for writing adventure you don't need weapons or FBI investigations. All you need is a writer with a big heart who loves what he is doing and knows what he is talking about.
Corbett Classic.......2004-05-09
Another excellent book from the corbett library. Its true that fact can be stranger than fiction. And no where is it more evident than in the story of the maneater of rudraprayag.
Corbett is out to kill this very clever and wily old leopard in the second half of the 1920's. The leopard is believed to have made its debut as a man-killer following the influenze outbreak of 1918. Corbett hunts this killer over two years. In an intense battle of nerves between the best shikari that ever was and the wily leopardus, corbett's life hangs by a thread many times. On one dark stormy night, robbed of his defenses, he makes his way back to the village after a failed attempt in an experience that he terms his scariest. Another time the leopard snatches a goat right under his nose and gives him a run for his money! All and many illustrations of man's utter helplessness when a clever maneater turns against him.
In the end, corbett suceeds in putting a bullet where it truly belongs - in the maneater - to end its career. In true corbett fashion he has a soft spot for the old dead leopard, which gave him such a sporty fight. I am sure they both met again in the happy hunting grounds!
A wonderful book by a wonderful man.
This book is available from Oxford Univ. Press website.......2003-12-09
This book is available from the Oxford University Press website: http://www.oup.com/
I just purchased a new copy for 12.49 British pounds including shipping to the USA which is just over $21 USD (December, 2003) I don't know why the new/used books advertised on Amazon by private sellers are so expensive.
If it's anything like Corbett's "Man-eaters of Kumaon" it is a masterpiece.
The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag.......2001-07-30
An extraordinarily insightful, gripping and vivid description of what life must have been like when people were at the mercy of a maneater. As in all his books, Corbett showed a gift for writing his memoirs. They are thrilling in their matter-of-fact, understated way. His knowledge and love of the Indian people, the jungle and its animals was unusual for a white man of his era. I don't know of another who put it in writing so well. That his books are not widely read by kids anymore is very sad. Corbett's fine character and sensitivity are a lesson to us all and to boys in particular.
Book Description
Three Mile Island burst into the nation's headlines twenty-five years ago, forever changing our view of nuclear power. The dramatic accident held the world's attention for an unsettling week in March 1979 as engineers struggled to understand what had happened and to bring the damaged reactor to a safe condition. Much has been written since then about TMI, but it is not easy to find up-to-date information that is both reliable and accessible to the non-scientific reader. TMI offers a much needed "one-stop" resource for a new generation of citizens, students, and policy makers.
The legacy of Three Mile Island has been far reaching. The worst nuclear accident in U.S. history marked a turning point in our policies, our perceptions, and our national identity. Those involved in the nuclear industry today study the scenario carefully and review the decontamination and recovery process. Risk management and the ability to rationally and understandably convey risks to the general population are an integral part of implementation of new technologies. Political, environmental, and energy decisions have been made with TMI as a factor, and while studies reveal little environmental damage from the accident, long term studies of health effects continue. TMI presents a balanced and factual account of the accident, the cleanup effort, and the many facets of its legacy twenty-five years later.
The authors bring extensive research and writing experience to this book. After the accident and the cleanup, a significant collection of videotapes, photographs, and reports were donated to the University Libraries at Penn State University. Bonnie Osif and Thomas Conkling are engineering librarians at Penn State who maintain a database of these materials, which they have made available to the general public through an award-winning website. Anthony Baratta is a nuclear engineer who worked with the decontamination and recovery project at TMI and is an expert in nuclear accidents. The book features unique photographs of the cleanup and helpful appendixes that enable readers to further investigate various aspects of the story.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Overview Of The Long-Term Effects Of TMI.......2005-06-13
I have read extensively on the Three Mile Island accident and believe that this book is probably the best introduction to the accident I have yet seen. The book is accurate and is scrupulously unbiased, which is a rarity in any book dealing with nuclear power. The first 32 pages of the book provide the best and most concise general overview of the accident I have read, and anyone wanting to understand the accident should start here.
The book is accessible to non-specialists, but does not make inaccurate generalizations simply for ease of explanation. There is information presented on the basic concepts of nuclear energy, which makes the book extremely valuable to someone just beginning to read on the issue. More knowledgeable readers, industry professionals, and policymakers benefit from this book as well, as it has chapters on the health effects of the accident (including recent data on ongoing longitudinal studies), environmental effects of the accident, policy effects of the accidents, and perhaps most usefully, excellent appendices which include a useful glossary, an accident timeline, and a list of common misconceptions about the TMI accident.
The authors have done an admirable job of writing a book that is useful to both professionals and the general public. It is extremely well documented, non-political, unbiased, and scrupulously accurate. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in nuclear power.
Excellent Information In An Easy-To-Read Format.......2005-01-03
"Objective knowledge will help provide guidance for the decisions that will need to be made as we go forward into the next quarter-century." So ends the book TMI 25 Years Later, an objective, inclusive compilation of information regarding the March 28, 1979 Loss-of-Coolant Accident in Reactor 2 of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant near Middletown, PA.
The book, written by three Penn State University staffers, offers a balanced, condensed history of the events of the accident and the years of follow-up that have occurred. Sections cover all aspects of the accident, including rather extensive review and analysis of the role played by the media in the event. Other topics covered include short- and long-term physical and psychological health effects, industry regulatory and financial impacts, and environmental consequences, along with current and future power requirements in the United States and the options for meeting those requirements.
In order to properly understand exactly what caused the accident and what it's effects meant to the local population, a rudimentary understanding of nuclear processes and power generation are needed. Complex nuclear concepts are presented in an illustrated, easy-to-understand manner, and an in-depth minute-by-minute timeline of the accident is presented along with causes, effects, and notes that only the luxury of extensive investigation and hind-sight can provide.
An excellent book for anyone interested in nuclear power generation, the TMI accident or the local populace of the plant, TMI 25 Years Later provides condensed information in an easy-to-read format. The information is not watered down (the book is well cited), but instead provided in a format that allows anyone to understand what happened on that fateful Wednesday morning, and more importantly what it means to our future.

Book Description
The period between 1500 and 1650 was an exceptional time in history in that many European states and kingdoms were ruled by women. From Elizabeth I to Catherine de Medici, and from Anne of Austria to Mary, Queen of Scots, this phenomenon of female rule gave new energy to the long-standing controversy about the ability of women to govern, and reflected larger issues regarding the role of women in society.
Women Who Ruled is a fascinating exploration of how female power was visualized and constructed in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Examining over 90 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, and decorative-arts pieces, the book provides a social, political, historical, mythological, and erotic context for (mainly) men's constructions of women's identities, and offers a striking parallel with today's mass-media manipulation of the female image, especially as women are increasingly taking the reins of power.
Examining female archetypes such as The Virgin, Wives and Mothers, Seductresses, The Warrior Woman, The Heroine, and The Goddess, author Annette Dixon deconstructs famous works such as Nicholas Hilliard's Elizabeth I: The "Hardwick" Portrait, Rubens's Joan of Arc, and Artemisia Gentileschi's Lot and his Daughters to show how these images created and reflected the age's idealization of women.
At a time when courses on gender studies and cultural theory are at their most popular, Women Who Ruled is a timely, intelligent, and stunningly illustrated book that offers a significant contribution to both women's studies and art history.
Customer Reviews:
Great Viewing.......2005-11-13
I bought this book at a gallery bookshop, and took it home wondering if I would like it.
It is now one of my favorite volumes. The illustrations are gorgeous - they are produced so finely, and range from paintings to prints and all other decorative arts.
I find the essays very informative. They explain the symbolism, etc. The text of the book is not too long - much space is given to the illustrations, which is appropriate.
Poorly written and conceived text, no insight.......2003-02-21
I have to agree with the other reviews of "Women Who Ruled". I visited the exhibition here at the University of Michigan last spring and enjoyed the exhibition, so I purchased the book hoping to gain some insight from the curator. Unfortunately, Annette Dixon, the curator at UM, seems to rely too heavily on other texts as the basis for her writing. There is not much in the way of personal opinion derived from first hand observation of the artwork itself. Much of the iconography,of which I would have enjoyed having some analysis, was completely ignored. What I got in it's place was watered down, cloyingly academic essays that took no positions, offered no opinions, and sat on the proverbial fence.
Fortunately there is an essay by Mieke Bal. From her writing, I can tell that at least she has strong opinions and is not afraid to voice them. It is too bad she did not write the whole text, instead of Dr. Dixon.
Overall it is a staid, stale, intellectually unadventerous exercise. The University of Michigan should be ashamed by putting out such a poorly conceived and written book. I hope they will learn from their mistakes and publish texts that are better companions to their exhibitions.
pandering and full of stereotypes.......2003-02-14
In "Women Who Ruled: Queens, Goddesses, Amazons in Renaissance and Baroque Art" it as if I were seeing Rashoman without ever getting to the final viewpoint that ties it all together and actually gives the woman's version of events. There is no continuity of thought or purpose. The writing is, for the most part, very conservative and relies on pigeonholing women into the usual stereotypical roles, virgin, whore, mother, etc. The ideas put forward of power being of the utmost importance, calls into question the authors priorities. Perhaps they are simply pandering to an audience, giving them what they want to hear. All power is not positive, neither are all powerful women.
Overall it was an unpleasant experience to read this book. The authors use the sort of language that speaks to academia and no one else. It fails to engage the reader throughout and then abruptly ends. It is a convoluted text with little relevance.
Pick up Art and Feminism by Helena Reckitt and Peggy Phelan instead.
Coffee table book - a must-not read.......2003-02-07
I had high hopes for this book but the writing is deplorable. Granted the illustrations are nice, but the essays, Ms. Dixon's in particular cycle over the same material again and again and never lead to any conclusions or opinions. It is if it was written by committee and total number of words was more important than content. There is no personal voice, no direction, no apparent humanity. Most of the useable content here is available elsewhere, and better written, more concise, and more thought through. At the end you are left knowing less than when you started. Save your time!

The New Transnational Activism (Cambridge Studies in Contentious Politics)
ASIN: 0262693356 |
Book Description
Globalization and the changing role of the nation-state call for new approaches to environmental governance and new ways to conceptualize it. Recent developments in sociology--seen in the work of John Urry, Manuel Castells, and others--show how social theory can be made less static, more fluid, and more directed toward flow and networks in order to encompass today's reality. Governing Environmental Flows explores what such a reformulation means for the environmental social sciences. Taking the term environmental flows--in both its traditional scientific sense and in a newer social dimension--as its key unit of analysis, the book focuses on the interrelationships of globalization, the environment, and the state. The consensus of the contributors is that the conventional nation-state-based approach to environmental policy is in need of revision; the goal of the book is to lay the foundations for a set of concepts capable of analyzing environmental governance in global modernity.
The first part of the book takes a theoretical perspective on how to interpret and conceptualize problems of governance and material flows. Case studies follow, examining biodiversity policies, transnational governance of climate-change-related water risks, globalized food production and consumption, "green" urban office buildings owned by global corporations, and transport flows in everyday life. Using the flow and network conceptual framework, these case studies illuminate the new dynamics of environmental policymaking in the twenty-first century.
