      Book Description

Rugrats has proven to be an anomaly in the world of children's television programming. Never intended to consist of more than 65 episodes, the show was still terrifically popular three years after the last new episode had aired. Its unprecedented status with viewers led Nickelodeon to reverse its policy of a 65-episode limit per series. The children's cable network resumed production of new Rugrats episodes in 1997 after a three-year hiatus. The Rugrats comic strip emerged the following year. Like the TV show, the strip features humor playing simultaneously on two different levels: one for young children, and another for teens and adults. Rugrats: A Baby's Work Is Never Done is the first in a series of Rugrats comic strip collections.

      Book Description

"Midlife -- it's a four-letter word...if you're a really bad speller. But it's also extremely funny if you look at it right...or if you sleep through as much of it as possible." -- from Journal of a Midlife Crisis. On January 1st, Christee Gabour Atwood, a forty-something author, comidienne, and animal lover resolved to write daily in her journal. And she kept her promise, faithfully recording her journey into something terrifying, something taboo: Midlife. Overcoming the indignity of being called "Ma'am" by a strapping college boy, smiling bravely through conversations with matrons aghast that she and her husband never particularly cared to have children ("I'm allergic," she tells one horrified dinner guest), and enduring the first appearance of wrinkles, Atwood hillariously comments on all the reasons to have a midlife crisis, and why to cherish every moment of a life well-lived. Witty, sharp, and unflinchingly honest, Journal of a Midlife Crisis is more clever than Dr. Laura, more fun than Dr. Phil, and more real than Bridget Jones.

Not the most intellectually stimulating book out there, but I suppose that wasn't its intention! A very fun diary of a woman's midlife crisis. Equally funny and relatable, it was great fun to read. I couldn't put it down until the very end! This is a gem by Atwood and I recommend it as a quick read to middle-aged ladies with a good sense of humor. Definitely worth the small amount of money for a lot of smiles.

As a devoted fan, it's been difficult for me to accept the breakup of Simon & Garfunkel after all these years. Sure, you can go see their solo concerts every now and then, but it's never the same. Thanks to Joe Morella's detailed explanations on what was actually happening between the two singers, I can now understand and accept what eventually had to happen, no matter how painful. It was particularly heartbreaking to learn that their relationship was such that Simon destroyed the sound track of Garfunkel's voice when they were initially producing "Hearts and Bones" as duo album. That's important to me as I still expect to live several more decades. Talking in the same vain, The Beatles Anthology (the book) served a similar purpose, as far as I'm concerned. I can now live with less frustrations.

3 out of 5 stars Simon And Gafunkel Book An Interesting But Out Of Date Read.......2001-04-29

A harrowing and often poignant recount of the trials and trivulations of the Simon and Garfunkel team. Chronicling everything from their days in Queens as the teenaged duo Tom and Jerry, to their triumphant reunion concert at Central park, this book is truly a dedicated fan's guidebook. Although the stories were cleaned up quite a bit and it is a little out of date, (it leaves off at Paul Simon's 1986 album 'Graceland') the book's stories are relatively honest accounts of Simon and Garfunkel's careers. Although, I'm not a huge fan of the group's work, I found this book to be an informative and interesting read.

          Book Description

New Historicism and Cultural Materialism have become two of the most powerful and appealing movements in modern criticism. Their conquest of Renaissance studies has escalated into global colonization of English and American literary history. A wealth of innovative work has emerged on everything from the "Canterbury Tales" to the "Cantos," bringing intense theoretical controversy in its wake. This Reader pulls the diversity and polemical vigor of this new critical constellation into focus for the first time.

              4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-09-23

This is by far the best book on omaha high. However, it contains minimal information on omaha hi/lo. While the text is really short, hence I'm only giving it 4 stars, it contains many of the basics that are essential to be a great omaha player. If you are a PLO or omaha hi player and you only want to pick up one book this would be the one I'd recommend.

3 out of 5 stars Too short but worth reading.......2003-12-19

Sure, it'd be nice if this was a longer book but it still gives some solid Omaha advice and I think it's worth the money given the lack of other good Omaha books out there. It would be nice if this was as good as Ciaffone's other books but it's certainly no stinker.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Chips.......2002-10-10

I was looking forward to this book on Omaha Holdem for several reasons: a) there are very few books on the game available and b) Bob Ciaffone has written some good books on other forms of poker. But this book gets a thumbs down and here's why:

              1) It's way too short at just 106 pages. That just isn't room to even begin to go into Omaha Holdem.

              2) There's very little information here: Page one is devoted to the "Popularity of the Game." Page two "The Rules". Page 3 "The Showdown." Pages 4-5 "Origin of Omaha." Pages 6-8 are about community card poker. Pages 9-13 are about betting and the blind structure. Page 14-15 are about learning to read the board in Omaha (you must use 2 cards from yourhand and 3 from the board). Pages 16-18 are about "Should you learn Omaha?". Pages 19-23 are about comparing Omaha and Texas holdem. And remember, this book is only 106 pages long so there's no much left for actual strategy.

              3) Pages 91-97 are about tournaments.
              4) pages 98-101 are about "Future Ideas for Omaha".

I simply found that there was barely enough information to even get started. For some reason this book is shorter than any of Ciaffone's other books even though Pot Limit Omaha
"represents the ideal form of poker" to the author. I wish there were more information here but there simply isn't. Buyer beware, this book is short, not in-depth, and will provide only the very basics of beginning Omaha.

Biology, it seems, is a good showcase for the talents of Perl. Newcomers to Perl who understand biological information will find James Tisdall's Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics to be an excellent compendium of examples. Teachers of Perl will likewise find the text to be filled with fresh programming illustrations of growing scientific importance. Seasoned Perlmongers who want to learn biology, however, should search elsewhere, as Tisdall's emphasis is on Perl's logic rather than Mother Nature's.

Departing from O'Reilly's earlier monograph Developing Bioinformatic Computer Skills, Tisdall's text is organized aggressively along didactic lines. Nearly all of the 13 chapters begin with twin bullet lists of Perl programming tools and the bioinformatic methods that require them. Likewise, the chapters end with exercises. String concatenation is illustrated with gene splicing, and regular expressions are taught with gene transcription and motif searching.

Tisdall emphasizes sequence examples throughout, leading up to an introduction to a Perl interface for the NIH GenBank biological database and the widely used BLAST sequence alignment tool. After a brief discussion of three-dimensional protein structure, he returns to sequence extraction and secondary structure prediction.

Tisdall's goal is to boost the beginning programmer into a domain of self-learning. He imparts essential etiquette for the success of programming newbies: use the wealth or resources available, from user documentation to Web site surveys to FAQs to How-To's to news groups and finally to direct personal appeals for help from a senior colleague. A well-plugged-in bioinformatics Perl student will soon discover Bioperl, an open-source effort to bring research-grade bioinformatic tools to the Perl community. Bioperl is described briefly at the end of Tisdall's book and will reportedly be a forthcoming title of its own in the O'Reilly bioinformatics series.

Although he introduces bioinformatics as an academic discipline, Tisdall treats it as a trade throughout his book. He indicates that open questions and computational hard problems exist, but does not describe what they are or how they are being tackled. Ultimately, Tisdall presents bioinformatics as another arrow in a bench scientist's quiver, very much like HPLC, 2D-PAGE, and the various spectroscopies.

As odd as a "bioinformatics-as-tool" book may be to its research proponents, the reduction of bioinformatics to trade status both deflates and vindicates the years of research, as Tisdall's work attests. --Peter Leopold

                Book Description

With its highly developed capacity to detect patterns in data, Perl has become one of the most popular languages for biological data analysis. But if you're a biologist with little or no programming experience, starting out in Perl can be a challenge. Many biologists have a difficult time learning how to apply the language to bioinformatics. The most popular Perl programming books are often too theoretical and too focused on computer science for a non-programming biologist who needs to solve very specific problems. Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics is designed to get you quickly over the Perl language barrier by approaching programming as an important new laboratory skill, revealing Perl programs and techniques that are immediately useful in the lab. Each chapter focuses on solving a particular bioinformatics problem or class of problems, starting with the simplest and increasing in complexity as the book progresses. Each chapter includes programming exercises and teaches bioinformatics by showing and modifying programs that deal with various kinds of practical biological problems. By the end of the book you'll have a solid understanding of Perl basics, a collection of programs for such tasks as parsing BLAST and GenBank, and the skills to take on more advanced bioinformatics programming. Some of the later chapters focus in greater detail on specific bioinformatics topics. This book is suitable for use as a classroom textbook, for self-study, and as a reference. The book covers:

Although this book was written for biologists with no previous programming experience who have decided they need to learn to program in PERL, it is also useful for programmers entering the field of bioinformatics who need to learn the language. However, you should have some background in biology or else you'll be lost as to the purpose of the examples. That's because almost all of the examples and exercises are based on real biological problems, and this book will give you a good introduction to the most common bioinformatics programming problems and the most common computer-based biological data. This book is over five years old, but it still stands alone in that what it does it does better than any other book I've run across. The follow-on to this book is "Mastering Perl for Bioinformatics", and I recommend that book for both CS and biologist types that want to get into the more advanced parts of PERL and yet stay in the realm of learning the language via real biological problems. The following is a short run down of each chapter:

                1. Biology and Computer Science - Covers some key concepts in molecular biology, as well as how biology and computer science fit together.

                2. Getting Started with Perl - Shows you how to get Perl running on your computer and also talks about Perl's benefits.

                3. The Art of Programming - Provides an overview as to how programmers accomplish their jobs. Some of the most important practical strategies good programmers use are explained, and where to find answers to questions that arise while you are programming is carefully laid out. These ideas are made concrete by brief narrative case studies that show how programmers, given a problem, find its solution.

                4. Sequences and Strings - You start writing Perl programs with DNA and proteins. The programs transcribe DNA to RNA, concatenate sequences, make the reverse complement of DNA, and read sequence data from files. This is the first chapter to conclude with exercises.

                5. Motifs and Loops - Continues demonstrating the basics of the Perl language with programs that search for motifs in DNA or protein, interact with users at the keyboard, write data to files, use loops and conditional tests, use regular expressions, and operate on strings and arrays.

                6. Subroutines and Bugs -Extends the basic knowledge of Perl in two main directions: subroutines, which are an important way to structure programs, and the use of the Perl debugger, which can examine in detail a running Perl program.

                7. Mutations and Randomizations - Genetic mutations, fundamental to biology, are modelled as random events using the random number generator in Perl. This chapter uses random numbers to generate DNA sequence data sets, and to repeatedly mutate DNA sequence. Loops, subroutines, and lexical scoping are also discussed.

                8. The Genetic Code - How to translate DNA to proteins, using the genetic code. It also covers a good bit more of the Perl programming language, such as the hash data type, sorted and unsorted arrays, binary search, relational databases, and DBM, and how to handle FASTA formatted sequence data.

                9. Restriction Maps and Regular Expressions - An introduction to Perl regular expressions. The main focus of the chapter is the development of a program to calculate a restriction map for a DNA sequence.

                10. GenBank - The Genetic Sequence Data Bank (GenBank) is central to modern biology and bioinformatics. In this chapter, you learn how to write programs to extract information from GenBank files and libraries. You will also make a database to create your own rapid access lookups on a GenBank library.

                11. Protein Data Bank - Develops a program that can parse Protein Data Bank (PDB) files. Some interesting Perl techniques are encountered while doing so, such as finding and iterating over lots of files and controlling other bioinformatics programs from a Perl program.

                12. BLAST - Develops some code to parse a BLAST output file. Also mentioned are the Bioperl project and its BLAST parser, and some additional ways to format output in Perl.

                13. Further Topics - Looks at topics beyond the scope of this book. These topics include sequence alignment methods like the Smith-Waterman algorithm and microarray techniques that enable the measurement of the relative levels of thousands of gene transcripts at a time. These topics are only briefly mentioned, and you are shown places outside of the book to get further information.

Appendix A - Resources for Perl and for bioinformatics programming, such as books and Internet sites.

Appendix B - Summary of those parts of the Perl language that will be most useful as you read this book.

For the students of molecular biology and genetics, and also other bioinformatics-related departments, this book is an above-average supply to study Perl.

5 out of 5 stars Mostly for the Biologist.......2006-09-20

People come to Bioinformatics from either the bio side or the CS side, with a few from various other disciplines. This book is best for the bio person who is getting into programming, not the programmer who is getting into bio.

For you CS types, I attended a tutorial by Tisdall on this material some years ago. One of the attendees asked why you needed an editor to code in Perl. That is the level that we are dealing with here!

It is a crime that biology and biochem students are not taught any perl- this is a very useful tool that will be more important as time goes on.

Perhaps someone could write a book on bioinformatics Perl for programmers someday, but that is not the goal of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beginning Perl for BioInformatics.......2006-01-17

Excellent book. The perl programming language is the most versitile and powerful software tool available today. This book was written for Biologists to learn this incredible programming language. Examples are pulled from real problems Biologists face and explained in terms they can understand. The book is clearly written.

                5 out of 5 stars excellent introduction..........2005-12-31

i find this book is an excellent intoudction for one of the most intersting topic..The book is so easy to read if you know the elementary of molecular biology and begining introudction about perl. I do recommed this book to start with if you interested about programming for bioinformatics. You will be able to build simple bioinformatics programmes after reading this book as well as you will be able to understand easily how the commerically avaliable bioinformatics programs are working.

                    2 out of 5 stars very British.......2006-10-12

This book contains many facts, and many, many of the author's opinions. The portion of the book which deals with WWII gives one the impression that the British received very little help from the USAAC in defeating the Axis. He expresses negative opinions repeatedly about the design, quality, tactics, etc. of the American aircraft. What was he smoking????

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Summary if not a little Allied biased.......2006-03-17

This is an excellent overall summary of major air battles throughout the20th Century. The major issue I had was with the opnions expressed concerning fighter superiority beng a little biases toward Western aircraft. Notably the Me-109 / Spitfire and F-15 vs. Su0-27/Mig 29. I think that it is now clear that the 109E was superior to the Spitfire when flown by equally competent pilots during 1940-19442 period. There were altitude restrictions and certainly aircraft envelope limits, but when flown to those limits it was clear the 109E was the better overall airplane and would result in more kills in more occasions.

The F-15 / Soviet issue was always masked by the differences in pilot training and electronics suites. In a guns encounter, both Soviet fighters are probably more than a match for the Eagle driver if flown by a pilot with appropriate training levels, something difficult to find in the heyday of the USSR and certainly not available today.

The book is full of drawing and diagrams detailign different paint schemes and squadron markings for both Allied and opposition aircraft. The colors are as close to being accurate as can be in modern priniting, given the broad nature of the subjects involved. Thumbnail descriptions of the battles help orient the reader in time and space, and the author is one of the few whom I have seen break up the Battle of Britain in the several segements, most were described as being separately elements of the Battle by Adolf Galland in his writings. This gives the reader the understanding of what it was like during that time.

Both 'Mig Alley' and Vietnam are addresed, in both the high and low level airwars, alogn with discussion, for the first in a western mass market book, of the pilots flying for the North during Vietnam.

No aviation fan of aerial combat should be without this book, for the ability to look up information and to see the aircraft.

I have glanced through the book, and decided to buy it. I haven't regretted it since. It is exacty like the title suggests: offering information on all (until 1994) fighter aircraft. Often the information displayed is concise, and could have been more elaborate, but I understaand that it is impossible to describe thousands of aircraft in-depth. It would probably take a dozen books to do that. Also, it is awkward to miss the aircraft of manufacturers that haven't built any fighter at all, or miss famous or even favourite aircraft that were no fighters. i just hope that there will be another book on the bombers, trainers, transports, maritime patrol aircraft, flying boats, etc etc that is as good as this. All in all it is an excellent reference work (displaying pictures if there were pictures available at all), of which there should be more. It should not be missed in any aviations' fan book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Who needs Jane's..........1997-10-14

This huge tome contains descriptions, stats, color and b/w photographs etc. of every fighter aircraft ever built by any country (as of 1994). The technical diagrams of the more well-known fighters alone are worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for millitary aviation fans and modelers.......1996-11-01

This book is a thorough and complete work, the scope of which is unmatched. Many rare photographs and outstanding color illustrations provide for hours of enjoyable reading or browsing. Limited text provides essential information on each aircraft line. Those wishing for lengthier accounts or more complete pictoral representation of individual aircraft will have to look elsewhere, but this book definately belongs on your shelf if you are a military aviation fan or scale modeler. I would caution buyers to thoroughly check the print quality, as I have seen several copies with manufacturing defects. Otherwise, this book gets highest marks

                    1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2000-07-29

Behind the title "The encyclopedia of 20th century conflict - Air Warfare" hides a very superficial book.

As an Israeli, naturally, I searched for information concerning Israel and the middle east - Arab-Israeli air warfare history.

I found a map concerning Operation "Moked" (the Israeli wipe-off of the Arab air power at the beginning of the Six Day war of 1967) but no decription of the operation nor the name of it (in the operation section) were found. I continued with my search going to 1982 looking for information of the major dogfight in which the Israeli AF downed 92 Syrian fighters just in 2 hours - (a third of the Syrian airpower and the largest dogfight in the jet age...) "9 June (1982) The Israelis launch the first of a series of attacks intended to destroy Syrian SAM system in the Lebanon". If you would wonder what was the previous major Air Warfare chronologic event - "3 June (1982) Leaflets calling for an Argentine surrender are dropped on Port Stanley and an RAF Vulcan lands at Brazilian airport after flying from Ascension"...

Other Air Warfare events like the Entebbe raid are not even mentioned, nor could I find an image of an F-15 or F-4 Phantom...

Concerning photos - the book has quite a lot of interesting images (my reason for buying the book was a photo of an Israeli Mosquito) of tested variants of the V-1 flying bomb both in Russia and USA and other interesting historivcal images.

If you are looking for a good book about Air Warfare - this might not be the best choice, but if you are looking for more inforamtion or interesting images this book is comes as an option. In general you will find some interesting info

                                Book Description

Tudor Parfitt examines a myth which is based on one of the world's oldest mysteries - what happened to the lost tribes of Israel? Christians and Jews alike have attached great importance to the legendary fate of these tribes. Each tribe of Israel claimed descent from one of the twelve sons of Jacob and the land of Israel was eventually divided up between them. Following a schism which formed after the death of Solomon, ten of the tribes set up an independent northern kingdom, whilst those of Judah and Levi set up a separate southern kingdom. In 721BC the ten northern tribes were ethnically cleansed by the Assyrians and the Bible states they were placed 'in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan and in the city of Medes.' The Bible also foretold that one day they would be reunited with the southern tribes in the final redemption of the people of Israel. Their subsequent history became a tapestry of legend and hearsay. The belief persisted that they had been 'lost' in some remote part of the world and there were countless suggestions and claims as to where. In the final chapter Tudor Parfitt reveals, using a combination of linguistics and genetics, what did become of these lost tribes.

1 out of 5 stars The Lost Tribes of Israel; The History of a Myth.......2007-06-03

This book clearly does not address any current factual information regarding the lost tribes of Ysrael. He merely states a propostion and spends the entire book justifying his conclusion. Poorly written and disconnected writing style with little or know facts support by any scientific or historical evidence. Certainly not worth reading for those interested in finding plausible and documented information regarding the lost tribes of Ysrael. I suggest reading Babylon to Timbuktu, and current Genetic test results of the East African Lemba tribe.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but has a SERIOUS agenda.......2005-02-18

Mr. Parfitt obviously did a lot of research to write this book - and it IS a fine one, well worth a read... but his agenda is clear from the start: he doesn't believe in the tales. Period.

The problems with his work are that some of the 'best' claims - the Pathans of Afghanistan, and the modern Peruvian and Bolivian tribes, are glossed over or mentioned only in passing. He also rather sneeringly glosses off any suggestion that the Falashas could possibly be of Jewish descent - though the Rabbinical Authorities in Israel, who are NOT known to be liberal in any way, shape, or form clearly accepted their claim. Falashas don't claim to be a 'lost tribe' - yet Mr. Parfitt devotes an entire chapter to an attack on their Jewishness. Even his quotations from other sources - so rich in other parts of his book - are glaringly missing from this chapter.

Another problem is that in the chapters, his date jumping is jarring; one sentence he'll be speaking of some event which happened in the 20th century, zoom back to the 1700s, then back to the 1800s... and give conflicting stories which take place in the same era.

As I said, this book is well worth a read - but he DOES have an agenda, and the book is clearly slanted to fit it.

4 out of 5 stars A good new addition to lost tribes history.......2004-10-25

This is the newest manifestation in writing on the Lost Tribes of Israel. When the ten northern tribes of Israel were gobbled up they became `Lost' and for more then 2000 years people have been speculating as to their whereabouts. This book traces the development of the `myth' of the Lost tribes, trying to show the various claims and hoaxes that have struggled to `discover' the tribes. Tracing this history from the New World to China, India, Africa and beyond the author shows expertly how missionaries and later Jewish researchers came to regard certain tribal peoples as descendants of the ancient Hebrews. The major flaw here is that this is a fascinating subject which this book actually makes boring. Here is a subject encompassing all the world and hundreds of interesting tribes with varying customs and traditions, many of which have been manufactured to appear Jewish in origin. Some of these tribes are practicing circumcision whereas some were shown to have merely `Jewish countenance'. This book immediately disregards that the Ten Tribes even exist, which obviously ethnically they probably do, although they probably are no longer Jewish. Who is to say the Bedouin or the Kurds are not some ethnic remnant of the Tribes of Israel? This book also makes dull a subject by focusing inordanently on the claims of various Baptist missionaries rather then going out and researching and describing the actual tribes themselves. SO while this is a great new addition to the last tribes literature it is by no means an enjoyable read.

                                  Book Description

The most exciting moment for an aeronautical engineer is when his or her design becomes a working aircraft, the endpoint of a journey that begins in the classroom. This textbook provides the resources that students need to understand the methods and thought processes involved in designing aircraft. Students learn through the use of specific analytical principles and practical examples taught to them through examples, case studies, and corresponding problems to solve.

For professors, this textbook comes complete with end-of-chapter homework problems that provide a summary of the concepts and features contained in the chapters. The problems provide the student with an excellent opportunity to analyze and synthesize industry examples, ensuring that they understand the key concepts and their applications.

A Microsoft Windows(tm) based software package on CD-ROM, entitled AeroDYNAMIC, is available separately or with the textbook.

Quite hard to follow. The organization is pretty weird and jumps all over the place. Diagram that are being refered to and are usually on the next page, so you end up fliping back and forth. Formulars are organized pretty badly. End of chapter has a summary which give the important parts, so that's a plus.

This is a great book for students just entering the world of aeronautics. It starts with the basics and gradually moves up, at a pace comfortable for almost anyone. Highly recommended.

Dr. Brandt did really great job on this book. The way of his approach to the idea of becoming aerospace design enginners is excellent, and most of the problams and exercises he describe are also outstanding.

Can environmentalism evolve into a powerful social movement that transforms human practices in ways that are ecologically sustainable? Gary C. Bryner contends that it is in our self-interest as a species to ensure that environmental movements coalesce in the service of sustainability. From the very first Earth Day to the setting of Agenda 21 for the new millennium, this book traces the actors, the issues, and the institutions involved in moving environmentalism from a loose collection of fuzzy groups and goals to a new global force for change.
