Book Description
Hard times are no stranger to the people of Appalachia and the South. Earlier books have documented the low wages of the textile industry, boom-and-bust cycles of coal mining, and debt peonage of Southern agriculture that have established a heritage of poverty that endures. This book is a unique collection of essays by people who are actively involved in the efforts to challenge economic injustice in these regions and to empower the residents to build democratic alternatives.

Book Description
Bias crimes are a scourge on our society. Is there a more terrifying image in the mind's eye than that of the burning cross? Punishing Hate examines the nature of bias-motivated violence and provides a foundation for understanding bias crimes and their treatment under the U.S. legal system.
In this tightly argued book, Frederick Lawrence poses the question: Should bias crimes be punished more harshly than similar crimes that are not motivated by bias? He answers strongly in the affirmative, as do a great many scholars and citizens, but he is the first to provide a solid theoretical grounding for this intuitive agreement, and a detailed model for a bias crimes statute based on the theory. The book also acts as a strong corrective to recent claims that concern about hate crimes is overblown. A former prosecutor, Lawrence argues that the enhanced punishment of bias crimes, with a substantial federal law enforcement role, is not only permitted by doctrines of criminal and constitutional law but also mandated by our societal commitment to equality.
Drawing upon a wide variety of sources, from law and criminology, to sociology and social psychology, to today's news, Punishing Hate will have a lasting impact on the contentious debate over treatment of bias crimes in America.
Customer Reviews:
I hated this book .......2006-03-13
I was opposed to hate crime legislation before I read this book. However, I thought that maybe the wisdom of Frederick M. Lawrence (B.A. Williams, J.D. Yale) would cause me to re-think my position. After reading Lawrence's tract, the fervor of my opposition to hate crime legislation has only increased.
I agree with Lawrence that members of certain groups are wrongly attacked solely because of their status. Further, I agree with Lawrence that such attacks are despicable and cause a special type of harm in that they attack something which goes to the core of a victim's being. Finally, I agree with Lawrence that as a policy matter it would be worthwhile to stop such attacks so that members of minority groups would not need to fear senseless acts of aggression and intimidation simply because of their status.
That is where I stop agreeing with Lawrence. I think he gets everything else wrong and fails to consider simple counter-arguments to the positions he outlines. For one, he does not set out a universal definition of who should be considered a hate crime victim. Who should receive this status? Might there be problems with not fixing a clear definition? Absent a clear definition, could a hate crime law then be invoked at a prosecutor's whim against any criminal defendant? Might that be a dangerous tool to give prosecutors?
Lawrence, who is Jewish, states that Jews are frequently targets of hate crimes. He also mentions African-Americans and homosexuals. This is all true. But there are lots of other minority groups that can be added to this list. Right now in America it appears that Muslims and homeless individuals are two of the most frequent targets of senseless violence (several homeless individuals were beaten to death in Florida, because of their status, just weeks before this writing). Lawrence fails to mention either group as deserving of hate crime protection. I would argue that both groups deserve protection at least as much as do the groups Lawrence names. Readers of this review probably also can think of several other groups that should qualify for hate crime victim status. Indians, Asians, the Polish, the Guyanese, prostitutes--people from these backgrounds all could qualify for hate crime victim protection. One would hope that Lawrence would concede that members of his ethnic background are no more deserving of protection that are members of these other groups. If that is the case, then hate crime legislation should protect members of ANY group that is targeted because of a particular status since members of all groups should be equally entitled to protection.
Lawrence would probably agree that many different minority groups can be subject to hate crime attacks. If he is an intellectually consistent person, he also should agree that a decent hate crime statue would protect all these different minority groups--not just the ones he happens to mention. Here is the problem. Hate crime legislation tends not to protect the people who need it most. This is because the groups who are in the most dire need of hate crime protection in any given city/town/state are generally the groups with the least political power. By this, I mean that the groups most in need of protection are generally: (1) the least likely to be able to successfully lobby for legislation which would get their group protected by hate crime legislation; and (2) the least likely to appear sympathetic in the eyes of prosecutors, judges and members of the jury in any given city/town/state.
I'll illustrate these prior two points using an example borrowed from Lawrence. Imagine a "union town" where nearly everyone is vehemently pro-union. Lawrence writes that in such a town "union membership, or the absence thereof" should be an appropriate characteristic for hate crime legislation. This may be true. But a few questions for Lawrence. First, how are the non-union workers in the town ever going to get the legislature to pass a hate crime bill granting them protection? If the town is pro-union, wouldn't you expect members of the legislature to oppose the bill for fear of being voted out of office? Second, even if the bill somehow got passed in the pro-union town, how likely is it that a prosecutor would ever successfully invoke the hate crime law where a union worker attacked a non-union counterpart? Good luck getting the prosecutor to charge the union worker with a hate crime! He might lose his job! Likewise, the judge and jury are unlikely to favor convicting the union worker of a second crime (the hate crime on top of the initial charge) in a pro-union town.
The example is simple and specific. But it is applicable in other cases as well. Previously I mentioned that homeless persons and Muslims are in need of hate crime legislation because they are often targeted because of their status. But how many Muslims or homeless persons are on the bench? How much political power do Muslims and homeless persons have in cities, towns and states? The answer of course is that there are very few Muslim judges in the United States and probably no homeless judges. Neither group has much political power in the United States or much influence. One would think that groups such as theirs are particularly in need of hate crime protection, but, unfortunately, due to their lack of influence these groups are among the least likely to get protection.
So it is with hate crime legislation. Hate crime legislation tends to favor those groups who possess political power, money and influence. But, paradoxically, hate crime laws generally fail to protect those who need it most--those devoid of political power, money and influence.
Lawrence's book deserves one star because it fails to consider such basic points. It does not acknowledge how politicized hate crime legislation inevitably becomes, and it does not acknowledge how hate crime laws are typically BIASED in favor of members of ethnic groups who possess money and power.

Book Description
Self-organized criticality (SOC) maintains that complex behavior can develop spontaneously in certain multi-body systems whose dynamics vary abruptly. This is a clear and concise introduction to the field of self-organized criticality, and contains an overview of the main research results. The author begins with an examination of what is meant by SOC, and the systems in which it can occur. He then presents and analyzes computer models to describe a number of systems, explaining the different mathematical formalisms developed to understand SOC. The final chapter assesses the impact of this field of study, and highlights some key areas of new research. The author assumes no previous knowledge of the field, and the book contains several exercises. It will be ideal as a textbook for graduate students taking physics, engineering, or mathematical biology courses in nonlinear science or complexity.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and honest.......2000-02-26
This book deserves 5 stars because it gives crystal-clear, precise, brutally honest and unbiased coverage of what "Self-Organized Criticality" is and what it is not. Don't waste your time reading Bak's book, read this one instead.
A GOOD FORMAL INTRODUCTION TO SELF ORGANIZED CRITICALITY........1999-11-19
This book is the first attempt to condense in a single text a mathematical introduction to the emergent field of self organized criticality (SOC). The author describes the main general ideas of SOC in the first two chapters. In the third chapter there are a presentation of some systems that can exhibit SOC. The fourth chapter is a presentation and a study of "toy models" in the spirit of SOC. The fifth chapter is about the search of a general mathematical formalism for SOC, which is still an open question. The author presents in this chapter some formalisms developed to explain SOC. In the last chapter, the author discusses essentialy to what extent we can observe SOC behaviour in real systems. There are five appendices, and the first three of these appendices present FORTRAN codes for three distinct toy models. I did not rate this book as five stars because in my opinion the author is very concise in some parts of the text. But this is a good book, and can be recommended to all those interested in the field of self organized criticality.
Good introduction to Self Organized Criticality.......1998-04-09
From the caracteristics of systems exhibiting SOC to their simulation and modelling as well as many classical and new examples of SOC systems.

Relies to heavily on sex.......2007-03-08
I know this comic is supposed to have adult themes but honestly it was not all that funny and relied too heavily on sex to get itself through. If you want a great adult comic which has some adult themes I highly suggest Cud as an alternative. The one thing I can say positive was the art work was not too bad. If the writing had been better it could have been a decent comic.

Khususnya arkeolognya.terima kasih.

Thorough Research, Questionable conclusions.......2000-04-29
This is a well researched book, summarizing all the arguments on the topic of the over 200 years missing from the traditional Jewish chronology.
However, the presentation is confusing and repetitious. And the conclusion, that the Talmud got his numbers wrong, does not jive with the supposed belief of the Author in standard Orthodox Jewish dogma. This link is still missing.

Good mathematics history/biography.......2007-05-11
EoL is, precisely as Publisher's Weekly says, "a thoroughly enjoyable mix of biographical portraits and theoretical mathematics." If, in places, the mathematical/logical ideas are not so clearly developed, I don't fault the author. In a book of this size (slim) and scope (broad), one can only hope to find a decent overview of a particular subject matter. EoL is more than decent; it is highly entertaining, informative, and thought-provoking. The great pleasure Davis took in writing EoL springs from every page. Davis is a fine guide through some very abstruse mathematical and computer science fields -- to which he himself has been a significant contributor. EoL is a first-rate piece of popular science.
Fascinating as both a 'History of Ideas' and as biographical sketches.......2006-07-22
A truly excellent book. Both as a 'history of ideas' and in its consideration of the personal trials and tribulations faced by Leibniz, Frege, Boole, Hilbert, Cantor, Godel, and Turing. The book traces the development of the computer through the life and work of these logicians/mathematicians, from Leibniz's dream of a language of symbolic logic and a machine capable of producing and testing true propositions in that language. This book is relevant not only to philosophers, mathematicians, and computer scientists, but to writers who seek understanding of the relations between language and logic in the contemporary electronic landscape. It will also be a good read for anyone wishing to understand the intellectual atmospheres from which the computer arose.
And it is poignant in its reflections on the fate of some of the most gifted logicians in history. Cantor spent a lot of time in sanitoriums; Godel starved himself to death over paranoia that his food was being poisoned; Alan Turing probably committed suicide by eating a poisoned apple.
Martin Davis is himself a renowned logician, and he approaches this writing with a depth of experience, knowledge, and human concern that makes this book a must-read.
By the way, the hardcover and the softcover editions have different names. The hardcover edition is called "The Universal Computer: The Road from Leibniz to Turing".
Limits in computers.......2002-07-26
It may be initially hard to connect Leibniz's series or George Cantor's quest for infinite numbers to the modern computer, but Dr. Davis does a masterful job of showing this logical progression. The progression continues to Godel and Turing, and from Turing to the modern computer.
Combining clear discussions of mathematical concepts with short biographical sketches, the intensity of some of these logical debates becomes clear. For the 20th century figures, Davis offers first hand accounts, such as seeing Godel and Einstein walking together at Princeton (and this picture is included in the book), or his own 1954 computer program of a mathematical proof.
On the question of who invented the computer, Dr. Davis sides toward Turing and the influence of Turing on von Nuemann (contrast with Herman Goldstine: the Computer from Pascal to von Neumann). Davis points out that the difference in architecture between Turing and von Nuemann is still evident today in the difference between RISC and full instruction set computers. In the final chapter, Davis debates John Searle's understanding of the mind and consciousness. I hope Davis writes a book about the logical connections after Turing. These include Maurice's Karnaugh's method of minimizing boolean expressions, Jay Forester's memory and Industrial Dynamics, and perhaps Ted Codd and C.J. Dates database thinking.
Paperback edition of "The Universal Computer".......2001-11-25
This book has deservedly been reviewed in glowing 5-star terms in its hardcover version ("The Universal Computer"). This paperback edition is the same book. If you want to understand the ideas behind computers, this is the book for you!
okay.......2001-10-18
good general discussion of the mathematical foundations of computation, but very little material on how the theoretical
work in the early 20th century was transferred to working machines.

Book Description
A compelling manifesto using ten buildings to illustrate how environmental responsibility promises to reinvigorate contemporary architecture.
Contemporary buildings, like contemporary forms of urban development, are major contributors to the environmental crisis. In this book documenting a major traveling exhibition organized by the Architectural League, curator and critic Peter Buchanan uses ten buildings that combine environmental responsibility and design excellence to argue that sustainability is not just good for the planet, but offers architects new opportunities for creativity and innovation. He shows that there is no single route to sustainability and no such thing as a green aesthetic. Rather, through a range of building types, he demonstrates that increased awareness of a building's setting combined with advances in technology create unlimited opportunities for responsive design. Generously illustrated with four-color photographs and plans, the book includes work by an international roster of architects, including Norman Foster, Neutelings Riedijk Architecten, Herzog + Partner, and Renzo Piano. 164 color photos and line drawings.

Environmental responsibility in architectural creations.......2006-03-12
Peter Buchanan's TEN SHADES OF GREEN: ARCHITECTURE AND THE NATURAL WORLD centers on ten buildings which illustrate how environmental responsibility influences modern architectural pursuits. Peter Buchanan is a curator and critic: his choices reflect designs which blend environmental responsibility with design excellence, showing how such a focus provides architects with new, innovative ideas.

Book Description
Green Thoughts, Green Shades is a strikingly original book, the first and only of its kind. Edited and introduced by noted seventeenth-century scholar Jonathan Post, it enlists the analytic and verbal power of some of today's most celebrated poets to illuminate from the inside out a number of the greatest lyric poets writing in English during the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Written by people who spend much of their time thinking in verse and about verse, these original essays herald the return of the early modern lyric as crucial to understanding the present moment of poetry in the United States. This work provides fascinating insights into what today's poets find of special interest in their forebears. In addition, these discussions shed light on the contributors' own poetry and offer compelling clues to how the poetry of the past continues to inform that of the present.

Book Description
How much does regulation matter in shaping corporate behavior? This pathbreaking, in-depth study of fourteen pulp manufacturing mills in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand reveals that steadily tightening regulatory standards have been crucial for raising environmental performance. But while all firms have shown improvement, some have improved more than others, many going substantially beyond compliance.
What explains the variation in compliance? It’s not necessarily the differences in regulation in each country. Rather, variation is accounted for by the complex interaction between tightening regulations and a social license to operate (especially pressures from community and environmental activists), economic constraints, and differences in corporate environmental management style. Shades of Green provides the most extensive and systematic empirical study to date of why firms achieve the levels of environmental performance that they do.

Book Description
Deeper Shades of Green documents the convergence of two great American movements -- conservation and the struggle for social justice. Environmentalists, once faulted for ignoring minorities and the poor, are recognizing the need to find common ground. Poor communities of all colors, the worst targets of pollution and waste-dumping, are perceiving that environmental ills are part of their larger fight. Spurred to action out of concern for their families' health and safety, they are bringing new energy and focus to mainstream conservation.
As a blue-collar college student, author Jim Schwab worked summers in a Midwest chemical plant and saw its toxic effects on fellow workers. As an environmentalist and urban planner, he was troubled by the relative absence of poor and nonwhite people in the conservation constituency. All that began to change, he recounts, with the landmark Love Canal case, which transformed a shy housewife named Lois Gibbs (who has Contributed a foreword to this book) into a nationally known citizen activist and gave impetus to other neighborhood struggles.
In evocative, hard-hitting reportage, Schwab profiles eight minority and blue-collar communities that rose up against environmental injustice -- in an African-American suburb of Chicago, Louisiana's notorious "Cancer Alley," and an Ohio mill town, among others -- in the process forging unprecedented bonds with national environmental groups. He notes the special place of Native Americans in this web of newfound allies: America's first victims of social injustice, they have been among the strongest voices linking abuse of the land with abuse of human rights.
In a later chapter, Schwab examines how industrial America can clean up its act, spotlighting progressive businesses and utilities, anti-pollution technologies, and other practical solutions. But change starts with people power, and that is his real subject: "African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and blue-collar whites" joining together "in an environmental revival that is on the verge of shaking American politics at its roots."

Book Description
The spreading and institutionalization of environmentalism and the overall greening of society are processes that take place in different ways spatially, chronologically and in different areas of society. In some areas of social life environmental viewpoints have become a crucial part of planning and decision-making, whereas in others they still have no substantial and practical relevance. Understanding the processes of environmentalization demands a broad theoretical perspective, but it also calls for analysis of individual cases. An important question is whether the process of environmentalization has penetrated Finnish society? The studies in this anthology indicate that it both has and has not. It has penetrated it as an administrative project and as a marketing gimmick, and in many ways environmentalism has become part of people's everyday life (recycling, "green consumption", etc.). However, it is still very much evident that this development has not been coherent or stable, and it definitely has not permeated all levels of society to the same extent.

Customer Reviews:
Compelling, suspensful, well crafted novel of good vs. evil........2000-02-04
Peter and Miranda are a nouveau-riche couple who move into an ancient Mission in California only to find, too late, that the Mission has a history of dark secrets and death. Towering over the Mission is a vast Tree, an ancient and alien species that begins to exert an hypnotic effect over the couple. Miranda's dreams and waking life are filled with fragments of Indian myths, the lulling sound of Gregorian chants, and the horrific wails of dying Franciscan monks. Underlying it all is the heavy musk of the 50,000 year old Tree that creeps into the very core of their dream house, disrupting the fiber of their idyllic life. When Miranda becomes pregnant, her foetus is poisoned by the toxic tree fruit and Peter almost dies in an "accident" in the Mission pool. Finally convinced, Peter pits his wits against this primordial adversary. A Deadly Shade Of Green is a compelling, suspenseful, well crafted novel of good versus evil, but in a context and in a frame that inhibits a clear-cut dichotomy or easy answers. It may be Man who is the trespasser here!
A Deadly Shade of Green.......2000-01-29
Excellent, had me riveted and horrified! Extremely well written and researched, almost as though describing true events. I doubt if I will ever look at a tree the same again without being reminded of this book. Well deserving its prize of 'novel of the year'.
A Deadly Shade of Green is truly a great book!.......2000-01-27
A Deadly Shade of Green is a horror story in the very best sense of the word! The descriptions are great, and the story continually had me wondering, "How much of this is really true?" And as much as I would like to see the tree, I certainly never want to meet it!
The book is really good and very much worth buying, reading, and saving to read again.
