I must say that this book had me fooled. I almost thought it was the story of a real pimp. The pictures are better than the story however and one should be very careful about trying to "gain game" from this book. Great for living room display.

The photography alone makes this book worth buying. It's a wonderful coffee-table book. But, I also found it to be surprisingly educational. The use of photography combined with compelling text, allows for an intimate look into a sub-culture not easily understood and one that is quickly disappearing. It is both timeless and thought-provoking.

I loved this book. Don't get me wrong. Pimps are not heroes and they aren't victims of society either but this picture book is gorgeous. The photography is awesome. You may not want to keep this book on your coffee table or you will have some explaining to do when company comes over but it is fascinating.

too many errors.......2005-03-23

i just finished teaching a 10 week intensive course on database administration using this book, and i found that there were far too many errors to make this an effective text. the typos were extremely frustrating for the students, and virtually every chapter had several important mistakes. these typos make the labs all but unusable, and the book is in dire need of an editor! it made my 10 week class difficult, to say the least.

A solid Reference.......2004-06-23

I had this book over a year. I started reading it when I passed my first ocp exam (1z0-001). This book is very organized and sufficiently detailed to give you a solid knowledge to master the topic covered in the exam 1z0-031, Fundamentals I. I think this book is not written for someone who wants to rush in getting certified. If you take your time and read this book you will get a solid knowledge of the topic covered in the exam 1z0-031, Fundamentals I. The book walks you through some pratices that build over time a complete understanding of the topic on the exam. But I did not rely mainly on this book for the exam 1z0-031. Since the book does not have a lot of practice exam questions I had to use other references such as the Sybex book by (Chip Dawes and Biju Thomas) and the oracle press book by (J. Couchman and Sudheer Marisetti). Those are good books too. But they tend to focus more on the idea of "what you need to know to get certified". The Sybex book is pretty good with Chapters well-structured and explained. The Oracle press book provides more practice exam questions that I used to test my knowledge of the topic.
I will definitely recommend this book to ocp candidates. I give 5 stars. I will probably buy the one related to exam 1z0-032, Fundamentals II

Oracle occupies over 30% database market in the world. So Oracle's skill is valuable. But it is difficult to learn in the beginning. Although a lot of courses, they are expensive. This book gives u the beginning. After finish it, you will have confidence to take the examination. But if u learn more about Oracle on Linux platform. I am sure that you can find a job in the world. Though it did not cover advanced topics and give more examples in general but the flow of this book is very good and easy to understand. A DELIGHTFUL HISTORY OF MONARCHS & NOBLEMEN.......2001-04-26

First let me express my thanks to amazon.com for locating a copy of this book for me even though it had been out-of-print for more than thirty years.

This book traces all areas of life involving the various classes of noblemen such as Lords, Barons, Earls, Counts, Duke etc. and their relationship with the crown with particular reference to the reign of Elizabeth, Charles and James. It showed the noblemen as a group involved with extravagant expenditures and often died in heavy debt in order to maintain the high social status required of their position. This 'status' thought was also associated with the fact that arranged marriages were the norm in the middle ages. It also showed the development of 'education' from being trained soley in military skills to moving into the academic world. However, not all nobles were really 'noble' as a quote from Sir Walter Raleigh will put it in the best way. "The Justices of Peace in England have opposed the injustices of war in England."

What fascinated me was the fact that at various times in history ANYONE could have become a Baron, Earl, Lord etc. if he/she had enough money to buy the title! Throughout the middle ages, monarchs often sold titles to raise cash! The sale of the 'Baronet' started as a new title in on the market in 1611. The sale of titles ceased in 1629 when even an ex-convice, Ralph Buckinsham was sold a title! However, sales continued again in 1641 with a renewal by King Charles. It is interesting to note that the first round of sales led to the (temporary) abolition of The House of Lords and the second rounds from 1891 to 1921 led to a severe reduction of the political powers of the Lords.

The classic study of the nobility from Elizabeth to Cromwell.......1999-11-07

Stone, who died in 1999, established his international reputation with this work, one of the most important books published on Engish history in the last half century. He examines the decline of the Court centered aristocracy as against the provincial squires, with the consequent loss of Parliament and the country. He also mentions the remarkable sequel: the Aristocracy regains its power and prestige, this time leading Parliament. Like all of Stone's work it asks large questions , and dares the reader to analyze it independently. It is a great temptation. I admit that my own prejudices incline me to the view that the landed gentry who backed Cromwell, and the landed gentry who were loyal to the King were not that different from each other, which is why Cromwell was successful (he could easily conciliate his former enemies, who were just like his gentry supporters) and why Cromwells revolution was swept away in an instant with no oppostion(the gentry decided they wanted their King back). It is a testimony to Stone's book that I was forced to think these things through, and that I am still not sure wie es eigentlich war, as Ranke said.

Rest in peace, Professor Stone. A light has gone out in Princeton.

The introductory chapters are excellent essays on science...what it is, why we use it, how it came to be.

Then there are 3 outstanding case studies: Cholera, Heat, and Insanity. Each contains examples of good science, bad science, and things that are NOT science, but useful nevertheless.

Finally, there are closing chapters. While there are some gems there, some of these are the weakest part of this outstanding book.

In the 40ish years I have been reading about science and the societies that use it, this is one of the very best books that bear on it.

How we know, exploration of the scientific method.......2003-02-07

This book through historical cases demystifies the confused readers not trained in science. It shows the important part that intuition plays in the scientific paradigm, something the Belgian writer Georges Simenon also asserted a lot. It starts with what is Science then proceeds to facts and interesting historical cases like Vibrio cholera, heat, or the concept of madness (more related to social sciences than pure science). For hard science, you have to look at chapter 14 on logic and mathematics, chapter 15 on probability and the last chapter deals with statistics. All in all, it is an exhaustive book that could be useful reading in high schools.
