Book Description
A disenfranchised young woman adrift in a corporate world of virtual sex and cybertech espionage who finds herself fused to a strange symbiotic alien
Book Description
Now Andy Kane evens the score in the battle of tenants vs. landlords. When Kane wrote Care & Feeding of Tenants, he loaded the gun against tenants. Now he's written a book just for tenants. Find out how to get free rent, phone and electricity; get more heat; break a foolproof lease; beat a landlord in court; wipe out cockroaches; and order repairs and redecorations at the landlord's expense.
Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money!.......2006-04-21
I purchased this book hoping to receive some sound advice on how to deal with a very difficult landlord. Instead, all I found inside was the author's bad attempt at humor and nothing to help me with my landlord. Example: get free rent - go on welfare! If you're looking for ways on dealing with your landlord that are helpful and sound, don't waste your money on this ridiculous book like I did.
Some landloards need to be harrased.......2005-03-06
Many landloards are good upstanding businessmen and women. There however are times when a landlord will take advantage of their tenants by playing enethlicaly and sometime plain illegaly. I am glad someone finnaly wrote about how to fight back against evil landlords.
Thanks for improving the American way Andy.......2002-11-29
It's pretty sad that someone would even publish a book with this title. What's next?
Any tenant interseted in this book should divert their energy towards getting their own place.

Book Description
In Unit Operations, Ian Bogost argues that similar principles underlie both literary theory and computation, proposing a literary-technical theory that can be used to analyze particular videogames. Moreover, this approach can be applied beyond videogames: Bogost suggests that any medium--from videogames to poetry, literature, cinema, or art--can be read as a configurative system of discrete, interlocking units of meaning, and he illustrates this method of analysis with examples from all these fields. The marriage of literary theory and information technology, he argues, will help humanists take technology more seriously and hep technologists better understand software and videogames as cultural artifacts. This approach is especially useful for the comparative analysis of digital and nondigital artifacts and allows scholars from other fields who are interested in studying videogames to avoid the esoteric isolation of "game studies."
The richness of Bogost's comparative approach can be seen in his discussions of works by such philosophers and theorists as Plato, Badiou, Zizek, and McLuhan, and in his analysis of numerous videogames including Pong, Half-Life, and Star Wars Galaxies. Bogost draws on object technology and complex adaptive systems theory for his method of unit analysis, underscoring the configurative aspects of a wide variety of human processes. His extended analysis of freedom in large virtual spaces examines Grand Theft Auto 3, The Legend of Zelda, Flaubert's Madame Bovary, and Joyce's Ulysses. In Unit Operations, Bogost not only offers a new methodology for videogame criticism but argues for the possibility of real collaboration between the humanities and information technology.
Customer Reviews:
I've Become... Smarter.......2007-01-01
A bulging boutique of bottom-up beats bearing from baroque battles to bogus babalities.
Criticism Reloaded.......2006-03-29
Unit Operations is every bit as brilliant - and damn fun a read - as those of us lucky enough to've had early glimpses at Bogost's project had hoped.
It's tempting to write a review of this book in the form of a treatment for a mega-million-dollar console game, and that temptation seems to me no accident: this book will change the way you pay attention to ALL, in both senses of the word, coded systems you yourself use.
The backstory of the book's authoring is itself almost too Hollywood (or new Hollywood, since EA, Blizzard, and LucasArts are the MGM, WB, and Disney of our era): author was a Chief Technology Officer for an A-list interactive marketing agency in L.A.; author leaves the biz to become a professor working on recombining the DNA (and languages and ontologies) of software development with the DNA (and languages and ontologies) of literary and cultural criticism; his mutant creation is now on the loose.
Your mission, reader, is to...
To what? Because in the game of Unit Operations, the first-person shooter is transformed into something of an Eleatic archer: where before our attention would just race to the next target, Unit Operations teaches us new ways to listen to the Bow.
The open-source software movement has from its beginning been particularly well-attuned to games with written language's units of operation. Unit Operations provides a long-awaited common ground for both technological and literary culture.
Not since first reading Geertz' Interpretation of Cultures have I had the sense of encountering so path-breaking a work in the level of its critical innovation and the clarity of its readings.

Old book.......2007-01-16
With the new format for the CCNP tests i would advise getting a newer book. Although you will find very usefull information in this book the new tests require updated information that just isnt located in this book.
so over all its a good book but not so good for studying for the CCNP tests.
Don't waste your money.......2006-10-23
I bought this book for my CCNP recertification. I ran into a bunch of stuff on the exam that was not covered in this book or was in greater detail than was covered by this book. I used Sybex books before on my original CCNP certification and I passed. If I try to recertify, it won't be with one of those books. I'll use Cisco Press. Live and learn.
Great Book for CCNP, with a few errors.......2006-08-17
Once again, Sybex has come through with a great resource for CCNP studies. I have trained hundreds of students in pursuit of their CCNP certification with this book.
As the IT Mentor CCNP Boot Camp instructor, I selected this book library years ago as my primary resource for the class. My students find the books easy to read and full of usefull information. The labs are very good, and overall, the book is great.
Once again, my only problem with Sybex is that their books have a large amount of typos and errors in the first few editions.
adequate as a review resource.......2005-07-23
Having all four CCNP topics in one book seems like a good idea. It only works as a review resource though. If you don't already know the material this is not the book for you. It doesn't go into enough detail on enough topics to cover everything that you need to know for the exams. It is a good resource to review before you take the exam.

Great Product.......2001-10-02
No sim is perfect but being able to supplement learning from sim based on Cisco hardware is a godsend. The most important benefit is the ability to test out scenarios without damaging a real network. For what it is, it's still better than no accessible Cisco network at all but improvements are always welcome.
The video clips are excellent.......2001-09-19
This is a great kit nothing else on the market offers as much as this does for the money. The Video clips through out the four courses makes understanding concepts easy without spending thousands of dollars at a school. Dont get me wrong nothing beats hands on practice at a school but if you dont have the time and money this kit is for you. Add the CCNP Virtual Lab to help you gain hands-on understanding. I highly recommened this kit and the CCNP Virtual Lab.
Same ol' Todd Lammle.......2001-07-25
I know my subject line sounds harsh but after being burned by the CCNA eTrainer I loss all faith in Todd Lammle's eTrainer material. My biggest gripe is that I rushed out on release day to pick up the (price) CCNA eTrainer only to find it riddled with bugs. I continued to check (website)hoping to find some sort of patch or addon that would fix the bugs and restore COMPLETE functionality but none was found! This is a clear case of a (...) company failing to care about customer service. If I noticed bug I am sure Sybex's quality control department saw them also but they failed to correct them because at the time there was a rush to get any sort of eTrainer material to market. That probably explain why they flew off the shelf so quickly. Despite my displeasure with the eTrainer I prefer his books over Global Knowledge, McGraw Hill etc.... I would like to see Sybex take responsibility for duping thousands of customers out of their hard earned money!!!!!
This product gets 1 star for its track record. I didn't see anythng below 1 star.
CCNP.......2001-07-06
Hi,
This study guide is OK, but my impression is that you can not pass the test with this alone. There is lots of errors in the study material and review-tests, especially I found the "Dial" chapter could be much better. The review tests are much more simple than the "real" test, but you can still learn your weak areas and study them further. If you are studying for CCNP and like "e-learning" this is a good supplement.
CCNP Complete Virtual Trainer.......2001-05-28
I bought CCNA Virtual Lab e-trainer for CCNA and found it a great. This package is ok but my initial impression is it is little better than the books. Flashing arrows and speech is nice but there is nothing to beat good learner interaction while reading the chapter and just questions at the end. E-learning has a long way to go to beat a good book with appropriate questions. I have given 4 stars for good clear content and presentation not for the e-learning section

Customer Reviews:
great!!!.......2005-03-04
When i first started reading Yell-oh girls, it was kind of boreing and i didn't think i would like it. What drew me to it was the reveiw ont he back of the book. Eventually after i got through the first few pages, i found the book to be really interesting and informative. I thought the author did a great job putting this book together, with all the stories she added into it. I really enjoyed all of them. I never knew what these young girls had to go through. Being called a foreigner everywhere you go,and being stuck between two countries and not knowing which to choose. It must have been really hard!! overall, i thought this book was great!!! :)
Worth YELL-ing about!.......2004-11-03
"YELL-Oh Girls!: Emerging Voices Explore Culture, Identity, and Growing Up Asian American," an anthology edited by Vickie Nam, contains more than 80 pieces (both poetry and prose) written by young Asian American women. There are also a few "mentor pieces" by established Asian American women. The book is organized thematically into 5 main sections: "Orientation: Finding the Way Home," in which writers "explore the Asian American landscape"; "Family Ties," which focuses on relationships with family members; "Dolly Rage," which deals with the intersections of physical appearance, difference, and discrimination; "Finding My Voice," about "wrestling with language, trying to somehow find the words to portray ourselves"; and finally "Girlwind: Emerging Voices for Change," which celebrates the activism of "the women warriors of tomorrow."
Each author is identified by her name (except for a small number of anonymous or pseudonymous pieces), age, and town they have lived or currently live in. Cities from many parts of the United States (California, Hawai'i, Illinois, Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas, etc.) are represented, and there is at least one writer from Canada. The young writers, who range in age from 14 to 22, have cultural/ancestral roots in many different nations: Korea, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Laos.
Over 300 pages long, this anthology is full of fascinating selections. Most of them are very short. Some seem like seeds of what could become longer pieces. Some pieces seem to whet the appetite more successfully than satisfy it, but the best pieces are really noteworthy.
Some of the selections I found most impactful are as follows. "Her Three-Inch Feet," by Jenny Yu: a moving portrait of a great-aunt who had evidently undergone footbinding. "The Other Sister," by Kim McKee: about being adopted and having Caucasian family members. "Going Undercover," by Wendy M. Thompson: a reflection on having both Chinese and African American parentage. "Zine Grrrl," by Kristy Chan: a fascinating piece about alternative literary creativity. "Waving Fans," by Mia Chan Mi Park: about being the drummer for an all-Asian American female rock band. This last piece has my favorite line from the whole book: "YES, Asian American women also rock. . . and we rock hard, dammit!"
This book challenges stereotypes and offers bold new images of young Asian American women. And while rooted in the Asian American female experience, the book addresses many themes that are equally relevant to men and to women of other ethnic/cultural groups. Overall, this is a fine anthology, and a fitting companion to such groundbreaking anthologies as "Home Girls" and "This Bridge Called My Back." "YELL-Oh Girls!" is, in my opinion, a good choice for college courses, for reading groups, or for individual reading.
Expected more.......2004-07-15
I went into this book with the expectation of learning more about the asian american story- instead I got very generic stories. I think it would be better if the writters weren't all just teenagers and early twenties.
Hear Them Wail?.......2003-02-25
As a young Asian female living in the USA, the stuff those are talking here struck me so close to home. The only regretful thing I found in the work was that wailing tone in most of the writing and the quality of those writings which was not very satisfactory. That might be one of the reasons the book looks somewhat lacklustar. You can never attract audiences unless you achieve to express somewhat universal recognition on human condition even through one's tiny and too personal experience. Otherwise, writing works always end up being in a dead end of complain and negativities. This book seems to have alredy done a marvelous job to give the minorities who needs to let their voice heard the opportunuty to Talk. The next goal is to get broader audiences. The quality of the writing would be the inevitable key to success.
MUST READ!.......2003-01-16
I could not put this book down. It's very comforting to know that I am not alone out there.

Customer Reviews:
Too many statistics and not enough humanism.......2000-10-22
I appreciated this book in the sense that it provides some very useful statistics concerning the various ethnic groups within the Asian American population. Yet, I felt that this book lacked personality and soul. I wanted more than numbers. I wanted to see the big picture about the lives of Asian Americans. I wanted to see them as people.
On top of that, I think that the title perpetuates the stereotype that Asians are foreigners. An "emerging minority?" It implies that persons of Asian descent are just being noticed and just beginning to do things that are worthy of notice. Its true that not much is known in mainstream society about this community, but we have a long history in the U.S. Granted, most of the Asian American population are new immigrants, but our presence and legacy in the U.S. and in the Western hemisphere goes way back.
This book is a nice introduction to the Asian American experience, but I would use it as a supplement and not a primary sourse of information. Takaki (Strangers from a Different Shore), Chan (Asian Americans: An Interpretive History) and Espiritu (Asian American Women & Men: Labor, Laws & Love)do a much better job.

Original.......2005-08-03
This book is fantastic! The ideas are original and easy to follow. This is not just for teachers, but for parents as well. I purchased it for my twin preschoolers and we have had a great time at home. Bravo to the authors!
If you're new to kids, this will help you........2000-06-12
I've been working with kids for a long time. These ideas were not new to me, but if you are new to science or new to working with kids, you will enjoy them.
Wonderscience : A Developmentally Appropriate Guide to.......2000-06-07
A must get science book for pre-school and elementary teachers alike. The experiments lit the kids up and got them asking questions even the teachers had not thought of. Best of all the supplies were either already in the cabinet or at the grocery store. This book even got the grown-ups going crazy for science. Try it out. The experiments are quick and easy to do but simply magical in their results and the thinking that follows. Try out the Magic Touching Bags they were one of our favorites.
Fabulous science book for early scholars!.......2000-06-01
This book is the perfect introduction to science for pre-schoolers thru third grade. The experiments described are novel, fun, easy, and informative. They use inexpensive and easily attainable items. - it is a great VALUE compared to the other book on the market that really focuses on an older audience. I highly recommend this tried and true resource to teachers and parents to give their kids the head-start they deserve.
Fun, but old ideas.......2000-05-02
The ideas in this book have been around for a long time in many different books. I would pass this one up for something new. There's another book out called "The Best of WonderScience" you might like better.

Book Description
Which species can be saved, when all cannot? Systematics, Ecology, and the Biodiversity Crisis provides critical tools for finding answers to the current of systematic biology. Systematists are in a unique position to identify ciritcal areas of endemism and additional criteria for the identification of habitats and species most urgently in need of protection.
The result of a symposium held at the American Museum of Natural History, this book fills a void created by other volumes that have explored the biodiversity crisis exclusively from an ecological stance. "It may well be that the dynamics of extinction processes will prove to be exclusively in the domain of moment-by-moment interactive processes of matter-energy transfer: the realm of ecology. But the problems of extinction," Eldredge argues, "can be defined, recognized, measured, and assessed only through the tools of the systematists, paleontologists, and ecologists who explore the relationship between ecology and systematics as it pertains to understanding the origin, maintenance, and loss of biological diversity. The role of museums, zoos, and relatied institutions is also examined.
At a time when our contry has only recently awakened to the environmental crisis, Systematics, Ecology, and the Biodiversity Crisis provides urgently needed information for any attempts to understand and ameliorate the present dilemma of extinction and preservation.
