Not quite what you'd expect..........2000-11-11

It's an okay photo reference, with a lot of pictures that provide a whole variety of moods, poses, and expressions - some clashing in theme from one page to the next... I guess the best way to describe it is chaos in a photo-literary work.

I gave it 3 stars as it was not all-in-all bad, but it was not quite as I expected, and not quite useful if you purchased it for the same reason I did (drawing study reference). However, there is enough material in this book that you could use it as such - I would just recommend you purchase the Paperback Edition, as the Library Binding one is Overkill (as I found out)...

Interesting, but a little........much.......2000-11-07

The idea that images of pregnant women are missing from the mainstream media is an interesting one. Unfortunately, this book hashes this notion out in the most dense, uninteresting prose imaginable.

And the illustrations are of pregnant women in various forms of undress, in shocking positions and situations, and looking none-too-appealing.

An idea that could have been confined to an article. And could have been done with photos that were just a little less revolting.

Hillarious!.......2001-01-08

I got this recently as a present and laughed my head off! I searched Amazon and bought it as a gift for 4 of my pregnant friends and can't wait to give it to them! Highly recommend!

Great premise, poor execution.......2002-02-18

This book sounds fascinating, but be sure to try one or two before purchasing it. The mysteries often require such things as "it wasn't suspect 2 because she sounded sincere." Well how is the reader to know this?

A few of them were more straighforward and solvable, but for the most part at-home sleuths will find themselves wishing the author had been the victim in at least one of the murders.

The cases were impossible to solve even when all the clues were read. The twists and turns were hard to follow. An example of this is in one case you were supposed to know that the criminal was hiding in the bathroom, with no clues that lead in that direction. DO NOT PAY 12.00 FOR THIS BOOK.

I just finished this book, and I disagree with the previous commentor. The book is highly readable. But it is clearly propoganda. I agree with the raters that give it low stars. If you want to learn about this topic, this is probably your worst starting point if you have any interest in a fair overview.

An important book even if it is unreadable.......2006-07-05

I found reading Darknet like reading a novel by James Joyce - next to impossible. There is far to much jargon. The book reads like an extended blog. This book was clearly written for insiders - the people who are familiar with technology and working with it everyday. The problem is the issues raised in this book effect all of us. People who need to read and understand these issues will either misread it - as many of the reviewers here did, or fail to understand it.

Gives the people what they want to hear at artists' expense.......2006-05-29

This book makes me very very angry, and not in the way that the author wants. He clearly wants me to be angry at big media for keeping me from doing what I want with my content whenever and wherever I want to. He gives story after well told story of how the law stops people from doing clever and creative things like adding video to their Sunday sermons. But he completely ignores the artist. Without the artist, his big media has nothing to offer. Doing the things he advocates makes it impossible for the digital artist to earn a living in their primary medium. That is why the laws that he so wants to change are there in the first place. He wants you to forget that by telling one side of the story. I, as a digital artist struggling to make a living, cannot forget that side of things.

Reading this book is like listening to a speach by Bush. His position is that "reasonable people" will agree with him, and those who don't either miss the point, are "unpatriotic" to his clearly righteous cause, or are just idiots. If you are interested in this topic, read the summary of the book and the posted comments. You'll get a good grounding in both sides of the issue - something that the book itself does not provide.

This book really explains our times.......2006-04-22

I originally heard about this book, while I was listening to a recorded Q and A session of South by Southwest (SXSW). I'm really glad I followed up and got it. Lasica did a fantastic job explaining our culture and how we interact with technology and new media. This book really wraps up how different groups such as corporations, senators, pirates and musicians affect it. Things are happening that you won't necessarily agree with on all sides.

Technology isn't as simple as making discoveries, because of the slow moving patent driven society we have become. The two sides covered brilliantly by Lasica are basically those who want or have ownership over information so they can control pricing, distribution, and those who want to use technology and media as creators, not just consumers. But it's the examples in the book that make it great...of the groups driven to darknets who don't want to be limited by laws that they feel are outdated, unjust, those who want information for everybody. These people from all walks of life are very interesting. Plus I loved all the references I learned about from reading it.
