"We have met the enemy, and he is us.".......2006-06-19
In Brian Walker's book,"The Comics since 1945" ,the first thing said about Walt Kelly is,"One of the most versatile talents ever to work in the medium,Walt Kelly mastered all of the art form's tools and techniques. He was adept at flights of fantasy as well as biting political satire. He loved clever wordplay and penned lines of nonsense and thought-provoking philosophy. Intellectuals praised 'Pogo' for its literary content, and children delighted in the strip's visual slapstick and enchanting whimsy. With his facile brush, Kelly conjured up a world filled with talking animals and evocative scenery."
Kelly was born in 1913,graduated from High School in 1930,worked as a reporter and cartoonist for his hometown newspaper in Bridgeport,Conn. In 1935, he went west to seek his fortune in the animation business. 5 years at Walt Disney Studios working on 'Pinocchio,Fantasia, and Dumbo',honed his talents, and he went back east and worked on a number of strips, including,Our Gang,Raggedy Ann and Andy, and others.
Pogo first appeasred in 1942,published by Dell. This led to the creation of over 150 characters, each with names and personalities ,eventually populating Okefenokee Swamp.
Kelly continued the strip for the rest of his career,dying in 1973.Kelly once summed up life with these thought-provoking words;
"There is no need to sally forth, for it remains true that
those things which make us human are, curiously enough, always
close at hand. Resolve ,then, that on this very ground,
with small flags waving and tinny blasts on tiny
trumpets,we may meet the enemy...and not only may he be
ours,he may be us."
Along with the daily strips,Walt Kelly gave us many books. In the end, these books became very helpful for those to remember the stories and characters we followed over the many years. With some searching, these books can still be found and are a great way for anyone who did not " follow " the strips as they came out; to see what Pogo was all about.
This is a particularly good book because it consists of 3 books ,"Instant Pogo", "The Jack Acid Society Black Book", and "The Pogo Poop Book"; all in one.
If you're not familiar with Pogo;here's a taste;
"Doc,you better learn your old dogma a new trick..."
"We have tabacos..better than nothing...but in your country,
what you have? SHORTAGES! " Castro to Khruchev
"You forget prominent proverb! Very funny in Russian: The
shortage will be divided among the peasants." Khruchev to
Castro.
" To shoot,we learn, is not the question. To miss is the
problem."
"A toad by any other name would be a frog."
And how about this verse?
" I'll show you us armadillos sing:"
"MA BONNY LICE SODA DEVOTION!
MAY BONNEY LIFE SAVER D.C.!
MCBONIFACE ROVER COMMOTION
OH,BRICKBAT MAHONEY
TOOMEY"
Or how about this;
THE TROUBLE WITH PEOPLE IS PEOPLE
If we could climb
the highest steeple
And look around at
all the people,
And shoot the ones
not wholly good
As we, like noble
shooters,should,
Why,then there'd be
an only worry...
Who would there be left
to bury
us?
Boy, does this book ever bring back the days of the great Comic Strips!!
Pogo Revisited again and again.......2001-02-03
I started reading Walt Kelly's POGO books as a child. I thought they were funny then. As I grew to adulthood I realized the levels of humor that Kelly had built into his strips. He was a brilliant political cartoonist and I still enjoy reading his books and discovering the depth of his skewering of the political elite. They just keep getting better and better.

Greatest Book of All Time.......2003-07-17
Edward Gorey was a master of the macabre. his books were morbid and strange (sometimes unsettling, even), and the pictures made it all the worse. despite that, he was a wonderful story teller. his books were scary, yes, but in a comical sort of way. my grandpa used to read this book to my sister and me when we were young (a little bedtime story-type deal), and the pictures used to scare us half to death, but the book itself was very amusing. it's the sort of book one would expect to find in a Goth's house, i guess. i definately recommend this book to everyone. it would make a great edition to a Gorey collector's stash, or just to an avid book-lover's pile!

Book Description
The Quintessential II books are the Advanced Tactics series from Mongoose Publishing. Neither replacing or requiring the use of the first Quintessential series, these books explore aspects of races and character classes never before examined and allow players to fully recognize the potential of their characters. Featuring character paths that allow players to develop without the need for prestige classes and what options are available at epic level and beyond, these books are truly the next stage of character development. This fifth book in the series details one of the most popular races of all, the Elves.
Customer Reviews:
Good, not quite great.......2003-02-24
This book can certainly help a DM (and players) add some depth to elven characters in a campaign. Elven alchemy and herbalism are great touches, as are the elf-specific feats. There are also some new items that can add a distinctive flavour to your elves.
The archery trick-shots are much appreciated. My own players have been suggesting they ought to be able to perform stunts like this with the feats they had and now this book provides rules for it, which saves me the headache of having to do so.
On the other hand, some sections will only be useful if your imagination needs a kick-start. Most DMs and players should be able to come up with their own basic ideas for elven strongholds and character concepts. On top of that, most of the subraces section is basically a reprint of material from the MM and DMG with the exception of the three new subraces.
None of the prestige classes looked particularly striking. Also, while they present a bladesong fighting style (not a prestige class), I found it lacking. WotC's (corrected) prestige class is a much better take on the concept, in my opinion.
Ultimately, I rate D&D supplements on how much use I get out of them. If elves are going to play a major role in your campaign, this book can help you add the detail to make them that much more. It doesn't quite live up to its "quintessential" claim, though.
Elves, what's not to like?.......2002-09-23
I must admit elves are my favorite fantasy race, so for me buying this book was a no-brainer. I was very pleased with what I found. It has three new elven subraces and pc stats for all the elven subraces in the Monster Manual(including drow). It has lots of equipment elves use and many prestiege classes for them to join. The thing I like best is the rules for elven high magic! Add in new feats, new combat styles and an in-depth look at elven culture and this book is a solid buy for any D&D fan, and, if you like elves, a no-brainer of a purchase.

Microsoft Windows Media Resource Kit - reference book - CD
Customer Reviews:
Don't throw away your return instructions........2007-07-26
Just received this book, and am thoroughly dissapointed that it doesn't match its description.
This book is a very high level description of the infrastructure and PC-level details required to create a website that streams video. That should be it's title, or at least the Amazon descrition.
If that's what you are looking to do - then this book will get you started. However, if you are looking for details of how to use windows media in applications (as I was) - this isn't the book.
Great Resource for Windows Media Formats.......2006-08-18
Despite it being three years since the release of this book, it remains the definitive guide to dealing with most Windows Media Streaming issues. To date, it's the single most useful book available on working with the WMA, WMV, and ASF formats. Starting with the basics of explaining the difference between streaming and downloading, the book immediately jumps into all the nitty-gritty details related to encoding audio and video files for streaming, the complex considerations for outfitting a streaming server, when to use unicast or multicast, creation of on-the-fly server side playlists, and some of the most comprehensive compression formulas available. While there are obviously competing alternatives to the Windows Media content delivery solutions, the Windows Media Resource Kit provides a compelling argument for why the Windows Media solution may be among the most effective available. Yes, Windows Media Player 10 is out now and Windows Media Player 11 is coming soon, but the information contained in this guide will be relevant for content delivery at least until the release of Windows Vista. I hesitate to call this the bible of Windows Media content creation and management, but it comes close.
Not worth it.......2006-03-30
This book is really a complete waste of money - it can only be used for developing quick and dirty solutions using the windows media player and so on.
I wouldn't recommend this book even to my most hateful enemy. Unfortunately I was deceived by its looks.
A whole new set of ideas from reading this book........2003-05-05
I thought that the Media player was used for videos, music and online content. While this is true there is so much more that can be done with the application and this book will help guide you through.
You'll find ways to create and manage video streaming sites, as well as creating and playing movie trailers. Yopu be given the ability to setup and take care of the Intranet media server and services.
The authors have done just about everything for you except create the final presentation. They also included a cd with the book with a couple of useful and handy utilities like Producer and the SDK.
Overall this book takes you from the beginning of the process to the Web Portal and beyond. The only limits you have is your imagination.

Time Tales.......2006-12-08
Looking for the perfect gift for a youngster that you will enjoy as much as the recipient does? Try one of Buckley & Leacock's fabulous renderings of events in American history. The four books they have written (Kids Make History, Journeys for Freedom, Places in Time and Journeys in Time) weave a richly embroidered and at the same time historically accurate tapestry of the story of our nation's founding and continuing development. The authors have fastidiously researched and presented narratives that explain why we are proud to be Americans, with detailed maps and illustrations that are informative and entertaining accompaniments. These are books to be read again and again, cherished and kept forever.
wonderful historical teaching aid for middle schoolers.......2002-07-22
What a wonderful book! You can help your middle schooler envision treks of historic interest with these twenty two-page spreads. Pictures use up most of the space and depict people, including children, on the move; some cross-sections are employed. Text describes the journey, and sometimes stories are personalized through the experience of a child. Numbered entries within the text point out events or places, and a sidebar lists interesting facts. Very nicely done and a terrific aid for visual learners.
Presented in chronological order, the journeys are: a Native American creation story; Columbus's voyage, 1492 AD; the founding of New Mexico, 1598; Mayflower voyage, 1620; Ben Franklin's travel from Boston to Philadelphia, 1723; a slave ship, 1735; Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road; bringing Ticonderoga's guns to Boston, 1775; the Lewis and Clark Trail, 1804; California 49-ers' trip around Cape Horn, 1849; the Sante Fe Trail, 1852; the underground railroad, 1856; a Civil War regiment's movements, 1862; John Muir's travels in 1867; a cattle drive, 1879; westward immigration, 1884; a cross-country airplane trip, 1911; Louis Armstrong's train ride from New Orleans to Chicago, 1922; a migrant worker's journey, 1959; a Vietnamese refugee, 1976. Notes and an index are included.
Very nicely done. Highly recommended.

The definitive book on this dissolute royal!.......2005-08-18
"Prince Eddy" is a lively recounting of London's Cleveland Street Scandal of 1889 and the involvement in it by Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (a/k/a Prince Eddy). Part biography, part history lesson, part crime novel "Prince Eddy" captures the sexual mores of the Victorian Era quite well and along the way paints a very unflattering portrait of a mostly forgotten royal. As the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) Prince Eddy was 2nd in line to assume the throne and a horrible potential heir and monarch. Born premature Prince Eddy showed little intellectual curiosity and indeed may have been what Victorians termed "feeble minded" if not mildly retarded. As a result of his stunted intellect and ambivalent sexuality Prince Eddy wound up in the center of a homosexual rentboy scandal that threatened to publicly implicate him. Many other gentlemen and aristocrats were exposed in the scandal, many of whom were quite close to Prince Eddy and were it not for the intervention of the royal family and their retinue of courtiers he likely would have been found out. Scrupulously researched utilizing police papers released in 1975 by the Public Record Office concerning the case, and the letters of one of the other participants in the scandal, Lord Arthur Somerset, Aronson has confirmed the Prince Eddy's involvement beyond a reasonable doubt.
Aronson details the whole of Prince Eddy's dissolute and sordid life including his heterosexual relations and engagement to Mary of Teck. Aronson dispels the many myths about Prince Eddy's death in 1892, including those that he was spirited away to an asylum to prevent his ascension to the throne and he explains how Mary of Teck wound up engaged and subsequently married to Eddy's younger brother George (later King George V and Queen Mary). It's frightening to think how close someone as incapable of ruling as Prince Eddy came to just that. Prince Eddy was long implicated as London's notorious Jack the Ripper, which Aronson thoroughly debunks. Well researched, thoroughly footnoted and well written "Prince Eddy" is perhaps the definitive book on this pathetic and forgotten royal. Presented in a factual manner the book is nonetheless a lively pageturner.
Fascinating and sane treatment of a controversial subject.......1999-10-19
So much bunk has been written about Queen Victoria's grandson -- that he was Jack the Ripper or at the very least connected to the Ripper murders, etc. Here at last is a responsible, intelligently researched and extremely readable look at "Prince Eddy" and the real scandals that plagued his short life. Aronson does a wonderful job of depicting the homosexual underworld of Victorian Britain, bringing up some enlightening "home truths" for those who foolishly think that homosexuality is only an issue for our time. I would commend this book to those interested in gay history, in royal watching, and in the Jack the Ripper case as well -- it is informative and rewarding on all three topics.
Customer Reviews:
A book every aspiring scientist should read........2000-06-20
Not a great book, but a very important one. I first read _Betrayers_ in graduate school, when I was still innocent and naive, believing that no scientist would ever compromise her reputation by any form of intellectual dishonesty. Further, I believed that anyone who did would inevitably be found out--that's how the scientific method works, right? Reading this book has made me much more skeptical of claims that seem to be revolutionary, a change in my attitude toward science that has proven valuable more than once. This is a book that should be required reading for graduate students (and possibly undergraduates) in science fields. Every scientist has been tempted to write things down the way they should be instead of the way they really are, to "fudge" data or present results in the best light. The pressure of a professor, granting agency or tenure committee breathing down your neck may make the temptation to produce results at any cost much worse. Knowing the stories presented in _Betrayers of the Truth_ has made it easier for me to be scrupulously honest in my records of my work and to avoid even the most innocent forms of scientific dishonesty.
I'd like to see a new edition of this, with coherent beginning-to-end coverage of some of the high-profile cases that have surfaced in the years since its original publication. Younger scientists may have a hard time piecing together a complete story from the fragments of coverage in the news and in trade magazines.
Ethics in Science.......2000-04-13
One of the best references showing controversies concerning the analysis and presentation of scientific data. From Pilttown man to Millikan case a wide variety of topics related to scientific fraud and deceit. The best introductory survey on the subject of scientific dishonesty. The main point is that we need more precise descriptions of the moral failings involved in cases of fabrication and falsification if we are to understand the causes of these defections and betrayals. The book is carefully researched and contains a wealth of material about fraud and deceit in science.
