4 out of 5 stars When Art Matters More Than Story.......2002-04-14

If you're looking for dialogue and complex story arcs, pick up a book by Brian Michael Bendis--Jinx or Goldfish are good places to start. However, if you're like me and prefer your comics with an emphasis on the artwork with story to a close second, then Pat Lee's work in Darkminds might be worth your time.

Obvious inspirations include Blade Runner (the setting), Akira (psionics, motorcycle gangs), Ghost in the Shell (cybernetic female lead). To say the plot is cliche'd would be an understatement, but disregarding the well-apparent influences it's an engaging mixture in terms of creating a deep sci-fi atmosphere. Dialogue is above average but definitely written in a way that makes one feel that they're processing cels of a full-length anime feature rather than a sequential comic book. But the art is definitely the strength--Pat Lee has a certain sense of the cinematic which somehow ascends traditional comic style, and it's much appreciated.

By making the art resemble something more of a anime film rather than a straight up comic, it helps give the plot weight through providing tremendous amounts of visual information.

4 out of 5 stars Politics and Whimsy are more than enough for Applause.......2003-07-26

A fable, a diatribe, a biography - there's a little bit of everything in this slim little book, and all of it so richly written that it evokes incredible imagery.

'Stories of Politics' and 'Stories of Whimsy' is the dividing line between the different collections of tales, historical tid-bits, and concrete poetry that make up this book. In the Politics side are stories that bring back the origins of the queer movement, and tell the tale of the first 'Freedom Flag' (what we now call the 'Pride Flag,' and its grandparents, and prior ideas). These were stories I found interesting, and certainly educational in a way that - as always - gives me nothing but admiration for those who came before me and didn't even have the slight rights and concessions I sneered at as merely 'a inadequate poor start.'

The Whimsy writings were just plain fun. Werewolf fables, and stories of grandmothers and granddaughters passing along holy swords, and other such delightful stuff as to make one smile. A nice reminder of how much I enjoy magic realism, I'll definitely have to take these stories as an omen to go find me some more C. Whitefeather Daniels.

It is difficult for me to be objective, as I know Whitefeather personally, but as you read this book, her amazing words shines out at you from the pages. She manages to say all of the "expected" things(such as live each day as your last) in the most unexpected ways. She has a full understanding that life is not always fun, not always happy, and most of all not always easy.

Once you start reading Rebel Without applause you will no be able to put the book down.

            Book Description

A bold reappraisal of science and society, The Woman in the Body explores the different ways that women's reproduction is seen in American culture. Contrasting the views of medical science with those of ordinary women from diverse social and economic backgrounds, anthropologist Emily Martin presents unique fieldwork on American culture and uncovers the metaphors of economy and alienation that pervade women's imaging of themselves and their bodies. A new preface examines some of the latest medical ideas about women's reproductive cycles.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars provocative and worthwhile.......2006-11-09

Though it may seem a little dated, the issues and questions Martin raises are still relevant today. This thoughtful book speaks to the alienation and detachment many women feel at the hands of modern Western medicine and should be of interest to anyone studying medical anthropology, cultural andthropology, sociology, or women's studies. Some people may have problems with the methodology or feel that the book is pushing a feminist agenda (personally, I thought the chapter on PMS was a little muddy) but most people I know who've read it have found something in it that they can relate to even if they don't agree with Martin 100%.

5 out of 5 stars Very intriguing book.......2001-01-24

I was very impressed with this book. It covers the anthropological view of reproduction, including historical perspective, menses, pregnancy, motherhood, and menopause. I recommend it for anyone interested in anthropology, women studies and especially for anyone pregnant.

Every company large and small wants to boost its sales, control its spending, and keep the auditors at the Internal Revenue Service happy. But, no company wants to waste time on more paperwork. These days, a growing number of companies are turning to QuickBooks accounting software not only to speed up their bookkeeping efforts, but manage their businesses more effectively. Organizations come in all shapes, sizes, and business models, so it's no surprise that accounting practices can be a convoluted road to travel. QuickBooks can handle many of the financial tasks companies face, but the price you pay is an overabundance of software features. To make the learning curve even more challenging, QuickBooks doesn't come with a manual. Fortunately, to help pave the road to accounting success, there's QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual, a comprehensive guide from O'Reilly that examines everything the QuickBooks Pro edition has to offer, from invoices and inventory to assets and accounts payable. With QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual, financial managers can quickly learn how to use the program's tools to implement and maintain critical accounting processes. By covering details in a friendly and light-hearted way, the book explains when and why a feature is useful, and then offers indispensable, relevant advice. Each page of this Missing Manual provides insightful tips and tricks to help readers become more efficient, sophisticated users no matter what the extent of their existing knowledge is. Whether you're interested in QuickBooks for its basic bookkeeping features or its more powerful, business planning tools, the only way to truly harness its power is to read the book that should have been in the box: QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book! Highly recommend!.......2006-03-11

I was new to quickbooks and this book really helped me get going and give me confidence using QB- it answered a lot of the detailed questions I had and helped round out my understanding of QB. Now I don't just put entries into QB and then have blind faith that it will do what I want. Rather, the book helped me understand more of the intracies of what QB is doing with the data, and it also helped alert me to some of the "gotchas".
It works great as a reference guide too- I don't read the whole thing but rather just read a section when I need to know how to do that one thing; for example setup QB for employees.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a usable manual for Quickbooks!.......2005-09-03

Ms. Biafore has taken a subject which can certainly be incomprehensible, and created a manual that is not only readable, but understandable as well. My company has nothing to do with financial information, but I certainly wouldn't be able to function without Quickbooks, and now, Ms. Biafore has given me the ability to work quickly through the items requiring my attention, check things that might bite me later, and move on to my primary function, finding ways to make money for the company. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Thank Goodnes!! A Missing Manual for QuickBooks 2005.......2005-04-05

Many readers may already be familiar with the QuickBooks software, or its personal, home finance management software Quicken, both from the Intuit company. Intuit is well known for their superb financial management software, and when you purchase the QuickBooks 2005 software, you will receive additional startup documentation to help you with the software.

However, as is the case today with most all software, companies just cannot any longer afford to produce extensive paper based user manuals, as this cost just can no longer be considered essential, mainly because this would add further cost to the software. In today's highly competitive software market, vendors are always looking for ways to add value to their program, while not necessarily adding cost to the product. Thus, in most all software programs today, the user's manual, or the help on using the software is electronic and built into the software instead of being printed on paper based books included with the program in its retail box.

While this is understandable, this has also opened a market for third-party, add-on paper books from the computer book publishing industry, which is best exemplified by this large, impressive title by Bonnie Biafore from Pogue Press/O'Reilly. As is always the case with any O'Reilly title, you can depend on the material to be of high quality, well written by professionals known to be experts in their field, and of great value to readers.

In the case of the QuickBooks software, Pogue Press/O'Reilly has provided an important title that will likely sell very well because of the hundreds of thousands of customers who are working with or seriously considering Intuit's QuickBooks software to help them manage their company's finances.

4 out of 5 stars useful Merchant Services?.......2005-04-04

Biafore puts before you a rather detailed helper for QuickBooks. While she concentrates on the Pro version, the text helpfully describes differences with the entry level Basic version, that is strictly for a single user. And she also compares what the Pro lacks vis-a-vis the more expansive (and expensive) Premier and Enterprise level solutions.

If you have used other Missing Manual books, you might discern that this text seems to have more intricacy than most of those. In part, this could reflect the subject at hand - your accounting. By its very nature detailed and quantitative. Those who need this product tend to be highly motivated to knuckle down and spend the necessary time to read all the details. Other texts on other products might describe consumer level products that are recreational. A book like this, you read because you have to.

In the text, I found the most interesting remarks were about the optional Merchant Services offered by Intuit. Where you can get a merchant account through them, that lets you accept credit card payments from your customers. You'll have to evaluate the cost-benefit details compared to going to a bank. But potentially it's a great time saver, that lets you outsource a lot of the hassle of handling credit cards. If that is probably not a core competence of yours, it's worth considering Merchant Services.

5 out of 5 stars Great book--tons of useful advice.......2005-03-12

Full disclosure: I'm the editor of this book, so the fact that I think it's an extraordinarily useful guide should come as no surprise. I am, however, in a good position to comment on the inaccuracies of RH's review, posted on March 8, 2005. First, although the reviewer says s/he bought "QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual," returned it and then bought "QuickBooks 2005 The Official Guide," in fact, s/he had posted a positive review of "The Official Guide" three months earlier. More important for other potential readers, the reviewer's comments about sales tax are plain wrong: pages 298 to 301 of "QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual" are devoted to setting up sales tax payments, with step-by-step instructions, and additional discussions are sprinkled throughout the book--and all cross-referenced, where relevant. Finally, the book is jammed with tips and advice about QuickBooks, and how to use it to make good financial and business decisions--all things you can't find in either the Help files or other books on the subject. We hope this Missing Manual is truly helpful to many readers!

                        Book Description

This book examines Chinese transnationalism as a distinctive domain within the new "flexible" capitalism emerging in the Asia-Pacific region. Interweaving anthropology, cultural studies, and interpretive political economy, essays in this book are based on new ethnographic research, in a range of sites, that examine the connections of human agency, cultural politics, and indeed pathos. Critiquing the view that these changes are the product of the ways that late capitalism and its concomitants--flexibility, travel, sub-contracting, multiculturalism, and mass media--are reworking the identities of an ethnic population in different global situations.

                          Book Description

This important book deals with the modeling and design of higher-order single-stage delta-sigma modulators. It provides an overview of the architectures, the quantizer models, the design techniques and the implementation issues encountered in the study of the delta-sigma modulators. A number of applications are discussed, with emphasis on use in the design of analog-to-digital converters and in frequency synthesis. The book is education- rather than research-oriented, containing numerical examples and unsolved problems. It is aimed at introducing the final-year undergraduate, the graduate student or the electronic engineer to this field.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, wide scope, but not so in-depth.......2004-12-16

I have many SDM related books written by American, so I buy this book as it is (seems to be) from Europe. Not amazing that the content layout is quite different from the others.

For example, in this book, you will find some interest topics like constructing a SDM ADC by LF356 and CD4013 (bandwidth is limited to few hundred Hz as we can all expected), and some non-ADC or DAC applications of SDM techniques (presented in last chapter, which really inspire me).

You may need some other books if for designing a practical SDM products, but this book is really good for students or system design engineers, due to its simplicity.

5 out of 5 stars Very good and broad coverage of material.......2004-06-08

This is an excellent introductory book covering basic material like modeling, stabilization, tone suppression and circuit design. I found it very useful in introducing me to the field. The exercises and the provided solutions in the web were useful too!

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners........2004-01-28

If you have problems in understanding other delta-sigma books, Bourdopoulos' book will be good for you.
I am searching for an introductory book for my students, but most other books are either too difficult or focused on narrow topics.
Bourdopoulos has many step-by-step explanations for equations that other books skip.
Also, I like that the authors are providing solutions for the end-of-chapter problems on the web.
