3 out of 5 stars Interesting story, horrible binding.......2004-08-04

I really enjoyed this book. As the other reviewer has mentioned this book uses a different method for presenting dialogue. Rather than using "balloons", as usually seen in comics and graphic novels, this book uses more of a script layout. Just like reading a play, the character speaking is indentified with there dialogue following. The same method is used in "Torso" by Brian Michael Bendis. I personally don't have any problem with this method of dialogue in a comic, but it will take a little bit of time to get used to. Personally, I enjoyed this story. It is a story that has been told before in other contexts, but it is still entertaining. The real reason I bought this book is because of the artist that worked on it, Jay Anacleto. This guy is absolutely amazing. His pencil work is near photo quality, it is absolutely amazing. He was also the artist for "The Magic of Aria" which is also a good comic. My BIG problem with this book is that it fell apart...literally. I have pages falling out of this thing while I try to read it. That is ridiculous. If not for the binding of this book I would have given it 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Not the usual.......2004-04-16

The art is at least half the reason I buy comics, and the art is what hooked me in this collection. Every panel is monochrome, black and white with a second color. That color sets the tone and seems to identify the point of view: tans appear center on Our Heroine, blues usually shift the focus elsewhere. The black and white illustrations have a raw, realistic style that works. Page layouts have a patterned black background that sets off the panels well, and good printing makes the blacks dense and rich.

The story is exciting and good for a long run: super-spy babe on the run from the evil organization and her one-time partners. OK, it's been done and redone. Every new version has its own variant, and the twist to this story makes it worth reading (no, I won't tell). The story isn't wildly original, and the color schemes didn't originate here either - remember Ms. Tree? As long as the story and art are strong and work together, I'm not going to worry too much.

There were only two things I disliked about this book. One was the typography. The captioning was a bit of novelty that just didn't work. With so much else so well done, that was a disappointment. The other was that the book literally fell apart in my hands. Grr.

Five stars for the artwork, four for the story, less for the text, and zero for the binding.

      Book Description

Every year millions of Christmas trees are purchased from choose-and-cut Christmas tree farms. When suburban families load up the kids, grandma, grandpa and all the pets and take off with a complete lack of knowledge of what they're getting into, you have all the ingredients for some hilarious stories. What could be so tough about planting and watching Christmas trees grow? That's what Darrell thought when he came up with the idea of getting rid of the long-horns and planting a forest. Join Darrell and Betty as they move to the country and find city and country cultures sometimes clash in unexpected ways:

      - picture a toddler crawling into a tree baler and coming out wrapped up for Christmas...

      - there's more than the scent of pine in the air when Darrell hires his nubile young niece to help the "boys" load cars in the parking lot...

      - consider what happens when you introduce an enthusiastic Spanish-only speaking laborer to electric shears with instructions to just "take a little off the edges"...

      - if you color-code the price stickers on the trees and your staff doesn't admit they're color-blind...

      - and more than you ever thought you could possibly know about growing trees... After twenty years in the business, Darrell looks back on this unique, demanding, exasperating, frustrating but ultimately rewarding profession -- the reward comes from the customers, especially the kids, as families search out that perfect tree. His stories are are heart-warming anecdotes, well-sprinkled with irony and down-home humor. A great, side-splitting laugh of a book you will enjoy reading any time of the year--and you'll never look at a Christmas tree the same way again!

        Book Description

Hitler's regime not only terrorized its citizens; it also seduced them, offering stability, a traditional value system, a sense of belonging, and hope of a better standard of living. Nazi cinema was part of this seduction, expressing positive social fantasies and promoting the enchantment of reality, so that one would want to share in the dream at any price. This interdisciplinary study, based on exhaustive research in German archives, examines how thirteen films from five genres -- the historical musical, the foreign adventure film, the home-front film, the melodrama, and the problem film -- enchanted audiences and enacted shared stories that can tell us much about how family, community, history, the nation, and the war were imagined in Nazi Germany. MARY-ELIZABETH O'BRIEN is associate professor of German at Skidmore College.

          Book Description

It is the thesis of this provocative book that the deteriorating state of America's public school system is actually a reflection of the problems in our culture and society. In Waiting For A Miracle, James P. Comer M.D., Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Yale University Child Study Center and the author of Maggie's American Dream, and co-author of Raising Black Children, outlines the cause of these afflictions and presents an inspiring paradigm for a new way of thinking and acting with regard to children and family. At the root of the problem, he states, is a social failure to make a commitment to families, and to community and child development. Using many examples from his personal experience of growing up poor, and from more than thirty years of community involvement, Comer argues that schools can be the most important instrument of change in a society. He spells out how private, public and non-profit sectors can collaborate to enable children, families, and communities to survive and thrive.

There are no quick fixes in education--nobody knows that better than child psychiatrist and school reformer James P. Comer. The director of the Yale University Child Study Center has seen his School Development Program achieve varying rates of success and failure at more than 650 schools. In his sixth book, Waiting for a Miracle, Comer ties education issues into a larger social cause: today's youth, particularly urban, disenfranchised, African American children. Only through a national focus on supporting black youth, linking them to community organizations and providing jobs, Comer argues, can society hope to erase the "designated loser label" that plagues future generations. It's an idea that could take 20 to 30 years to reap positive results, he warns. Comer isn't trying to reinvent the wheel; much of what he preaches is already in effect, to a lesser degree, in some cities (the book offers nine such programs as prototypes).

An engaging writer who uses wry humor and heartwarming anecdotes, Comer attacks a number of myths about black culture, drawing from his own life growing up black and poor in East Chicago, Indiana. He credits much of his success to his two hard-working, humble parents, and thoughtfully dissects his own experiences while avoiding playing the race card. He talks frankly about race relations in a way that reaches out to other cultures. In doing so he offers a voice of hope in this quick, enjoyable read--a must for community activists, politicians, educators, and anyone who cares about the future of our schools and the children in them. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

This is an excellent book that I bought many years ago. I have used it in pre-school settings. Now many years later I just bought a second copy to give to the Social Service agency I now work with, for use in their playgroups. It would be perfect for parents who want to spend quality time with their children. The book has clear instructions for each craft with full size templates. Unlike so many other such books, this book has crafts that are a hit with all the children and many are new ideas never seen in other books. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Barbara L. Dondiego knows how to entertain children and give them hours of crafting fun.

Some fairly informative chapters contain introduction to common configuration, authentication, configuring SSL, using WebDAV and subversion.

But lot of space in the book is wasted on topics that were cool in the last century like compiling apache and compiling single modules, but not relevant anymore. Today you are likely not going to recompile you server every week, but you SHOULD install security patches every week, if you take your job seriously. IMHO there is only one possibility - to rely on the services of your linux distribution.

By the way, Debian and derived distributions also do a great job combating the mess in the httpd.conf by meaningfully dividing it in multiple configuration files, so you have a good place to put your specific settings making an automated upgrade to the newer apache version easy. So do not listen to the author, never edit your httpd.conf. ;-)

The author describes in detail topics, that are not relevant anymore in the web application development (assumed that you are creating an application, that goes besides "hello world"). Delivering dynamic content (chapter 6) used to be server-side includes and cgi but it is NOT anymore because of poor programming model and poor performance.

Typical scenario nowadays is to use apache as a front end web server, letting apache serve the static content like pictures and providing a wrapper or proxy to a high performance application server (for example mongrel if you using rails) or using mod_python for python or using zope etc. In this context I would wish elaborative description on mod_rewrite, that is pretty complicated.

My conclusion: if you are beginner, search for a better introductory book. If you are advanced developer/admin/hacker, then use primary resources like [....]

                    5 out of 5 stars Professional's Apache Reference.......2006-12-15

This is by far the best standalone book on Apache I've seen. It really is a very good reference for professional web server admins, as well as developers and others, who need help in managing Apache web servers. It's well-written too, something that is becoming increasingly rare in the technical book area.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VERY WELL WRITTEN BOOK.......2005-08-31

The book is very well written it has helped to go through with the apache server i will recomended it to manyone who is interested in these kind of books. Very explicitly described the content of the book.An excellent purchase

5 out of 5 stars One of the better books for getting a good handle on Apache.......2005-05-03

In this voluminous title author Peter Wainwright covers the Apache web server in detail. Chapters include Installing Apache and basic configuration, building Apache the way you want it, configuring Apache the way you want it, deciding what the client needs, delivering dynamic content, hosting more than one web site, improving Apache's performance, monitoring Apache, Securing Apache, Improving Web Server Security, and Extending Apache. It has some excellent sections on advanced configuration, handling robots, dealing with errors and handling them correctly, name-based and IP-based virtual servers, and improving the performance of your server. The section on securing Apache covers authentication (including digest and LDAP) and using SSL (including some advanced configuration techniques).

There are better books that deal with some of the specific areas of this text (for example, Hardening Apache is much more thorough on the subject of securing your server) but you won't find a more comprehensive text in a single volume than this one. Pro Apache, Third Edition is highly recommended and my first choice for anyone looking for a single book to learn how to setup and configure an Apache server or serve as their primary reference.

                    4 out of 5 stars New - Apache 2.......2004-06-27

Why a third edition? Wainright's first edition was well received and Apache was improved after the edition was published. So he produced a second edition. Guess what? The open source Apache has continued to accrue infalling upgrades. As Wainright explains, there are now two main versions, 1.3 and 2. Apache 1.3 is essentially the direct descendent of earlier versions. Very stable on unix/linux, on which it was originally developed.

But the key thing about this new book is its descriptions of Apache 2. Apache 1.3 had inferior performance on Microsoft computers, when it was ported. Some people got fed up with this state of affairs and recast crucial portions, to produce Apache 2, which now directly uses native MS threads. It has much better performance than 1.3, on MS computers.

The book goes into this in fuller detail. Plus it has the usual voluminous descriptions of what you can tweak for most web server needs. Luckily, if you want to deploy or use a vanilla configuration, the early chapters should suffice. Then consult the later text for more specialised needs.

If you are already running Apache 1.3 on a unix/linux computer, it seems from this book that there is little incentive to migrate to 2. Relatively little to gain.

Unity is an often-heard word in Arab and Islamic circles. This historical dictionary seeks to show that along with the underlying sources of unity, there are also sources of division in these groups. Unlike other volumes in this series, this volume focuses not only on the organizations, but also on the key countries and figures of the region. Includes: o An explanatory introduction o List of Acronyms o Chronology o Bibliography

the book itself is good - if you are looking for the next edition because of a requirement for class, this book isn't too far off. Page numbers are a bit different and there are a FEW selections that are not in this edition that are in the next one. But you will survive the class.

I am a sophmore in high school, and we are currently using this book for our European Civilazation Class. The book itself is very informative, and it gives excellent insight to the world of Ancient Greece and Rome in particular, with analysis of philosiphers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. However, the way the book is written is difficult to follow, and it does not always lay things out in an easy-to-understand format. Nevertheless, a good textbook for High School and College Humanities classes.

Wolfgang Sachs is one of the most thoughtful intellectuals to deal with the dual crisis in the Western world's relations with nature and social justice. In this book readers will find trenchant and elegant explorations of some of the foremost issues the world faces at the beginning of the new century: efficiency--the mantra of our times; speed--the love affair with modernity; globalization--a market inevitability and the juggernaut of history?; sustainability--oxymoron as rhetoric; development--the 20th century's great undelivered promise; limits--a new principle for the coming century.
