Book Description

The historic European Union Directive on Data Protection will take effect in October 1998. A key provision will prohibit transfer of personal information from Europe to other countries if they lack "adequate" protection of privacy. If enforced as written, the Directive could create enormous obstacles to commerce between Europe and other countries, such as the United States, that do not have comprehensive privacy statutes.

This book provides the first detailed analysis of the sector-by-sector effects of the Directive. It examines such topics as the tension between privacy laws and modern information technologies, issues affecting a wide range of businesses and other organizations, and effects on other prominent sectors with large transborder data flows. The book concludes with detailed policy recommendations on how to avoid a coming trade war with Europe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For those who loves privacy.......2000-04-29

This is a necessary tool to every person, not only to lawyers, interested to know how the "personal data protection" works in the European Union. You will be surprised with the similarities between the privacy regimes in Europe and the United States, notwithstanding this systems differ in important particulars. The book includes the study of the ways in which restrictive data protection law may clash with free trade agreements signed by the US and the members of the EU, as the World Trade Organization. The book is highly recommended.

            Book Description

This volume contains a description of the synthesis, structure, physicochemical and catalytic properties of organometallic complexes of yttrium, scandium, lanthanum and lanthanoids. Along with the true organometallics, the alcoholates, thiolates, amides and similar classes of compounds are considered. The last section of the book deals with practical applications of organic derivatives of rare earth elements. The book contains a large number of tables and illustrations giving physicochemical, spectral and structural characteristics or organoderivatives of lanthanoids. The comprehensive data presented obviate the need to refer to original publications.
For researchers and graduate students of organometallic chemistry.

            Book Description

No other book on the market today can match the success of Halliday, Resnick and Walker's Fundamentals of Physics! In a breezy, easy-to-understand style the book offers a solid understanding of fundamental physics concepts, and helps readers apply this conceptual understanding to quantitative problem solving.  The extended edition provides coverage of developments in Physics in the last 100 years, including:  Einstein and Relativity, Bohr and others and Quantum Theory, and the more recent theoretical developments like String Theory.  This book offers a unique combination of authoritative content and stimulating applications.

2 out of 5 stars OK at everything...Good at nothing.......2007-08-23

This is a huge physicals book that may be good as a singular source of general physics, but I found it to be useless in helping me understand anything.

            1. The exercises in the middle of the chapter were often the most helpful, but were easy to overlook.

            2. All equations are bolded, but they do a poor job of differentiating general proof equations from equations you actually use to solve problems.

            3. There were not enough visual examples of proofs that were discussed (show me or explain to me further what you are prooving).

            4. Pictures for problems sets were often not drawn to scale (and they didn't tell you that). I know that's not terribly important, but it would be better if it was.

            5. There were also lots of typos in the problem sets.

            6. If your class is using a newer edition, spring for the newer edition. Problem sets are numbered differently, chapters are in different orders, and some information is presented very different in newer versions that I've seen.

            Book Description

This widely-praised translation of Premchand's most celebrated novel is now in a second edition, with a new introduction by Vasudha Dalmia. It is a portrayal of social inequality that reflects the context in which it was written, during the rural upheavals of the 1920s and 1930s. An engaging introduction to north India before Independence, Godaan is at once village ethnography, moving human document, and insightful colonial history.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book.......2001-11-01

I thought this was an excellent book that helped construct a frame for me to begin to understand India. After travelling in the country recently, my memories of the book helped me put into perspective what I saw about the Indians, and the times I saw them taking advantage of each other. More importantly, the book described the search for dignity that people of all countries must share. It is a very complex country and I was glad I read this.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on a troubling question.......2003-12-11

The author Randall Milliken has done some excellent research to provide some answers to the question "Why did the San Francisco Bay Indians abandon their villages and join the missions?" Using the mission records along with historical diaries and reports, he documents the patterns of inter-marriage, languages, and histories of the tribes.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough, interesting, and enjoyable.......2000-08-02

For anyone interested in Bay Area Indian history, this book is a must-read. It's the only book I've found on the subject that looks comprehensively at the various tribelets in the Bay Area at the time of contact through the middle of the Mission period - very satisfying in its completeness. The one drawback is that the author's argument is not used to analyze a lot of the evidence. Most of the book is simply presented as facts, with only a few passages of analysis at the end of the chapters that tell you what the author makes of all the evidence. Otherwise it is a great read. I wish there more books like this one!

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, But Nothing Spectacular.......2007-06-29

"The Truth About Human Origins" dedicates the first 100 pages of the book to informing the reader about the fossil record in regards to human evolution. The authors discuss all the relevant fossils that are commonly used to advance the theory of human evolution, and show that there is no `chain' of fossils of human evolution.

The rest of the book deals with the insurmountable problem that evolutionists face in trying to account for the human consciousness. Unfortunately the author don't use their own expertise (PhD's in neurobiology and micro biology) to discuss the topics at hand, instead they do an extremely comprehensive survey of the literature to provide the reader with a book almost akin to a `quote book'. The reader will not find a page without at least two lengthy quotes, and for me this became somewhat frustrating. I was expecting the book to be filled with research data which would lead the reader to a conclusion. But instead what I found was that the book merely quoted scientists on what their thoughts were on the subject of the origin of human consciousness. Though it is very interesting to hear the candid confessions of evolutionary scientists, I found that 350 pages of scientists `thoughts' became quite dull and boring.

Though this book deals with all aspects of human consciousness, the origin of language and communication, the origin of the brain and mind, gender, sexual reproduction and the origin of skin and blood types, it does so in a `third hand' kind of way, and I feel as though the authors expertise and talents were thoroughly wasted.

"The Truth of Human Origins" has some good information and some parts (like the review of the fossil record) that are worth the read, I just wish the authors had `cut-the-fat' so that you didn't have to wade through all the dull, boring and unnecessary bits to get to the better parts.

5 out of 5 stars A scientifically unbiased as possible treatment of Human Origins.......2005-08-25

This text is one of a few which treats the subject of the evolutionary origins of man, the human, in the very complex and sophisticated factual manner that an honest scientific investigation should. The fact that the authors examine this subject in as objective a way as possible is refreshing indeed. Whereas most texts, whether from those who would manifest themselves as being of the scientific or religous elite on the matter of creationism versus evolution, would establish a bias in their analysis this book does not do this. The authors Dr. Brad Harrub, and Dr. Bert Thompson have wisely treated this subject with the objectivity to the facts in such a manner as to almost not need to use the words creation or evolution. You find yourself when reading this text with its depth of the historical as well as scientific analysis realizing that you can easily miss the use of these two inflammatory words and their deriviatives as they have normally become used in other texts on this subject. Dr. Harrub outlines very succinctly in the foreword the specific objectives to be addressed within their book. The authors' analyses do not deviate from their driven objectives to provide an unbiased treatment of the truths about the uniqueness of our human origin. If you are just interested in a short read (although it will probably not be quick) you may wish to begin with chapters seven and eight which deal with the analysis of the facts about the evolution of human consciousness and which treat a plethora of evidential opinions by other distinguish scientists and noble laureates. After a read of this text, you can be assured that you will have had an occasion to acquire a most enlightening new point of view on the matter of human evolutionary origins.
