1 out of 5 stars out of date and legally questionable........2007-05-06

This book may have been helpful in the past, but it really fails to address the legal pitfalls of using a wrap around mortgage with a due on sale clause, which is pretty much every mortgage written since the early 1980s. If someone transfers any interest without telling the bank, the whole mortgage could be called with 30 days notice. This might be ok if mortgage rates are falling, particularly if the buyer has good credit, but if that's the case, why wouldn't they want a new mortgage at a lower rate? If mortgage rates are rising, and the credit risks don't match current lending criteria (which is the case with lots of marginal borrowers when money is tightening), you could lose everything.

I realize Mr. Cook doesn't want to face litigation for giving specific advice, but its really quite pointless to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Love the new version.......2007-02-28

I bought the original version of this book back in late 1989. The title appealed to me and the concept really appealed to me; to be able to cash flow real estate and not have to worry about the three T's in real estate

Tenants

Toilets

Turnover

Most of the advice back in those days advised buying and holding real estate. I read one book where the author said he urned $1,000 into a million by buying and fixing up propteries and then holding on to those properties. I had a few problems with that theory. First of all, that book was written back in the 50's where $1,000 was more like $10,000 in modern times. I didn't have the cash to buy the number of properties that that author did to make that $1 million fortune.

Secondly, I am not very good with tools or in fix up. Like Robert Allen, I hardly know which end of the hammer to use. I hate painting. To hire people for fixup would have eaten into potential profits.

And finally, I wanted income NOW. I didn't want to have to wait 20-30 years for properties to appreciate.

And I really didn't want to have to deal with banks and traditional forms of lending. I ran some hypothetical deals through a local banker here in Orlando and also in Pennsylvania where I was from originally. I found that bankers are not friendly people to do business with and this form of lending would impede my goals.

Enter Wade Cook.

You don't "buy & hold" real estate, you buy and sell.

You don't go through banks, you are the bank.

You create notes that creates residual income for years and years.

You can do these deals with nothing down.

The buyers do the fix up, not me ( I liked that)

I won't even waste my time addressing the Wade Cook bashers. I'll just ignore them like everyone else. The only thing that I will mention though is that when I came back to this board I noticed an alert by Amazon that 82% of the people who come to this board for real estate books buy Real Estate Money Machine and less than 5% buy the books recommended by Wade's bashers. I guess that explains why Wade's bashers are so upset!

I started investing in real estate in 1992 using Wade's ideas and some other techniques as well. I was able to pick up a nice property in North Orlando and made a nice profit on my first deal. All without bank financing or real estate brokers.

Real Estate Money Machine is a great book. The new version has been revised and updated for the times and packed with powerful information. If your goal is to make money in real estate, then this book should be in your library or perhaps right next to your bedstand. My original copy was dog eared and literally fell apart so I bought the new one. Actually I would have bought it anyway because it is better than the original.

Wade gives some ideas for running ads. Actually the ad that I ran is in this book. It works.

In addition to Real Estate Money Machine, I also recommened Real Esate for Real People, How To Pick Up Foreclosures and 101 Ways to Buy Real Estate Without Cash, all by Wade Cook.

1 out of 5 stars Reader.......2006-04-01

If you're interested in flipping properties, don't waste your money on this book. The author is selling a dream. He leads you down a primrose path and makes you think you can get rich quickly and easily, i.e., no money down deals...that's pie in the sky. What percent of deals are no money down? Trust me, very, very few.

I've been successful financially with real estate investing for the past 8 years, both flipping and purchasing rental properties. It's a lucrative business, but just be aware that real estate investing tends to be more management intensive than other types of investments. And it requires some of your own money to buy--these are just the facts. I've never seen or been involved in a no money down transaction. I don't know of any easy or quick ways to real estate wealth, and the author makes it seem like you can cash in over night. He sounds like a late night TV pitch-man, interested in selling books and seminars rather than providing the reader with honest, reliable information.

If you're interested in flipping properties, read Kevin C. Myers' book, Buy It, Fix It, Sell It, Profit! If you're interested in rental property, I'd recommend Richard H. Jorgensen's book, The New No-Nonsense Landlord, Building Wealth with Rental Properties. Both of these books shoot straight with the reader and provide usable information that will increase your bank account, unlike the book reviewed here.

5 out of 5 stars More useful now than ever.......2004-09-10

Recent reports indicate that the huge growth and appreciation in real estate may be slowing or even over, like it was in the 80's.

The fact is you can always make money in real estate, you just have to change your strategy. In Real Estate Money Machine you will find methods and techniques to cash flow real estate and to make money in any market.

Real Estate Money Machine is ideal for anyone who wants to make money in real estate NOW rather than wait for years to gain appreciation.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful advice! Ignore paid bashers.......2004-07-11

As Wade is so fond of saying, "To Whom Are You Listening To?" To which I will add, do you want to listen to some paid bashers or to a millionaire like Wade Cook?

Wade was the first to tout lease purchases via his money machine concepts back in the 80's. His advice works. I know because I have used it.

This work is a serious analysis of the feminist movement and includes references to over 180 scholarly works. This is the best book I have read on critical insight humor. Unless one is familiar with this book (see also Patai & Koertge's Professing Feminism and C. Sommers Who Stole Feminism?) one cannot understand feminism. They are quantum leaps above other books on the subject. The authors are also refreshingly honest, critical and courageous in criticizing Women's Studies teaching in the University.

SNOOZE n. 1. The nicest moment of the day, between dreaming and waking, in a slumbering state of being. 2. Just one more push on the snooze button. 3. An exuberant exploration that couples the hallmarks of successful mass culture to the urban condition. What? Snooze, the book, is a visual essay produced by the young Rotterdam-based architectural practice Studio Sputnik. It purports to examine the ways in which architects can use mass culture. As any contemporary observer knows, mass culture is everywhere: it's a new network for mobile phones, it's a hip lifestyle magazine, it's a trendy brand of clothing. But until now, architecture and design have left the potential offered by mass culture virtually untouched. Snooze's lavish use of collages and diagrams based on flyers and advertisements makes for a mode of presentation directly related to the topic--but not style or form, commercial forces or technical ingenuity. Snooze is about popular experience and about hitching design to that experience.

I thought this book was very well done. The writer was very thorough with his directions. His explainations were great. I have tried to learn actionscripting for games in the past, bought a lot of books. But, this one has been the most helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners. Highly recommended.......2007-09-11

I bought about 4 books about getting started in flash and gaming, and this one was far and away the best. Great examples, step by step walkthroughs. I actually still use some of the examples as referece in creating new games.

Upon buying this book, I had dreamed of being able to write powerful flash games. Although I felt that there was more to be desired form the areas involving actionscript, overall I felt that that it delivered exactly what it promised; a strong introduction to flash game "programming."

It is perfect for beginner like me, just as title described. I enjoy reading this book and learn the concept of flash programming. The examples are straightforward and self-content. I am planning to write my first flash game with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Picked it up in a FLASH!.......2007-07-12

I'm a graphic designer by trade. I recently took on a school based apprentice who is doing a certificate in Multimedia. She had to cover certain "Flash" units, so I thought it beneficial to at least know a little bit about the program.

The book was easy to follow, clearly explained and well presented. It provided the ground work to getting around the interface as well as basic programming. I enjoyed working through the tutorials and hope to finish my very own BASIC flash game very soon.

                          Book Description

Queen Victoria's son, Prince Leopold, died from hemophilia, but no member of the royal family before his generation had suffered from the condition. Medically, there are only two possibilities: either one of Victoria's parents had a 1 in 50,000 random mutation, or Victoria was the illegitimate child of a hemophiliac man. However the hemophilia gene arose, it had a profound effect on history. Two of Victoria's daughters were silent carriers who passed the disease to the Spanish and Russian royal families. The disease played a role in the origin of the Spanish Civil War; and the tsarina's concern over her only son's hemophilia led to the entry of Rasputin into the royal household, contributing directly to the Russian revolution.

4 out of 5 stars Not much new on Victoria's family, but some interesting unsubstantiated speculations.......2005-07-31

I think I read this book for different reasons (and got different things out of it) than most of the previous reviewers. One of the first instances of "genetic genealogy" was the investigation into the roots of the hemophilia that plagued the czarevich Alexei of Russia, the only son of Nicholas II, who probably wouldn't have lived long enough to become czar even if the Bolsheviks hadn't liquidated the imperial family. But Victoria's son, Leopold, also died of complications of the disease, and it made its way into the Spanish royal family, as well. Where did the defective gene Victoria carried come from? There are only two medical possibilities: Either she was the victim of a random mutation -- one chance in about 50,000 -- or her father was hemophiliac. And since her father, Edward, Duke of Kent, did *not* have the disease, that would mean Victoria was illegitimate, the offspring of a hemophiliac lover of the Duchess of Kent. The duchess certainly *did* have a lover, and it's also possible, from all the evidence, that the duke was sterile. In which case, the throne should rightfully have gone to King William III's next closest relative, . . . and who would that have been? This is quite a fascinating detective story, investigating in considerable depth the private lives of the Coburgs, and it leaves one to wonder how the 19th century in Britain might have been different if Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and subsequently king of Hanover (a very distasteful individual by all accounts, and a very unpopular ruler), had become king of Great Britain. (His eldest living descendant in the male line today is Ernest Augustus, Prince of Hanover and present husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco.)

                          5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2002-09-10

This book was very interesting. It is a story of Genes. It tells the story about Queen Victoria and her family. Two of her daughters, Alice (As well as two daughters and a son), and Beatrice (as well as two sons and a daughter) were carriers of a disease called hemophilia and her son Leopold (As well as a daughter) had the disorder. One might wonder what the mystery is about it. Well it is this, where did the three children get the disorder? Because the daughters were carriers of it they could not have gotten it from there father Albert, so it must have been Victoria. One problem is that supposedly comes from one the most well documented families off all time (The family can trace there lineage to Adam and Eve) that leaves three posiblities-1. That she is not the Granddaughter of King George III 2. Her mother (Victoria of Sax-Coburg) was a carrier-which turned out to be false or 3. There was a spontaneous combustion of the egg or sperm that made Victoria. The authors get into all three of these hypotheses in order to try to understand just how Victoria got the gene for hemophilia. The authors also delve into the lives of the people who had hemophilia and tells about some of the pretenders to the thrones descendent from Queen Victoria and how with the knowledge of the gene people have figured out they are fakes.

4 out of 5 stars More about hemophilia and history than scandal.......2002-01-12

It's too bad so many reviewers and editors chose to focus on the small part of this book which questions Queen Victoria's legitimacy, because that's not really what this book is about. It's far more about how the interbreeding of British and other European royalty had profound consequences for world history. The bulk of the book traces the competitive sexual politics prior to Victoria's birth, and the way inbreeding among royalty contributed to the spread of the hemophilia gene, causing major world upheaval (in particular, to the fall of the Russian tsar). Much has been written of the privileges of 19th century royalty, but this book brings into sharper focus the way these royals' private behavior had public consequences. An interesting treatise on an aspect of history that is often overlooked: that many European wars were family conflicts extended to a grand scale.

3 out of 5 stars Should be called "The Influence of Prince Leopold".......2001-12-10

This book is really partly a discussion on how Victoria passed on a gene for Haemophilia and its immense influence on later European politics, but also hugely influential, and not included in the title, were the overweening ambitions of Leopold in the scheme of European Royalty.

Following his marriage to The heir to the English throne, Princess Charlotte, in 1817 I had thought he had faded out of existence, he was hardly a major player, so to speak, in the scheme of things then. I had forgotten his connection with Queen Victoria's mother, and it was again Leopold's influence which made Prince Albert, Victoria's husband - and then he really got workin on Europe for his relatives - even Brazil and Mexico got Leopold dynastic ambitions during their brief flirtations with the monarchy.

The first chapter is really an introduction of Leopold but it is mainly in this first part that the genetics of Queen Victoria are examined. Where did the gene for Haemophilia arise and why, after generations of pophyria in the royal family (traced back for hundreds of years) was there a sudden stop to this, and rise to a completely new genetic disease. I don't know that the authors really made their point. I thought the discussion was interesting but the conclusions were a bit tenuous. In the end there was no possible candidate for the male haemophiliac who could have been Victoria's father. It is all very well discussion all the possibilities of how a gene might transfer from generation to generation but it would have been more convincing if they could have really put up some candidates - or at least one viable candidate anyway.

The influence of the gene on later generations of European royalty was quite profound and I thought that was presented well by the book. I really enjoyed the chapter by chapter presentation of the gene's movements through other royal families in Europe as well as its still possible presence in the lesser branches of the Spanish Royal family. Each royal family or incident is presented as a single chapter and the ramifications are simply discussed. Certainly the guiding hand of Leopold on each succeeding generation is still very comprehensive.

I wish the authors had used more, or better Family trees though. There were an awful lot of names and relationships to follow and not all were even represented in a family tree at all. Also finding the family trees to refer back to them was pretty awkward at times as they were scattered through the book.

I don't know that this is really an academic book for those that are interested in royal watching. It doesn't present itself as well as it might. The conclusions are often very vague - if there are conclusions at all. However as a start point for a slightly different look at the influence of Victoria, and Leopold on European royalty it is definitely worth dipping in to. I probably would have given it 3 and a half stars rather than 3 given the choice, but it isn't a brilliant book - just interesting.

2 out of 5 stars A pedagogue in need of a ghost writer.......2001-10-13

Somewhat of a departure for Alan Sutton to include in their catalogues - they shine in the department of Gloucestershire regional books, but should at least have insisted on a very thorough editing job before 'Queen Victoria's Gene' was allowed to appear.
It is too bad that the wealth of historical detail in this book didn't come across in a more polished and less divergent presentation. One might even live with the air of 'refined prurience' typical of some British authors who when faced with the whiff of scandal seem to leer even as they hold their noses. But whether a desire to present all the information at his disposal or the pressure to get a product out made the text this difficult to wade through, mucky it is.
Inconsistent spellings of names and titles (how about three variants of 'Alexei' alone?), rambling and inaccurate presentation of some well known facts and obscured main points abound. This book resembles an unfinished masters' thesis in the history of medicine more than anything else, and I would have asked the author to resubmit it when he felt it was quite more ready to grade had I been his advisor. There is some good material here, but it is hard to see for all the distractions.

Robots in one form or another have engaged the popular imagination for centuries. Now, on the cusp of the 21st century, they are poised to saturate every aspect of our culture, from medicine, science, and industry to artworks, toys, and household appliances. Whether playing prominent roles in movies like I, Robot or helping mankind explore the surface of Mars, robots seem to be taking over the world. Robots is the first visual survey to focus on this increasingly important, always newsworthy scientific development and its effects on society.

Covering automatons, androids, and all manner of artificial intelligence, both fictional and real, this massive, comprehensive volume describes the robot's fascinating history and speculates on its probable future. Interviews with scientists, surgeons, manufacturers, science fiction writers, artists, toy creators, and a host of other experts bring tremendous insight to the subject, and the copious illustrations provide visual examples of robots in every environment imaginable. As entertaining as it is informative, this one-of-a-kind book is an indispensable guide to the rapidly approaching Robot Age. AUTHOR BIO: Daniel Ichbiah is a writer, journalist, and musician. Man's quest to replicate living beings goes back thousands of years. Today, there is a 21st century robot with a mobile body complete with intricate computer software, making it "act" rationally. The "thinking android" of our century has evolved through many stages. For years, we've seen robots in movies, science fiction, and on television. I loved R2D2 and C3PO in the first 'Stars Wars' feature.

Robots don't ever have feelings. They do what they are programmed for and nothing else. Only twice, in the movies, have any robots neared human emotions, the "star" of R.O.B.O.T.S and the 'dear family robot' in the movie, 'Centennial Man' played by Robin Williams. The clones in the movie, 'The Island,' were programmed to be robots, but some actually became human with needs and feelings of man.

The Planetary Society's second attempt to place a solar sail into Earth orbit failed when the Volna boostre's first stage misfired shortly after launch from a submarine in the Barents Sea. In a previous attempt in 2001, the Cosmos 1 solar sail did not separate from the booster's third stage. The Society had hoped to make the first controlled flight of a solar sail, which is probelled by only the faint pressure of photons on its eight reflective triangular blades. Such vehicles, a type of robot, are predicted to eventually achieve speeds five times as great as those achieved by a chemical-powered rocket.

In Lille, France, the European Capital of Culture, is a 'fetus to man' sculpture. It has a life-sized metal clock-jack. The human figure, or jack, are the hands on the clock; fetus in the womb at 6:00, erect as an adult at 12:00, old age at 6:00 as he bends under the weight of the years. A fantastic thing to see. The photos in this book are "out of this world."

Back in 1993, my year of temp. jobs on computers, I kept promoting my ability to work 'robotics.' The only talking robot I'd ever seen in person was at Knoxville's 1982 World's Fair, so I know very little about them. And yet, I constantly spoke of being able to control robots, thinking I could get a better job. In our small town and the lawnmower/bicycle factory where I had my last job, robotics were primitive and the operator punched a few buttons for them to perform the more intricate jobs the Japanese do by hand. We're not that technical in America so most every job was done by hand. I was 'accurate but not fast' at data entry and our boss from Memphis, Steve (whose ancestor was an infamous criminal in the Old West), assured me that my accuracy was more important than the enormous errors made by the faster temp staff. He said, when the job was completed, "When iI return, I expect Betty to own a robot factory." Actually, he was back in a few months and said he was glad that I was the one sent to help his crew organize a new computer accounting system for that same factory, Gabriel. I heard him telling others that he was going to hire a full-time person, but he didn't get around to asking me, so I moved on to the fated job in the office at Murray Ohio which did me in. He'd asked me once, "Are we having fun yet?" and I had to shake my head. It was hard work and I lost faith in my ability.

Robotic prosthetics are becoming sophiscated and look and function better than the biological body part. Several movies have been made about and containing robots in addition to 'Star Wars' and '2001 A Space Oddyssey' (Hal), 'Short Circuit' had Johnny 5, and 'Artificial Intelligence' had David. In the 1965 t.v. series, 'Lost in Space' had Dr. Zachary Smith as did the 1998 movie of the same name.

Robots are the future, but they will never take the place of humans, as it takes man (or woman) to make them work properly.

Since the first industrial robot was introduced less than 50 years ago, robot development has progressed in significant pace. Hence, robots are gradualy populated in different aspect of our everyday life in recent years. This book provides a comprehensive introduction of the history of robot development, current state-of-the-art, and a glimpse into the future of robots. The entire book is divided into 12 major sections covering: robot history, robots in fiction (TV, movies, literatures, etc), humanoid robots, domestic service robots, industrial robots, exploratory robots, security robots, medical robotics, toy robots, robotic arts, future directions of robot development, and a practical reference guide for robot enthusiasts. For each topic, the author provides many example systems with heavy illustrations and very readable text. In between the description of different robotic systems, the author also provides interviews of roboticists in the sideboxes. Most importantly, the content is up-to-date till 2004. People from different level of background in robotics will all find the book useful and enjoyable to read.

RESCUE NATURE, RESCUE OURSELVES Author's Note: Rescue Nature, Rescue Ourselves - The writing of this book has called me away from my professional fields of Shakespeare and the Greek Classics.

I earnestly hope that you too will set aside your normal preoccupations for a few hours a week to engage in a Good Cause to Rescue Nature. Part I: “The Way Things are Now

                                      in our Nature-destroying

Self-destroying world” Part II: “What Exactly We Can Do About It” The book, in its first part, seeks to educate people to the destructive processes assailing our Natural World (and necessarily us). The second part specifies what each of us as individuals may do in spare time to rescue Nature and rescue Ourselves, body and soul. An international Rescue Nature campaign is urged, based on the above. An introductory chapter recounts the documented event of a horde of sharks attacking a school of dolphins. The dolphins guided the young ones to the side of a passing ship, then males and females turned to face the sharks. This amazing, tragic, and inspiring struggle provides the guiding metaphor of our book - dolphins versus sharks, and the choice every human being intentionally or unintentionally makes to aid the one or the other. An important theme in this book: It is every person's moral responsibility to protect the weak.
