Book Description
As the seventh hardcover edition in the impressive SpiritArchives collection, this masterpiece features the work of some of thepioneers of the comic world. With the war in Europe still waging, theSunday strips from July 4 - December 26, 1943 had the Spirit focusing hisattention to homegrown homefront problems. Returning to his crimefightingroots, the Spirit must help Ellen Dolan when she is framed for a dancemarathon murder, prove his own innocence when he becomes the prime suspectfor a prominent businessman's death, catch a shipyard saboteur, thwart akidnapping by a couple of femme fatales, and confront a murderous ex-conliving on a construction site.
Customer Reviews:
The Spirit of WWII.......2006-02-22
This volume of the Spirit Archives covers July to December, 1943. Will Eisner was in the Army at the time, so the comic was written and drawn by other people. It was a decent adventure strip during this time period, but not nearly as good as when Eisner was doing the strip himself.
A return to roots for The Spirit.......2004-11-13
Basically The Spirit is a crime fighting hero who uses ingenuity and physical skill, rather than super powers, to defeat evil. He is witty likeable and politically incorrect. The comic pioneered many layout techniques and so many super heros are modeled after The Spirit. The story lines and comics hold up even now more than 60 years later and I recommend for comic book fans to try out the series.
Volume 7 of The Spirit Archives contains reprints of comics written from July 4 - December 26, 1943. During this time Eisner was still absent (he had been drafted). In Volume 7 The Spirit returns to his roots. Rather than fight Nazis he focuses more on the home front. He must save love-interest Ellen Dolan when when she is framed for a murder. As in the first volume The Spirit is himself framed for a murder and must evade the police as he fights crime. Also in a return to roots The Spirit is up against femme fatale villains in a kidnapping story.
Purists will complain that The Spirit was better with Eisner in charge. These comics still hold up. On the other hand I would recommend this for die hard fans only. If you are new to the series then try out any one of Volume 1-4 or 12 or higher. Will Eisner (after whom the Eisner Award was named) had creative control of those volumes so they are more historically significant. I recommend Volume 7 along with the rest of the series to libraries, because this is a unique opportunity to archive the entire run of a very influential comic.
The Spirit Archives Series.......2004-04-04
Will Eisner is the only comic book artist to ever have his work shown in a museum of art. His most important work is the Spirit. The Spirit Archives series has brought together all of his work, that was printed in a weekly newspaper insert. However, after the work found in volumes 1 and 2, Eisner was called to active duty and served in the army during World War II. The Spirit carried on, but it was drawn by other artists. Eisner's work does not pick up again until the stories found in Volume 12 of the Archives series. The work in Volumes 3-11 is fine, but it is not the work of Will Eisner.

WARNING!.......2006-01-22
Many of the reviews for this volume (released 12/05) are actually for OTHER, volume sin the series. This book is part of the classic run of post war SPIRIT stories, as are v12 - 16. This is the best of the best, so dig in!
I have written to AMAZON to ask them to change the Spirit Archive review sections, and hopefully they will get around to it soon!
Spirit Archives, Volume 5.......2005-12-14
This book covers The Spirit Sunday comic strip from July, 1942 to December, 1942. Spirit creator Will Eisner had been inducted into the Army in May of 1942, so he didn't draw any of the comics here. He managed to contribute a few scripts, but not too many. Scripts were written by Manly Wade Wellman, Alfred Bester, William Woolfolk and possibly others. Most of the artwork was handled by Lou Fine, who was no Will Eisner, but was a great artist in his own right. While this is not the best of The Spirit, it was still one of the best "masked crimefighter" comics of the time period.
Eisner Returns.......2004-12-15
The Spirit is a crime fighting hero who uses ingenuity and physical skill, rather than super powers, to defeat evil. He is witty likeable and politically incorrect. The comic pioneered many layout techniques and so many super heros are modeled after The Spirit. The story lines and comics hold up even now more than 60 years later and I recommend for comic book fans to try out the series.
I recommend this series to all comics fans, although not necessarily this volume. The Spirit was very influential and the stories are still good to read now. I recommend this series to libraries, because this is a unique opportunity to archive the entire run of a very influential comic.
Great promise of things to come.......2004-04-16
I thoroughly recommend this book to Spirit fans, but not necessarily as the ideal introduction to the Great Spirit.
This volume is The Spirit's springtime.
"The Spirit" at his greatest was characterised by excellent stories, well paced, superb viewer angles in the art-work, and wonderful tension built by the ambiguity in the relationships between the Spirit and the regular characters.
In this volume the stories are good, and the pacing and the angles are developing. The cast of characters is only in its infancy.
The masterpieces are yet to come in future volumes.
Not the work of Eisner, but includes some of the BEST!!!.......2004-04-10
Eisner contributed only plots and some loose layouts to the stories in this volume, but some of the strips still rank among the best Spirit stories. Now, the OVERALL quality of the strip isn't as good as the post-war Eisner years, but certain individual ones are as good as it gets.
A particular highlight is the Spirit's first encounter with Diana, the huntress who stalks him like a beast. It won't ruin you enjoyment of the story to tell you it's hilarious when the Spirit SPANKS her and sends her off crying. Not exactly politically correct. Heh.

not worth it, forget about it!.......2006-02-23
Scratch items are in the back, and you have to perforate the "smells" and find the appropriate photo, and then try find a place to try to put it on the photo. With all of the scratch items together, they all have the same bad smell! This is not a guide, but a bunch of black and white postcards.
Kitschy Fun.......2002-01-30
This book is now a collector's item because of the picture of the World Trade Center. Buy it quickly. The images were nice, but the scratch and sniff stickers make the book. Everyone can smell and see the beautiful city. I think the place is much nicer after the reign of Rudy Guilliani, but it still smells in more than a few places. This book celebrates the real New York.
Smells Great, errr, smells exactly like what you want........2000-08-03
Some of us send postcards with pretty pictures to their friends. Others think that there's something a bit cloying with the whole routine. This book is for the others. There are a bunch of picture postcards of New York with average photos, but they come with scratch-and-sniff additions so you get the full effect. Sure, the Fulton Street Fish market looks picturesque, but smelling it makes it a bit better
Very, very smelly.......1999-08-27
Beware of the strong smells here. You may want to open the book outside, and beware of the smell sticking to your fingers, you won't get it off. Other than that, this is a fun book, but perhaps these postcards are too stinky. I pity the postal worker that has to deliver them.

A good review of Amazons.......2002-03-07
Hmmm, an Amazon review concerning Amazons. ;->
Anyways, this book feels a lot of gaps for those who like playing Amazons; a curious gap that has plagued D&D since forever, even thro Amazons are a very common fantasy race. WIth specific magics for Amazons, as well as story arcs introducing amazons to your campaign, this is a book long needed.

Best Step By Step Book for Access 2003 Beginners.......2007-01-06
As a business application user I started studying Access 2003 using a book titled "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Office Access 2003 in 24 Hours"; by Alison Balter. That book has a more conceptual approach and I felt I was taking too long to learn the fundamental steps of how to build a database with limited previous exposure to Access 2003. This book was very user friendly with less geek-speak and more graphics to show you how to achieve your database objectives in Access 2003. If you complete the exercises and then the challenge problems at the end of each chapter you'll quickly be the Access 2003 expert in a business administration setting. I highly recommend it for business application users before any another text book on Access 2003!

Good balance between theory and practice.......2006-03-13
This book provides a good balance between the mathematical theoretical foundations and the implementation of wavelet algorithms. The chapter of time-frequency analysis is specially relevant, and very hard to find in other books about the topic. The only miss is about more practical implementations of the algorithms.
Reference for implementation of transform algorithms.......2003-09-05
This is the only book i know that is focused on implementation aspects of numerical transforms. It explains quite well the practical issues that are rarely touched in digital signal processing and wavelet textbooks. It spans fourier transforms, cosine, wavelets,... It is rather self-contained, if you have problems with maths you can skip chapter one, other chapters should be quite readable by every science grad student. Be aware that this is not a transform textbook, so you should first learn a few things about numerical transforms, wavelets and subband coding before getting into this one (go to Oppenheim and Schafer for DSP, Vetterli for subband coding). A good textbook for a course on numerical transforms implementation.
*Creating* wavelets!.......2002-10-05
This is where to learn about wavelet packets, and what they can do.-- Where to learn the programming techniques that are especially adapted to wavelet algorithms, and which have proved their worth. The book actually tells you how to write a program;-- it motivates, and explains the elements step by step. It also gives the background, and offers a beautiful presentation of the essentials. It is selfcontained and a pleasure to read. It has the algorithmic approach to the discrete wavelet transform;--a topic that is hard to find elsewhere,-- at least in a systematic presentation.
not the easiest one around but well describing algorithms.......1997-01-08
This book gave me a rather hard start with very dry and short
theoretical introduction but the algorithmical/discrete
part is well done and allows for implementation of most of
the work where many details emerge ... I was missing
solutions for the exercises though
