New and wondrous dishes for the cook who's cooked it all
Customer Reviews:
Yum, yum!.......2007-01-04
It is nice to see food photographers taking a poke at their own industry. In our "image is everything" society, it is particularly encouraging to see that there are some in the eye-candy trade daring enough to peel off the wrapper and let us see their technique applied to less savory subjects. Anyone for a batburger?
An exquisitely photographed appitite inducing volume........1999-07-08
This is truely a unique book. Surely Martha Stewart must have been channelling the spirit of Granny Clampett to produce these unusual delicacies. Had detailed recipes been included a full 5 stars would have been earned.
Fine food pardody makes you wince & laugh at the same time........1997-10-01
We've all seen examples of fine food photography in recipe books, magazine articles and advertisements. Here is a book done by a couple of the experts in the field who poke fun at both themselves and at the rest of us who have come to expect photos of food to be mouth-watering and appealing on a very basic level. But wait until you see the mouse-kabobs with your own eyes! The images make you gape in bemused shock at these exquisitely-photographed "food" items -- that is until you notice that some of them resemble road kill! A wonderful parody on how we look at things in the modern world.

Book Description
Examines the impact of the Scottish legacy on North American cultures and heritage.
During the past four decades, growing interest in North Americans' cultural and ancestral ties to Scotland has produced hundreds of new Scottish clan and heritage societies. Well over 300 Scottish Highland games and gatherings annually take place across the U.S. and Canada.
Transatlantic Scots is a multidisciplinary collection that studies the regional organization and varied expressions of the Scottish Heritage movement in the Canadian Maritimes, the Great Lakes, New England, and the American South. From diverse perspectives, authorities in their fields consider the modeling of a Scottish identity that distances heritage celebrants from prevalent visions of whiteness. Considering both hyphenated Scots who celebrate centuries-old transmission of Scottish traditions and those for whom claiming or re-claiming a Scottish identity is recent and voluntary, this book also examines how diaspora themes and Highland imagery repeatedly surface in regional public celebrations and how traditions are continually reinvented through the accumulation of myths. The underlying theoretical message is that ethnicity and heritage survive because of the flexibility of history and tradition.
This work is a lasting contribution to the study of ethnicity and identity, the renegotiation of history and cultural memory into heritage, and the public performance and creation of tradition.
Celeste Ray is Associate Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. She is the author of Highland Heritage: Scottish Americans in the American South and editor of Southern Heritage on Display: Public Ritual and Ethnic Diversity within Southern Regionalism.

Customer Reviews:
Wrong platform.......2006-04-15
I have the XP version of "The Bard's Tale" on CD ROM. This guide is for the PS2/Xbox version. It's a completely different game.
Excellent strategy guide!.......2005-09-11
The Official Strategy Guide plays to the same snarky theme as The Bard's Tale game does. It's sarcastic, witty, very thorough and well-written.
The main part of the guide is a walk-through of the game, with maps of ALL areas, info on enemies encountered in each area, and full explanations of the way your choices affect the game. Also included in the appendixes are information on the various enemies and what "goodies" they drop when you kill them, info on all the weapons and armor in the game, and info on the tokens, artifacts, and tunes you acquire. There's a quick interview with the game's creators and a couple of pages about the original Bard's Tale PC games.
All around, it's a great guide, very easy to follow and set up logically. Well worth the low price!
The extras to this guide make this guide EXTRA special.......2005-01-30
As a fan of Prima for a long time, I was surprised how this guide did not have Prima's logo emblazoned on the top front cover. It looked more like a sacred tome than than a guide. I knew this guide was going to be special, so for only the third time in my life, I bought the guide before buying the game (Grandia II and Legend of Zelda Oracles of Seasons were the others!!!). It had all the great features that you'd expect from an Official Prima guide and helped me beat the game. But, what set it apart is how the writing of the guide complimented the writing in the game; both made me laugh. There were also interesting facts interspersed throughout...one of the few times I felt smarter from reading a strategy guide. Now, if there were just a strategy guide for current events...
Don't forget to check out the "know your ales" section at the end.
Honestly, the best strategy guide I ever read -- EVER!.......2005-01-30
This guide has really imprinted on my mind why Prima guides are the best. Seriously, this is the best written and most attractively designed and layed out strategy guide I have ever read.
I'm glad they didn't waste time including a lot of ridiculous extras, such as a world map, that every cookie-cutter guide throws in, but which don't really add anything in the context of a game. In this game, for example, a world map would have been a complete and ridiculous waste of time. Instead, this guide includes rich and textures features that are actually RELEVANT to the game! The lay out is fantastic, cream of the crop. The writing is crisp and clever, I absolutely loved it.
This guide actually made me more excited about owning and playing this game. This guide doesn't just supplement the game, it complements it.
I have read A LOT of strategy guides. I think with this edition, Prima pulls out ahead. I look forward to many more efforts with this great team of editors and craftsmen that it must have taken to put this book together.
My highest accolades, Prima.
Slightly flawed, but worthwhile.......2004-11-15
Prima's guides have saved me many a headache during a difficult portion of a game. That having been said, I was slightly disappointed with this guide. Several pieces of information were inacurate. I'm not sure if this is due to the fluid nature of the game or not enough product testing. A world map would have also been helpful. On the other hand, if you're stuck in The Bard's Tale, this guide is a worthwhile purchase.

Book Description
Sir Peter Medawar was not only a Nobel prize-winning immunologist but also a wonderful writer about science and scientists. Described by the Washington Post as a `genuinely brilliant popularizer' of science, his essays are remarkable for their clarity and wit. This entertaining selection presents the very best of his writing with a new Foreword by Stephen Jay Gould, one of his greatest admirers. The wide range of subjects include Howard Florey and penicillin, J. B. S. Haldane, whom he describes as a `with-knobs-on variant of us all', and, in the title essay, scientific fraud involving laboratory mice. There is Medawar's defence of James Watson against the storm of criticism that greeted the publication of The Double Helix. A merciless debunker of myths, he reveals the nonsense to be discovered in psychoanalytic interpretations of Darwin's illness and launches devastating attacks on Arthur Koestler, IQ psychologists, and, most notably, Teilhard de Chardin. He raises questions about the nature of scientific endeavour - he famously defined science as the art of the soluble - and a common theme is his desire to communicate the importance of science to the widest possible audience.
Customer Reviews:
Stroke of genius and other ironies.......2007-03-04
In his introduction (written in 1996), Stephen Jay Gould calls Peter Medawar "our century's greatest spokesman for the power and humanity of science." Certainly, he should rank near the top, but Medawar has never been as popular as some others.
It may be that his fearsomely sharp tongue frightens people. We think, If Medawar can be so scathing about (insert famous name), what might he say about us? Well, we're safe now. He died in 1987.
Or perhaps he is not romantic enough for us.
As an example of the first: "Disputants so naïve should abstain from public controversy."
Of the second: "There is poetry in science but also a lot of bookkeeping."
This collection includes some of Medawar's most famous essays and debunkings, including his evisceration of psychoanalysis; "Is the Scientific Paper a Fraud?"; and his review of Teilhard's "Phenomenon of Man," which exposed a lot of prominent and self-important people -- many of them editors of powerful publications -- to be fools.
Little wonder people were careful around Medawar.
However, he had a mild side. To me, "The question of the existence of God" is the least satisfactory. Medawar did not believe in a god, but he was (uncharacteristically, some might think) inclined to be somewhat wistful about those who did. One would have expected him to have brought them to book for their crimes.
Another reason Medawar's collections of essays may not have worn so well is that many were written for an occasion (often as a book review), which led him to restate his firm positions, such as that there is no such thing as a "scientific method." True, and it very much bears repeating to each new generation. But it does not bear repeating in the same volume so well.
It is too bad Medawar (a very busy man who won a Nobel for his research and was a director of important laboratories besides) never wrote a magnum opus. The collection of essays in "Pluto's Republic" is probably his most popular and solid. The essays in "The Strange Case of the Spotted Mice" do not hang together so well, although anyone who got to know Medawar through "Republic" will want to meet the man in person in "Son of Stroke" and "On living a bit longer," products of his long period of physical debility.
Medawar was among the first to expose the vapidity of Lacan and Foucault -- though in brief fashion -- and this is so surprising coming from an active scientist, who one would have thought had little time to be plowing through turgid tomes of dubious French "scholarship." But he was always interested in what C.P. Snow called "the two cultures," and he was not shy about lampooning the fatuities of overeducated scientific illiterates: "If a scientist were to cut his ear off, no one would take it as evidence of a heightened sensibility."
He died before the global warming hoax took hold, but he identified one of its vectors when he wrote "reporters want clear stories without the cagey reservations scientists are always introducing." Well, they used to do, but Medawar lived in a more careful age.
Surprisingly, toward the end of his life he was so incautious as to make predictions, four positive ones and one negative one.
"I roundly declare that within the next 10 years remedies will be found for multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes and at least two forms of cancer at present considered somewhat intractable" and "the doctrine of genetic elitism . . . is not thought likely . . . (to) ever again become a major factor in the causation of wars on a global scale."
He was mostly wrong, and, given that he was half-Arab, surprisingly so about that last one.

Book Description
At a time when human numbers and technological power pose major threats to life on this planet, the need to live with restraint and respect for other life forms and natural ecosystems is increasingly recognized. This bibliography documents the evolution of wilderness consciousness in the United States from a period when the wilderness was simply a resource to be managed and exploited to the more recent development of an environmental ethic, together with scientific concerns for the preservation of essential ecosystems and levels of biodiversity. The definition of "wilderness" in the Wilderness Act of 1964 has been modified in this work to take account of both earlier attitudes and the scientific developments and philosophical issues that have surfaced in the past two and a half decades. The bibliography covers more than 300 contributions to the wilderness debate, many of which are not treated elsewhere. Lengthy annotations serve as a review of the literature as a whole and provide information on writers, content, themes, and important passages for each entry. The compiler has included such diverse literary materials as poetry, fiction, and nature writing as well as history and philosophy, scientific research, and works advocating particular wilderness uses and policies. Offering easy access to a rich and varied literature, this bibliography will be an important reference for activists, educators, researchers, and policymakers.
