The book I recommend for learning HTML.......2006-10-29

When I am asked the question, "I want to learn programming, were should I begin?" my response is always, "learn HTML." While some people will legitimately argue that HTML is not true programming, it is easy to learn and the results are visual and immediate. The skills learned in the study of HTML are fundamental to more advanced programming and the ease of learning gives the beginner immediate and clear success.
This book is the easiest way to learn HTML that I have ever seen. With the illustrations all in full color, it is the epitome of What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG). Every step is set out in clear detail and all of the most commonly used features of HTML are covered. From this point on I will recommend it as my preferred first book in HTML.

Started recently with showing interest in the HTML language. It became clear that in the huge amount of books covering this subject, I was keen on getting something simple, easy to understand and a very handy reference guide. I belive that with this book, it cannot be made any simpler!! Even for non IT minded persons.

The book covers all, from starting a web page, building CCS, what and how JavaScript is working (did not had a clue what it was) up to special features that can make your web-site just that more interesting.
Even now, as a reference guide, it is just what I needed.

The visually part of it - if somebody is not known with the "Teach yourself visually" series - is so clear, the results are showing.
Later I have bought the Dreamweaver MX 2004 from the same series. Even though Dreamweaver is pretty clear in itself, I still come back to this book for some handy tips and how to do.

Worthwile? I do think so!

Great for beginners to intermediate users. Clear instructions, great color graphics, simple but fundamental instructions, powerful in its simplicity. Mouth-wateringly good! Grab this.

One star is too much!.......2005-11-01

Following the advice of the others on this page I duly purchased this book. I can now safely say it will be my LAST time following the general concensus! What is WITH you people?
A photographer/grafik designer by trade, specialising in print-based media I have never done web-based work (other than actually designing pages and buttons in Illustrator - and then having someone else doing the converting, assembly etc.) so I decided to buy a book and have a go. To get straight to the point this book is a piece of crap for the following reasons. 1) (despite professing otherwise) It is totally incoherent, and follows a very illogical progression pattern. 2) The grafiks are so sadly outdated and amateur-ish I cringed every time I opened the book. 3) It fails to empower the reader to move freely and thus visualise their own ideas. 4) It is VERY incomprehensive. 5) It is very hard to navigate, has no real index, no thumb tags etc.
It is like a 'Big Mac' - it looks yummy and filling and when you take a bite it SEEMS to fill you up, but soon you are hungry for more REAL FOOD. My advice? Go for a less disturbingly 'visual' format that provides you with the building blocks to build your own house.

The Only Book You Need!.......2005-05-09

Although I consider myself fairly computer savvy, I know absolutely nothing about webpage development. Until now. With this book, I was able to create professional looking webpages in literally, minutes. This is my first and only book I've purchased about creating webpages. I can't say that other books aren't as useful, but I can say, that this step-by-step approach, is fool-proof. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in creating webpages, with little or no prior knowledge of webpage development.

Classifier systems play a major role in machine learning and knowledge-based systems, and Ross Quinlan's work on ID3 and C4.5 is widely acknowledged to have made some of the most significant contributions to their development. This book is a complete guide to the C4.5 system as implemented in C for the UNIX environment. It contains a comprehensive guide to the system's use , the source code (about 8,800 lines), and implementation notes. The source code and sample datasets are also available for download (see below).

C4.5 starts with large sets of cases belonging to known classes. The cases, described by any mixture of nominal and numeric properties, are scrutinized for patterns that allow the classes to be reliably discriminated. These patterns are then expressed as models, in the form of decision trees or sets of if-then rules, that can be used to classify new cases, with emphasis on making the models understandable as well as accurate. The system has been applied successfully to tasks involving tens of thousands of cases described by hundreds of properties. The book starts from simple core learning methods and shows how they can be elaborated and extended to deal with typical problems such as missing data and over hitting. Advantages and disadvantages of the C4.5 approach are discussed and illustrated with several case studies.

This book and software should be of interest to developers of classification-based intelligent systems and to students in machine learning and expert systems courses.

Classical book - a bit pricy.......2006-02-27

This a very classical macihne learning book. The presentation of the material is very lucid. Dr. Quinlan is a great writer. However I would say that the book is a bit pricy. More than half of the book is C4.5 code. I personally would have liked more of the theory part. Also an updated edition with C5.0 algorithm will be very much welcome from the readers. I am not sure whether Dr. Quinlan has a book on C5.0 or is the enhancements over C4.5 are completely proprietory.

Overall, it is a good book to learn about the C4.5 algorithm.

Good Book to understand about decision tree construction........2005-09-27

The Book is very simple but more informative to understand about the C5.0 algorithm. It has less number of pages to read but covers all the topics from decision tree construction to rule induction. I recommend the book to readers who want to understand about the C4.5 algorithm.

The most clear work on Decision Trees available !.......1999-05-04

If you want to get introduced to Decision Trees algorithms, you must read this book. Ross Quinlan is the father of 'C 4.5' the most widely used tree algorithm. Most other algorithms (except for Chaid, which is older) are enhancements to C4.5 If you are from marketing, this is not a book for you. Why didn't you include a disk instead of so much source code pages, Ross ?

A different book on wild life...........1999-10-23

Wild Edens. Africa's Premier Game Parks and Their Wildlife, by Joseph James Shomon

It was our pleasant experience to read an extraordinary book! Although lacking in graphics, we do consider this one much richer in content than the more familiar, photo-laden publications covering this subject.

Wild Edens has a very well written, interesting and varied text. The author combines skill with expert knowledge in different areas, i.e., ecology, geography, history and zoology, giving the reader a complete picture of these most important African National Parks. In Appendix 1, a short essay about David Livingstone and his pioneering disclosure of central Africa, is well worth reading.

Appendix 2, with its complete list of the parks, gives very useful information to readers planning to be visitors.

An outstanding description of the killing of a buffalo by a pack of hyenas in Aberdares Park is most impressive (Chapter 3). The reader feels strong sensations while witnessing the "cruelty" of the natural world and the tense relations between hunters and the hunted, in nature's domain.

Because this is a book of major interest and value, we find it unusual to discover a gross mistake...The legend of the colour photograph depicting a zebra and two baboons at Jane Goodall's camp near Lake Tanganika (see colour photographs next to pg. 80, with a similar photo on the back cover). It reads: "Zebra and chimpanzees"... It is clear that the photographed monkeys are not chimps (Pan Troglodites), but baboons (Papio Cynocephalus). Zebras and baboons have the same habitat, ` savanna', while, typically, chimpanzees live in a forest. It would be rare for the two breeds, zebra and chimp, to meet in the wild ... their habitats being so positively different. How an error such as this could have been overlooked by such a competent author is disconcerting. However, this oversight certainly does not, in any other way, jeopardize the special value of a "different" book on wild life.
