Smart Trust Deed Investment in California.......1997-12-28

For the person who is interested in really learning how to invest in Trust Deeds, this is without a doubt the best guide you will ever find. George Coats' coverage of this subject is very thourough and complete. I have been investing in trust deeds for some years, and luckely found this book shortly after it was written. It has been my bible ever since. The laws may be somewhat different in other states, but the principals and guidelines he provides are wonderfull. This book has helped me to avoid may pitfalls in making private loans. Required reading for anyone interested in this subject.

An Invaluable Resource.......2002-10-21

If, like me, you love Westerns and have cable, this is a book you need to own. Its detailed synopses and reviews have helped me over and over again in deciding what previously-unknown movie to set the timer for. Each capsule-essay includes year of release, run time, director, major stars, and some information about the story, with brief critical remarks. The many bw photographs, though rather small, are just so much gravy. You can also just sit down with it and start going through the listings so you can compose a Wish List! With this book and Fenin & Everson's "The Western," you have a good basic foundation in Western-film criticism and history.

A very enjoyable reference book.......2001-11-16

More than a dry listing of what westerns came out in what year, The Overlook Encyclopedia is actually fun to read.

The book begins in the 1930s (so no silent Westerns)and lists the Westerns that came out each year, giving a brief plot synopsis and then an evaulation.

The value of the book is that it shows the reader how many Westerns Hollywood made and when production rose and fell off. Also, the comments on the individual films are interesting and can point the reader in the direction of some films he might not otherwise have heard of.

The book concludes with several "ten best Western" lists from different film critics. Overall, a useful book for anyone interested in this genre.

. . . in or out of AD&D. I say that because, although I don't DM anymore, I still use this book. The title is a bit deceiving-- although it's useful for creating villains, it can be used equally well for creating any sort of NPC, and almost as well for creating characters in any other role-playing system or none at all! This book takes characters off the paper and into flesh with a helpful system and ideas for creating backgrounds, motives, resources available, organizations, and abilities. One of the most useful guides for a DM.

Good for ANY Gaming system.......2000-01-16

This book is useful for a GM in ANY system. Like the "Campaign Sourcebook and Catacomb Guide," it provides methods useful in any campaign, in any RPG. It focuses on designing villains who are memorable, engaging, and realistic. And it does a *very* good job of teaching you how to do so.

If you want a campaign with villains that just suck your players right in and get them seriously wanting to take on the villain for his own evil rather than the rewards they can get, you should buy this book.

I found myself using this book over and over again in order to gain interesting hints on how to flesh out believable villains and other bogies. It gives clear, readily usable, and concise tactics of creation of everything starting with the antagonists and finishing with their dinner habits. Can be used in any system.

I would have to agree with the posts listed before mine. It is a great book because it makes creating memorable villains that much easier, they can be whipped out spurr of the moment if thats what it takes. There has been many a time that I have underestimated how resourcfull my players would be and I would have to throw another enemy or two just to even things out a bit. But anyways, this book has helped me out quite a bit and every DM should own one( if you can get you hands on it that is.)

Good Book Illustrator CS for Dummies.......2006-05-31

I have found that this book is a great place for a beginner or someone trying to improve on their graphic abilities to start. This book can be a very good tool to help review and remind you of some thing that my have slipped your mind. If you need to rate this book on the 5 star scale then I would give it a 4 ý. The reason it fails for the full 5 stars is that it only had a few full color pages(16) and in some small areas, it is hard to find some things it asked you to process. You have to changed a few things (setup view), then they are where they say they are. One more little bit of info, if you are looking to buy this software and use this book, buy the book only and download the try me version of the "Illustrator CS". This way if you don't like the software then your only out the cost of the book.

If you're interested in Illustrator, this is the way to learn it. You'll laugh your way through it, and you'll be amazed how the foreign language of Illustrator can be so easy to understand.

Pretty Good Book.......2005-11-25

My favorite part of this book is where the author, with mountains of experience, says PC's are faster than Macs for graphics. It's about time somebody pointed it out. Notice how many people who give it poor ratings are those who worship at the altar of Mac.

This is a good book for beginner to intermediate, which is about where Dummies books are aimed, right? There may be better (more expensive) stuff, but I'm not sorry I picked this one up.

On the other hand, the criticisms here about lack of visual examples is a vaild one. There are examples, but a book about the premiere artist/illustrating software should be crammed with them.

A Good Place To Begin.......2004-08-20

I am a complete novice to any drawing software. So when I bought Adobe Illustrator CS and listened to the accompanying "training" tape, I knew I had to have a lot more instruction. I have found that most software manuals are like dictionaries--fine if you already have a good idea of what you're looking for, but not if you don't. So usually a great place to start is a "good" Dummies book. This Dummies book is better than most. It is written in a clear, concise manner with instructions on how to accomplish each feature covered in the chapters. If a simple earlier instruction is needed in a later chapter, it is repeated instead of referred to from the earlier chapter. This saves a lot of time flipping back and forth. And I appreaciated Ted Alspach's humorous approach to topics--at least the first time around. If you have to go back and re-read, it just gets in the way. The only drawback to the book is that it needs either an accompanying CD filled with Illustrator graphics for practice or an Internet source for such vector graphics. Often the instructions say, "Select a piece of artwork..." and I'm left struggling to find a decent example.

I don't know if the problem is in the content of the book, or in the translation, but the book was almost incomprehensible. Unfortunately, I don't speak French, so I can't read the original and compare them, but I suspect it is the translation, which appeared a bit stilted and unnatural (similar to translations of Frederick Bastiat's The Law, or Pierre Boulle's Planet of the Apes, both of which were oddly worded, although easily readable, and Bastiat wrote more than 150 years ago).

Maybe the translator didn't quite understand the topic, or have a conversational grasp of the English language, either of which would make translating difficult. I almost picked up my Strunk & White's Elements of Style to review their readability formula just to quantify how dense this book was, but restrained myself.

To the reviewers I read before buying this book, now I understand why a number of them wrote things like, "you have to be able to sit back and ponder the book, savoring the words before digesting them." I took this as a sign that there were deep meanings that mesmerized the reader, and looked forward to it. No. To translate that phrase into common English, it means, "the translator has an Oxford English Dictionary and he's going to use it."

I don't get why this is the bible of architects. Its boring as hell. Sure people are affected by the spaces they inhabit for various conditioning reasons. OK thats obvious but do I need to read a whole book written in pompous philospeak to learn that.

Honestly I put it down half way. Too boring and too many other things to read. Life is short.

An inspirational analysis.......2006-12-17

This book is hardly new, but Bachelard's analysis of the psychology of space remains as fascinating and lyrical as when it was first published. I've recommended this book to artists and sculptors and students over the years, and they in turn recomend it to others. Bachelard went on to write a book on the poetics of reverie and the "psychoanalysis of fire" but his book on space remains the most readable and the most genuinely poetic.

This is a philosophy book about house written by a poet, reflecting his views, and other's, on the importance and vital organism that is shelter. If you love word that conjures thought...and love home (whatever that means for you) I believe you will savor this book.

The present volume has as its primary aim readings, from a feminist perspective, of a number of works from Russian literature published over the period in which the 'woman question' rose to the fore and reached its peak. In Repressed Spaces Paul Carter tours the cultural history of agoraphobia, the fear of open space. Its symptoms were first described in The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) by Robert Burton, the British scholar and writer, although it wasn’t until 1871 that Carl Otto Westphal coined the term to describe several of his patients who experienced severe anxiety when walking through streets or squares. There have been many attempts to explain and treat the condition: critics of modernization have linked it to bad city planning; psychoanalysts, calling it "street panic", have blamed it on the Oedipus complex; psychiatrists have tied it to existential insecurity and describe it as the fear of places or situations that have triggered panic attacks. Freud believed that agoraphobia, like all phobias, was part of an "anxiety neurosis" and had a sexual origin.Taking as his starting-point the fact that Freud himself was agoraphobic, and analyzing the way people have negotiated open spaces from Greek and Roman times to the present day, Paul Carter finds that "space fear" ultimately results from the inhibition of movement. Along the way, the author asks why Freud repressed his agoraphobia, and examines literature, the work of architects and theorists – including Le Corbusier, Walter Benjamin and R. D. Laing – artists such as Munch, Lapique and Giacometti, and the German "street films" of the 1920s. He concludes by proposing a new way of regarding open space, a new "poetics of agoraphobia", one that is sensitive to the agoraphobe’s point of view and provides lessons for architects and urban planners today.

This book is concerned with the literary development of the narrative category of space in Russian literature from Romanticism until Modernism. It consists of two parts. The theoretical introduction renders a survey of some major 20-th century theories on literary development in the tradition of Russian Formalism and Czech Structuralism. A critical discussion is given of the cultural and stylistic typologies of the soviet scholar D. Lichacev and the semiotician I. Smirnov. Furthermore, the ideas on literary space, as they were developed by two important representatives of the Moscow-Tartu School of Semiotics, Ju.Lotman and V.Toporov, are described together with the method of literary analysis they offer.
The contents of the second part of the book are analyses of the structure of space in the following narrative works: "Mcyri" by M.Ju. Lermontov, "Nevskij prospekt" by N.V. Gogol, Oblomov by I.A. Goncarov, "V tolpe" by F. Sologub and Kotlovan by A. Platonov. The analyses are accompanied by an interpretation of the story based on the spatial details in the text.
It appears that both continuity and change characterize the development of literary space. This two-fold nature of the evolutionary proces comes to the fore through recurrence of spatial archetypes in all the periods under discussion and through ambivalence of meaning as a result of the semiotization of literary space in each literary work.
