Absolutely hilarious.......1999-10-23
Whether you enjoyed Barbies as a child or not, Strohmeyer's text will have you laughing out loud in a room full of strangers. A combination of feminism, politics, and plastic toys may sound odd, but Strohmeyer pulls it together in a very entertaining fashion (no pun intended).
Hilariously satirical and refreshingly iconoclastic!.......1998-08-24
Hilarious! Sara Strohmeyer has taken satire to a new level. By subverting the fictious doll into something unthinkable (a REAL woman) we understand the dialectical struggle between the dolls already accepted image as a sexist and mysoginst doll and what would happen if she thought about and dealt with real issues. Strohmeyer's parodies are intelligent and insightful as we should question the garbage that mainstream media i.e. "Cosmopollution Magazine" throws up in the face of consumeritis.
Like Barbie, but need a laugh, then you have to read this!.......1998-05-08
So your child has Dr. Barbie, Dentist Barbie, Anthropologist Barbie and Equestrian Barbie, but does she have PMS Barbie, and Junkie Barbie? Collecting her is great, but sometimes that perfect plastic body can get annoying and you dream about her being "one of us". Well, the author has put your imagination to words and pictures for everyone to enjoy! She keeps you laughing and saying "Now that's one doll I have to get!"
If You Hate Barbie, You'll Love this book.......1998-04-28
Since I don't have a quarrel with Mattel's Barbie, I only found this book mildly amusing.
The best part of this cynical take off and put down on Barbie, are the photographs of the doll in various unusual settings and costumings--such as "Welfare Queen Barbie", and "Hot Flash Barbie", as well as some looks at historical Barbie's such as "Barbie Curie" and "Groovin' Gravity Gallileo Barbie", to name a few.
There are approximately 27 take-offs of different characters Barbie could be, along with an interview with Barbie, and an epilogue entitled "What if Barbie were one of us."
While I agree Barbie is thinner and leggier than a normal woman would be, I don't tend to take this very seriously. She is, after all, only a doll.
The invention of Barbie, unfortunately, came too late for me. I do think it good that Mattel has widened the scope of "careers" and "interests" for their Barbie doll.
I've never quite understood how popular icons such as Barbie become objects of venom. However, if Barbie is on that list for you, then you should greatly enjoy this book.
The book was a bit unclear to me in their layout for each of their Barbie subjects, but no less clear than is Barbie herself. As I've never understood why the doll keeps being re-created always with the name Barbie but with a different descriptive name infront of the Barbie.
Barbie Unbound is great!.......1997-10-26
Barbie Unboud: A Parody of the Barbie Obsession, is the actual name of the book. In it, Barbie is placed in 40 contemporary and historical situations - Barbie d'Arc, PMS Barbie, Barbie at the Salem Witch Trials, Teenage Pregnant Barbie, etc. The photos are great and the text, which is written as a tongue-in-cheek play guide, is really biting. Great satire on Barbie, her always cheerful smile, that impossible body, all those accessories and the ridiculous idea that all women will grow up pink, pretty and perky. Buy it, it's what you've been waiting for.

Book Description
In today's society, more and more mass media and popular culture is being produced for, about, and by pre-adolescent and adolescent girls than ever before. The intent of this book is to help us better understand the complex relationship between girls and their culture. Informed by a broad range of theoretical perspectives and employing a variety of methodologies, the essays in this collection address the ways that mainstream culture "instructs" girls on how to become a woman-the ways in which the culture approves of "growing up girls." Specifically, these essays examine the messages mainstream culture gives girls about romance, sexuality, life experiences, body image, gender and culture identity, and the way girls themselves negotiate these messages.

Then and Now.......2005-07-10
As the title suggests, this compilation of essays and conversations (between or about mothers and daughters, for example) examines the lives and experiences of adolescent girls at the crossroads of popular culture and the construction of identity. The texts chosen by the editors, Sharon R. Mazzarella and Norma Odom Pecora, are diverse and fairly interesting. While not all chapters might appeal to the reader, there is enough in this text to make it worth purchasing (although it is overpriced for a 228 page anthology). In addition to reading about popular culture and its influence on girls and young women today, this book is also full of historical facts and information; this combination makes the collection especially valuable in that an important component of analyzing the present (in this case, girls and popular culture) is to think about it in relation to the ideologies and influences of the past. Due to the wide array of voices and topics, this book is not overly-academic in tone or purpose nor is it redundant in its scope. A must read for anyone in the field of Women's Studies, Gender Studies, or Media Studies. It is my hope that the "Adolescent Cultures, School, & Society" series will offer a new or revised edition of this 1999 title.
How the media influences our girls' sense of self........2002-04-17
This collection offers a variety of compelling essays, all exploring how pop culture is shaping American girls. These writers succeed in providing an evocative overview of the complex ways in which girls respond to the world around them, and how they see themselves within it.
As all parents know, girls are unpredictably diverse, and so the authors' analyses won't apply to every girl in America. But I'd argue that this is one of the rare cases in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts: Each essay is unique and self-contained, but taken altogether, they speak volumes about the state of girls today and the dire need for social change.
Perticularly noteworthy are:
- an essay written by mother and daughter together, exploring what Barbie represents;
- an essay on reactions to Disney's "Pocahontas," based on focus group interviews with three groups of adolescent girls: whites, reservation-based Native Americans, and city-based Native Americans;
- and an essay about the phenomenon of girl bands and the liberation teenage girls experience when they play "male" instruments, like guitars.
Read this book -- you'll learn a lot!
Growing up girls.......2002-01-13
I belong to a family of four, and myself and my wife are the parents of two girls who are about to enter the teen age. I have to say that the book has been a real disappointment for, according to my opinion, only incidentally does it address any real-life issue we as a family encounter today with our girls or are indirectly exposed to through the experience of friends who are parenting as well. I believe there is a excessive stress in explaining female life or what revolves around it with sexist theories of society.I consider our family a rather open family culture-wise having had the opportunity of living in different countries, including the US for almost two years in a very traditional american mid-west town of 30,000 people.
Growing Up Girls: Popular Culture and the Construction of Id.......2000-09-27
Mazzarella and Odom have chosen a diverse and exciting selection of topivcs and writers. This collection is both high interest and academically challenging. As a teacher, I recommend this book for high school and college level students.
Product Description
Beyond the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere lies the untamed Periphery. Filled with young souls seeking adventure and freedom, the Periphery is a watershed for every stripe of humanity. This diversity has spawned powerful Inner Sphere-like political coalitions, roving pirates, one-world lesser powers and bandit kingdoms striving for legitimacy. Wild, uncivilized and deadly, the Periphery is a turbulent frontier where any warrior who dares can be king. BattleTech Field Manual: Periphery describes the various factions that make up the Periphery: Magistracy of Canopus, Taurian Concordat, Marian Hegemony, Outworlds Alliance, Circinus Federation, the Lesser Periphery States, Bandit Kingdoms and the Deep Periphery. This sourcebook describes the history, military doctrine, traditions and tactics of each Periphery faction, plus special rules that reflect the exclusive capabilities of each Periphery regiment, as well as new weapons and 'Mechs unique to the Periphery.
Customer Reviews:
Good Idea, but a disappointment!!!.......2005-01-28
I am a longtime Battletech fan, and own most Technical Readouts and Field Manuals. Most had some flaws, but at least had a lot of new material. This is not the case with The Periphery. There are a lot of spelling errors to begin with, secondly the quality of the book binding is terrible. After opening the book the first time, the pages started to loosen and fall out. Thirdly,WizKids simply recycled most material without updating the data from previous Sourcebooks. Finaly, most of the artwork came from earlier books. The only good part is that it portrays the Hanseatic League and Castellan Principalities. Unfortunately, many other organization barely toched in previous Sourcebooks were omitted. A sad end overall, for a great series of books.

Completly AMAZING.......2005-12-09
I don`t speak a lot english and i was so scare to buy it because this guy is brithis but i saw some reviews and took the risk. when i got the book we can resume in one ward i was just surprised, it is completly amazing, i dont know for one else but for me this guy that`s really knows how to explain the difficult world of 3D, Thanks Peter Draper I've already found the key to my goal "this Book"
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.......2005-09-20
There is a reason why the used books are priced the same as the new for this item. This is an essential buy. Beginners should try get their hands on something a little easier first, but everyone with even a little bit of experience needs to get this book. Whereas many books leave you with a feeling of being "rushed" or of not being properly thought out, this one leaves you with an impression of having every single tiny detail meticulously planned. The DVD even includes video tutorials that didn't fit in the pages of the book! And the author has a website for the book and users that have problems with the tutorials. And guess what? He actually visits the website and offers help! wow! what a concept!
The tutorials themselves are brilliantly planned. First, we get reference footage, that is analyzed in order to get the best effect. Then, Draper goes through each step, and EXPLAINS EXACTLY WHAT WAS DONE AND WHY IN EACH STEP. This is vital and is sadly overlooked in many tutorials from other sources.
What will he teach you? Exactly what the book promises: extremely realistic water, earth, air, and fire. This is done mostly through the powerful new particle flow system and multi-layer materials (I mean MULTI-MULTI-MULTI-layer materials here). After only a few tutorials, I my skills with procedural materials and particle flow increased exponentially.
An essential buy.
Best 3Ds Max book purchase.......2005-09-07
Most books out there are rehashes of the help documentation or popular tutorials already out there. For this book, however, almost every single tutorial covered tricks and techniques that I've never been exposed to before in my years of working with 3D Studio. Definitely an eye-opener for anyone who wants to learn how to create any sort of realistic environmental effect.
This is one book that is a must-have.
One of the very few 3D books worth your money.......2005-04-07
Most 3D books are unimpressive to me-- the sorts of things that could be readily learned by reading the manual or help files (particularly in the case of 3D Studio, which has excellent help and tutorials.)
Pete Draper's book is one of the happy exceptions-- it extends one's knowledge and capabilities, and moreover, his work is excellent; these are images and animations that would get you a job, if you could make them.
Would that there were more books of this calibre!
Awesome...simply awesome.......2005-03-11
I have had this book for about 2 months now and all I can say is wow. This book has really been helpful...extremley helpful I must say. Easy to follow, the tutorials ALL work....Pete draper expresses all aspects of each tutorial and explains the WHY factor in each step in his tutorials. I cannot praise this book high enough. It has solved a lot of underlying problems that most would use plugins to work around. I give this book a 100% feedback....and I really hope he launches another...I will definatley buy the next one.

Book Description
The story of New York's feisty Conservative Party is really the saga of America's tumultuous political maturity. Born in response to the rise of Nelson Rockefeller's liberal Republicanism, the New York's Conservative Party has grown to become the nation's most successful third party. It has also turned out to be its political conscience.
The Conservative Party's founders understood that their mission was primarily to keep the Republicans honest; to ensure that there was room in New York's GOP for conservatives and conservatism. They knew this meant that some Republican candidates who sought the Conservative endorsement might flourish and others who shunned it might founder, and this is exactly what happened. But throughout its forty-year history, the Party has stuck to its principles as much as it has played politics.
In vivid and often amusing detail, Mr. Marlin gives us an insider's view of:
*The derailing of Rockefeller's presidential freight train.
*William F. Buckley Jr.'s race for mayor of New York City in 1965.
*The Conservative Party's battles with John Lindsay in the late Sixties.
*The senatorial victory of Conservative James Buckley in 1970.
*The Conservative response to New York City's fiscal crisis.
*The Party's love-hate relationship with Rudy Giuliani. Fighting the Good Fight confirms Ronald Reagan's observation that "The Conservative Party has established itself as a preeminent force in New York politics and an important part of our political history."
Customer Reviews:
Conservatively Speaking....A Great Read.......2004-09-16
"Fighting The Good Fight: A History of the New York Conservative Party" is an outstanding account of the New York State Conservative Party which was founded in 1962 as a counterpart to the decades-old Liberal Party. The book is written by George Marlin, a long-time player in Republican Party and Conservative Party circles in New York. Marlin ran for mayor of New York City on the Conservative Party line in 1993 when Rudy Giuliani defeated David Dinkins (he got 1% of the vote).
In New York State, cross-party endorsements are permitted in tabulating election returns: this enables candidates from the two major parties to accumulate additional votes on smaller party lines. This gives parties like the Conservative Party important leverage, since their philosophical strengths can be translated into votes on Election Day that can reward or punish politicians (usually Republican) who veer too far off course. The New York State Conservative Party also holds the distinction of electing one of its own, James Buckley (William's F.'s brother), to the United States Senate in 1970, defeating both the Republican and Democratic nominees in a three-way race. Prior to the formation of the Conservative Party in 1962, both the Democrats AND Republicans running statewide and locally courted the Liberal Party line and endorsement. It was this influence on the GOP by the state Liberal Party and New York's liberal establishment that so infuriated local conservatives, who were fed up with the big spending policies of Nelson Rockefeller and later, John Lindsay.
Marlin's book is a fascinating grassroots look at the Conservative Party from an individual who was one of the young foot soldiers in the late 1960's (you can read about Marlin literally getting "roughed up" while working on William F. Buckley's campaign to unseat Mayor John Lindsay in 1965). The book has meticulous detail and recollection of specific events, times, and places. Marlin liberally (!) quotes from many Conservative Party veterans and current members, including Mike Long, the current chairman of the party. The result is an in-depth look not only at the building and evolution of a small band of committed, principled individuals looking to "make their mark" but also a very good historical review of New York State politics from the 1950's onward.
Marlin's background as an investment banker and finance professional is clearly evident when discussing the many budgetary gimmicks and debt-accumulating policies that both New York City and New York State have engaged in these many decades. Whereas New York City had its baptism of fire in the fiscal crisis of 1975, the state government -- with larger resources (read: tax revenues) at its command -- has been able to delay and postpone the day of reckoning. Judging by the recent political fiscal mismanagement up in Albany, it appears that New York State -- like California in 2003 -- may finally be about hit the brick wall like her largest city did three decades earlier.
"Fighting The Good Fight" excels in a way that other books on the conservative movement do not. Marlin spends less time discussing philosophy and the national conservative movement than he does in paying attention to the Little Guys (and Gals) who made the New York State Conservative Party what it is today. In every chapter it seems like Marlin has gone out of his way to mention some loyal party volunteers who ran for office to keep the Conservative line active in some off-year elections, or volunteers who spent long hours working on nominating petitions, or locals who lent the party funds to meet expenses. Unlike the state Liberal Party, which could count on well-heeled financial and political elites to generously drop money into their lap, the Conservative Party had to rely mostly on small contributions from many people at the grassroots. Only in later years did the Conservative Party have any benefactors of any great social or financial standing, and even then they paled in comparison to the resources that their opponents could bank on.
Along with "Actions Speak Louder" by J. Daniel Mahoney (one of the 1962 founders of the New York State Conservative Party) and "The Unmaking Of A Mayor" by William F. Buckley, this is one of the must-read books in the trilogy of New York State conservative politics. Those books are important, but since they stop in the 1960's, to get a multi-decade look at the Conservative Party and New York State politics, "Fighting The Good Fight" is essential reading. If you are not a Republican or conservative, it will still offer an interesting and fascinating look at decades of New York State politics, and in particular, the fiscal follies and budget gimmicks that have plagued New York (both the city and state).
In 1962, when the Conservative Party was formed, New York State had the largest population in the country. It had the largest electoral base for presidential elections. Ten years later, California surpassed New York in population. Today, Texas and Florida have surpassed New York, which is down to 4th overall in the rankings. The loss of power and prestige for a state whose population has not grown at all in four decades is frightening. If New York City and New York State are to reverse the voting done by citizen's feet, they would do well to listen to the political prescriptions offered by George Marlin and the New York State Conservative Party.
Window on New York Politics over 40 Years.......2002-09-29
While this new work has obvious resonance for persons of a Conservative political persusion, its appeal should transcend the National Review readership.
George Marlin -- best known as the Conservative alternative to Giuliani and Dinkins in 1993 -- presents a fascinating chronicle of the unexpected rise of the Conservative movement in one of the nation's most avowedly liberal states. In the process, he provides an engaging -- albeit uni-dimensional -- history of New York politics over the past 40 years.
Marlin's book -- in concert with other political works on the period -- will help future generations to understand Conservatives' formidable electoral clout in the second half of the 20th Century, even in formerly liberal, urban bastions in the Northeast. A standout work in this genre is Samuel G. Freeman's "The Inheritance," published about six years ago (though regrettably out of print the last time I checked).
I did downgrade Marlin's book by one notch because of a higher-than-acceptable quotient of typographical errors, especially disappointing for a Christian Brothers-educated scholar. (Full disclosure: Marlin and I share a college alma mater.)
Book Description
Sovereignty Matters investigates the multiple perspectives that exist within indigenous communities regarding the significance of sovereignty as a category of intellectual, political, and cultural work. Much scholarship to date has treated sovereignty in geographical and political matters solely in terms of relationships between indigenous groups and their colonial states or with a bias toward American contexts. This groundbreaking anthology of essays by indigenous peoples from the Americas and the Pacific offers multiple perspectives on the significance of sovereignty.
The noted Mohawk scholar Taiaiake Alfred provides a landmark essay on the philosophical foundations of sovereignty and the need for the decolonization of indigenous thinking about governance. Other essays explore the role of sovereignty in fueling cultural memory, theories of history and change, spiritual connections to the land, language revitalization, and repatriation efforts. These topics are examined in varied yet related contexts of indigenous struggles for self-determination, including those of the Chamorro of Guam, the Taíno of Puerto Rico, the Quechua of the Andes, the Mäori of New Zealand (Aotearoa), the Samoan Islanders, and the Kanaka Maoli and the Makah of the United States. Several essays also consider the politics of identity and identification.
Sovereignty Matters emphasizes the relatedness of indigenous peoples' experiences of genocide, dispossession, and assimilation as well as the multiplicity of indigenous political and cultural agendas and perspectives regarding sovereignty.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, an collection of Indigenous writings on sovereignty.......2006-01-15
Evo Morales is elected the first Ingigenous president of Bolivia and the Indigenous people's movement of Mexico is on the march. Around the world activists and movement intellectuals have been making history by moving Indigenous peoples' struggles to the forefront of grass-roots politics. Accompanying these developments has been a lively and challenging discussion about Sovereignty in relationship to the Nationstate, global capital, cultural production, feminism and sexuality, eco-politics and so on. English-speaking activists and movement intellectuals can now access the currents of those discussions thanks to this anthology. Bringing together writings from North America, New Zealand/Aotearoa, Puerto Rico. Samoa, etc, this book is an excellent crash course in the terms of the debates around Sovereignty. Given the recent currency Sovereignty has received thanks to struggles in Latin America as well as recent writings by philosophers like Virno, Negri and Balibar, here's a book that offers an approach to Sovereignty from the perspective of Indigenous activists and scholars themselves. This book couldn't have come at a better time!

Book Description
In an age when human depredation has severely damaged the earth and the delicate balance of life thereon, the task of poets writing about nature has become vastly more complex, fraught with the sometimes conflicting demands of aesthetics and of political and ethical responsibilities unimagined by their Romantic predecessors. In Greening the Lyre, David W. Gilcrest offers a richly insightful analysis of contemporary environmental poetry informed by a keen knowledge of psychology, linguistics, epistemology, rhetoric, and recent literary theory.
If one of the roles of poetry is to make life better and understanding more profound, how is the poet to discuss the natural world in the face of environmental devastation and extraordinary rates of extinction? How can art alter the path of a culture bent on destruction? Using careful analyses of works by A. R. Ammons, Wallace Stevens, Adrienne Rich, Charles Wright, Robert Frost, and others as the foundation of his discussion, Gilcrest examines both the power of poetry to help humanity re-envision its relationship to the nonhuman world and its limitations in achieving this awesome role.
Greening the Lyre is literary criticism at its most relevant, exploring the borderland between art and politics, between aesthetics and survival. Ultimately, Gilcrest suggests, a "skeptical environmental poetics" must develop an awareness of an evolving world that lies beyond the grasp of language, an understanding that language alone cannot fully define what is most precious in the world of wilderness, the ineluctable mystery of all living things.
