Book Description
Ciress is a world that runs on magic, and those with the most magic run the world. Genevieve Villard was in line to become a great leader, but during her Rite of Ascension something went horribly wrong. Her sister Giselle, a flibbertigibbet society girl, was conferred not only the power that was rightly Genevieve's but that of every other Guild Master on Ciress. Now Giselle must come to terms with being the magical protector of her entire planet - if the Guild Masters let her live that long. The second volume of Mystic introduces Animora, a demon queen brought back to life in a dubious scheme of the Guild Masters to regain their powers. They swiftly learn what it is to make a deal with a devil, as Animora double-crosses the Guild Masters and threatens to enslave all Ciress. Only the power of Giselle`s mysterious sigil and the combined wisdom of the Guild Spirits can stop Animora`s evil. PUBCOMMENTS Ron Marz has been writing comics since 1990, giving up a journalism career when he found that it was more fun to make up the stories. In those years, he has written extensively for publishers including DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, and Acclaim. You've read his work in the pages of Superboy, Silver Surfer, Star Wars Tales, StormWatch, X-O Manowar, DC vs. Marvel, the Amalgam title Dr. Strangefate, and most notably Green Lantern. He brought his skills and voracious fans with him to CrossGen, where he writes the titles Scion, Sojourn, The Path, and Crossgen Chronicles. Ron received a Harvey Awards nomination as Best Writer in 2002 for his work on Scion, which was also nominated for Best Continuing Series.

Another fine TPB in the mystic series.......2003-12-25
This is the second TPB (Trade Paper Back) combining issues 8 through 14 of Crossgen's Mystic Series.
The story is if anything stronger than the first voulme as we get an explaination of several previously introduced but mysterious characters. The production values are excellent with great color reproduction. The art is beautiful, the beautiful women are gorgeous, the monsters are truely monstrous.
The plot for this arc revolves around the guild masters who have lost their sign of legitimacy, the ancient guild spirits, and are desperate to not lose political power. Nearly maddened by the fear they hatch a plot to release the most horrible threat the planet of Ciress has ever faced and then betrayer her again. It's a plan of absolute madness...obviously there are going to be problems. (In fact they will still be trying to clean them up in volume 3; but this is still a nicely selfcontained story arc.)
A 5-star book with a place of honor on my shelves.

A good concept, but dry at times.......1999-07-17
I read a review of this book and it sounded interesting, so eventually I bought it. The idea seemed good - study the community of physicists as a subculture of its own. And this book has its moments. Unfortunately, it was a bit too dry for my tastes. Traweek's habit of not giving names to the people she talks about and referring to everything in incredibly generic terms can be very irritating. I assume that this is some sort of anthropological or ethnographic practice - however, I'm not sure if this book should have been cast so heavily in the scholarly mode of anthropology. Parts of this book I skipped over because it seemed too dry. However, it's interesting to hear about the distinctions between the different kinds of physicists, the educational system that they were taught in, and the like. Looking back, I probably should not have read this book in one sitting, short as it is. Maybe my attention span just isn't long enough. But it still offers some interesting insights.
High energy physics: deconstruction of a non-culture.......1999-02-20
Beamtimes and Lifetimes by Sharon Traweek is an unusual book which documents the specific norms, values, and physical aspects of the high energy physics community in Japan and the U.S. One of the main strengths of this book is its comprehensive study on why physics is not a gender-neutral, unbiased, and totally objective science. Traweek exposes the fact that science is not the an individual endeavor devoid of human experience, biases, and human nature. By systematically, documenting the community and the ethos that the physcists adhere to, the reader walks away with the fact that physics like many other sciences are results of human interepretation - a construct of knowledge that is organized, affected, and generated by concerns of collaboration, funding, competition, gender biases, and culture. Although parts of this book may be pretty dry for the non- scholar and people are simply not interested, there are pivotal and salient paragraphs in Beamtimes and Lifetimes that show that science isn't objective and neutral as it seems. It is worth reading and non-scientists and scientists alike. Read carefully and don't plow through it!
From NKV.......1999-02-15
If the relation between science and society, nature and human, interests you, this is a book you should read. The author, who majors in anthropology, tries to examine high-energy physics community in the light of anthropology. As far as I know, anthropologists have hardly written any book about physics, physicists' community. As you will see, this book is different from the books that are usually written by physicist. The books, that physicists write, require more physical and mathematical background. But such prerequisites are not required at all in this book. Rather, this book requires the information about community, that is, anthropology. In prologue, the author explains the motivation of beginning this fieldwork, the relation between high-energy physics and war, the method of analyzing physicist community, and the landmark emerged in constructing an account of physicists' culture. First of all, the method of analysis through anthropology is the thing that this book is different from usual books about physicists. The author says that the account written as an outcome of anthropological fieldwork usually includes information about four domains of community life. They run as follows: ecology, social organization, the developmental cycle, cosmology: the group's system of knowledge, skills, and beliefs, what is valued and what is denigrated. As this method, she develops his argument until epilogue. In chapter1, she, who was partly employed to conduct public tours of Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC), introduce SLAC and KEK in Japan, as if we tour through SLAC, KEK. In ch2, detectors, which is probably the most important tool observing nature, is revealed. There are many differences between detectors at SLAC (ESA, LASS, and SPEAR) and those at KEK. She does proficiently explain "why are detectors at SLAC and those at KEK different?" In the next chapter, she turns from the detectors to their makers who have different strategies for making research equipment. This chapter is entitled "Pilgrim's Progress: Male Tales Told during a Life in Physics". If you are concerned with physics, considering to major in physics, you are strongly recommended to read chapter. The life of physicist is divided by 4 stages: undergraduate student, graduate, postdoctoral physicist, and established physicist. The author does minutely explain the psychological state, required qualifications, in each stage. Until this chapter, the author has introduced the actors in the high-energy community but from now, she will describe their activities. Ch.4 entitled "Ground states: Distinctions and the Ties that Bind" explain networks of physicists, ranking of institutions, distinctions between experimentalist and theorist, women and men, etc... In this chapter, the author try to show the relationship that bind physicist community, she consider it to be highly fixed relation through talking, not writing. In last chapter, physicists, who try to maintain stability, negotiate with one another for resources, and change themselves in the front of knowledge. As deeply as this book probes into the anthropological details of high-energy physics community, it disappoints in being constrained to honor a typical theory of anthropology. "I have explored a theory originally formulated by Durkheim and...."[P.157]. The author did certainly succeed in analyzing high-energy physics community in the light of Durkheim's theory, but she failed in creating her unique view. Sometimes, she tries to vaguely show her opinion. The question of "whether electrons exist of not?" is translated into a less abrupt form to her "where do the social categories of physicist and physics community and physics culture exist?"[p.162]. On the other hand, it is likely that she has a prominent insight into detectors. "The relationship between scientist and nature is at its most intimate and physical in the detectors"[p.158]. "The detectors in the end are the key informants of this study; physicist and nature meet in the detector, where knowledge and passion are one" [p.17]. It is reasonable that she regards the detectors as the outcomes of physicists' culture and science policy of governments, etc.... But, it is a little drowzy...not clear...

Flypaper Trash Ball.......2003-03-13
Icky Poo is a not just a toy, it is a tool. It has helped unleash the kid in me. Nothing brings more joy into my life than my Icky Poo and my wife. Two essential items to a great relationship. I remember many years ago learning Fly Paper Trash Ball, a game that will reach your inner feelings. My buddy, Cory, and I went in together and bought an Icky Poo Pack. We each got a paddle. Wow, was that fun. I remeber many times running around and around the dorms, in hopes to land an Icky Poo on Cory's Face. What a joy to me. I love Icky Poo.
Great toy, Great little book.......2000-10-21
I bought my Icky Poo in a pack with 2 paddle ropes - the icky poo - and the book. I was 12 at the time and I am now 15, and I looked this up because I lost one paddle rope and the other snapped recently after 3 years of faithful service. The icky poo is just so much fun, even for one so mature as myself. (?)It's like a big, thick, sticky elastic band with a flat head at one end which sticks to paper and adds weight for zapping and zinging. Techniques for these and and other activities based on them are provided in the short book, which is exceptionally funny considering it is supposedly aimed at 6 to 8 year olds and is essentially an instruction manual. It's an entertaining read, anyway, but the games themselves aren't all workable. There are some gems such as paper bag banzai and lunch table poo, but you'd probably be just as well playing with a friend and seeing what games you come up with spontaneously. I can only fault this product by asking what were they thinking when they decided to include only one paddle rope with this edition. You will need 2 for any decent games. and eventually they will lose their "ick" (although you can wash them) and get lost and snapped and suffer the inevitable wear and tear that any good toy does. So why aren't they sold seperately?
I love this Icky Poo Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-02-02
This book is great for all Icky Poo lovers it comes with a free icky poo toy and it has all the fun facts that you have ever wannted to know about icky poo. I first got my Icky Poo bookm when i was 12 and i have loved icky poo ever since. I dont know what id do without my icky poo. Sure it may sound like a sick title, buyt really once you see the icky poo youll love it so much youll never forget it. If icky poo was never made id probaby die. I think that they should make more and more of them and never stop because one just simply iusnt enough. So please please buy this book it will be a memory youwill cherish forever. You will also crave icky poo just like me when i got my first one. This sticky paddle is the best ever in the whole wide world. So please dont fret buy the icky icky poo poo

Book Description
You want to make an animated film. You've got the idea. You've got Macromedia Flash. But where do you start? What's the best way to script your cartoon, how do you start animating with Flash, what do you really need to know in order to get your ideas out there, and make you famous? Who better to ask than two talented professionals, who've not only worked for Disney, but also run the hugely successful cult website - funnyazhell? Kevin Peaty and Glenn Kirkpatrick draw on their many years of studio experience and their knowledge of Flash to show you the best way to create great Flash cartoons that look as good as traditional animated films. This book follows the professional process, taking a creative idea from storyboard stage, through layout to publishing, via a detailed look at animation techniques, that will give you the kind of insight normally only gained from years spent in the industry. In depth and detailed, the book follows the production of a cartoon from inception to final output - looking at all the decisions and skills that have contributed to its appeal. Whether you're completely new to Flash, or are making your first steps into the world of Flash cartooning, this book will let you work alongside the professionals to make your own animated masterpiece. From the Publisher The book uses downloadable Flash files so that you can build your own movie, and has free online support, as well as community forums to help you immerse yourself in the world of Flash cartooning. As with all books from friends of ED - our support is fast, friendly and free. Even if our dedicated support team are unable to solve your problem immediately, your queries will be passed onto the people who put the book together, the editors and authors, to solve. All foED authors help with the support on their books, and will either directly mail people with answers, or (more usually) send their response to an editor to pass on. About the Author Kevin Peaty is currently Animation Director for Walt Disney Australia. Glenn Kirkpatrick has worked as a Disney animator, as well as being Animation Supervisor on the TV series 'Rugrats' and 'King of the Hill'.
Customer Reviews:
There book covers a lot of the cartoon production techniques.......2007-09-10
This book covers how to create pans, walk cycles, storyboards, perform squash and stretch, etc. This book is an excellent price! Much cheaper than going to animation school. This book coupled with "How to Cheat in Flash CS3" by Chris Georgenes will teach you everything that you need to know about flash cartooning. I bought this book a while ago and returned it because it couldn't really appreciate it the first time. I bought the book again and realized that it's really a very good book. I hope to finally sit down one weekend and start creating my 2nd cartoon. I have no excuse now since I have both "Flash Cartoon Animation: Learn from the Pros" and "How to Cheat in Flash CS3".
Starts from scratch.......2007-08-12
Though the artwork throughout the book isn't that entertaining, the sheer amount of information presented is amazing! The chronological skill set they present to the reader starts you at the beginner's level and ends with you creating flash cartoons. I enjoyed the way it was written as well, the two guys who wrote it obviously enjoy using flash more than correct grammar (or spellcheck for that matter haha). Despite the occasional misspelled word, I recommend this book to anyone just starting to use Flash. It is an excellent resource for future reference as well!
Flash and Cartooning.......2007-07-25
Excellent book for those just interested in cartooning and Flash. It presents the entire process, not just the technical button pushing required to produce a cartoon. The Flash version is old, but has no affect on fundamental concepts that should be understood. Niece blend of hands on, concepts, flow and examples. The material is presented in an easy to read, logical flow.
So Bad I Don't Own It Anymore........2007-01-16
What really turned my off on the book was the online examples of animation work the authors had done. A lot of the most celebrated works were satanic in nature (seriously) or otherwise too prepusbescent homoerotic. I feel, as a serious artist, the intentions spewing forth from their work was a mental block and I could not read another word. Still trying to blot the horrible imagery from my memory.
Thank god I have seen other flash animation because if all I had to go on with what the authors have done, I think I would need to see a therapist.
I wouldn't let these guys teach me to tie my shoes, I wouldn't trust them for fear that they'd be at least be thinking about molesting me, mentally.
Besides, flash aint easy either. It's laborious and it's interface does not lend itself to unique character drawing, just regular blobs that are easily regocnized as flash generated. Keep your day job.
Great Character Animation Book.......2007-01-11
Love this book! It is written by former Disney animators so they know their stuff. I took traditional animation in school and this book covers all the basic animation ideas and principles that would be helpful to beginners. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to create animations of their own.

Book Description
The term "artificial life" describes research into synthetic systems that possess some of the essential properties of life. This truly interdisciplinary effort includes biologists, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, geneticists, and others. The field may be viewed as an attempt to understand high-level behavior from low-level rules--for example, how the simple interactions between ants and their environment lead to complex trail-following behavior. An understanding of such relationships in particular systems can suggest novel solutions to complex real-world problems such as disease prevention, stock-market prediction, and data-mining on the Internet.
Since their inception in 1987, the Artificial Life meetings have grown from small workshops to truly international conferences, reflecting the fields increasing appeal to researchers in all areas of science.

It offers a complete guide to the growing area of 'ecocriticism' and a wealth of material on green issues from the romantic period to the present. Some important aspects that are covered in depth are romantic ecology and its legacy, Nature/Culture/Gender, and environmental literary history. Included in this collection are extracts from today's leading ecocritics and figures from the past who pioneered a green approach to literature and culture. As a whole the Reader encourages a reassessment of the whole development of criticism and will offer readers a radical prospect for its future.

Key readings on 'nature' and 'culture'.......2001-02-02
This is a very welcome reader in 'green' cultural studies that includes but goes well beyond 'ecocriticism', as narrowly confined to a subdiscipline of English literature. Its stated aim is 'to stimulate debate about the 'nature' of criticism and to give green studies some much-needed bearings'(Preface).
The readings included are wide ranging, and are organised in three loosely chronological sections: Green Tradition, Green Theory and Green Reading. They have been chosen to help the reader come to terms with the age-old relationship between 'nature' and 'culture', which Jonathan Bate claims in his Foreword to be 'the key intellectual problem of the twentieth century'.
Ecocriticism is better established in the United States than in Britain. This has resulted in two related problems. First, texts on ecocriticism have up to now tended to focus on American literature and theory. Second, North Atlantic ecocriticism has not engaged with (non-English) European thought as thoroughly as it might. The Green Studies Reader goes some way towards remedying these 'faults'. While it is still firmly focussed on Anglo-American literature, (and film), it includes significant readings from key French and German thinkers.
This book is an important, even crucial, read for anyone interested in the ways in which planetary life might at last take 'its rightful place at the centre of that discipline which we might still call, though with appropriate hesitation, the humanities' (Introduction).
