5 out of 5 stars Be a legionnaire in the armies of the Restless Dead.......2000-05-24

Since I read Wraith: the Oblivion, I have been in love with the dark romanticism and drama of the Restless Dead. Most to my pleasure, the Book of Legions has maintained a feeling not different from that of the rest of the publishing line for Wraith: the Oblivion. In the Book of Legions you will find all you wanted to know about the Legions and the obscure machinations of the Deathlords. It presents information on the organization and history of the armies of the dead, new powers rising in the shadows of Stygia, insight into the secret agendas of the Deathlords and facts on the current political situation of the Underworld. Without a doubt, the Book of Legions is an excellent sourcebook for Wraith: the Oblivion and an essential complement for Ends of Empire. Whether you want to play a member of one of the Legions, or only want to use the conflicts and power struggle among the Deathlords as a background for your chronicle, the Book of Legions is a great asset for any storyteller or player who enjoys playing a part in the unfolding events set in the world of the Restless Dead.

4 out of 5 stars Challenging and a Wealth of Information.......2004-04-25

I knew only how to pass a SELECT * statement before obtaining this book. I have since taken a job writing code from what I learned from this book. Not only is their a wealth of information, but the exercises challenge the reader to think "outside the box" and create code using the information learned in the chapter. I would have given this book 5 stars but sections like views were a bit weak. After reading this book definitely pick up The Guru's Guide to Transact SQL.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial and reference.......2003-10-30

As a programmer with over 10 years experience I have found this book to be comprehensive and concise. There are many useful examples many of which have helped me solve problems on the job.

Lowell Mauer explains things very well.

This is my main reference book it has paid for itself many times over. I highly recommend it.

As a relatively new database administrator with no SQL experience, this book was EXACTLY what I needed. It is written in an easy-to-read and easily comprehended style. It takes me everywhere I need to go with confidence that the code I now write will perform the necessary functions...and perform them efficiently and effectively. Thank you, Sam!

                      Book Description

History, we are often taught, is driven by vast social, political, and economic forces. But each political event, each war, each clash in the streets or at the picket lines, is experienced by individuals. It is this profound bond between public history and personal struggle, Alessandro Portelli contends, that gives oral history its significance and its power.
In The Battle of Valle Giulia—the title comes from an Italian student protest of the 1960s—Portelli reflects on how to connect personal memories with history, how to fittingly collect and represent the complexity of memory. Crossing cultures, classes, and generations, he records the private and singular experiences of Italian steelworkers and Kentucky coal miners, veterans and refugees of World War II, soldiers who fought in Vietnam, Italian resistance fighters and Nazis, and members of student movements from Berkeley to Rome. By listening to those whom others presume are "without historical memory"—such as youthful protesters, or the rural Tuscan women who saw every father, son, and brother killed by Nazi soldiers—Portelli clarifies the process by which narratives come into being as oral history, and he illustrates the differences and distances between story-telling and history-telling.
Portelli's articulate discussion of dialogue, representation, narrative and genre link historical analysis with literary and linguistic theory and with the concerns of contemporary anthropology.

                      5 out of 5 stars multidimensional history.......2002-07-17

When I told a colleague I was reading a book on Oral History, we both cringed. I had to go on to say it "isn't like that." This is a book that uses people's words about their experience as a clue into the complexity of human history. When historians relate "what happened", they are furthering an establishment version of events. As this book shows, some of the events that people who lived through it recount as most important aren't recorded *anywhere*. Likewise, the accounts that are recorded as history are sometimes considered insignificant by the participants.

Another aspect of this book that is interesting is its cross cultural perspective. The author is able to interpret oral texts in both English and Italian, and has done research in Kentucky and in Italy. His background also allows for literary interpretation, demonstrating that when transcribing oral history, care must be taken to accurately recount verb tenses and pronouns as a way of demonstrating whether a person is stating what happened, or how they interpret what happened, or how they have rationalized what happened to fit their current viewpoint.

                            Book Description

Circe Sturm takes a bold and original approach to one of the most highly charged and important issues in the United States today: race and national identity. Focusing on the Oklahoma Cherokee, she examines how Cherokee identity is socially and politically constructed, and how that process is embedded in ideas of blood, color, and race. Not quite a century ago, blood degree varied among Cherokee citizens from full blood to 1/256, but today the range is far greater--from full blood to 1/2048. This trend raises questions about the symbolic significance of blood and the degree to which blood connections can stretch and still carry a sense of legitimacy. It also raises questions about how much racial blending can occur before Cherokees cease to be identified as a distinct people and what danger is posed to Cherokee sovereignty if the federal government continues to identify Cherokees and other Native Americans on a racial basis. Combining contemporary ethnography and ethnohistory, Sturm's sophisticated and insightful analysis probes the intersection of race and national identity, the process of nation formation, and the dangers in linking racial and national identities.

Circe Sturm's "Blood Politics" is a thoughtful look at the factors which go into how the Cherokee people define themselves- as Cherokees, as Indians, as citizens of the Cherokee Nation. Sturm takes on some controversial issues that remain hotbeds of political contention. Particularly on the subject of freedmen, Sturm captures a wide variety of thought.

She is a skilled writer and anthropologist. Some of her writing in her opening was difficult for me to grasp, but this is my fault- not hers. I have a limited background in anthropology, and I am still trying to get my head around the notions of "contradictory consciousness" and "counterhegemonic resistance." Apparently these are standard terms in the academic world of anthropology, but I had to rely on Sturm to point out examples of them in Cherokee culture.

Even if one does not completely follow "Neo-Gramscian Perspectives on Race and Resistance" (a subtitle in her opening), overall the book is easily readable and understandable for the lay person. I came away with a much broader understanding of the concept and power of blood and blood quantum in Cherokee heritage. I also have a better understanding of Cherokee religion, politics, language and social structure.

Sturm includes some stories of her research told in the third person. When she does this, the book reads more like a novel, and I found it to be an entertaining and useful technique in making her point. "Blood Politics" is highly recommended, particularly in light of the recent vote on the status of freedmen in the Cherokee Nation.

                            4 out of 5 stars Tackling a Sticky Subject.......2002-09-06

Sturm provides thought-provoking insights into tribal indentity and shows how the idea of "race" changes and evolves over time. A variety of perspectives, sometimes quite humorous, into the obsession of blood quantum. Her stories throughout the book are welcome breaks from the sometimes stuffy academic writing. I think she neglects to mention that government documentatin of people's blood quantum is arbitrary and often incorrect, usually placing people's blood quantum lower than it actually is. Sturm also seems inexplicably harsh on the Cherokee Nation and in particular Ross Swimmer. Other than these complaints, this book is a great exploration of varying viewpoints.

Have you ever wondered who came up with time zones, or why we adjust our clocks at daylight savings time? This entertainingly written, generously illustrated book, drawn from a popular exhibit at the Smithsonians National Museum of American History, provides the answers to these and dozens of other questions about time. ON TIME showcases unusual timepieces from the museums collection, such as Helen Kellers pocket watch and the earliest bedside alarm clocks, and brings to life some of the lesser-known characters and events that have shaped the way we think about time today.

5 out of 5 stars Time to Read this Book!.......2002-12-06

This is a wonderful book! Written by one of America's premier horolgists, Carlene Stephens takes us through a history of the whole idea of time in America, from the earliest colonists to the most recent atomic clocks.
We all take time so much for granted today - it serves us, apparently at our command; but in fact Stephens demonstrates admirably how time also shaped our whole concept of American society, and how clever men and women took ideas and created institutions that were (are are) time-driven. This started in the agricultural fields of the earliest settlers, loosely bound to a sundial, then to town bells, to tick-tock clocks, to watches, and now cesium clocks good to one second every 20 million years.
The prose is compelling, never leaden; sometimes one has to turn ahead....to see how it's going to turn out! Stephens has a gentle sense of humor that enlivens the writing even further. The pictures are wonderful and support the writing beautifully (and the frontispiece picture of a tower clock is a knockout!)
The book is attractively designed, but don't be fooled: this is NOT a coffee-table book. It is meant to be read. There are plenty of "aha!" moments which will make you re-evaluate how and why you do what you do.
I'd give it 6 stars if Amazon.com would let me!
So, please follow the lead of the Massachusetts General Assembly of 1633 (quoted by Stephens): "No person...shall spend his time idly or unprofitably, under the pain of...punishment."
Get thee out and read this book!!!

                                Book Description

Cutting the Vines of the Past offers a novel argument: African ways of seeing and interpreting their environments and past are not only critical to how historians write environmental history; they also have important lessons for policymakers and conservationists. Tamara Giles-Vernick demonstrates how various outsiders intervening in African land-use practices have repeatedly met failure because of their inability or unwillingness to understand how Africans see their land and their pasts.

Giles-Vernick takes as her focus doli, the environmental and historical perceptions and knowledge of the Mpiemu people in the Central African Republic. She argues that Mpiemu opposition to a modern environmental conservation project—the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park and the Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve—derives from the people's interpretations of their past experiences with environmental interventions imposed by concessionary companies, colonial officials, other Africans, Christian missionaries, and the postcolonial state. At the same time, Mpiemu people associate these contemporary conservationists with the bosses and Christian missionaries of the colonial past, viewing them as sources of jobs, consumer goods, and other support.

Giles-Vernick's argument will interest conservationists and policymakers as well as environmental historians. By examining Africans' environmental and historical ways of seeing and knowing, and by revealing how these have changed, Giles-Vernick offers a fresh perspective on the writing of environmental history.
