Book Description
A lowbrow cult favorite for almost 20 years, collected into book form for the first time.
Though a longtime cult favorite amongst such cultural luminaries as Dan Clowes, R. Crumb, Terry Zwigoff, Simpsons executive producer George Meyer and others, this is Altergott's first book, collecting most of his oeuvre for the first time. Altergott is a master craftsman with a compulsion for the strange; his most famous character, Doofusa panty-huffing hillbilly with a Dutchboy hairdois the star of this show. Imagine Harmony Korine's film Gummo as a graphic novel drawn in pen and ink (but not written) by Norman Rockwell and starring the Three Stooges. The book collects almost every Doofus story from the character's long history, and features an introduction by Ghost World author Daniel Clowes.
With a built-in audience from Doofus's regular appearances in Seattle's Stranger newsweekly, Peter Bagge's bestselling comic book series Hate, numerous comics anthologies and two solo comic booksnot to mention years of word of mouth from comics greats like Clowes, Crumb and Zwigoff, all of whom sing Altergott's praises at every opportunitythis first Doofus collection is sure to be a cult favorite amongst intellectuals and philistines alike.

Wish Altergott Would Publish More!.......2005-10-07
The Doofus Omnibus is just not enough. After reading this, my appetite was whetted for more. Sadly, there isn't much more Altergott in print. I'd love to see a movie of these characters. What crazy, dumb luck that would be! Better than finding a wheat penny! You'd be silly not to buy this book!! Trust me!
Hilarious and Outrageous Comix!.......2003-05-20
If you dig the more controversial work of Crumb and Clowes, Johnny Ryan's "Angry Youth Comix," Tony Millionaire's "Maakies," or the work of Sam Henderson and Ivan Brunetti, you'll find "The Doofus Omnibus" hilarious. A substantial collection of Rick Altergott's work over the past ten or fifteen years, it draws from out-of-print Doofus comic books as well as Peter Bagge's HATE and The Seattle Stranger, where Doofus was a long-running weekly strip.
Altergott has created with "Doofus" Andersen an amusingly degenerate, beer drinking, panty-sniffing, porn-loving philosopher who lives in his mother's basement, though he seems well into middle age. His pal Henry Hotchkiss (who lives in a shack near Doofus' backyard) is a sub-normal, slack-jawed dope who shares with Doofus many of these proclivities, with the exception that he's the stupid one. So, in the course of their many adventures in the tiny burg of Flowertown, Henry Hotchkiss plays the fool as Doofus' sidekick, friend and confidant.
The comic is carefully rendered in a style not unlike that of MAD magazine legend Jack Davis, giving it a unique, almost dated feel. The gags are over the top, obscene and hilarious. Take, for example, the strip where Doofus becomes a dog breeder: he tells Hotchkiss "I like to watch." But it's not all about the gross-out. Altergott's wit is sharp, and his use of language is even funnier than his ... jokes. Doofus is positively erudite, and the way he speaks stands in sharp contrast to his enthusiasm for beer, toy cars, and "underwear games."
I recommend this book without hesitation for fans of adult and underground comix.

Customer Reviews:
Evans view on the Evans.......2006-03-25
I am of course a bit biased. This is a must book for anyone who wants to play the Evans Gambit. This book is thorough and well presented. It is a big improvement over their older book. I like Tim Harding's work generally. Gambit play is fun and can often lead to quick victories, but to play this style of chess, one must be well prepared. This is the bilbe for Evans Gambit players. To be without it is asking for trouble. I also recommend Estrin's book on the Two Knights Defense if you are going to play this opening. If you are Master 2200 or lower this opening can really be fun. It is great for blitz.
A very provocative invitation.......2001-06-28
When you read a chessbook you may simply search for a literal knowledge or better enter into a smart conversation between the author and you. This is the perfect book for that objective. There are no simple answers or "to-do-lists" to find here. This is a monography that invites you to follow the path after the ideas of many chessplayers. The only negative point in the book is the absence of a comprehensive opening tree.
One of the Great Openings.......2001-04-07
I've always enjoyed going over games in this opening and i finally was able to obtain a copy (this is the only book on the subject available from what i can tell). There's quite a bit of information here with 15 chapters and over 230 pages. The game starts out quietly in the Giuoco Piano with 1 e4 e5, 2 Nf3 Nc6, 3 Bc4 Bc5 then BAM!! 4 b4!?. This unprotected pawn thrust attacks Black's bishop begging to be captured in order to open up lines of attack. All the greats have played it since the 19th century. The book also shows variations where Black declines the free pawn. In the right hands The Evans Gambit can be a dangerous weapon.
If you plan on taking up this opening, I'd also suggest becoming familiar with The Two Knights Defence (Black plays 3...Nf6 instead of Bc5). White can play 4 Ng5 with a double attack on Black's f7 pawn or employ the Max Lange Attack (4 d4). All 3 variations are fun to play. Who says the Giuoco Piano has to be boring?
A must for everyone interested in the Evans Gambit !.......1998-07-29
This book is the best one available. The authors have fooled around with this opening for many years in correspondence chess events and must be considered leading experts. If you are interested in the Evans Gambit - and you should be, as 1) it is of historical importance, 2) it may be sound, and 3) it develops your chess style - then you should just close your eyes and buy the book. Think later!
Negative:
1) The book misses an appendix with a tree of opening variations.
2) The authors did not bother to submit all the moves to the current chess computer programs such as Fritz or Rebel. As a consequence the analysis sometimes passes (or introduces) blunders that those programs detect in a flash.
Overall: excellent book!!

Customer Reviews:
Good Book for Transitioning either way.......2007-06-14
I am actually trained on InDesign, but when I started my position with a nonprofit org they still use Quark 5. I purchased this book to see if I can somehow convert concepts the other way around. This book did a lovely job of showing how to do the same task in Quark and InDesign. It's lifesaver. The only opportunity for change would be illustrations. There are illustrations provided, but I wish there were more. Besides that it's a great bang for your buck.
EXCELLENT transitional book.......2006-11-29
After nearly 10 years of Quark Xpress, I made the leap to learning InDesign, and this book has answered almost every question that has come up. Love it! JustYourType.biz, book typesetter and book typesetting
EASY to read and understand even if you have never touched quark or indesign!.......2006-09-16
I am new to the graphic design world as I have been a web designer mostly. I am slowly making the switch from only web design programs to graphic design programs. With so much choice out their I broke it down to quark or indesign. I have never used either program before, and I have to say this book makes it so much easier to compare the two products side by side. Alot of people can sit there and tell you to use one product over the other. But, myself I like to make my own decision on which product of either quark or indesign that best suits me. I have to say this book was easy to read, the pictures and steps were quick and easy to follow for either program. This book is USEFUL for anyone wanting to learn alittle bit about the quark or indesign program. Or even if you know the programs, provides clear and precise steps of comparing the two differences in the products. This book would probably more for individuals on the beginner to intermediate levels, but it is a excellent book resource.
Within Arms Reach.......2006-08-05
Like many others out there making the switch, I have too. Going from Pagemaker to Quark I literally did in an hour. Quark to InDesign, well that took a little longer. This book is great when your in the middle of doing something and you know what you want, but no clue how to do it or what its called. For those things that need some further explaination I recommend the CS2 Bible. I use Face to Face more, but both are great references to have!
An excellent resource for any designer making the switch.......2005-08-02
This book is indispensable to any designer making the switch from Quark Xpress to InDesign. Using the side-by-side comparison of features is much faster than trying to find the answers online, because in order to look up how to do something, you have to know what it's called in InDesign. With this book, you don't. As a book designer, my only complaint is that the layout is unnecessarily complex. The shaded areas and bars, underlined text, icons and more were distracting rather than helpful, and the quality of the paper used makes the book look and feel cheap. Even so, I highly commend the author for the fine job in compiling such a massive amount of material and I highly recommend the book.

Exceedingly fine content........2005-01-12
This book measures approx. 11in wide by 10in tall (28cm x 26cm). On those pages where there are photographs we find photographs and captions only. On those pages where there is text - there is text only. Having described this book as "exceedingly fine" - which it is, let me start with a criticism of this otherwise excellent work. On each page of text that text measures a very neat 6in x 5in and is placed in the centre of the page. This leaves a very large plain white margin on all sides. In fact the text actually occupies less than one third of the available paper on each page but is arranged so that it does not appear so.
Why is this a criticism? The answer is simple. Marty Snyderman's work is so exceptionally good that I felt cheated in that all that unused page space could have been put to better use by including even more excellent photographs. Sorry Marty, but this is why I deducted one star.
This is a book which will teach all people something about the Shark and most people an awful lot about this splendid creature. It is not a book which allows the author's photographs to dominate the important message contained in the text (we actually go 26 pages without a photograph at one point in the book).
Those photographs that are included are both relevant and first class and just occasionally someone like me will say something like " Hey, I've been there, I did that, why are my photos not as good!"
