On-the-money -- a non-nasty Dilbert.......2001-10-01
Enjoyed this very much. A non-nasty Dilbert. Plus a domestic strip as well.
Great, But The Sunday Strips should Have Been In Color.......2000-02-28
It's really Funny, & A good read, my only complain is that the sunday strips are in Black & white , What? No color? that aside, I recommend it , By God!
An Excellent Sally Forth Book.......2000-01-04
This was an excellent collection! Only complaint is that it's not (and never is) long enough.
Where is a new Sally Forth Collection.......1999-11-29
My version of I Gave at the Office is worn and torn from the use it's had from me and my fellow office folks. We are eagerly looking forward to another collection as good as this one.
A hilarious look at life.......1999-08-11
Sally Forth is my favourite comic and I think Mr. Howard has one of the best senses of humour. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially since my local paper no longer carries this strip and I am starved for the hilarious episodes of the life of the Forth clan. I know there are old Sally Forth books which are no longer in printing. Please consider re-releasing these books so I may spend more hilarious hours with Sally, Ted & Hillary.
Customer Reviews:
4 and a half stars, really.......2004-12-02
I started reading Westlake in about 1988, and have picked up a novel every year or two since then. "I Gave At The Office" is definitely one of my favorites. If you have never read Westlake, you could hardly pick a better one to start with. I might recommend the very first, "Adios, Scheherazade" also. Like many of my favorite artists, Westlake has done some great ones, and some not so great. If the term "great" is appropriate to Westlake at all, this book is right up there.
Westlake is a rare bird, and a writer's writer, so to speak; and a pundit's pundit. His novels all speak very much of Donald Westlake himself, and his worldview. He started out with a cynical career in dimestore novels, with a worldly bent that speaks volumes about life in the way a man shakes hands, wears a hat, or drives a car, and a blunt sense of humour. He seems to especially love detective and action novels. He also has always been chimpy nutz with intense and wacky humor, and a strong delivery of aforementioned humor. "I Gave At The Office" is one of the most hilarious.
Set in the early '70s, this is the story of a down-at-the-heels news writer assigned to report on a U.S.-financed Carribean insurgency in the making, one that the news agency is so intent on that on finding nothing there, they proceed to help with said financing themselves rather than go home empty-handed. A classic Catch-22 like Westlake was the best at, save, uh, Joseph Heller. A very easy read, and hilarious, this novel would grace the back of any potty.

I Want My Foreskin For Giftmas is a hilarious, educational and eye-popping look at one mans revolution to end circumcision.
Customer Reviews:
Great for the coffee table.......2007-02-18
More than anything else, this book makes a great conversation starter to bring up the often-taboo subject of infant circumcision, more aptly called Male Genital Mutilation. It's a colorful and lighthearted look at one man's very real desire to have his normal, healthy, and functional prepuce back where it belongs--on his body.
Playfully challenges status quo.......2005-12-30
This offbeat book bursts with color, imagination, raw emotion, wit, and an idealism that challenges the reader to pause and ask, "What if we've been doing it wrong all along?"
The artist and author, Carl Schutt, combines art, craft, and folk art to create a book full of humor and social commentary about why we (Americans) insist on a surgical procedure that most pediatricians agree is painful and wholly unnecessary, i.e. circumcision.
The author creates a tone that is at one moment analytically irreverent about the outmoded Judeo-Christian holdover and in the next moment cloaks himself by assuming the voice of a forlorn, foreskinless child who wonders what it would be like to be whole again. The book's searching and fearless inspection brings into the fray parents, God, and yes...even Santa! No stone is unturned.
The author/artist is an iconoclast who finds a way to smartly broach a subject that could stand to be reexamined even though it remains, for the most part, unchallenged. Who can think of a topic so taboo that its first mention at a party full of urban hipsters would result in a choking halt in conversation?
Implicitly under attack is that uptight male machismo that says, "I'm cut and there's nothing wrong with me!" Well, what if instead of there being "nothing wrong" we could all strive for an ideal and, well, be intact and unmodified? Carl Schutt exclaims that circumcision is the male body image crisis equivalent to that of a middle-aged Orange County woman retooled by countless touches of the plastic surgeon's knife; and yet it's a body image crisis that our culture artificially creates, propagates, and hoists upon boys who are only days old. What if this should be changed? What if this could be changed? It's this sort of idealism and visionary spirit that makes this creation refreshing.
Visually the book appears to have been constructed from a million shavings of felt, paper, cardboard, and other banal materials; these common media are brought together by a hand fraught with an almost maniacal need for precision, energy, and speed.
"Foreskin for Giftmas" is the ultimate gift for enlightened parents-to-be, for people who are initiates in the "zine" culture, or anyone who appreciates a clever creation like this that pushes the edge of human understanding.
Great Book!.......2005-08-05
This is a great book. Everyone should read it. The barbaric crime that is circumcision must end. Carl does a great job of expressing his feelings in a non-threatening way that may get the message across.
Three cheers for a great book!
The Grinch Who Stole My Foreskin!.......2005-07-12
On a warm May morning in 1948 an unknown doctor assaulted my infant body and mutilated my penis. I have been angry about it every day since! Thanks to Carl Schutt my anger has found its voice. In "I Want My Foreskin For Giftmas," Schutt tackles a very adult topic from the perspective of a little boy who has been robbed of his birthright. That little boy was Schutt, but he also was me and millions of others like us. We were defenseless against doctors too eager to perform unnecessary surgery and parents too ignorant to stop them! This book is creative, funny, and irreverent. It is a great read for everyone and a primer for all parents thinking of taking from their sons what no boy should be forced to give away. Bravos for Schutt!
Delightfully funny.......2005-06-20
How many times have you read the words "delightfully funny" and it actually be true? This is it. "I Want My Foreskin for Giftmas" light-heartedly critizes forced circumcision. It's an issue felt by many men but who have said nothing about it.

Book Description
Screening Québec explores the connections between Québécois moving images, national identity and the role played by film, television and video practices in the construction and perpetuation of alternative public spheres in Québécois culture. Beginning with the groundbreaking work of Québécois silent film pioneer Léo-Ernest Ouimet, MacKenzie goes on to explore the influential Pathé's presence in Québec. He then looks at such elements as the first French language features in Canada, cinéma direct, the video activism of Challenge for Change/Société nouvelle and the "post-referendum" cinema of Denys Arcand and Robert Lepage.

Book Description
A cultural studies examination of the twentieth century genre of dystopian fiction in the political and scholarly context of the evolution of science fiction studies and utopian studies since the 1960s. Focuses especially on the "critical dystopias" of the 1980s and 1990s and examines their interrogation of the sociopolitical and cultural changes wrought by capitalist restructuring and neo-conservative and neo-liberal governments in the United States and Europe.
In Scraps of the Untainted Sky, Tom Moylan offers a thorough investigation of the history and aesthetics of dystopia. To situate his study, he sets out the methodological paradigm that developed within the interdisciplinary fields of science fiction studies and utopian studies as they grow out of the oppositional political culture of the 1960s and 1970s (the context of that produced the project of cultural studies itself). He then presents a thorough account of the textual structure and formal operations of the dystopian text. From there, he focuses on the new science fictional dystopias that emerged in the context of the economic, political, and cultural convulsions of the 1980s and 1990s, and he examines in detail three of these new "critical dystopias:" Kim Stanley Robinson's The Gold Coast, Octavia Butler's The Parable of the Sower , and Marge Piercy's He, She, and It .
Dystopian narrative is a product of the social ferment of the twentieth century. A hundred years of war, famine, disease, state terror, genocide, ecocide, and the depletion of humanity through the buying and selling of everyday life provided fertile ground for this fictive underside of the utopian imagination. From the classical works by E. M. Forster, Yevgeny Zamyatin, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, and Margaret Atwood, through the new maps of hell in postwar science fiction, and most recently in the dystopian turn of the 1980s and 1990s, this narrative machine has produced challenging cognitive maps of the given historical situation by way of imaginary societies which are even worse than those that lie outside their authors' and readers' doors.
Customer Reviews:
shows a deep understanding of science fiction themes.......2006-01-22
As a longtime science fiction fan, I thought I was reasonably versed in the main themes of this field. But Moylan's critique is at a far deeper level than my usual comprehension of science fiction. He writes at an analytic depth that shows a deep appreciation and awareness.
For you to get the most benefit from his book, you should already have a background in traditional English literature, as well as science fiction. The utopias and dystopias he studies in the latter are correlated and contrasted to themes already present in the broader literature. Unfortunately, I lack that traditional background, and so much of his arguments were lost on me.

Earth-shattering conclusion to 1st Edition AD&D.......2000-05-02
Ed Greenwood's classic, very rare and out of print, brings the Time of Troubles trilogy to its earth-shattering conclusion. To save Faerun, your heroes (levels 6-9) must journey to the legendary city itself, Waterdeep, and with the aid of Midnight and Elminster himself, they must challenge a god! When the gods themselves walk the realms, life is short, and never easy... an intense adventure, highly recommended.

Book Description
This book contains selected passages from significant works by some of the most influential thinkers in western civilization. Socrates, Bacon, Kant, Plato, Hobbes, Hegel, Aristole, descartes, Schopenhauer, and more.
Book Description
Juxtaposing the insights of feminism with those of marxism, psychoanalysis, and deconstruction, this unique collection creates new common ground for women's studies and Renaissance studies. An outstanding array of scholars—literary critics, art critics, and historians—reexamines the role of women and their relations with men during the Renaissance. In the process, the contributors enrich the emerging languages of and about women, gender, and sexual difference.
Throughout, the essays focus on the structures of Renaissance patriarchy that organized power relations both in the state and in the family. They explore the major conequences of patriarchy for women—their marginalization and lack of identity and power—and the ways in which individual women or groups of women broke, or in some cases deliberately circumvented, the rules that defined them as a secondary sex. Topics covered include representations of women in literature and art, the actual work done by women both inside and outside of the home, and the writings of women themselves. In analyzing the rhetorical strategies that "marginalized" historical and fictional women, these essays counter scholarly and critical traditions that continue to exhibit patriarchal biases.
Book Description
The Asian tsunami of December 2004 killed a third of a million people, and made the Earth wobble slightly on its axis. The world was shocked. Yet we know that such massive catastrophes have happened many times before in Earth's history. Could a natural disaster of this magnitude happen again? Certainly. It is only a question of when. And earthquakes and volcanic eruptions aren't the only natural hazards that face us: we have only just begun to monitor the rocks in space that might be coming our way, and some of us have yet to wake up to the dangers of global warming. Can we survive? Yes, replies Bill McGuire. In Surviving Armageddon he guides us through the latest approaches being researched to prevent global catastrophes, or at least to minimise their effect. Solutions range from the bizarre - filling the stratosphere with millions of tiny reflective balloons to block the sun's rays, to the realistic - the lubrication of earthquake faults, the capture and storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and rockets to nudge asteroids off collision courses with the Earth. Bill McGuire argues that we can make a genuine bid to get through what nature throws at us - providing we take the risks seriously.

Book Description
Tourism and recreation are set to play an increasing role in the future of forests and woodlands. The increasing demand for outdoor recreation and tourism can be partly catered for in woodlands, since these can be used to screen otherwise conflicitng uses and absorb large numbers of visitors. These recreational uses also drive up the use-value of forests that are visited. At the same time outdoor recreation has the potential to bring extra income to forest owners. This can help offset the extra costs of sustainable timber production and forest conservation. But the use of forests for tourism brings added environmental pressures and requires management responses to ensure the sustainability of this relationship. This book addresses 16 international examples of case studies and concepts and looks at the problems, benefits and ideas relating to tourism and recreation within the context of a forest environment.
Customer Reviews:
informative, interesting outlook on some issues.......2001-03-19
Interesting case studies in developing countries and established areas of infrastructure. Offers information, statistics, and conclusions drawn in each area. I focused mainly on the case study of Nepal which offered strong counter arguements to the commonly accepted views of conservation and tourism interaction. The authors seem quite well informed and interested in the topic.
