Book Description
Mike Trim, who started out building models for Thunderbirds quickly turned his talents as a painter and designer to creating the fantastic sets and machines that populated the worlds of the Andersons' science fiction offerings of the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to highly detailed paintings and concepts, Trim is an accomplished artist and this new book showcases Trim's concept drawings and paintings together with his famous record album artwork. The Future Was F.A.B. The Art of Mike Trim contains over 275 color and black and white illustrations, drawings, paintings, model concepts, blue print drawings, and artwork.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic and about time!.......2007-02-07
This book is well researched and written and has full colour photos throughout. For obvious reasons, it focuses heavily on his time working on the Gerry Anderson shows from Thunderbirds to UFO. Reading the book really gave me an appreciation for the work Mike Trim did and especially his contribution to the Anderson universe. Not only did he design many known vehicles, he was also a model builder and much more.
However, it is Mike's artwork that really stands out in this book. Over and over, he clearly went to great lengths to create realistic and believable vehicles, which went a long way to the general feel of the shows.
A nice easy read with lots of info. Like another reviewer mentioned, this goes well with the hard-to-find Derek Meddings book. If you like Gerry Anderson shows, you will love this book.
Great Book.......2007-01-15
Gerry Anderson's shows have spectacular vehicles and production values. Mike Trim's contributions to these shows are documented in this book, filled with rare color behind the scenes photos and his artwork. His design of the Mobile from UFO has always been my favorite vehicle. Along with Derek Medding's 21st Century Visions, a must have for fans of Anderson's shows. Give me more.
About time there is a book on mike Trim.......2006-12-21
This book is long over due - It is well written - Covers the involvement of Mike Trim with Gerry Anderson, etc. The book covers many facts of how mike Trim made the props, with many photos of high quality. I was not aware of Mikes involve with Gerry andersons projects until I read this book. If you are a fan of Gerry Anderson, and or his projects (which where many) Then this book is a perfect complaint to have.Anthony Taylor did a great job of research.

Book Description
In 1945, a year when American crime films were apparently moving out on to the streets of contemporary Los Angeles and New York, one reviewer noted the emergence of a 'cycle of mystery and horror pictures placed in the gaslight era of the turn of the century.' For another, it seemed that for Hollywood there was 'no world of today save the world of London by gaslight'. In Gaslight Melodrama, Guy Barefoot examines the films that gave rise to such comments, and the pattern of discourses that gave rise to such films.
The book's main focus is provided by 1940s Hollywood melodramas such as Gaslight, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Hangover Square. It also discusses a related cycle of British films that located murder and melodrama amidst Victorian or Edwardian furnishings, and then looks beyond cinema to the Gothic novels of the 18th century, 19th century discussions of gaslighting in street, home and theater, and ambivalent 20th century responses to the Victorian era.
Combining close analysis of particular film texts with attention to cinema's cultural context, Gaslight Melodrama provides an exploration of the ways in which the past has been the site of contested meaning, and an examination of the network of melodramatic narratives embedded within familiar and lesser-known examples of classical Hollywood cinema.

A "First Take" on an Interesting Subject.......2005-01-24
I have always been interested in movies from the Forties set in the Victorian era, like "The Lodger," "Hangover Square" "Spiral Staircase," "The Suspect," "Dorian Gray," etc. However, there never seems to have been much written about them. They are ignored by books on Film Noir and on Horror Movies.
So "Gaslight Melodrama" steps in to fill this gap. Ironically, the book doesn't really analyze the movies but rather how the movies relate to ideas about the Victorian era. By presenting the Victorian era as dark and scary, they reflected a rebellion against Victorian values, but also played on an audience nostalgia for a more stable past.
When Barefoot talks about specific films, like "Gaslight," the 1941 "Jekyll/Hyde" and "House by the River," he is very knowledgeable and interesting. However, I would have liked more about the movies and how they related to each other and to the horror and noir genres.
This was an interesting book, but it leaves room for more on this subject.

Customer Reviews:
For those who've "Got Milk?".......2007-07-01
A great coffee table book or a good example of advertising at its best, this book is very interesting and fun, and includes many famous people. It even has parodies on the "Got Milk?" campaign. However, since it was published in 1998, the more recent ads are not included.
The Milk Mustache Book : A Behind-The-Scenes Look at America.......2005-03-19
This is a wonderfull book of stupendous photos with famous and not so famous people that were used for the milk mustache campaign. The photo with steve young is totally cool and the one with Isabella Rosesellini is also very nice to look at. This was a great avertising campaign and the photos are just astounding. This is a keeper.
White creamy goodness.......2002-09-21
The photographic display contained in this volume is positively euphoric. Some may say you can get the exact same results from a blindfolded five dollar streetwalker, but how many times does the girl on the corner look like Spike Lee? I didn't think so.
Did you know there are people who are paid to place that milk-like substance on celebrities? It's a shame I didn't have this tidbitty apple slice from the tree of knowledge seven years ago for I could have saved myself some money in wasted secondary education.
But the true lesson I learned from this compilation is that yes, it is possible to publish a book without contributing even a single thing to great genre of literature. Kudos to you, Jay Schulberg and the dairy ad board!
The pictures are good, I guess.......2002-08-21
If you want to see pictures of the early milk mustaches, this book is for you. If you want to learn anything of substance about the campaign, this book is NOT for you. The written introduction and copy throughout the book have a very "dumbed down" tone and are sickeningly self-promoting. Look elsewhere for real information about the campaign.
New Milk Mustache Book.......2002-07-09
If you loved "The Milk Mustache Book" as much as I did, you should check out the new book, "Milk Mustache Mania." It picks up where this book left off and has all of the newest milk mustache celebrity ads. I love these ads and after all these years still can't wait to see who is next!
Book Description
Players can see how good they really are, with this instructive and entertaining guide, based on Grandmaster Daniel King's Chess Monthly column. He invites you to sit alongside chess's best and predict their moves, winning (or losing) points along the way. Not only will these fun quizzes enable you to gauge your skill, at the same time you'll be learning strategies from the world's champions.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but one issue.......2006-02-18
I think the other reviewer mostly said it all, but I have one point to add.
The Buckley book is much more instructive, because you get consistent and thorough feedback on four candidate moves, every move- the good AND the bad moves.
The King book, by contrast, is basically an annotated game collection, although an unusually well-written and instructive one.
The Buckley book also very nicely protects you against inadvertantly looking at the answers, since the questions are surrounded by a box.
The King book makes no effort to do this, which is very annoying.
The Best Kind of Game Collection for Improvement.......2006-02-07
This book is a collection of 20 games from (mostly) supergrandmaster play. Each game is preceded by a biographical blurb on the game's eventual winner. Then the first dozen or two moves are supplied, taking the reader to the first critical position. From that point forward, the reader is supposed to guess (or rather, work out) the next move by the featured player. After each guess, points are awarded or deducted depending on the quality of the move, the opponent's reply is given, and the process repeats. Throughout the game, there is analysis and commentary to explain the moves and point values. At the end of the game, the reader's total score can be measured against a chart of relative ELO performances.
The biographical sketches are interesting; far from being dry data dumps, they are seasoned by the author's wit and his possibly provocative or controversial views (his angle on Kasparov may raise a few brows). The analysis and commentary are among the best I have come across - comparable to Nunn and Watson in their capacity to illuminate and inspire. I myself learned more from this book than any other 20 games. The games themselves are very well chosen, containing a nice mix of openings, strategic ideas, and combinatorial fireworks. In some intangible way, they are well suited to this guess-the-move treatment. There are even a couple of truly fascinating games by "unknown" players.
If you choose to buy this book for its instructive potential, I strongly urge making the most of this opportunity - by setting aside a decent amount of time; having handy a scratchpad for tallying your score (and maybe a few notes); setting up a board and pieces, but not touching them while you're analyzing; and giving each move a good hard think before commiting to a guess. Your diligence will be rewarded - this is like having 20 extended lessons with three GM-level coaches (the author and the two players). The book will appeal to readers from a broad range in playing strength, perhaps Class C and above.
Highly recommended, especially if you're looking to get beyond endless tactical drills.
For comparison:
GM Graeme Buckley wrote two similar books, titled "Multiple Choice Chess" and "Multiple Choice Chess II." The main difference is that the reader is given specific choices from which to guess the next move. I recommend these books as well, If you like this approach. Pandolfini's "Solitaire Chess" also comes to mind. It's good, too, but I have a few mild reservations: there is considerably less attention to positional thinking; there's a sameness to the games (nearly all one-sided attacks); some of the earlier games were evidently not computer-checked, and I have some quarrel with the point counts.

Second part of the book is still a mystery.......2006-03-15
How can one review a book half of which is difficult to follow?
Perhaps the book should be renamed to "Getting Used to Java Syntax". The basic language elements are reasonably well presented. However, the second part of the book, which attempts to describe more advanced concepts, does not impart much understanding. I am still mystified by Exceptions and Multithreading.
Good for beginners.......2005-08-23
Comeing from Coldfusion and Action script, this book was just the right thing for me to get started with java.
Its still a long way but this book definitly helped me a lot!
Down to earth very easy to understand.......2005-07-27
This is my third Demystified book and I haven't been disappointed at all. All are an easy read and full of just the code you need to get programming quickly. I knew nothing about Java nor programming before reading this. Now I can program in Java. Don't be mislead. It is not an end all book. But it has just the right blend of Java to make you productive right away by building useful applications.
Very good way to learn Java.......2005-07-26
It seems to cover everything you need to become productive right away. The tech jargon is kept to a minimum. Everything is explained for you. You can follow along with examples using your computer. I simply copy the examples and then change them to the specs the Prof wants for homework. Worth the dollars.
Agree with Brin, teaches you, does not throw jargon at you.......2005-07-26
Recently I was in a Java class. We had 60 students and the professor had no time to stop and answer questions. My friends and I were lost and few places to turn. One of my friends stubled across this book. What a great fine. It answered all the questions the professor didn't answer.

Customer Reviews:
Very good introduction!.......2007-05-19
Clear and concise, done with not one wit of 'speaking down' to you, and the explanations are straightforward. The material is introduced a piece at a time, and with reasonable review questions that are surprisingly thorough.
I would suggest it to anyone who wants a good reference to JavaScript as well. Buy it you won't be disappointed.
Very Good Book.......2007-02-18
I felt that this book was very good for beginners as well as a good reference for those that have a strong background in html and JavaScript.
A great introduction for novices.......2005-10-29
This is a great book to start with for those who want to learn JavaScript. It has excellent discussion of the basics of the language with plenty of examples to follow along with. Most of the example scripts are small and basic in nature. But, they can still make useful additions to any website that might need image rollovers, cookies or pop-up windows. In the later chapters there are a few larger and slightly more complicated scripts like an image slide show. The book also has thorough coverage of basic programming concepts like variables, arrays, loops and such. Therefore, any prior programming or scripting knowledge is not an absolute requirement. All the code in this book worked smoothly with errors found only in the HTML code. The minor, and somewhat strange, errors in the HTML code really didn't create any problems. The multiple choice final exam did provide a descent review of the material at the end of the book. However, I would have preferred answers with a little explanation rather than just the correct letter.
The only issue I had with this book is the final chapters. I did expect a little more exposure to advanced scripts and concepts. There were only a few examples and most were scripts from dynamicdrive.com with little or no discussion of new concepts. Much of the final two chapters were just descriptions with URL's of sophisticated scripts that can be downloaded from Dynamic Drive. This was a bit disappointing since most designers/developers probably know how to find and install scripts from the many code libraries on the web.
Overall, JavaScript Demystified is a great book for a true beginner with no prior experience with scripting or programming. This is not the best book for those who just want to copy scripts or who are expecting advanced topics. This is a book for those who want to actually learn JavaScript. I definitely would look forward to a new book by the same author in the same format that covers advanced JavaScript.
I learned all the tricks I see on the web.......2005-07-26
I you ever wondered how the professional web page developers dress up their web pages, then take a look at this book. Every trick that I've seen on commercial web pages are revealed in this book. I easily copied code from the book into my web pages and made mine work like a pro web page. Good book.
Very understandable.......2005-07-26
I recently attended a JavaScript course where the instruct have a difficult time explaining JavaScript in clear Englishing. I'm not a programmer, so I needed someone to explain this in simple English. This book make JavaScript clear enough so that I passed the course.

Book Description
Europe is at a major crossroads in its post-World War II history. The European Union (EU) has not only successfully adopted the euro as a common currency, it also stands upon the threshold of including twelve more member states. In this comprehensive volume, Peter Coffey, author of The Future of Europe (Edward Elgar, 1995), examines the major issues and challenges facing Europe and presents a concise and up-to-date analysis of the economic, political and social issues facing the EU on the eve of its impending enlargement.
The book is divided into five parts, with Part One analyzing issues surrounding the enlargement of the EU including criteria for membership, negotiations with candidate countries, and possible implications. Part Two covers the euro and the EMU. In Part Three the author examines the major areas of reform - institutional as well as policy - and sets forth his own proposals for future policy changes. Part Four reviews the European Convention, while Part Five looks to the future of Europe. Also included are official documents on European unification that are often difficult to obtain. In conclusion, the author foresees that the EU will, at least for some time, become a confederation of nation states rather than a federation as desired by some EU members.
This timely book is a must read for students and scholars of European studies, as well as political leaders and those with business interests in Europe.

The Code Book.......2007-09-25
I found it interesting and well written. Relize Simon is a Brit, so slightly a different type of sentence structure. I found sometimes that I just could not put the book down. I found out about the book from MAA. It's a college Math Mag playing with Hamming Code. Got interested in the artical about the book and then purchased it. Out of the three cyrpto books I bought this was the best. Others focused on the mathmatics and were not translated well from German.
Interesting, informative, geniously narrative, fascinating & enlightening........2007-08-22
This great book might on one hand be seen as an introduction to
cryptography (producing codes) and cryptanalysis (breaking codes), and on
the other hand as an anthology of slightly dramatized biographies of
certain individuals, throughout the whole history of codes and ciphers,
related to corresponding major events.
The style of the book is a successful and well-structured mixture of
popular science at its best and somewhat rigorous descriptions of
concepts and algorithms of various complexity. It starts off with telling
the story of the so called 'cipher of Mary Queen of Scots', then
successively deals with, for instance, the initial invention of a
theoretically unbreakable code (through using random numbers) and its
practical drawbacks, the rise and fall of the Enigma code, the usage of
codes in the form of unusual (hopefully unknown to the enemy or opponent)
languages, the analysis of ancient forgotten languages, privacy issues
including safe transfering of code keys and, finally, ends with
discussions of modern, and possibly future, cryptography/cryptanalysis-
techniques based on quantum computers and theory.
Moreover, additional interesting, and in some instances somewhat more
technical, material is referred to several appendices.
Note: The swedish translated edition includes quite a lot of Sweden-specific
information. (Translator: Margareta Brogren.) In all respects this is a
most impressive piece of work!
Fun Read.......2007-08-10
Great Book! A fun read and very interesting. A history of code making and code breaking from the beginning until now.
A History of Ciphers, With Proper Credit for the Cracking of ENIGMA.......2007-08-07
Singh has provided the reader a delightful history of encryption, beginning with 16th-century codes, proceeding with the mechanized ones, and concluding with modern computer-based systems. He points out how modern encryption is being used to thwart the counterfeiting of dollars, and rejects the so-called Bible Code.
Singh also touches on the intricacies of language, and discusses the difficulty of deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics. This involved the decoding of a language that no one speaks today, and one which has no close relatives among modern languages. He also has a fascinating account of the Navajo Indians and their unique language, and how their conversations were used to keep the Japanese in the dark during WWII.
When in comes to the German ENIGMA code of WWII, and in contrast to some English-language books on this subject, Singh gives credit squarely where it is due. He traces the Polish successes with code-breaking, beginning with the cracking of Russian codes by the Biuro Szyfrow (the Bureau of Ciphers) during the 1920 Polish-Bolshevik War (p. 144). In the years before WWII, a Polish team of mathematicians headed by Marian Rejewski recognizably solved the ENIGMA (p. 155). The Poles were ten years ahead of anyone else in this field (p. 160). The later successes of the British at Bletchley relied on Rejewski's work (p. 170), and followed the lead of the Poles (p. 243). Alan Turing followed Rejewski's strategy (p. 171).
great book.......2007-07-28
this book is one of the best books i have read in a while. it explanes everything you want tok now about cryptography and how to break the codes. this author knows his stuff.
