this book is not quite what i expected it to be but it's like a complete script of the very first simpsons episode called "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire." Even though it's wasn't what i expected it to be, i liked it.

The Variety Movie Guide 2000 serves a different function than, say, VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever 2000. Instead of grading 22,000-plus titles with a historian's eye, Variety--the bible for industry insiders--covers about 8,600 flicks with a you-are-there-at-the-first-screening mindset and a famously entertaining prose style dubbed "slanguage." There's a glossary to explain terms like "thesp" (actor), "legiter" (stage play), "legituner" (stage musical), and "a.k." (ass-kisser). The Winchellesque flavor of slanguage accounts for what Variety might call the book's "boffo b.o." (impressive box-office, or sales).

Editor Derek Elley gives us the running time, cast, director, and other credits with each review. He also tells whether the title is available on videotape, laserdisc, or DVD (but not which format--check updates on Amazon.com). It's interesting to see classics reviewed by deadline journalists unaware that, say, Casablanca is fated to be a classic (Bogie gets thumbs-up as a bitter guy, thumbs-down as a lover). But guess what? Variety scribes often hold up as well as a Pulitzer-winning critic like James Agee, who called Casablanca "tinny romantic melodrama." Variety's 2000 edition reviews few foreign flicks, and about 100 new films since the 1999 edition. The most recent: The Hurricane (Denzel Washington is tops, and "all thesps do well.")

You might also like Derek Elley's Leonard Maltin-size Variety Portable Movie Guide and his delightful The Variety Insider, an in-depth look at 1998's films, plus a fun almanac of all-time movie facts. --Tim Appelo

Now this one is classic. Always updated and very good. Much better than small fat books about films on video and in cinema. This one is big and informative. Was it b/w, is it on DVD, how long is it - everything is here. 20 dollars isn't much for this kind of information. It's not dull, so I like to read it for fun (believe it or not).

          3 out of 5 stars Typical Variety.......1999-05-25

Not a bad review book. Reviews are long and complete, but are quite wordy despite the use of Variety's insider slang. In general, the reviews are overly critical and don't give the reader much perspective on whether or not the movie is actually worth seeing. Also, they're not just a little bit pretentious sounding...

5 out of 5 stars --A reference book for Americans of Polish ancestry--.......2002-05-20

I took a chance of purchasing this book through the mail, hungry for information about anything to do with being Polish. It was a very nice surprise. It's written for the American of Polish descent and is filled with a lot of interesting data. Growing up in Virginia, my family were a long way away from any Polish American districts, and this book highlights the sense of ethnic community that I wanted to experience.

POLISH TOUCHES is a quick way to get the feeling of Polish culture. Starting with a brief history of Poland, the book covers early immigration, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Polish folk arts, traditions, music, Polish heroes, achievements of American Poles, cooking, recipes and other general information. In fact, I was amazed to learn that Chicago has "more than 100,000 Polish immigrants," who arrived in the 1980's. We're told that "Chicago also has approximately 40 blocks of Polish-American businesses."

Being a history buff, I was pleased to find two of my favorite American Revolutionary War heroes mentioned. Brigadier General Count Kazimierz (Casimir) Pulaski was a cavalry and guerrilla warfare expert. His corps, the Pulaski Legion included Light Horse Harry Lee, the father of General Robert E. Lee. Pulaski was wounded in the Battle of Savannah and died aboard the Wasp, an American ship. He was thirty-one years old.

The other short, but concise biography is of Brigadier General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a brillant military engineer and an aide to George Washington. He's known for his engineering feats which include the fortifications at West Point. Washington presented his own sword to Kosciuszko, who was also awarded American citizenship.

A book that provides what it offers, a touch of Poland.

                Description:
The present study was designed to test the effect of self-explanation and prediction on the development of principled understanding of novices learning to play chess. First-year psychology students, who had no chess experience, first learned the basic rules of chess and were afterwards divided in three conditions. They either observed (control condition), predicted, or predicted and self-explained the moves of the computer playing a chess endgame of King and Rook against King. Finally, in the test phase, participants had to play the endgame against the computer and were required to checkmate the opponent King. Apart from their test performance, the conditions were compared on quality of move predictions in the learning phase. The self-explanation condition showed better understanding of the endgame principles than the two other conditions, as indicated by the move predictions in the learning phase that more often exemplified correct application of chess principles. Moreover, participants in the self-explanation condition more often checkmated the black King in the test phase than participants in the two other conditions. However, no differences emerged between the prediction and observation condition. This study showed that, even for novices, providing self-explanations stimulates the discovery of domain principles of chess.

If you are a beginner looking to learn how to use Photoshop CS2 for web site work, I believe that this book is very helpful. Pick up a copy you won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Not for professionals.......2007-07-12

This book is not meant for professionals. The examples and projects in this book mostly look like someone who just started using Photoshop made them. Some directions in the don't match the images (one example in the "Web Pattern Recipes" section says "choose a 3-pixel hard round tip" and they used a 5-pixel brush for their example).

I was hoping for the ins and outs of file types, best practices of optimizing, color tables, etc.. For building a website based on standards, this book is not going to help. It will help you build a site with billions (slight exaggeration) of hard to manage slices and table cells along with plenty of spacer gifs. About the only chapter I plan to fully read is the one on Automation.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to create great web pages.......2007-05-17

If you want to learn how to create a great-looking web page, this is without a doubt the best book you could possibly buy. It is well worth the price and more. I've looked through a lot of books and have not found a better book. This is a must have book for anyone who wants to create beautiful graphics and useful web pages.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary - How to take your web site into the 21st century!.......2007-03-07

This is an extraordinary book. I have to completely disagree with the naysayer reviews below. I've been building web sites for a long time, and I've been using Photoshop for the past couple of years (including CS2 since it first came out). But until I read this book, I could not get the hang of all these new web-specific features in Photoshop, nor could I fully utilize ImageReady. I have now read this book from cover to cover, and it completely explains, with stunningly attractive examples (included on the enclosed CD-ROM), how to use Adobe Photoshop and ImageReady to make web sites with world-class appearance, navigation, remote rollovers, and even built-in Flash animations. The book itself is beautifully crafted, with just enough explanation of everything (very complete, but no irritating fluff). It is like the veil has been lifted. My web sites no longer need to look like 1999 -- they can look like 2009. I am deeply impressed. If you want to learn how to design web sites with amazingly professional graphics, either as a business or just because you want to build the best, even if you are not artistically inclined, pick up this deceptively slim volume. It will make an enormous difference in your web site efforts.

Although the authors are certainly expert Photoshop users, and have a vast knowledge of the product, the information was not conveyed in a consistent nor coherent fashion. Key steps were omitted, important concepts were not clearly explained, and exercises were not presented in a useful order. (The tasks you perform in step 3, for example, conflict with what you are asked to do in setp 5.)

The experience with this book reminded me of that old joke, How to Carve and Elephant ("Start with a block of wood and carve away anything that doesn't look like an Elephant.")

Unless you are well-versed in Photoshop, I would not recommend this book.

                        Book Description

Tracing the events that surrounded the Union's capture of Atlanta, followed by Sherman's famous campaign of destruction through the southern interior, which culminated in April 1865 with the surrender of the last major Confederate field army, this resource provides a fascinating and vivid survey of the second half of the American Civil War in the Western Theater.

Enhanced with color maps and vivid illustrations, this volume focuses in large part on the battles and the progression of the war, but attention is also paid to the community surrounding the campaigns. Personal portraits of individuals, both in and outside the battlefield, assess the human experience of the Civil War and an analysis of the outcome and its consequences round out the work.

Including a clear introduction and chronology of events, this is a valuable resource for students as well as general readers with an interest in American history or military history.

                        Book Description

Since the 1930s, government claims and popular thought within El Salvador have held that the country no longer holds any Indian population. Seeing Indians explores why this claim has endured despite the existence of substantial indigenous communities within the countryÂ's territory. Drawing on history, anthropology, and archaeology, Virginia Tilley delves into the history of Salvadoran racial thought and nation-building to illuminate the political motives for eradicating Indians from the countryÂ's national consciousness.

Part I draws from the authorÂ's own ethnographic research in El Salvador and Guatemala to show how “Indian-ness” has persisted, in contested forms, within El Salvador. Part II traces how the Salvadoran definition of being Indian has been altered to fit within the countryÂ's desired image as a racially unified society—and to erase Indians from public records after 1932. The author explains in Part III the motives driving the myth of Indian disappearance and ends with a look at the debate that raged in the 1990s regarding El SalvadorÂ's indigenous peoplesÂ' attempts to express themselves politically.

As Tilley notes, the transnational indigenous rights movement, translated into potent funding leverage by non-indigenous doner agencies, has “actually generated new difficulties for the Salvador indigenous communities and their movements for national recognition by erecting new standards for Â`being IndianÂ' that clash with older ideas and local experience.”

A cross disciplinary study of the political motives for eradicating indigenous identity in El Salvador.

This book examines what should be an interesting subject, that El Salvador decided there were no Indians left and thus read the indigenous people out of history and politics. But when one delves in deeper they find that this is not exactly the case and that some aspect of this book is itself anthropologically dishonest and racist. El Salvador didnt dedice that Indians dont exist rather the state decided to stop classifying people as 'Indian' becuase it saw how racial and ethnic classificiations had to led to ethnic and racial strife in other places(most recently in Rwanda). Therefore in an attempt to unify the country and perhaps make people realize that class and ideology divide them more then race, race was simply abolished as a definition. It was largely immaterial anyway because most people in EL Salvador were, like Mexico, of mixed ancestry and racial conciousness was mostly a western invention. Therefore the attempt of this book to go back and 're-create' race in order to make people identify themselves by skin color and thus encoruage racism, is quite strange for a book the purports to think the very policy was racist.

Race is largely a western cosntrust invented in the wake of Darwinism. Rather than critique El Slavador the country should be praised for ending racial division and instead enshrining tolerance, which is why the country never suffered the tragedies of Guatemala and elsehwere.

                          Book Description

Although bats and dolphins live in very different environments, are vastly different in size, and hunt different kinds of prey, both groups have evolved similar sonar systems, known as echolocation, to locate food and navigate the skies and seas. While much research has been conducted over the past thirty years on echolocation in bats and dolphins, this volume is the first to compare what is known about echolocation in each group, to point out what information is missing, and to identify future areas of research.

Echolocation in Bats and Dolphins consists of six sections: mechanisms of echolocation signal production; the anatomy and physiology of signal reception and interpretation; performance and cognition; ecological and evolutionary aspects of echolocation mammals; theoretical and methodological topics; and possible echolocation capabilities in other mammals, including shrews, seals, and baleen whales. Animal behaviorists, ecologists, physiologists, and both scientists and engineers who work in the field of bioacoustics will benefit from this book.
