Book Description
Welcome to Unshelved, the world's only daily comic strip set in a public library! Writer Gene Ambaum (the made-up name of a real-life librarian) and co-writer and artist Bill Barnes have been publishing since February 16, 2002. Some of the stories are made up, some of them are based on real life, and some are absolutely true stories sent to us from our readers. And the stranger the story, the more likely it is to be true.
Customer Reviews:
Read this comic!.......2006-10-11
Unshelved is a hilarious comic set in the world of Library Science. I'm not a librarian, but have worked at libraries in the past and this comic is great at making what really happens behind the scenes at libraries really funny.
The art in Volume One is odd, but don't let that put you off. Dewey may look funny for a few weeks worth of comics, but by the end of Volume One the art gets more consistent.
Unshelved: Volume One is sure to keep the attention of anyone who has ever worked at a library, is friends with a library employee, or even someone who is a frequent visitor to the library.
Definitely a must read! Check it out!
Library humor for all.......2006-08-22
This series of library comic strips is funny not only to librarians, but to anyone who uses the library (evidenced by the fact that my mother and sister both enjoy them!). Dewey and his staff encounter situations that all public service employees deal with, and everyone should check out their website then buy the books!
If you are involved with a library, you will LOVE this book!.......2006-08-17
The original book that started it all. Ambaum and Barnes strike comic gold with spot-on satire and other zaniness from the modern library system. I've worked at a library for two years now, and as I turn each page I find myself breaking up in laughter at the fact that most of the situations found in this and the other Unshelved books have happened to me, or I heard about them from someone else. Definitely worth a read... and a re-read! Five stars.
Hilarious! Great for Customer Service Professionals.......2006-08-03
If you work in any type of customer service profession, this compilation of daily comics from Unshelved.com is for you! Gene and Bill do an excellent job of finding the humor in everyday life in a suburban library. So...CHECK IT OUT! (Okay, so my library humor is not quite as great as Bill and Gene's!)
Super funny even if you average 1 visit to a library a year.......2006-07-31
The unshelved comics are great. I limit myself to 5 comics a day and unshelved definetly got a spot. When I first saw a recommendation for it I wasn't so sure since I average one visit a year to a library (this including when I was in college) but it is totally accessable to even non-libraries. I highly recommend checking it out!

Customer Reviews:
Good attempt hurt by poor editing........2005-01-24
SHOCK MASTERS OF THE CINEMA is a collection of 26 interviews conducted mostly by Loris Curci. These interviews are touted on the back cover as interviews with 'The World's Greatest Horror Filmmakers and Celebrities...'. The interviews included in this volume are: Dario Argento, Peter Atkins, Mariano Baino, Kenneth Branagh, Jorg Buttgereit, Ramsey Campbell, John Carpenter, Jeffrey Combs, Don Coscarelli, Wes Craven, Robert Englund, Freddie Francis, Lucio Fulci, Frank Henenlotter, Steve Johnson, Lloyd Kaufman, William Lustig, Bill Malone, Antonio Margheriti, David Price, Jean Rollin, George Romero, Dardano Sacchetti, Angus Scrimm, Sergio Stivaletti, and Anthony Timpone (which I can only imagine Curci's involvement with Fangoria magazine is the only reason Timpone's self-serving interview is included). In order to fit so many interviews within a compact 6x9 paperback, many of the interviews are unfortunately quite short. In order to accomplish this, in some cases, answers have been edited. Sometimes this editing unfortunately results in an incomprehensible mess. Poor spelling, grammar and typesetting further diminishes the value of these interviews, of which some of them are quite entertaining and informative. As a whole, I cannot recommend this book at the new price. If one is available used for a few dollars, it may be worth your while. Quite frankly, better is available in most horror cinema magazines.

Still the best.......2003-05-17
As the curator of artemaya has pointed out this is the book to have. I concurr with everything he has said and find this book indespensible when studying the ancient or modern Maya. Without a doubt this is my favorite book on the subject and even after twenty three years in my possession I still open it up and gaze upon the magnificent pictures. Carmen Pettersen's paintings were done in the early 1970's and are of the highest and utmost quality. Her personal observations on the culture reflect her sensitivity to the subject which in turn is refleted in her art. For example, when describing the toursist hot spot Chichicastenango, with its beautiful marketplace and church where pagan and Christian religion is practised, she comments on the "disintegration of this tribe" and "the complete degeneration of the people who wrote the Popol Vuh" as "the older people and leaders stand fast and steady, suffering silently with sullen hatred in their eyes." The models used in the book are of such exceptional quality and life like that it is as though they will begin moving . She depicts her subject matter as strong and proud, in spite of a humbling history of European influence. Pettersen obviously was in tune with her subjects in art as the expressions on their faces come to life. The details of the clothing are superb and exquisite artistry. The pullouts pages have even more detail as she shows an entire village scene like a marketplace or the people gathered in Chichicastenango. If you are familiar with Maya clothing and the various tribes that continue the ancient traditions, including embroidery sewn with a bone needle, you are probably aware of of colorful and intricate patterns achieved on these textiles. These are not the products sold to tourists but the authentic attire that the people themselves wear. Nothing is lost or compromised in the paintings and are exact reproductions of authentic dress. If you are planing a trip to Guatemala it is highly recommended that you get this book before you go or if nothing else before you leave country to return home. It is preferable to have the book before so you can understand what you will see as you step back in time and enter the remote jungles and ancient customs of the Maya. This is THE BOOK on the contemporary life and dress in Guatemala. If you have anything more than a passing interest in the people of Guatemala than this is the book to have, get it NOW, you will not be dissappointed.
Getting into the Culture of the Mayans of Guatemala.......2003-04-25
This is my favorite book! We were living in Mexico and had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and and visit the Museo Ixchel in Guatemala City, where we found Carmen Pettersen's beautiful book. We also had the wonderful opportunity to see some of Carmen Pettersen's original water color paintings of the Mayans in their "traje," or indigenous apparel, in a friend's home in Antigua!
The water color depictions of the "traje" are incredibly detailed, and the text so intimately describes the culture of the Mayans. It is amazing how much the indigenous dress tells about the ancient and "modern" life of the Mayans.
Every traveler to Guatemala would benefit immensely by reading this book--easy to read and with sixty water color pages (some are fold-out pages) and thirteen photographs to guide the reader through the daily life, religion, and cultural practices of the Mayan families in their villages.
Mayan Dress.......2000-09-10
The Maya of Guatemala is THE classic book on the "traje tipico" (native dress) of the Mayan Indians of Guatemala. The exquisitely beautiful paintings produced by Carmen Pettersen over many years constitute the best illustrations ever done of the Mayan "traje". The sixty colorful full page paintings face parallel texts in English and Spanish telling about the particular "traje" and the customs of the Mayan people. Pettersen writes the informative text rather like a diary of her travels to the various towns so while concentrating on the traje and traditions we see something of the individuals and the writer. The paintings, the real point of the book, succeed better than photographs because the detail of the "traje" is not obscured by light and shadow. While accurately detailing the "traje," the paintings at the same time are intensely personal portraits of the individuals. Although there is no book yet which shows the traje of all the different Mayan towns in Guatemala (and Mexico), this book illustrates more than any other. It is my book of first reference to find out about the "traje" of a particular town. If among the many books I have on the Mayan culture I could keep just one book this book would probably be it.
Carmen Pettersen, born in Guatemala of an English father and Mexican mother, learned to paint in England. As a young woman her family moved back to Guatemala where she lived among the Mayan Indians for the rest of her life. The paintings and the text reveal the high regard she had for the Mayans. The original gouache paintings now reside in the Ixchel Museum of Traje in Guatemala City.

Eric Sink on the Business of Software is a selection of the best and most popular essays from the author's website. This insightful collection of essays explore the business concerns that programmers face during the course of their careers--particularly those programmers who are small independent software vendors.
Sink also covers issues like starting your own business, and then performing the hiring, marketing, and finances--in a style that programmers understand, sprinkled with a touch of humor.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and Informative.......2007-10-04
Eric Sink on the Business of Software is a selection of Eric's essays from his website and blog. He explores the business concerns that programmers face in small software development shops and starting out on their own. Note: much of the material in this book is available online.
This relaxed, easy to read and sometimes offbeat book is a candid recollection of Eric's successes and failures in starting his own Independent Software Vendor (ISV), SourceGear. Eric founded SourceGear, in his own words, "somewhat by accident", and he relates the joys and pitfalls he experienced along the path of starting your own ISV.
I have read Eric's blog for several years, and I have always enjoyed his insights and commentary on a diverse range of subject matter, usually with a software development or business angle. [for example, his series of posts on Source Control HowTo, especially the section on Branching and Merging].
He covers issues such as hiring staff, finances and marketing in a style aimed at programmers, interspersed with anecdotes and humor.
Eric is honest and right on the mark when he says "Don't take anybody's guidelines too seriously", as what works for one person in one situation might not apply in another. Chapter 4 "Finance for Geeks" was particularly interesting and contains basic accounting information you should be aware of if you are setting up a business venture.
It is often said that successful business people are those that learn from their mistakes, and in chapter 7, "Make More Mistakes", Eric describes several examples where he has made a few `whoppers' and learned from them the hard way! Admitting your own mistakes is not always easy, learning from them and moving on to something else is one of the traits that distinguish successful businesses from those that fail.
I particularly liked Eric's `conversational' writing style and his ability to weave ideas familiar to `geeks' into the text, such as his NetHack analogy of the "Gauntlets of Fumbling". If you have never played NetHack, I won't try to explain...just Google it! Definitely worth reading.

A must read for anyone in the "Business of Software".......2007-09-26
This book is great. The author, Eric Sink, is a very good and informative writer. He brings a lot of his invaluable experience to his readers in a very straightforward and eloquent way. So if you are thinking about starting your own software business, then you must read this book first. And even if you are not, but are serious about developing software, then I still recommend it for its insights in to the business of software that you might not otherwise be exposed to.
Excellent collection of thoughts regarding customer perceptions.......2007-09-19
I picked this book up from my local library after seeing a reference to it on Joel on Software. I wanted to get a better understanding of the micro-ISV as I too think we are just starting to see the beginnings of a new software industry that is not dominated by very large companies, but a collection of smaller entities.
Eric makes very valid points regarding platform choices, competition...and the lack of competition, customer influence and influencing customers, features vs shipping product, and many other useful tidbits regarding the business of software. I rated this 4 stars for the simple fact that although much of the book is very good there are certain areas that begged for some more depth, but not many.
If you want to get a true accounting of a small/micro-ISV's business then this book is an excellent start. If you've ever wanted to write your own little app and sell it then this book will provide some guidance. Overall it was a very quick read and I will be going back to remove the dog-ears and extract the most important points...chief among them to "just do it."
Musings Geared for Very Small Software Vendors.......2007-08-25
Though the book has several good insights in it, I recommend it only for micro-ISVs, small software publishers just getting started.
I was looking for a more in-depth analysis. What we have here is a reorganized diary of thoughts from a guy who ran a small software firm. There are no charts, tables, statistics, or other quantitative data. The book is also surprisingly devoid of case studies.
One virtue of the book is it has some good analogies that illustrate principles of the business.
Still, if your software firm is selling more than $500,000 you're not going to find enough material here to sink your teeth in.
Fun to read.......2007-06-20
I've purchased and read 4 books on the topic of running a micro-ISV and this one has been the most enjoyable and informative. The author has a great voice and that makes reading the book a real pleasure. I've learned a lot of useful things. Not only is the writing excellent, but the Eric is an excellent teacher.
Book Description
History by Numbers stands alone as the only textbook on quantitative methods suitable for students of history encountering the field for the first time. It is an exceptional book--even the numerically challenged will find inspiration. Taking a problem-solving approach and using authentic historical data, it describes each method in turn, including its origin, purpose, usefulness, and associated pitfalls. The problems are developed gradually and with narrative skill, allowing readers to experience the moment of discovery for each of the interpretative outcomes. Quantitative methods are now essential for the modern historian, and this lively and readable text will prove an invaluable guide for anyone entering the discipline.
Book Description
Voices of a Thousand People is the story of one Native community's efforts to found their own museum and empower themselves to represent their ancient traditional lifeways, their historic experiences with colonialism, and their contemporary efforts to preserve their heritage for generations to come. This ethnography richly portrays how a community embraced the archaeological discovery of Ozette village in 1970 and founded the Makah Cultural and Research Center (MCRC) in 1979. Oral testimonies, participant observation, and archival research weave a vivid portrait of a cultural center that embodies the self-image of a Native American community in tension with the identity assigned to it by others. Patricia Pierce Erikson is an independent scholar who has taught cultural anthropology at Smith College, the University of Washington, and the University of Southern Maine. Helma Ward (1918-2002) was a Makah elder who served twenty-two years as a Makah language specialist for the MCRC. Kirk Wachendorf is an interpretive specialist at the MCRC who draws upon his experiences as a Makah tribal member and his previous archaeological work to provide public programming. Janine Bowechop is the MCRC's executive director.
Book Description
In Science and the Bible, Ted Burge, a highly respected physicist in the United Kingdom, draws on his background in the fields of science and theology to examine the role of evidence, rather than blind faith, in religion.
Religious belief, whether of Jews, Christians, or Muslims, has God the Creator at its center. Christian belief has at its heart Jesus Christ and finds much of the evidence for that belief in the New Testament. For many, there is interest in discovering more about the evidence for those and related beliefs. Burge addresses this interest, beginning with an analysis of evidence found in the text of the Bible in different translations and then proceeding to evidence from the sciences, including archeological findings, geological mappings, and carbon-dating, alongside data from the arts, hymns, literature, and historians' testimonies.
His study encompasses physical, geological and biological evolution, and their relation to the Genesis story of creation; original sin, the origin of death, and the immortality of the soul, as described in Babylonian and other stories, including the Flood and the Tower of Babel; the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, incarnation and atonement; free will and the nature of love; miracles as described in the Bible; the evolution of belief; and meditation and prayer as a "conscious interchange of thoughts with God."
Burge perceives knowledge of science as knowledge of God's creation. His emphasis on the prime importance of all available evidence represents a new approach to Christian belief.
Customer Reviews:
A harmonious way of perceiving physical, geological and biological evolution as well as the teachings of Biblical texts.......2006-02-11
Physicist and emeritus professor Ted Burge presents Science & the Bible: Evidence-Based Christian Belief, a unique examination of scientific evidence including archaeological findings, radioactivity dating, and testimony from the arts, hymns, and historians to provide a compelling case for Christian faith. Defining science as knowledge of God's creation, Science & the Bible offers a harmonious way of perceiving physical, geological and biological evolution as well as the teachings of Biblical texts. Written for fellow scientists and lay readers alike, Science & the Bible affirms that faith and research do not need to be at odds, but can support one another toward a more positive understanding of the world as a whole.
