Book Description
Roleplaying game in the world of World Wrestling Entertainment. WWE: KNOW YOUR ROLE RPG is an OGL-based roleplaying game that thrusts you into the body-slamming, pile-driving, high-octane world of sports entertainment. You can take on the role of your favorite WWE Superstar or create your own Superstar and commence kicking butt on your quest for championship belts. Each session of KNOW YOUR ROLE represents a single televised event, such as SMACKDOWN! or RAW. During the courseof the show, virtually anything can happen - backstage sneak attacks, ringside brawls, and unexpected betrayals. All this (and more!) can be incorporated into your game session. KNOW YOUR ROLE is different from other, more traditional, role-playing games because it encourages you to play more than one character throughout the session. You'll be able to experience the game from various perspectives: create or play an arrogant rule breaker, a crowd-pleasing fan favorite and a manager or valet. Furthermore, KNOW YOUR ROLE can bep layed without a General Manager (i.e. Game Master). Great for those times when all you're looking for is a straight-out head-smashing match without involving role-playing. Finally, KNOW YOUR ROLE is versatile and easy to learn. You can quickly access your Supersta'rs move set or even create new moves on the spot without wasting a bunch of game time. KNOW YOUR ROLE is smash mouth role-playing at its best!

Book Description
From Hattie McDaniel to Halle Berry, African American nominees and recipients of the Oscar in either the actor, actress, or director categories are the focus of this encyclopedia. Entries--organized chronologically and by name--provide valuable information about how the role or film was viewed during its time and place them in historical context by drawing connections to other awards or events in film history. Appendixes provide lists of overlooked performances, non acting/directing nominees and winners, and performers of nominated songs.
Book Description
The antagonists—oiled, shaved, pierced, and tattooed; the glaring lights; the pounding music; the shouting crowd: professional wrestling is at once spectacle, sport, and business. Steel Chair to the Head provides a multifaceted look at the popular phenomenon of pro wrestling. The contributors combine critical rigor with a deep appreciation of wrestling as a unique cultural form, the latest in a long line of popular performance genres. They examine wrestling as it happens in the ring, is experienced in the stands, is portrayed on television, and is discussed in online chat rooms. In the process, they reveal wrestling as an expression of the contradictions and struggles that shape American culture.
The essayists include scholars in anthropology, psychology, film studies, communication studies, and sociology, one of whom used to wrestle professionally. Classic studies of wrestling by Roland Barthes, Carlos Monsiváis, Sharon Mazer, and Henry Jenkins appear alongside original essays. Whether exploring how pro wrestling inflects race, masculinity, and ideas of reality and authenticity; how female fans express their enthusiasm for male wrestlers; or how lucha libre provides insights into Mexican social and political life, Steel Chair to the Head gives due respect to pro wrestling by treating it with the same thorough attention usually reserved for more conventional forms of cultural expression.
Contributors. Roland Barthes, Douglas L. Battema, Susan Clerc, Laurence de Garis, Henry Jenkins III, Henry Jenkins IV, Heather Levi, Sharon Mazer, Carlos Monsiváis, Lucia Rahilly, Catherine Salmon, Nicholas Sammond, Phillip Serrat, Philip Sewell
Customer Reviews:
Not for the casual wrestling fan, it's a good book but from a more objective, journalistic perspective........2006-01-26
One thing can be said about this book: it's unique. Not just for the smarts but definitely not for the marks, this book falls into a third category: The curious onlooker who wants to study what wrestling's appeal is, dissect it from ethical, psychological and cultural perspectives, and interpret the results. That's not to say it's bad- it isn't, in fact I find it very interesting. But then again, I know a lot of people who would find it quite boring. It's written by psychology and sociology scholars, after all- but don't dismiss it just yet.
What the book does is examine what wrestling's impact is on the world- the female viewpoint, the way its masculine ideal is marketed, its approval of behavioral tendencies, its sometimes subtle racism, and so on. As stated, it's from more of a journalistic or scientific perspective.
This isn't to say it's not fun. It is, though for one to enjoy it one must step outside of wrestling for a while. The perfect audience for this book is an intelligent wrestling fan who not only has some knowledge of wrestling history but also an appreciation of the business side of things that make it tick- in other words, a fan who enjoys what he's watching but can then turn off the tv, step outside of the role of "fan", and learn more about the gears and joints that keep the industry churning.
I'll give a brief example: The book describes one of the lines of action figures, and how each figure was accompanied by an accessory such as a chair, metal piping, or other object with which to attack an opponent. It's pointed out that huge ex-WCW star Giant is accompanied not by such an object but rather a whole extra figure, small Rey Mysterio Jr. The packaging lists a feature which the book explains: "for fun one can slip Mysterio's tiny neck into the grip of the Giant's enormous right hand and then squeeze the larger figure's legs together to see him sadistically lift, lower, and strangle the hapless Mexican". They give an accompanying photo of said event which I find amusing, but that right there is what this book's all about: It goes on to examine why one would find such a thing amusing, and tries to figure out what led to this particular pairing of action figures in such a context, reaching pretty reasonable conclusions that range from potential racism to the size of wrestlers and how we're programmed to respond to them.
See, that's the kind of book this is- it helps to know some of the stuff they talk about, because then one's own familiarity, understanding, and enjoyment of the things dicsussed are enhanced. So in that way it applies to wrestling fans. At the same time, the book's goal- while not being combative- explores the very nature of the business/fan relationship and how it works, as well as when it does and doesn't. It's very well written and informative, and researched enough to make very few mistakes- these guys are definitely well-read on their subject.
So I guess it all comes down to a matter of how you answer the question "Why do you like wrestling?". If your answer is a perfectly acceptable "it's fun", "It's amusing", "it's entertaining", or something similar, then I'd have to say I agree but you won't want to bother with this book, you don't need to bother exploring all the cultural resonance. Now, if to that question you answer "Hmm, that's weird, why do I like wrestling? What makes me care about these guys, even though I know it's predetermined? Why do my minority and female friends watch? What's the point at the end of the day?", then this book will definitely be of interest to you. When all's said and done, it's essentially a bunch of smart people who got together to explore what wrestling does to (and because of) popular culture. A very interesting read for those who want to take the time to see what they've come up with.
Book Description
Some players seem to have an inexhaustible supply of chessboard luck. No matter what trouble they find themselves in, they somehow manage to escape. Among world champions, Lasker, Tal and Kasparov are famed for peering into the abyss but somehow making sure it is their opponents who fall. This book aims to help ordinary players, who may have little time for studying chess, to make the most of their abilities. Unlike most previous literature on chess psychology, this is no heavyweight theoretical treatise, but rather a practical guide in how to lure opponents into error - and thus create what is often called "luck."

Guide to optimism.......2003-08-25
David LeMoir is an approx. 2200 rated player who writes for players at that level and below. I consider this book very useful for the practical player, because in this book the author presents the kind of problems a club player often encounters, and gives solutions that are easy to incorporate into one's own chess thinking.
LeMoir mainly uses his own games as models on how to "get out of jail" and similar issues. Many of the game examples show rather poor play (the kind
<2200 players often exhibit), but the point is to know how to take advantage of it when your opponent does it, and how to avoid it yourself.
There are chapters on persistent defence and on speculative sacrificing. The author contemplates on the reasons for the success of sacrifices and presents nice statistics from his own games. The book is full of psychological insights that give the reader the feeling that his practical chess skill increases with every chapter. One of the most useful concepts that LeMoir addresses in detail is "the drawing margin", which is surprisingly wide in practical games betw. amateurs. And all this time we were led to believe that one pawn is enough for the win...
This is a very useful book for most players rated betw. 1500-2200. For the master level player, this book deserves 4 stars, but for the club player, it deserves five.
The graphical illustrations are nice also, and overall the book is of very good Gambit production quality.
Fun and eye-opening statistics........2002-05-29
I used to get upset while playing chess if I was up a piece and my opponent did not quit. What is he expecting? I would ask, that I get a hart attack? Why doesn't he quit? David Lemoir has some eye-opening statistics to offer: players under 1600 cannot win a game even when up a piece if they face strong opposition.
Lemoir provides all sorts of practical advise on how to improve your luck in chess. If you don't think there is such thing as luck in chess just ask any looser.
Not always do we have the resources needed to improve our luck such as access to a scantly clothed beautiful female to stand behind us while we play. But there are some tactics, which while a little on the gray areas of sportsmanship are legal and you can read about them on the book.
David's father, Ken LeMoir s a retired illustrator and the book has plenty of funny illustrations which make it worth it.
One caveat, most of the examples are Lemoir's games and therefore you are not getting top chess analysis in this book. What you get is practical street smarts for players under 1600.
Book Description
The book is logically divided into 5 main categories with each category representing a major skill set required by most security professionals:
1. Coding The ability to program and script is quickly becoming a mainstream requirement for just about everyone in the security industry. This section covers the basics in coding complemented with a slue of programming tips and tricks in C/C++, Java, Perl and NASL.
2. Sockets The technology that allows programs and scripts to communicate over a network is sockets. Even though the theory remains the same communication over TCP and UDP, sockets are implemented differently in nearly ever language.
3. Shellcode Shellcode, commonly defined as bytecode converted from Assembly, is utilized to execute commands on remote systems via direct memory access.
4. Porting Due to the differences between operating platforms and language implementations on those platforms, it is a common practice to modify an original body of code to work on a different platforms. This technique is known as porting and is incredible useful in the real world environments since it allows you to not recreate the wheel.
5. Coding Tools The culmination of the previous four sections, coding tools brings all of the techniques that you have learned to the forefront. With the background technologies and techniques you will now be able to code quick utilities that will not only make you more productive, they will arm you with an extremely valuable skill that will remain with you as long as you make the proper time and effort dedications.
*Contains never before seen chapters on writing and automating exploits on windows systems with all-new exploits.
*Perform zero-day exploit forensics by reverse engineering malicious code.
*Provides working code and scripts in all of the most common programming languages for readers to use TODAY to defend their networks.
Customer Reviews:
Good for what it is..........2007-08-03
I'd say that most people getting a book like this will already be involved with programming a bit. Enough to know what a socket is, how to write a program that uses sockets, etc... However, I could be wrong.
I guess what I thought was that this book was going to kind of tie everything in together such as "ok, now that you know how to write sockets, we're going to write an exploit that opens a backdoor for you!" However, either I glanced over sections too much, or it just doesn't exist. Each part of the book doesn't seem to have much of a tie in to the next part of the book. Maybe in some small ways, but not by much... To me it seems like a hodge podge book where the authors wanted to 1) Tell you about coding, 2) Teach you basic socket programming, 3) Teach you about porting, 4) Teach you about shellcode and 5) teach you about exploits. In other words, it's almost like 5 separate books that aren't meant to be pressed into a single book except for some very small references to some parts from others...
Now, this doesn't mean this is a bad book. It does teach you what it says it will. It's fairly easy to follow (minus one small error I found) and somewhat in-depth. However, I feel that there are other books that do a better job at the underlying reason why I bought this book... for shellcoding and exploit explanations.
One minor, but confusing and hard to follow error I found in this book is when they have code listings that are line numbered. They're off by a few lines each time they explain it. This is somewhat confusing even to me, but I would catch on and say "Ahh, they mean line 112 instead of 120". For instance on page 428 there is this block of code:
47 shell_addr[0] = (target->shell_addr & 0xffff0000) >> 16;
48 shell_addr[1] target->shell_addr & 0xffff;
49
50 memset(fmt_string, 0x00, sizeof(fmt_string));
51
52 for (x=17; x
< target->count; x++) {
53 strcat(fmt_string, "%8x");
54 len += 8;
55 }
56
57 if (shell_addr[1] > shell_addr[0]) {
And in the analysis of the code it states:
"... On lines 49 and 50, the address where the shellcode resides is split and placed into two 16 bit intergers. The stack space is then populated in lines 54 through 57 with %08x..."
This is clearly a mistake. They're about 2 lines off with each of those statements. This isn't the only time this happens in the book. It's pretty much sporadically throughout the book. So, this may get a little confusing to some or just generally annoying to others (like myself) because you have to stop, go back, scratch your head, figure out where it is they're really talking about and then move on reluctantly.
I'd say look into "Hacking: The art of exploitation" and "The Shellcoders Handbook" if you're getting this book to learn about buffer overflows, format string bugs, etc... and the coding, porting and socket programming don't really apply to you. If they do, this is an overall good book, but not really the best.
Cut and Paste.......2006-06-24
I purchased
Buffer Overflow Attacks, which is also published by Syngress and co-authored by Foster, a couple of months ago. The chapters about shellcode were good and I wanted a deeper explanation. When I saw this book I thought I had found what I was looking for. Unfortunately, the chapters about shellcode are taken straight from BOA. So are the chapter about the xlockmore format string vulnerability and the section in chapter one about InlineEgg.
Additionally, the title says that this book is 'for Security Professionals.' However, the first chapter is devoted to the basics of programming; if someone is unfamiliar with a looping construct, they should not start with a book about shellcode and exploits.
All of this is not to say that
Sockets, Shellcode, Porting and Coding is not an excellent book; it is. But with so much cut'n'pasting going on, I find myself reluctant to purchase another book with Foster on the author list.
Good book.......2006-03-22
I personally like this book. It is not for the light of heart, and for those of you that have no idea what the term reverse engineering means. If you have a knowledge of reverse engineering, or have some experience in analyzing binaries. This is an excellent tool.
unique reference.......2006-02-08
I've had this book for about 6 months now. I've read it, and I've worked through about a third of the code samples.
This book starts of with an intro on programming languages that touches on issues relevant to C, C++, Perl, Java, C#, and others that vulnerability researchers might be interested in. The 2nd chapter on NASL (Nessus) scripting is a little sparse, but is suitable for a quick reference.
The next three chapters are devoted to BSD, Windows, and Java sockets respectively. The information provided is good enough to code working sockets in all three. The BSD code samples seem to work okay.
The next two chapters are on writing portable code and portable network programming. These are probably two of the best chapters in this book. If I ever got heavy into vulnerability coding, I'd be referring to these.
The next two chapters are on writing shellcode. These are pretty good chapters. One issue with these chapters is that the author's s-proc program doesn't quite seem to work. This is a utility that prints your shellcode in hex (-p option) or executes the code to test it (-e option). This would come in handy indeed. I have some working shellcode, but I never got it to work with s-proc -e in chapter 9. I e-mailed the author twice, but he did not respond. I subtract one star for that. Still these chapters have some cool ideas for shellcode.
There are three chapters on writing exploits. The first two are kind of a whirlwind tour of traditional exploit issues (format string, stack & heap overflows, integer bugs). The last chapter is an introductory chapter on using Metasploit and an overview of how to write exploits for the framework.
The last two chapters are on writing security components, and writing a security tool. They are Microsoft centric, and I didn't roll up my sleeves and get into these.
This book brings together a lot of information in a single volume. This would make a great reference, for someone who doesn't have books covering all the other subjects. The chapters on porting are probably the most valuable and unique. There are also some really cool ideas in the chapters on shellcode. There are a few other cool things sprinkled throughout. Plenty of code samples; they are available from the publisher for download if you register the book. The index is really pretty good and suitable for reference. I give back the star I previously took away for that. This is nice as a reference and tutorial.
Heavy Duty Book.......2005-04-18
This is a heavy duty book on computer security from a software standpoint. The two authors were high level research people doing some of the fundamental algorithms used by McAfee. This book describes how the bad guys use various tools and programming techniques to get into systems.
Unlike many security oriented books, this one is not a simple how do you install an anti-virus program. It is written at the fundamental levels given in the title. While there is a quick chapter that talks about programming, this is of more use to people who already know programming than the beginner. This book also talks about the security problems in Java and BSD Unix besides just the common Windows platforms.
It will be interesting to see if the bad guys are so successful that people stop using commonly available software and revert to something else. For instance I was having quite a problem with Internet Explorer showing PopUps. None of the anti-adware packages could clean it up. I switched to another browser (Firefox) just to get away from the heavily attacked Microsoft products.

Book Description
The arrangement of information and ease of use make this comprehensive handbook unlike any other reference source currently available on ethnic groups. Organized alphabetically by country name within four major regions, the book features a series of succinct profiles that describe the ethnic composition and ethnic relations of each country of the world. These profiles offer a quick "snapshot" of each ethnic.
Customer Reviews:
Unique, useful and comprehensive.......2001-09-01
Provides a general introduction to the country you've looked up, then gives the ethnic composition and ethnic relations information. About 2 pages per country, including every country as of publication (1998). Useful, filled with tables, graphs, pictures, and interesting information for an anthropology student. The only thing I would change is that there is no look-up by ethnic group, only the index.
