5 out of 5 stars An A+ book to check out-and brighten your day.......2001-08-12

This book is clearly the best one that Alex Ayres has written and compiled. My brother gave me this book in December 1993, and it has been with me ever since then. The bibliography listing is first rate as well, since they list the authors in alphabetical order. This way, the reader can track down a book that is related so that they can check it out.

Make no mistake, this book is jam-packed with more than 2,000 quotations from the Cowboy Philosopher. Readers will definitely get their mileage worth with this book--plenty of quotations to read, a timeline of events, and an excellent bibliography listing (3 pages long), with a total of 43 books listed, and 8 pages of additional subject references for the quotations that are listed in each category. 5 of the books in the bibliography are from Bryan/Frances Sterling

This is not a bad assortment of quotations from a multi-talented cowboy from Claremore--however, the book overlooked one main event: 4 years after the plane crash in Alaska, a statue was unveiled in the nation's capitol (Washington D.C.), on June 6, 1939. The statue is located next to the entrance of Statuary Hall.

The quotation that I really liked was the one on dogs. (as in "I love dogs", "He does nothing for political reasons"). In this book, I came across lots of quotations and even uncovered a book in the bibliography section that I plan to check out this weekend.

I can clearly see exactly why that if it hadn't been for the Cowboy Philosopher, there would have been no way that Americans would have been able to get through the New Deal/Depression 30s without a good laugh--and to look on the bright side for a silver lining during the New Deal/Depression era. A solid accomplishment for a multi-talented cowboy that made the transition from Wild West Shows to Vaudeville to the Ziefgield Follies--and then, eventually, film (71 films in a 17 year career)--from 1918-35.

As I have said before, check this book out--it's a book worth looking into from Alex Ayres with the spotlight on the Cowboy Philosopher. Worth reading--and worth checking out from Amazon.com online.

From cover to cover, you get an excellent introduction, more than 2,000 quotations, a bibliogrpahy, and additional subject references in addition to a chronology of events. This book is clearly worth the wait--and it's worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and useful as source of inspiration.......2006-10-29

This book has some innovative pools -- especially the one under a set of glass stairs in the entryway of a London building. There are indoor pools, outdoor pools, indoor-outdoor pools, the now-ubiquitous "infinite edge" pools and even "rustic" pools that look like natural ponds. Gorgeous! The book also covers Jacuzzis and pool-related structures, such as cabanas, waterfalls, and so on, but the focus here is high-end "cool" pools.

My three year old can't get enough of this book. He recites the entire book by heart. We've been reading it almost every night for the past year. He now "reads" the book to his 10 month old brother, who squeals in delight when the three year old says "Wheeeee can you dance like me?"

            5 out of 5 stars Pool fun & games.......2007-06-22

Reviewed by Tammy Petty Conrad for Reader Views (6/07)

It's summer time and every kid is begging to hang out at the neighborhood pool. As cool as it is, they can sometimes run out of fun things to do before they are ready to return indoors. This is where "101 Cool Pool Games for Children" comes in. You probably remember playing "Marco Polo" from your own childhood. But do you know "Piranha Tag" or "Snatch the Bait?" There is no chance your kids will not have fun and still be safe when you bring this book to the pool along with your snacks and sunscreen.

As a certified fitness instructor, the author, Kim Rodomista, looks at pool time as a healthy way to play and get exercise. She has organized the games in ways to show how many players are involved, what props might be necessary, if there is any physical contact involved and what skill level is required. The appropriate icons are listed with each game. The list is also categorized by whether they are imagination, individual, out-of-the-pool, racing, tag or team games. They are even indexed by group size for your convenience. There are games for every size pool and are appropriate for ages four and older.

I love the idea of the book and can imagine almost as many uses for it as there are games! What if you are planning a pool birthday party and need some activities to keep everyone happy till the cake arrives, or, if you have signed up to be a camp counselor for the summer, or, you are just tired of diving for toys in the pool? Older children will want to thumb through this to pick their own games.

The author has also provided a section with water exercises to keep parents busy once their children are busy with "Underwater Rugby." As much as I love lounging in the pool, I can't help but feel slightly decadent. Now I can workout and be redeemed from my laziness, although I'm not sure how funny I'll look doing the "Popcorn" down the length of the pool and back.

As a future teacher, Rodomista caught my attention with the Albert Einstein quote, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." I find "101 Cool Pool Games for Children" provides the necessary knowledge to pick appropriate and safe pool games and also perks up my imagination when it has been fried by the sun. Now it's time to dig out my swimsuit and start splashing!

The sun may be setting, but the wackiness is escalating on the shores of the farm pond. "Wheeeee!" proclaims a wide-eyed frog as it jets into the air, "Can you dance like me?" A duck, a pig, and a sheep are the first animals to rise to the challenge, and Mitton, building up the momentum, begins by patterning their respective responses in cumulative verse. As more and more critters join in, each proud of its own inimitable style ("Playful Pony began to prance. Donkey drummed his hoofbeat dance"), Mitton shifts the narrative's structure to move the action resolutely forward toward a literally splashy climax, in which everyone falls in the water. Parker-Rees ratchets up the goofiness of his kinetic watercolor cartoons by giving his animal stars the arm and leg extensions of ballerinas but the bodies of couch potatoes; their faces radiate an infectious silliness. The typography, too, enters into the spirit by shimmying and bouncing through the full-bleed spreads. Kids will likely want to dance or chant along.

I have read most of the chapters of this book. I certainly advise anyone who would like to learn SAS SQL or improve her/his SAS SQL skills.

3 out of 5 stars Why spend the money?.......2007-03-30

I purchased this book one year ago under the influence of the high ratings here, but I didn't get chance to finish it until last week. After comparing this book with the SAS SQL manual (free online PDF file available at SAS website), I came to one question, why bother to buy this book? The book is not a copy of the SAS manual, but it is written in a strikingly similar pattern yet it provides LESS information than the SAS manual; on the contrary, the SAS manual gives you more materials, more examples, better narratives, clearer explanations than this full-of-typo book.

4 out of 5 stars easy to read and follow; better for PROC SQL begginers.......2007-03-20

If you are new to PROC SQL, this is the right book. It covers all the basic queries, complex queries in simple content, some troubleshooting, and a little bit of efficiency. The layout throughout the book is very easy to read and follow. All examples contain PROC SQL codes, results, appropriate explanation, as well as part of SAS LOG and comparison in some examples. This book might be a little basic to power PROC SQL users. But compared to SAS SQL procedure user's guide, it is way better to have.

4 out of 5 stars Quick way to learn SQL.......2006-01-13

An experienced SAS programmer, I used the many helpful examples in this book to learn a lot about PROC SQL in just a few days. (I skipped the text.) I trust the few typos and obscure passages will be cleared up in a subsequent edition. I thought the sections on normalization and integrity constraints were skimpy. The book has also been favorably reviewed in The American Statistician 2005, vol. 59, no. 4, pp. 350

4 out of 5 stars Complete, but the good stuff is at the back.......2006-01-07

It is well written and complete, but despite the title, spends too much time on the basics.

                          Book Description

This valuable directory contains a wealth of data on the history of aviation and attempts, for the first time, to identify every aircraft manufacturer and designer and every aircraft produced. This indispensable reference book is a comprehensive guide to the sheer number and variety of aircraft produced in the last hundred years.

The directory has thousands of entries with, for each manufacturer or designer, the names of all the classes of aircraft produced (powered fixed wing, unpowered fixed wing, powered rotor rotor-craft and unpowered-rotor rotor-craft). Entries are cross-referenced and brief histories of important companies have been added to enable the researcher to chart mergers, closures, and name changes. Significant nicknames and code names are also detailed. This valuable and unique book presents a vast, official array of data in an accessible form and is an essential reference book for any aviation enthusiast.

3 out of 5 stars Exactly what it claims to be . . ........2002-07-09

This directory, according to the introduction, is a byproduct of the effort to reorganize "a century's worth of aviation documents" in the National Air and Space Museum files. The result is an alphabetical listing of some 5,000 manufacturers/designers which have produced roughly 25,000 discrete types or models of piloted aircraft, about which NASM presumably has some information. For example, "Ferguson, Charles J. (California)" is listed has having designed/produced the "Ferguson Glider". Likewise, some 60 iterations of the basic C-130 Hercules design are listed under "Lockheed (Burbank, CA)". However, this book is exactly what the title suggests--a directory. You'll find no further information about the Ferguson glider or any of the many Hercules variants between the prototype YC-130 and the latest AC-130U.

What you will find are very brief histories of those companies (Lockheed among them) which have been transformed over the years through mergers, name changes, and so forth. This can help the serious researcher unravel some of the complex "arrangements" that have been made in the aircraft business over the years, particularly concerning companies that have long since ceased to exist. As would be expected in a work of this type, there are also some bits of what might best be described as aeronautical trivia. On page 253 is listed "Schmuck Aircraft (See: Monarch)".

The last 65 pages consist of another alphabetical listing of aircraft by name. Thus we find that the "ABC Glider" was produced by Schultz and the "Zwergreiher (Heron)" is the name given to the Burgfalke Lo 100.

In summary, this directory will no doubt serve as a useful guide to those fortunate enough to actually access the NASM files, and hopefully it will soon be found on the reference shelves of most libraries. It will also be helpful to someone who's trying to figure out what company built the "Gnu", for example, but bear in mind that to find anything ABOUT the thousands of aircraft listed here, you'll have to keep looking.

The visionary ideas put forward by Lempert, Popper and Bankes work not only for business analysis but provide thought -provoking models for many different types of long term planning. Of particular interest to the general reader are the discussion of conditions of deep uncertainty and the necessity of seeking robust strategies.

5 out of 5 stars The Next 100 years of Strategic Thinking.......2004-01-10

"Shaping the Next One Hundred Years" by Lempert, Popper and Bankes is as an exciting new book on strategic thinking and is comparable in importance to Michael Porter's "Competitive Strategy ". The book describes a methodology that mirrors how successful business leaders think while using novel software to expand and codify the decision making process. Lempert et al accomplish this by using exploratory modeling to evaluate the myriad possible futures a decision maker faces and then comparing different strategies against the desired metrics. The results are new insights and a strategy that works regardless of unpredictable events the future. The methodology is revolutionary and will become the preeminent way important decisions are made.
