Book Description
For most of the 20th century, the work of cartoonist and graphic novelist Will Eisner defined the art of comic book storytelling in the U.S. and throughout the world. Still prolific today at the age of 86, Eisner is the embodiment of "living legend" in the world of comic books, continuing to produce some of the most innovative and influential work in the medium. This all-new hardcover collection of Eisner's gorgeous pencil sketches and groundbreaking designs is a must-have for pop-culture enthusiasts and fans of comic books. Culled from many decades' worth of work, the Sketchbook presents the world as seen through Will Eisner's eyes, with introductory notes for each of the eleven different sections. From his observations of his friends and loved ones hustling through their busy daily lives to witnessing those quiet moments when no one is supposed to be watching, Eisner's keen perception and steadfast hand capture the essence of what it means to be alive.

Eisner's gone now,so anything to remember and see the mind of a master. Working at his craft and showing how its done is more than worth it. My only regret is I never meet the man,and I didn't buy this till after he past.
P.S. Of course the Spirits in here.

Book Description
Why do people ride motorcycles? Thomas Krens, curator of The Art of the Motorcycle, the most popular exhibition ever mounted at the Guggenheim Museum, writes: “For much of society, the motorcycle remains a forbidden indulgence, an object of fantasy, and danger.” And of envy. No other machine is thought of as the vehicle—“the perfect vehicle” Melissa Holbrook Pierson calls it—of rebellion, lawlessness, and freedom. She's A Bad Motorcycle collects the writings of those who have sought that freedom. From the genre-defining—and exploding—Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance to Chasing Che the motorcycle has inspired a startlingly rich, unabashedly romantic body of writing that celebrates the risks and exhilaration of the journey to self-discovery. The book includes selections from Eric Burdon, Harry Crews, Harlan Ellison, Robert E. Fulton, Jr., Che Guevara, Fred Haefele, S.E. Hinton, Dennis Hopper, Richard La Plante, Erika Lopez, Horace McCoy, Allen Noren, Robert Pirsig, Gary Paulsen, Melissa Holbrook Pierson, Patrick Symmes, Keith Tye, Hunter S. Thompson, Lois Wilson, Daniel R. Wolf and Tom Wolfe, as well as photographs by Bruce Davidson, Martin Dixon, Ann Ferrar, Danny Lyon, Helge Pedersen, and Irving Penn.
Customer Reviews:
Gang forum.......2005-12-16
The idea of this book -- a collection of short stories that explore the rich phenomenon of why people ride motorcycles -- is terrific; but the execution is disgusting. Anyone genuinely clueless and curious about why people ride would get a perverse enlightenment from SHE'S A BAD MOTORCYCLE. Just one story from a Hell's Angel perspective would have been plenty. Instead, most of the selections are from motorcycle gang members who are too busy bragging about raping, terrorizing, torturing, and pillaging to bother with good writing. Few ever get around to the subject of what motorcycle riding means to them.
Zanetti also seems to have trouble finding a ride out of California. The other 49 states are severely under represented.
The only reason this book is worth even 2 stars is that it includes a couple token gems that deserve far better company. Entries from Melissa Holbrook Pierson, Robert F. Fulton, and a handful of others aren't enough to make the book worth buying; but they are well worth reading on their own.
Disappointing and very uneven.......2004-06-15
My favorites chapters in this anthology were Ted Simon's from Jupiter's Travels, Robert Fulton's from One Man Caravan, and of course, Robert Pirsig's from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (which is a great read as well as a great ride). Eric Burdon's piece on Steve McQueen wasn't half bad either.
But there's far too much chaff with this wheat. About half of the chapters in this collection waste space on Hell's Angels and related gangery, much of which is bad fiction, dull fact, or has nothing to do with motorcycles. The lone standout is Sonny Barger's chapter which really is classic.
In the end, I think this book's value is twofold -- 1) you get perspective on the variety of riders, their perspectives, and their writing styles, and 2) it suggests further sources of motorcycle literature. But because the caliber of contributions perhaps befittingly matches the lack of sophistication or maturity of many bikers, I suggest that you borrow a copy (or buy used) and then do a lot of skimming.
When it's good, it's REALLY good. The rest is marginal........2004-06-02
I make a point of bringing a motorcycle book to read when my husband and I go on our annual bike tour. This year, I brought Bad Motorcycle. It's an interesting and eclectic collection of stories, essays and a poem (yes, it sucked. More on that later).
The writing styles and quality are as varied and diverse as motorcycle riders and the bikes we ride. Its not surprising that the book starts with a piece from Melissa Holbrook-Pierson's The Perfect Vehicle. She is able to describe the indescribable nuances about riding in a fluid, poetic and natural style. If you love motorcycles, do yourself a favor and buy The Perfect Vehicle. It's not without its flaws, but so well-written, the flaws are easy to overlook (which is more than I can say for a lot of writers.)
After reading a segment from Robert Fulton's One Man Caravan, I ordered the book because I couldn't get enough of his tales of derring-do during the 1930s.
For those who aren't into motorcycles, there are basically two types of motorcyclists. Harley-Davidsons and everyone else. I would fall under the 'everyone else' category. To me, motorcycling is like religion. Not everyone is into the same thing, but I totally respect people's choices. It's what makes the world go 'round. However, not being of the Harley faith, I found the piece by Hell's Angel pioneer, Sonny Barger to be OUTSTANDING. In the too short chapter of the book, Sonny bares a surprising amount of his soul with funny, insightful and intelligent writing. It has given me a new perspective on Harley riders.
Buried in the back of the book is a piece by Rachel Kushner which briefly chronicles her adventures racing in Baja. I was so intrigued, as soon as I finished it, I reread it.
Other memorable excerpts include Che Guevara's Motorcycle Diaries, Allen Norem's Storm, and Denis Johnson's Bikers for Jesus.
I read Hunter S. Thompson's piece on Hell's Angels. After reading it, I didn't really feel compelled to read the other stuff on Hell's Angels. However - and I knew I shouldn't have done this, but did it anyway - I read Diane Wakoski's poem My Hell's Angel. This sentimental pap from a groupie wannabe has no place in this book. How this made the cut is beyond me, but whatever. Any writer who writes about how beautiful she looks standing on a beach is a pretty good indicator of lame writing ahead.
And I'm going to go out on a limb here, and I'm sure this will ruffle the feathers of a lot of riders out there, but I think Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence has to be one of the most overrated books of all time. There. I've said it. The emperor has no clothes. Clearly I lack the highbrow intellegence and depth to fully grasp the intellectual pomposity of this (IMHO) overly verbose, boring collection of printed hot air. I first tried reading it before I started riding motorcycles and couldn't finish it. Then years later I tried reading it again after I started riding and still couldn't finish it. But then again, I took a philosophy class in college and didn't care for it. It seemed like a bunch of overeducated people expounding on how the world SHOULD be and not how it REALLY is.
She's a bad motorcycle.......2004-01-08
What a crock!Either this editor doesn't ride or he just doesn't get it.This compilation of stories about "riding" misses the mark...that is,unless your idea of riding is endless accounts of "outlaw bikers" lifestyles and detailed accounts of their continuous partying. The few stories contained which actually have a theme about the sensations and joys of undertaking a trip on two wheels could almost be printed on the jacket.Get a clue,or better yet,get Peter Egan's "Leanings".
A Woman Motorcyclist Writes:.......2002-06-06
**** - I enjoyed the stories of the clubs, world travelers and riders. Each story has its own flavor lent by the people, time and place which made it alot of fun to "ride along". Only one detraction- Rachel Kushners story seemed but a vehicle to express anger towards her old boyfriend. Her obvious intent made it difficult to read as she took every opportunity to poke at him- not too much there about riding, ostensibly the purpose of the book. I have ridden Baja for over 10 years, and there is a lot there she failed to mention. I'd like to see Geno line up some more writers to share their thoughts and adventures, with a touch more editorial control next time. I'd buy the next one!!!

Book Description
Cards, coins, rings, and even the human predilection for wonder may all be expertly manipulated with the help of this expert guide to favorite tricks and illusions of the magician's art.
Professor Henri Garenne, the urbane author of this manual on conjuring, intended it as a "guide for amateurs and young beginners." Starting with the basics of palming objects and using props, and progressing through more than 200 tricks, this distinctive volume is a rich resource for the new magician or the armchair prestidigitator.
The lessons involve cards, coins, rings, balls, and handkerchiefs. They explain mesmerizing tricks like The Flying Glass of Water and To Produce Eggs from a Person's Mouth. Even more astounding are The Indian Basket trick, The Living Head in a Bottle, and-for a truly stupendous effect-A Lady Suspended in the Air Without Any Visible Support! And those looking for instruction in ventriloquism and thought reading will not be disappointed. The secrets are here.
Elegant vintage engravings demonstrate the tricks and add to the charm of Professor Garenne's delightful treatise.

A Magicians collection.......2006-03-03
This book is a great primer for the introduction of magic. It is well organized, and the illustrations are classic. Though much of the tricks are classic, there are tricks in the book still used today by top magicians like Lance Burton (e.g. sword and card trick). I would recommend it for any magicians library.
Beautiful Little Book starting with the Cover Design!.......2002-01-11
Hard to believe this was originally published in 1886!! This 206 page book is pure delight from beginning to end, with very clear illustrated explanations on Palming,Card and Coin Tricks,Ring,Hat,Ball, and Handkerchief tricks, and a lot besides.Perhaps you will not be totally convinced that they all work, and you may feel some of these acts are not completely described, but you have to admit it's a nicely done work. As far as the THOUGHT READING described in last pages, I am not convinced that by feeling a person's pulse you'll be able to pick a previously disclosed object on a table, but it may be possible! Worth trying at your next little get together, along with an Ouija Board! The book and it's contents are so well done/designed you can be sure it will be browsed thru and admired probably into the 22nd century!!
Great, Detailed Look at 19th Century Illusions and Magic!.......2001-07-23
How do they do that? That's the question this book answers. In so doing, it will extend your imagination to help you decipher illusions for yourself in the future.
I had more fun reading this book than any other "how to" book I have seen this year. As a result, I feel this book deserves more than five stars. What captured my attention was the careful demonstration of how the assumptions of viewers cause them to be misled by the practiced illusionist. I learned more from seeing the details of how the hand is quicker than the eye in this book than I have from all the scientific books I have read about perception and how the brain works. The book's examples will spill over into making readers more usefully observant in all areas of life.
The Art of Modern Conjuring was originally published in 1886. The publisher has done a nice job of keeping the feel of the original (especially with the cover) while providing an easy-to-use volume. Although I have read many books about simple magic tricks and illusions, this one was more revealing and more interesting than any other. I strongly recommend it for those who want to learn how to do simple illusions and for those who want to understand what appealed to families and audiences in the late 19th century. The book is greatly enhanced by the many illustrations that carefully demonstrate how to make the illusions work.
The book was designed as a "guide for amateurs and young beginners."
The subjects covered include basic skills, various illusions, how to assemble an act, and how to handle an audience. Among illusions, you will find out about essential skills like palming and passes, and how to do tricks with cards, coins, wedding rings, handerchiefs, balls, hats, candles, animals, string, flying, and inexhaustible sources. You will also find out how spiritualist illusions, seances, and thought reading are conducted. Over 200 illusions are covered in detail. Some are described in as many as four ways to conduct them!
To me, the best parts included how to create the clothing and equipment that you need to make the illusions work. You will learn where special pockets and trays are needed, and how to change the perspective to cause viewers to assume the wrong thing.
Some of the basic principles were interesting too. "Never tell your audience beforehand what you are going to do." Whatever you say, understate what you are about to perform (a few simple tricks before you make the Eiffel Tower disappear!). "Never perform the same trick twice before the same audience." You must not look at your hands. You need a wand to offer "a plausible pretext for many necessary movements."
After you become more savvy about illusions from this book, think about where else illusions are constructed for your benefit that rely on your false assumptions. For example, used car lots often spray "new car smell" into the interiors of newer cars they are selling. Many people misdescribe themselves when looking for a job or a date. Some people pretend to be other people on the Internet. What is the reality of those situations? How should your reaction to them be changed?
Check all the angles to see what's really going on!

Great Classroom book.......2005-07-14
I am a professor at a large community college in the Midwest. I have been using SW for over 5 years. I adopted this book for my Fall semester freshmen design class. I have been using books by these authors for over three years.
This book does a great job in providing clear and precise procedures on using SW to create parts, assemblies and drawings. The book has you create numerous assemblies: two bar Linkage with various configurations, support bracket, bar and collar, etc.
You then insert the created assemblies into drawings. The drawings contain numerous sheets, views and features. You create Exploded views, Isometric views, bill of materials, parametric notes, linked notes, etc. Get the idea? It is a wonderful book from start to finish. This book is accurate, up to date, and easy to follow for all levels of new users. If you are teaching SW, this is the book for your class.

Book Description
American history saw a dramatic change with the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Now this landmark era is brought to life in a compelling new reference work that provides a complete background of the civil rights movement, with detailed entries on Martin Luther King, Andrew Young, the March on Washington, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and dozens of other notable figures and events from this tumultuous time. Culled directly from the original Africana (about which the New York Times noted, "a very useful tool, and may even set new standards and change attitudes about the African American experience"), this compelling reference work is a unique testament to the remarkable legacy of the civil rights movement.

African Americans in Science, Math, and Invention.......2007-02-25
This biographical profile deals with the lives and scientific pursuits of 160 African-American scientists, mathematicians, and their inventions. It is a very well-done piece of work, and an excellent fact book for libraries both public and private. Individual entries can be read independently, which makes it an easy and suitable source of inspiration for young students seeking role models. Individuals covered go back to the 18th century when Benjamin Banneker was the only recognized African-American scientist/inventor.
What I particularly like about the book is its insightful introductory chapter. From it two things stand out. First, the insights of that chapter and the individual entries I read together paint vividly the difficult path many of those included in the book followed. The path was difficult not only because any scientific activity is a difficult pursuit, but also because these people faced very high artificial barriers-to-entry. Second, denied formal education and training, the scientific endeavors of African Americans progressed in a unique way; they began with invention, then science, and math. This is almost the opposite of what happened elsewhere, where the language of math advanced science and led to inventions.
It is quite clear that success in science, as elsewhere, was a function of political freedom. Many of the early African-American scientists, mathematicians, and inventors were people who somehow gained their freedom from slavery. As political freedom increased so too did the number of scientists, mathematicians, and inventors.
I like this book, I like it very much.

Just the Facts, Sir.......2004-06-11
This book on African-American political leaders is a disappointment, and inconsistent with the academic excellence normally associated with Facts on File products. This reference work, with short biographical entries listed in alphabetical order, focuses on those blacks who were either elected to office or ran for office; famous black leaders, such as Martin Luther King, are excluded. There are inconsistencies though. For instance, there is an entry for Jesse Jackson, who ran for the presidency but has never held elective office, but no entry for Al Sharpton, who meets these same criteria. Jesse Jackson, who is controversial for more than his political stances (see Kenneth Timmerman's The Real Jesse Jackson), is accorded kid glove treatment; his misdeeds are almost completely ignored. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Thurgood Marshall are also omitted-a serious oversight considering the legislative power wielded by the modern judiciary. When the entries for Cynthia McKinney and J.C. Watts were compared, bias is undeniable; it ruins the educational value of this work. For instance, this book entirely ignores Representative McKinney's irresponsible statements (i.e., completely unsubstantiated allegations) that Bush had prior knowledge of the 9/11 attacks and her subsequent refusal to offer a real apology. This bit of information is very important, as it was a major factor in the loss of her congressional seat. In the entry on J.C. Watts, the author discusses his role in promoting the 1994 Republican Contract with America. The author states as fact that the Contract with America stipulated tax cuts only for the rich. The fact is that the Contract with America only called for tax cuts. The author is certainly entitled to his opinion, but he should not substitute his opinion for the facts. As a work of this type is needed, this book is recommended only in the absence of more inclusive, balanced works.

Book Description
There are few books that have the insight and power to change the way we think. Forces of Change is one. In this updated edition, Henry Hobhouse argues provocatively, and most convincingly, that modern history has been shaped less by the actions of human beings than by three natural forces: population growth, food supply, and disease. Together they form a self-balancing triangle: any change in the dimension of one side, Hobhouse shows, is and must be matched by changes in one or both of the other sides. Using key examples from the history of the past five hundred years, the author opens our eyes to new possibilities, so that history as learned from our textbooks takes on a whole new light.
As original as it is ambitious, Forces of Change examines history from the time of the Black Plague to the present day, observing in each period and historical situation the relative roles of the three sides of the triangle. The result is a work that is revealing, eloquent, and—despite the seriousness of the subject—always witty and eminently readable.

Customer Reviews:
Earth-Shaking Paradigm Shift from a Very Prominent Biologist.......2004-10-28
Ruth Hubbard is a professor emerita of biology at Harvard and a member of the Council for Responsible Genetics, a prominent national bioethics board. In this book (co-written with her son-in-law, Elijah Wald), she takes everything you think you know about genes, genetic health care screening, DNA fingerprinting, the Human Genome Project, and the search for a gay gene and other behavior-related genes, and blows your mind by explaining, point by point, exactly how unreliable, meaningless, and discriminatory each of these much-lauded technologies is. After reading this book, you'll never read a newspaper article about the latest genetic study the same way again. Don't miss it.
Rhetoric Against a Needed Science.......2001-11-18
Ruth Hubbard uses the rhetoric of exaggeration to try to convince us to abandon genetic research. But if genes didn't matter then monkeys could talk and if environment didn't matter then we wouldn't have schools. Obviously they BOTH matter.
Let us use the objective methods of science to document the specifics of what is genetically determined and what is environmentally determined.
Any serious AIDS researcher knows that without genetic research we have no chance of defeating AIDS. Obviously we need to study genetics to maintain progress against disease.
A brilliantly written book.......1999-10-28
Dr. Hubbard gives her readers much to think about, and she backs up everything she's written. She explains how the popularly-held reductionist view of genetics does not tell the whole story. Her book explains how the public often only hears one side of the story when it comes to the potential of the latest genetic technologies.
The work of a good scientist, an abysmal social commentator.......1999-08-29
Hubbard does deserve credit for throwing some skepticism on "the next big thing" in science, genetic technology. Unfortunately, she combines her skeptical analysis with her hopelessly egalitarian political views, obscuring any positive contributions this book could have. Hubbard goes through every expected cliche - Nazi imagery (social pundits never tire of this), playing the "race card, and discouraging scientific progress as "unneccessary". Read this book only if you wish to glimpse the future of awful politically-correct rhetoric.
The author breaks ranks to reveal the truth about genetics........1998-10-02
A 5-star book. If there weren't so much hype about gene therapy there would be no need for this book. But bad science and misinformation coming from those with commercial or political interests has given the American public the idea that gene therapy has possibilities. To date, gene therapy has not cured one disease. Ruth Hubbard finally breaks ranks to reveal the truth about genetics.
