    Book Description

    The third volume presents the process of economic change in the same countries. The main emphasis of the book is on institutions: on the changes in economic mechanism and their consequences for the position of the household both as a supplier of labour and as a consumer unit. The process of institutional change is examined at all stages against the background of planned and actual economic dynamics and in the interaction with political developments and social transformations.

            This book is out of print, but if you can find it and you are a student of theoretical mechanics, it is very much worth it. Theoretical mechanics is a complex field, and incorporates a good deal of linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, and in some cases even some differential geometry. Thus you should have your statics, dynamics, and undergraduate mathematics complete before you even think about tackling this material. The explanations that come with the text are quite good and outperform any textbook with a triple digit price tag I have ever seen. If you are taking a course in this subject, it is an essential purchase. The contents of the outline are as follows:

            Lagrangian Mechanics: Generalized coordinates; Hamilton Principle; Lagrange Equation; Symmetries & Conservation Laws;

            Classical Integrable Problems: 1D motion; Mechanical analogies in physics; Two-body problem; Motion in central field & Kepler's problem; Virial theorem; Scattering;

            Mechanics of Rigid Body: Rotational motion; Angular momentum; Inertia tensor; Euler Equations; Precession; Heavy Spinning Top;

            Oscillations: Small oscillations: normal mode problem; Damping, Forced oscillations and Resonance;

            Hamiltonian Mechanics: Canonical Variables & Hamiltonian; Hamilton Equations; Phase Space; Poisson Brackets; Liouville Theorem; Canonical Transformations; Action-angle variables;

            Non-integrable systems and an Introduction to Chaos: KAM theorem; Lyapunov exponent; Poincare Maps; Stable and chaotic trajectories;
            Schaum's outline of theory and problems of theoretical mechanics: With an introduction to Lagrange's equations and Hamiltonian theory (Schaum's outline series)

            This text exhibits the clear and straight forward expositional style one expects from Murray Spiegel. Many basic and advanced results are given as well as a useful discussion of non-inertial coordinate frames. This text in addition to "Schaum's Outline of Lagrangian Dynamics" by Dare A. Wells comprise excellent companion texts for either of "The Variational Principles of Mechanics" by Cornelius Lanzcos or "Mechanics: From Newton's Laws to Deterministic Chaos" by Florian Scheck.

                Harlan Michaels is a powerful trial lawyer who usually flees romance as quickly as his Gucci loafers can carry him. He's immersed in a deadly wheel case when he meets Lana Stewart, a therapist, who is treating his orphaned client. He's immediately intrigued by the long-legged blonde's indifference to his wealth and stature. Lana longs for a romance that's like an old Cary Grant movie. To plead his case, Harlan will need the courage of David and the wisdom of Solomon.

                A great brake-out effort by a talented new author. Intrigue and humor from beginning to end. Each encounter between the leads leaves you craving for more and Ms. Mathews delivers. I eagerly await her next work.

                I'm a Cary Grant fan and I loved the way the author interwove Cary Grant movies through the story. The romance between the characters develops in such a witty and warm way, it reminded me of an old Cary Grant movie.

                The hero is a brilliant lawyer who is challenged as much by the heroine as by his opponent. I loved it!

                  Book Description

                  This is a comprehensive guide to Australian military history, broadly conceived within a critical and analytical framework. It contains 800 entries. The editors have sought a balance between various types of entries. Their interpretation of 'military history' is inclusive, extending beyond standard categories such as battles, campaigns, biographies and weapons, and encompassing entries on the structures of various parts of the defence force organization and their evolution, military language and customs, literature dealing with military themes and treaties, alliances and acts of parliament that have had a significant impact on the military. Biographical entries vary from long analytical essays on figures such as Thomas Blamey and C.E.W. Bean to much shorter entries on figures of less importance. Not every Chief of General Staff or RAN and RAAF equivalent has an entry: as the editors say, some were undistinguished. All office holders of significant rank within the three services are listed in an appendix. No attempt is made to duplicate the Australian Dictionary of Biography; nor, except in two instances, have the editors commissioned articles on specific individuals from the historians who wrote those particular entries for ADB. The editors' focus is different, combining essential biographical facts with more commentary and analysis. Battles are grouped into overall campaigns, thus providing a more integrated approach enabling greater analysis of broader issues. The Companion offers essential technical details on every significant weapons system employed in the three services since their inception, together with comments that help place those systems in an operational and sometimes political context. In addition, there are several longer articles on key aspects of military history and culture. The entry on conscription, while not neglecting past controversies, explains the mechanics of the various methods. There is an absorbing entry on the ways in which animals have been used by the military. Aboriginal resistance to white invasion is covered in a long entry, as is Aboriginal service in the armed forces. There are also several articles on military influences in Australian culture - war films, literature, art, popular culture. Complete with 100 photographs and 32 maps, the result is a comprehensive work of reference, analysis and interest that will come to be regarded as the authoritative work in the field.

                    From the destructive Musket War, which culminated centuries of Maori tribal warfare, to the New Zealand wars to the world wars of the twentieth century, conflict has played a defining role in New Zealand. The Oxford Companion to New Zealand Military History provides a fascinating look at this
                    history. It contains more then 650 entries, written by a wide range of contributors, and covers all of the main campaigns and wars since 1800. It provides numerous profiles of key figures, including Te Rauparaha, Gustavus von Tempsky, Charles Upham, Ettie Rout, Bernard Freyberg, and John Stark. It
                    also describes the weapons and equipment used in New Zealand's military operations, and it features substantial essays on the impact of war on religion, science, technology, and industry, as well as it influence on New Zealand's language, literature, art, and film. Comprehensive and rich in detail,
                    with over 150 photographs and 40 maps, the book is an invaluable reference for students of military history.

                    Book Description

                    This meditation by an award winning historian calls for a new way oflooking at the natural world and our place in it, while boldly challenging theassumptions that underlie the way we teach and think about both history andtime. Calvin Luther Martin's In the Spirit of the Earth is a provocativeaccount of how the hunter-gatherer image of nature was lost--with devastatingconsequences for the environment and the human spirit.

                    According to Martin, our current ideas about nature emerged during neolithictimes, as humans began to domesticate animals and farm the land. In thehunter-gatherer mind, animals and plants were spiritual beings and the earth areliable provider. But in neolithic innovations Martin finds the roots of ourown curiously alienated relationship with other living things and with theearth itself. This alienation is revealed not only in our artifice--thetechnology that moves us further and further away from nature--but even in theway we speak about the world. It is revealed most dramatically, perhaps, inthe horrific destruction we have visited on animals and landscapes. Martin sees the shift to agricultural economies as a change in spiritual imagination. This new approach to food getting meant a new understanding ofourselves and the world--a new, powerful image of the self relative to plantsand animals. It led to food surpluses, a population boom, the appearance ofcities and ceremonial centers, and the emergence of priestly classes and rulingelites--in short, to all the achievements, follies, and horrors of"civilization."

                    Martin argues that history--his own discipline--and human centered historicalconsciousness lie at the heart of this ultimately destructive ideology. Notions of order and progress, of a chosen people and linear time, fuel oursense that the world is ours to improve, exploit, and even destroy. We need torediscover the wisdom and sanity of less presumptuous ideas of nature--aprocess that demands a much larger narrative than historians have been writingand telling. Without calling for a return to hunting and gathering, Martinasks if some of what we lost--or left behind--in the distant past might bereclaimed and used again. To make peace with the earth. To make peace withourselves.

                    "Many will respond with that oft heard reply, But we cannot go back!To which I respond, But we never left--never left our true, real context, thatis. Homo is still here on this planet earth, abiding in our most fundamentaland necessary nature by its fundamental and necessary terms. We left all ofthat only, really, in our fevered imagination. It all began as an act ofimagination, an illusory image--most fundamentally, an image of fear--and so thecorrective process must likewise begin with an image. Let us re-learn, as hunter-gatherers knew to the core of their being, that this place and itsprocesses (even in our death) always takes care of us--that Homo's citizenship,and errand, rest not with any creed or state, but with 'that star's substancefrom which he had arisen.'"--from In the Spirit of the Earth

                    4 out of 5 stars Interesting book, interesting man.......2002-03-02

                    Don't pay attention to Trickster. If you've ever had a course on Native-American mythology you'd know what a trickster is. There is nothing in this book about quantum physics.

                    I was fortunate enough to have Calvin Luther Martin as a professor at Rutgers. I took one of his Native-American courses for fun and it was just that. Wildly fun. He was easily my favorite professor at Rutgers. He is a fantastic story-teller and if he's ever lecturing in your area by all means try to catch him. His lectures had a campfire-like atmosphere. That's how intimate and magical they felt. He would roam up and down the aisles of the lecture hall and speak in a soft yet energetic voice. This man is the definition of eloquence.

                    This book is a very interesting read. Even though it's been about 8 years since I was first assigned to read it I've read it several times since then. Each time I pick it up I see something that I missed in the previous read. This is one of those books that you can't benefit from unless you've read it at least twice. The book will eventually blow your mind if you read it enough. It makes you look at history from a completely different perspective. That is no small feat.

                    4 out of 5 stars Watch out for the trickster.......2001-11-09

                    Just a note: the "review" by Trickster is just that, a con job.

                    5 out of 5 stars the Indians knew about quantum physics.......2000-09-06

                    CHI-HO! Enter the mass of CLM and hear the gospel that you have ignored. Yes, you heard it here first--the Indians knew about quantum physics, but their knowledge of arcane physics was not enough to stop their destruction by the white man. Learn about superpositioning: this when Indians would teleport forward or backward in time (because time is cyclical). There is also a helpful section on painting oneself up like a tribal warrior of the past. My gripe with the book is that Mr. Martin has left out a crucial facet of Indian history--the smashing of the teleportation machines by the early Dutch settlers. This fact cannot be ignored in any survey of the period. CHI-HO!

                    5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life: former student of the author........1998-01-10

                    As a student of Calvin's at Rutgers University this review is not without bias, and yet to call it a stirring book, and to pronounce Calvin a profound thinker is not gratuitous enough. This is a book which engages the metaphysics of Native American occupation of North America as a means to critique the Western understanding of human spatial and temporal existence. It is both historical and philosophical as it seeks to reevaluate the relationship between human beings and the "place" they inhabit. Calvin is one of those individuals who has the power to change the way you see yourself in relationship to the world around you; "In The Spirit of the Earth", contains this power.
