I was pleasantly surprised by the comprehensiveness of coverage that this book provides. Although I'm not easily impressed, particularly by "all-in-one" professional reference books, I will refer to this volume time and time again in order to refresh my memory about a concept, or learn some about an area of the law to which I have not previously had much exposure. Very usuful book.

      Book Description

John Madeley offers a new approach to agricultural production and feeding the hungry. He outlines a low-external input approach, along with a re-integration of new farming practices like organic agriculture and permaculture, and a range of “green” technologies which would eventually make world agriculture a viable livelihood for farmers, providing enough food for the hungry, and safe and good-tasting for the rest of us—all without harming the environment.

        Book Description

Brain Mystique Light and Dark bridges the gap between neuroscience, brain evolution and consciousness by examining scientific models of how the brain becomes conscious. The book argues that the spiritual dimension of life is compatible with scientific naturalism. Not bound by conventional stereotypes, Charles Don Keyes safeguards the unity of brain/mind, synthesized from a wide range of sources, reinterprets the triune brain concept and self-reference models of consciousness.

This is a weird book. I got it because I am intereste din consciousness studies, and in the reviews and summary it seemed to involve some things on scientific theories of consciousness, and brain science as well. But it turned out to be a really strange piece of philosphy. The author tries to put together Mcleans truine brain hypothesis with some Kantian moral philosophy and some PLatonist considerations. I know some Kant and PLato, but unfortunately almost no philosophy of music or aesthethics, and the book goes into these things. I have to say it is really confusing.

The book starts with the claim that materialism is true. Then it exposes the truine brain hypothesis, and extends it to explain some human morality. Afterwards there is a brief account of scientific theories of consciousness, involving mainly "resonance" and self-reference. Theories like Reentry (Edelman) or oscilation (Crick) and even quantum reduction (Penrose) are discussed, but not throughly nor interestingly. The author just points out that some theories involve self-reference, and somehow thinks that that is a key towards understanding the human condition.

Later, there appears talk on music and aesthetics. Somehow, the soul exists by symbolically (Kantian sense) aprehending aesthetics and PLatos "the good and the just". The author holds that this idea of the soul is compatible with materialism, and somehow links religion to aesthetic issues. This is by far the strangest part of the book. It is not clear to me why aesthethics should do all that, but of course one must remember that apparently here aesthethics are viewed with an objective existence, in a Platonian sense. Or maybe not, because there is talk of the neuronal bases of aesthetic experience. I just do not know. Maybe philosphers will like the book, or at any rate understand it better than I did. But it does not add anything of value (in my opinion) to consciousness studies.

3 out of 5 stars the language of theoretical physics.......2003-01-06

When I first encountered this book I was an undergrad, a junior. I flipped through the pages and could barely read the English portions, not to mention the proofs and examples. I must say that it's a tough book for a beginner; MH quickly runs through group theory in the beginning (pay attention: there are some important sentences in there that pop up later when you least expect them to) and then goes into rather a lengthy description of symmetry (point) groups, fit for a chemist or crystallographer more than a theoretical physicist.

After those two chapters come perhaps the most important chapters in the book: the ones on group representation theory. There is a long chapter on theory, and then a great short one on applications of GR that's extremely helpful in understanding what you've just read. After that MH gets into Kronecker products and Clebsch-Gordon coefficients as well as other operations with GR, and has another neat chapter afterwards on physical applications. He speak about the symmetric group in great length, and then about continuous groups, another extremely important chapter. The rest of the book uses the core of what you've just learned to help you understand linear groups in Hilbert space, and applications to sub-atomic physics.

Here's what you need to do to consume this book successfully:

          1) Don't wait for MH to give you an example. Make them up as you go along! And make sure you fully understand each and every little statement he makes: there's no extravagant sentences here, all are vitally important and he will make use of every statement at least once to prove another point.

          2) If you haven't had quantum mechanics yet, hold off on the last half of the book until you have! MH assumes this knowledge, but you can get away with your ignorance for the first part of the book, up until chapter six (and then you can skip around a little bit).

          3) Know the fundamentals of group theory before you begin. It's true that MH doesn't assume this knowledge, but I assure it's vital for ease of reading. There are enough new concepts to absorb with out making your brain less permeable by not having group theory under your belt.

Overall, this book is good for physicists who want to become more adept in the language of theoretical physics (especially quantum mechanics and quantum field theory). I recommend it; but I also recommend you keep at least three other texts on hand that have their own way of explaining the things MH tries to explain. It is a good idea to do that in any independent learning venture, anyway.

4 out of 5 stars great book for beginners.......2001-02-22

At the time I ran into this book I was doing research on martensitic transformations in metals. For that, as an engineer, I needed lots of information on point groups. The first chapter of the book contains the basics of group theory and teaches the totally ignorant all he has to know about the subject. The second chapter immediately deals with the point groups as one encounters them in crystallography. Very comprehensive and usefull information. Then the formal theory on groups is treated and general theorems are derived. For an average engineer without too much mathematical background this may be a bit too much, but the chapter is well written and provides usefull information that is used in chapter 4 to derive the irreducible representations and character tables for the point groups discussed in chapter 2. After that, I did not need the book anymore besides the short treatement of translation groups at the end of the book. I definately recommend te book for anyone who has to deal with point groups and wants to know more than just the basics.

This is one of those books that appear just before their subject matter becomes a fashion. The most famous example is Courant-Hilbert "Methods of Mathematical Physics", which contained the mathematics of quantum mechanics as if the authors had guessed what the future had in store. Hamermesh taught group theory for physicists just before SU(3), quarks, etc, dominated particle physics. Everybody learned groups from "Hamermesh". Now time passed, more specialized books appeared, physicists learned more mathematics... What of Hamermesh? Well, I always thought it was rather boring, a collection of methods with very little motivation. If one compares it with a modern book such as Inui, Tanabe, Onodera, one sees the difference: much more physical context. Hamermesh has, notwithstanding, done his job.

I bought this book in the sixties, the heyday of SU(3) and quarks, which we students all wanted to learn about (excepting one bright colleague, who refused to study anything that wasn't useful in the kitchen, as he put it). This was about the only text available. Ralph Roskies arrived at Yale hot from his degree with Wigner, and after torturting us through a second semester of Jackson's "Classical Electrodynamics" he taught a course on groups. that was probably the best course I ever took. Hamermesh was pretty sketchy when it came to Lie groups and algebras, so we used the first rate review article by Racah on "Group Theory and Spectroscopy" instead. Then, in the seventies, Wybourne wrote his "Classical Groups for Physicists", which was really nice!

Throughout Jackson, Roskies (Wigner's student, remember) had kept harping that 'covariance is not a physical principle, a principle of relativistic invariance is a physical principle.' I didn't understand it, but it stuck in my head so that a decade later I did understand it. There, Hamermesh was useful: he defines very clearly the difference between scalars and invariants. So I learned my lesson. Late. Nearly every relativity book repeats some ancient error and writes "ds^2 is invariant". Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler get it right: ds^2 is a scalar.

In addition, Hamermesh discusses ray representations, which are important if you want to understand Weyl's interpretation of the canonical commutation rules in quantum mechanics.

                        Book Description

In November 1988 Naguib Mahfouz became the first Arab writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. In this study of his writings only now being widely translated into English, Haim Gordon, an Israeli professor committed to intercultural dialogue, examines Mahfouz's work from an existential perspective. While Mahfouz is first and foremost a storyteller, he gives the reader an extra "baksheesh." By telling stories of persons from all walks of life--civil servants, peasants, pimps, lawyers, and businessmen--Mahfouz depicts the existential problems that Egyptians face today. Using a Socratic approach, Gordon questioned Mahfouz directly in a series of personal interviews conducted over the past ten years. In these interviews Gordon probed the existential themes in the characters, plots, and issues raised in Mahfouz's stories. The result is an intimate and highly personal look at life in Egypt. As a very involved and critical onlooker, Haim Gordon addresses the problems facing contemporary Egyptians as portrayed in Mahfouz's stories: the Egyptian's flight from freedom and confrontation, the "niggar" situation of Egyptian women, the debilitating effects of poverty, the blatant oppression of political rights, the degradation of true faith and the lack of spirituality. Mahfouz's stories reveal that which western scholars unintentionally, and politicians intentionally conceal--daily life in Egypt.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent look at egyptian society through Najib Mahfouz.......2001-01-31

This book gave excellent insight into both Mahfouzs' writing style as well as Egyptian culture in many of its peculiarities. Though at occasionally the author takes some conclusions to extreme ends, the book rings true for arab culture and islamic culture in egypt as it is portrayed through Mahfouz's writings.

                            Product Description

Their names bespeak a rich and varied past, belying their paucity of notice by historians. From the Norse Hjaltland comes the modern Shetland: islands nominally Scottish, steeped in Nordic culture, closer to the Arctic Circle than to London. Important Neolithic sites at Skara Brae and Maes Howe in the Orkneys wallow in anonymity next to Stonehenge. Holy Iona, island center of Celtic Christianity; the Isle of Man, former seat of rule over the Irish Sea; Anglesey and Islay, homes of forgotten Medieval courts at Aberffraw and Loch Finlaggan—these are just a few of the more than 6,000 islands that form the archipelago known as the British Isles. Inhabited for millennia and today home to half a million people, the offshore British Isles demonstrate that Great Britain is far more than just England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. This history of Britain’s other islands sheds light on a fundamental but neglected aspect of the past. Focusing on the eight islands or chains that have long supported substantial populations, it tells the stories of Shetland, Orkney, the Hebrides, Anglesey, the Channel Islands, the Scilly Isles, and the Isles of Man and Wight. From their earliest Neolithic settlement, to Roman, Norse and Norman occupation, to the struggle to maintain their unique identities in today’s world, the lives of these islands are a fascinating overlooked slice of European history. A chapter is devoted to each, and maps of the islands are included. Appendices provide geographical descriptions, population statistics, political and economic profiles. A select bibliography and index are included.

5 out of 5 stars The Other British Isles.......2006-11-07

Excellent summary of the overlooked history of the main off-shore islands. Fascinating details of an almost parallel universe to the mainland. Their geography often placed them in the way of power struggles taking place beyond their shores. Each island has its own peculiarities with shifting economies based on far-flung trading partners and changing demands. The book zips along, covering a lot of ground but has a terrific index for cross referencing place names and keeping track of the colorful characters that peopled the isles up to and including recent times.

                            Book Description

A scientific and artistic collaboration reveals a stunning, even sensual, microscopic world.

Pollen grains have fascinated the scientifically curious since the 17th century. They are minute, almost impossible to see without a high-powered microscope, and remain hidden beyond the beauty o the flower until the moment of release. Then the grains, like alien spaceships, are carried by wind, water or animal to achieve their purpose of procreation.

This beautifully produced and highly original book by an artist and botanical scientist portrays the perfect designs of these microscopic organisms. Special light and scanning electron microscopy are used to obtain astonishing images of pollen grains, which are combined with exquisite photographs of the parent plants.

Pollen describes and illustrates in minute detail the reproductive workings of plants ranging from tulips and lilies to orchids and palms. The structure and form of pollen set the scene for the remarkable events that occur from pollination to fertilization. Also included are literary references to plant reproduction, as well as early botanical illustrations.

Pollen is an intriguing book that is both informative and surprisingly beautiful.
