5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for those interested in the 'Asian Miracle'.......2003-12-29

The reason that this book should rank as one of the most important books that is seldom heard of and rarely read, is simple. Its predictions turned out to be devastatingly accurate within no time at all. Christopher Lingle, while a senior fellow at the National University of Singapore, wrote an article in the International Herald Tribune, which angered the Singaporean government. Faced with the threat of imprisonment, Lingle fled the country and began working on this book in the USA. The book was published in 1997 - one year before the catastrophic collapse of the East Asian economies.

Lingle talks about the mountains of literature being churned out in praise of the 'Asian miracle' and the phenomenal economic progress of the Asian and other Asia-Pacific nations, which displayed double-digit growth rates through most of the 80s and 90s. The author contends that the highest-growth industry seems to be the one publishing books about the 'Asian century'.

Lingle attributes the over-enthusiastic optimism for Asia's 'miracle economies' to the classic faux pas of extrapolating short-term observations. While no one can deny the fact that there has been rapid growth of these economies, he points out that, historically, several regimes with fundamentally flawed institutional arrangements have produced relatively long periods of high growth. Spain under Franco in the 50s and 60s, apartheid South Africa, Soviet Russia and even communist North Korea have all shown periods of sustained economic 'progress' until their inherent weaknesses led to an inevitable collapse.

The inherent contradiction is that true economic advance is a direct function of the human spirit and entrepreneurship, both of which are repressed under regimes, which practice collectivist repression in order to maintain the single-party political status quo. The capitalistic tenets of contract law and property rights are fundamentally individualistic in nature and fly in the face of the policies of East Asian regimes.

Lingle takes the bull by the horns in analyzing how the world reached the consensus that indeed the economies of East Asia were 'miracle' economies. It all began when the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) buoyed by the success of the Japanese model at the time decided that it was time for some economic evangelism. The extensively bureaucratic and interventionist model championed by the Japanese was at sharp odds with the World Bank endorsed neo-classical view.

In order to showcase their approach as a theoretical model, which could be successfully adopted by other countries in the region, the Japanese government commissioned the World Bank to produce a report that was published in 1993 under the title 'The East Asian Miracle.' So what were the conclusions of this (at the time, enshrined in economic folklore) report? The most important conclusions of this report were that the 'miraculous' growth experienced by the region was a result of macroeconomic stability achieved by pursuance of prudent fiscal and monetary policy. Much to the liking of its Japanese masters, the report admitted that the large-scale market interventions carried out by these governments had contributed to the 'miracle'

Lingle talks about Max Weber's nineteenth century view that Confucianism would retard the modernization of Asia and how that particular contention seemed to be far from the truth when the Asian ascent began in the 1970s. It soon became widely accepted that neo-Confucianism was a source of East Asian dynamism. This neo-Confucianism, created by selective picking and choosing of tenets from the original belief system and transforming them into a distinct political ideology, justifies the pre-eminence of the rights of the community over the rights of the individual. The 'virtuous rulers' theory, (rather than the choice of the citizenry) advocated by neo-Confucians fitted perfectly in the scheme of things for authoritarian patriarchal governments.

Thus extensive market interventions, rejection of the notion of the self-regulating economy and the ability to enforce stability, resulted in the creation of the myth that East Asia's dynamic yet traditional rulers were responsible for the great ascendancy to economic power. This neo-Confucian inspired set of Asian values is championed by what it commonly called the 'Singapore School', which aggressively promotes its own model of development as uniquely Asian, indisputably successful and easily transplantable.

The distinctive neo-Confucian concepts of 'filial piety' and subservience to authority eatly lend themselves to the one-party authoritarian style of rule of leaders like Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore and Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia. The venerated Confucian tradition of strong family bonds, in a modern context translates into what Lingle calls 'dynastic succession and an entrenched policy of nepotism.'

Examples of course, are numerous. From Sukarno and Suharto in Indonesia to the Gandhis and Bandaranaikes in India and Sri Lanka respectively; from the Korean Kims and Cambodian royalty to the Marcoses and the Acquinos of the Philippines, Asia has a long 'tradition' of dynastic democracies. Lingle points out that such nepotism is in direct conflict with modernizing forces such as marketization. They seem to be more compatible with imperial colonialism than modern democracy.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible economic prognostications for a change!.......2002-10-02

Lingle has again written a book far more valuable than its price. For those interested in Asia, and the econo-politics of the region, this is a must for any library, private or public. It is easily readable even for those not initiated in the arcane language of economics. His initial beliefs were manifested in the last year and a half.

5 out of 5 stars The Reasons for the Financial Crisis in Asia........1998-07-10

This book was written before the Asian Financial crisis hit in late 97. It basically high lights why the author thinks there will be no Asian Century and instead there will be a Global Century. Lingle believes that the Asia dragons will not be as strong as everyone thinks for the following reasons: There is no free press in all these countries so the same party stays in power; All the countries have basically a one party system. This promotes corruption; there is a lack of transparency in all the banking systems. This leads to insolvency; business decisions are made not based on marketing forces but based on connection; the cost of business includes bribes; and finally since the governments are so involved in their economies, they cannot react quickly enough to changes which take placein the market place. This will not be acceptable in the highly global competitive world of the next century.

Right now based on what we are seeing through out all of Asia, Lingle appears to have known what he was writing about. He called the crisis before it hit. Based on his insightful analysis he shows us that he knows more about Asia than all these other so called Asian experts who were straight lining the Asian miricle into the next century right up to the day before the Asian Crisis hit.

5 out of 5 stars From the Publisher & What People Are Saying (courtesy of Barnes & Noble).......2005-09-29

FROM THE PUBLISHER
"In late 1995, the Million Man March drew hundreds of thousands of black men to Washington, DC, and seemed even to skeptics a powerful sign not only of black male solidarity, but also of black racial solidarity. Yet while generating a sense of community and common purpose, the Million Man March, with its deliberate exclusion of women and implicit rejection of black gay men, also highlighted one of the central faultlines in African American politics: the role of gender and sexuality in antiracist agenda.
"In this groundbreaking anthology, a companion to the highly successful Critical Race Feminism, Devon Carbado changes the terms of the debate over racism, gender, and sexuality in black America. The essays cover such topics as the legal construction of black male identity, domestic abuse in the black community, the enduring power of black machismo, the politics of black male/white female relationships, racial essentialism, the role of black men in black women's quest for racial equality, and the heterosexist nature of black political engagement.
"Featuring work by Cornel West, Huey Newton, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., Houston Baker, Marlon T. Riggs, Dwight McBride, Michael Awkward, Ishmael Reed, Derrick Bell, and many others, Devon Carbado's anthology stakes out new territory in the American racial landscape."

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
"This voice and timely book addresses the perceptual split between an officially 'colorblind' world and the lived experience of so many for whom race determines so much. Although centered on images of black men, these extraordinary essays provide compelling insights about stereotypes of women, whiteness, class status, ethnicity, and gender. From 'suspect profile' to 'natural athlete,' the disuniting effects of racial clichés are meticulously analyzed in this sharp and always moving anthology."--Patricia J. Williams, Author of The Rooster's Egg and The Alchemy of Race and Rights

"This exciting anthology breaks new ground in the battle to end misogyny and sexism. It gathers for the first time the diverse and eloquent voices of black men -- many of them speaking out as feminists for a revitalized vision of feminism. This unique collection offers insights, perspectives rarely heard, and tremendous hope. It is required reading for all who care about the intersection of race, gender, class and sexuality."--Urvashi Vaid, Director of the Policy Institute of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and author of Virtual Equality: The Mainstreaming of Gay and Lesbian Liberation

5 out of 5 stars Breaking the Mold.......2000-04-26

Too often when men sieze discussions they follow a testosterone laden path; their seeming inability to "step outside of themselves" reveals the privileged space that they occupy. Mr. Carbado's contribution is essential in breaking this precedent. The fact that each particular subject is viewed as if it were a multi-faceted jewel--what in academic jingoism would be called "multi-disciplinary"--is here treated with amazing and refreshing editorial judgement. Where else but here can one find "under one roof" such disparately charged thinkers as Cornel West and Dr. Huey P. Newton? A vital and one of a kind contribution into the Black male intellect.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on race read this year.......1999-12-23

At last, a book that looks at black men and feminism from a wide variety of perspectives. Carbado has assembled one of the most provocative and intelligent collections on race theory, particularly where issues of gender and sexual orientation are involved. A must read for everyone who thinks they've seen it all before. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Borges, probably on of the Best Writers of the Twentieth Century.......2005-08-03

Borges, amid his metaphysical turmoils and speculations with time draws a magical infinite picture of the world in the most charming of ways, his first poems a little bit deceptive in their language and exceeding to much in rational thought do not reach the masterpiece status of his latter poems (volumes 2
            through 3).
In his narrative style and prose, with great erudition, he investigates profoundly in the tought of the great thinkers of all time (known and unknown) to try to solve the puzzle of time, his endless question. Some fault can be found in his style as sometimes monotone, repeating the same questions.
One of his great books (History of Infamy) is a delighful antology of the most important aspects of famous criminals. Great reading!

I had already seen the first associated encyclopedic set, The Great Archaeologists. This particular three volume addition is just as impressive. I would like to compliment Tim Murray for the overall quality for all of the main encyclopedic entries, not an easy task when there are so many contributors. This would be a fine reference source for anyone who wants a definitive, world wide glimpse of the varied field and history of archaeology. A cumulative table of contents in the front of each volume provides us with the complete listing of the main alphabetical entries. Signed entries (the list of contributors forming part of the appendices in the last volume) include appropriate see also references and bibliographic references for further research. A well done powerful reference tool is the index, one of the best that I have seen. Page numbers in bold face type show that the subject has its place in the main encyclopedic presentation. The editor took special care to indicate if the subject reference is a photograph or illustration. Consider this as an essential, first stop reference tool to ground you in a wide variety of related world-wide archaeological subjects.

Egypt, Greece and Rome is regarded as one of the best general histories of the ancient world. It is written for the general reader and the student coming to the subject for the first time and provides a reliable and highly accessible point of entry to the period. The volume begins with the early civilizations of Sumer (modern Iraq) and continues through to the Islamic invasions and the birth of modern Europe after the collapse of the western Roman empire. The book ranges beyond political history to cover philosophy, art and literature. A wide range of maps, illustrations and photographs complements the text. The second edition incorporates new chapters on the ancient Mediterranean and the Ancient Near East, as well as extended coverage of Egypt.

5 out of 5 stars excellent read in ancient history.......2007-10-08

This is a great intro book on ancient civilizations around the mediterranean. While the subtitle is Egypt, Greece & Rome, the author goes into other, older and more distant cultures as well. The chapters are short and leisurely - you get a good feel for each section without being buried in details.

5 out of 5 stars Egypt, Greece, Rome.......2006-02-24

This book was one of the required texts for a course I took on ancient history. Egypt, Greece and Rome was the perfect text, because the book reads as a narrative; nothing in Charles Freeman's book is boring or dry. It covers Mesopotamia from 5000 BC up through the emergence of the Byzantine Empire in the fifth century AD. This book is the key to understanding ancient history, and I highly reccomend it.

Plus, there are a number of black and white and full-color plates, plus some in-text drawings and maps.

4 out of 5 stars A Gateway to the Ancient World.......2005-09-13

Charles Freeman's work, Egypt, Greece and Rome, is a long and ambitious work, intended as an undergraduate introductory text as well as a text for the layman. Works of this size and scope (over 600 pages of text and illustrations covering the Egyptian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman civilizations as well as some others) tend to leave the reader breathless as they jump from one important topic and time period to another. This is not the case with Freeman's work. He wisely juxtaposes the overviews of civilizations with interludes that highlight a small part of the civilization in greater detail.

For example, between Chapter 14 ("Religion in the Greek World") and Chapter 15 ("Athens: Democracy and Empire") is an interlude titled "The Classical Age in Art." This short section discusses the golden age of art in ancient Greece, and brings us to the modern age briefly as the art historian Johann Winckelmann is discussed in relation to his views on the age. ("Winckelmann claimed that the `sublimity' of Classical art was the result of the atmosphere of liberty and exuberance which followed the Persian Wars" 244.)

The text is very accessible, and has a generous bibliography at the end of each chapter in case one wants more. Recommended highly as an introduction to the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean.

4 out of 5 stars Decent History of Three Great Civilizations.......2005-02-22

I liked the idea of a book that includes the three great Mediterranean civilizations. The book is not too detailed and serves well as a survey, especially for novices to the subject. The book could have had a little better editing for things such as punctuation (many commas were missing where they could have made reading more easier) and better use of the words "which" and "that."

3 out of 5 stars Good but lacking coherence.......2004-01-06

This book covers Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome in three multi-chapter sections and covers the Ancient Near East, the Hellenistic world after Alexander, and Europian "barbarians" in single chapters. The main topics--Egypt, Greece, and Rome--are, I think, treated quite separately, so there is no great advantage besides convenience to grouping them in one book.

I believe that the Ancient Near East--particularly the Persians and Jews--should have been a primary focus, and probably Egypt should not have. The Persian Wars and the rise of Christianity had huge impacts on Rome and Greece, and much of Greek culture was derived from Eastern culture. Ancient Eqypt was a unique and remarkable civilization but it was relatively isolated, and certainly it is possible to understand Greece and Rome without understanding Egypt.

The basic flaw of this book is that the chapters aren't tied together and that it has no overarching vision. For example, a theme like the similarities between the Eastern, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman religions because of assimilation would have been very interesting and enlightening I think, but there is little of it.

The writing is a bit prosaic, though in general this book is written well. You can learn a lot from this book, but it is difficult to remember it all since it is too much a compendium of facts and too little a coherent story.

                                      Book Description

From their personal lives at home to their roles in the realms of religion, health, economics, governance, war, philosophy, and poetry, this is the story of ancient women in all their aspects. Vivante explores women's lives in four ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean: Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome. While the experiences of women in ancient cultures were certainly very different from those of most women today, a tendency to focus too much on negative or restrictive images has until now provided readers with a rather incomplete picture. Looking at this important era from a female-oriented perspective, Vivante widens the perceptual lens and makes it possible to highlight the fundamental empowered aspects of women's activities in order to present them in balance with the various limits imposed on their societal participation. Beginning with powerful images of goddesses and women's roles in the religious sphere, Vivante details the foundation for women's activities in all other social realms. While these four Mediterranean civilizations were distinctive, they also influenced each other through various forms of contact--trade, colonization, and war. Both the similarities and the differences permit richer comparisons and promote a deeper understanding of the lives of women in each.

The book surveys ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and examines life in various Roman provinces, such

Well, I emailed the seller of the book and they sent a reassuring email letting me know the book was on its way. I was really happy and I appreciated the very friendly email from the seller. 5 out of 5 stars Excelllent introduction to the Mediterranean civilizations.......2006-03-08

I recently purchaed this book. I find a good introduction to the Ancient Mediterranean world. Though I wish that the authors gave more information about ancient Egypt. I can now go on to more detailed history books on Egypt, Rome and Greece.

4 out of 5 stars A must for anyone developing an interest in ancient history.......2005-09-09

A good history, very readable. The authors appear to be atheists or agnostics. They to put a lot of credence into the theory of evolution. An interesting note concerning their treatment of the life of Jesus is that they note that He performed miracles. They present this as if they are reporting history without trying to come up with alternative explanations for the miracles. This may be exactly what the first century Jewish historian Josephus did when he recorded the miracles of Jesus. They are neither affirming or denying, just reporting what was believed. In all, I found the book enjoyable to read through and it is one that will be read many times in the future.

3 out of 5 stars For the learner preferring the concise........2005-08-24

This is a book that provides a very concise picture of the ancient Mediterranean world. That may be good for some people, but it wasn't good for me. I'm taking a class on western civilization and I need a narrative, less encyclopedic style of writing--a book that would draw me in and help paint a coherent story.

This book provides a concise overview. It is also very conceptual. Most of the interpretation is already done for the reader. I prefer information and data presented in a style that allows the reader to draw his/her own conclusions and make his/her own thoughts.

The sample pages posted on Amazon gave the false impression of a thought-provoking and stimulating book. However it turned out to be a book organized around facts and a hierarchy of headings and concepts. It's hard to grasp history and concepts when it is spoon-fed. This is true because reference points are lacking. The reader has a hard time relating to the information.

                                                Book Description

This book details all aspects of sequential clinical trials from preliminary planning, through the monitoring of the trial, to the final analysis of the results. Emphasis is placed on the triangular test and other procedures based on straight line stopping boundaries. These methods allow for frequent or occasional interim analyses and permit the analysis of a wide variety of patient responses. Alternative procedures are also covered in detail, and these include -spending function methods, repeated confidence intervals and Bayesian approaches to sequential clinical trials.
