Douglas Wile translates and analyzes four collections of recently released nineteenth-century manuscripts on T'ai-chi ch'uan. These writings of Wu's older brothers Ch'eng-ch'ing and Ju-ch'ing, and his nephew Li I-yu, together with the transmissions of Yang Pan-hou, represent a significant addition to the seminal literature. The rich new texts allow us to make a fresh survey of longstanding issues in T'ai-chi history: the origins of the art; the authorship of the "classics;" the differences between Wu, Yang, and Li; and the roles of Chang San-feng, Wang Tsung-yueh, Chiang Fa, and the formerly missing link, Ch'ang Nai-chou. The original Chinese texts of the four new sets of classics have been appended for the convenience of Chinese readers and scholars.

The book reconsiders the world of the Wu, Yang, and Li families of Yung-nien and reconstructs it against the background of the Opium Wars, the Taiping Rebellion, and the decline of the Manchu dynasty. New biographical sources illuminate the domestic and political lives of the Yung-nien circle and their orientation to the late imperial intellectual trends. The development of T'ai-chi ch'uan in the nineteenth century is explored in the context of China's cultural response to the challenge of the West and the role of body-centered arts in Asia during the drive for independence and the ongoing search for national identity.

Serious Tai Chi.......2000-04-18

In a market saturated with nonsense that passes as tai chi, it is refreshing that someone has taken the trouble to publish something as potentially useful as this book. Not only does it provide several very old texts on tai chi which were written by acknowledged masters, but it also explores the history of tai chi in a more scholarly manner, rather than passing on half truths about "my teacher once told me that his teacher told him...". Thanks to Douglas Wile for raising the bar on tai chi literature in the US. Hope to see more like this one.

Terrific guide and wonderful information.......2002-06-15

I bought this book because I have had the good fortune to work on a number of teams at the b-school with a number of students from China. It seemed to me that I could benefit from knowing more about the China of today rather than the Red China I grew up with.

The value of this book can best be described by the reaction of the Chinese students to it. They couldn't put it down. They flipped from topic to topic and talked about it with each other and with me. They praised the articles the book contains.

It isn't a narrative. It is a series of articles on important topics and arranged alphabetically. It contains many valuable maps, photos, and diagrams. You can dive in the book anywhere and jump around to find things that interest you and just enjoy this book over and over again. Well done!

First-rate.......2002-04-22

This is a first-rate guidebook to the politics and economy of China in the 21st Century. From the Boxer Rebellion to the return of Hong Kong, here is the entire drama of modern China in a useful and readable dictionary format. Hutchings describes the country province-by-province, giving the reader insight into lesser-known areas of the country.

Optimal for beginners in the field.......2007-05-14

Judging from this volume, Annett seems to be a great teacher and a great writer.

The distance between the material covered here and actual research is quite large, but that's OK, since the book is advertised as a pedagogical introduction, and it is really good at that.

Every chapter includes a number of smartly-chosen problems, the solutions to which are given in an Appendix.

I have given the book 4 stars instead of 5, because it suffers from horrendous copy-editing. Grammatical mistakes, typos in equations, wrong references to previous equations (and the list goes on). One gets the feeling that the publisher received the author's manuscript and published it as is. This makes it very difficult to understand why it's so expensive. Hopefully these errors will be removed in a future edition.

a nice introduction to this subject.......2005-02-08

As most of the books of this serie, this one is also a successful introduction to the desired subject.
The text is very pedagogical and the author never avoids a calculation which leads to an important result. Every formula is generally commented in order to extract the physics behind.
All the important subjects related to BEC are touched. The main core of the book seems ,for me, understandable by a good undergraduate student.
Of course that won't make you a specialist of this wide subject which required a lot of knowledges from different parts of physics , but at least the most important things will be kwnown and you will have the sufficent stuff to go more deeply in the subject of your choice with the required litterature ( which may be found in the bibliography of the book).
I think it deserves its five stars since the objectives of the books (being an clear introduction without being to light) are definitly reached. Definitly a nice book !
