the drop in the rate and amount of personal saving He uses economic analysis to show how those and other developments affect the economy. Taking a look at the future including the impact of the Government's social insurance programs and their deficits, Whalen projects what the national economy will look like in 2040. Does he foresee disaster? No, and readers will find the reasoning he uses to reach that conclusion both enlightening and fascinating.

Understand the Law: Start Here.......2004-11-05
I was casting about for a book to recommend to a group of forensic scientists to help them understand the law more than I was able to convey in a short speech. Then I found this book in the public library, and it answered the need. In spades. It is a textbook, but like law school textbooks, it follows the case-study method, which I think is good. The author addresses not only the major categories of law--contracts, property, torts, criminal law and procedure, et al.-but also starts with an enlightening and useful chapter on the philosophical and historical underpinnings of the law. Showing that he is up to date, he includes chapters on administrative law and employment law, which I haven't seen in other books in this category. A useful book for any citizen trying to understand the American legal system. For a more text-oriented book, but also of high quality, try Feinman, Law 101, isbn 019 513 265 3

I rate this book very low because I couldn't receive the edition of the book which is the most important information about any book. I feel if you put the edition of the book in your information, it will better help your shoppers. Buying the wrong book can delay a student's work progress in school.

Book Description
Purinergic receptors are proteins that bind ATP as their extracellular ligand. Once thought only as an intracellular molecule that provides energy, ATP is also now considered an essential autocrine/paracrine agonist that acts extracellularly within tissues and tissue microenvironments. Receptors for ATP and its metabolites, so-called "purinergic receptors," are essential membrane receptors that transduce the extracellular signal carried by ATP. Many cell types or tissues express multiple types of these receptors, often on the same cell. This volume will cover the history and overall impact of extracellular ATP signaling, methods to detect ATP release and signaling, the molecular and cell biology of purinergic receptors, the pharmacology of purinergic receptors, the ion channel biophysics and biochemistry of P2X purinergic receptor channels, and the physiology and pathophysiology of purinergic receptors.
Key Features
* Organized and written by world-renowned experts
* Covers state-of-the-art experimental methods

Book Description
Over the last three decades the process industries have grown very rapidly, with corresponding increases in the quantities of hazardous materials in process, storage or transport. Plants are becoming larger and are often situated in or close to densely
populated areas. Increased hazard of loss of life or property is continually highlighted with incidents such as Flixborough, Bhopal, Chernobyl and Piper Alpha.
Increasing attention must therefore be paid to the control of these hazards, and in particular the need to develop a comprehensive approach to the avoidance of human and economic loss; this is loss prevention. Frank Lees has completely rewritten this classic reference work on loss prevention, bringing every aspect up to date. New chapters are included on computers, artificial intelligence and expert systems, and new appendices feature recent disasters such as Bhopal and Piper Alpha. The many thousands of references have been updated along with standards and codes of practice. Written in a clear and concise style, 'Loss Prevention in the Process Industries' covers traditional areas of personal safety as well as the more technological aspects and thus provides balanced and in-depth coverage of the whole field of safety and loss prevention.

Loss Prevention Bible.......2004-10-19
F.P. Lees Loss Prevention provides the fundamentals for any viable prevention program throughout all segments of industry. It covers recognized good engineering practices that can transform a good company into a GREAT company through protection of profits from unintended incidents, downtime, and litigation costs. These volumes cover it all and are as critical to a corporation's bottom line as any financial manual.

Warmth Disperses and Time Passes deals with, among other things, "Maxwell's Demon," a metaphorical device invented by James Clerk Maxwell a century and a half ago in an attempt to expose flaws in the second law of thermodynamics. This imaginary demon would sit between two flasks of air and allow only warm air molecules to enter the warmer flask. This would cause heat to flow uphill--a death knell for the second law if it were possible. Only it wasn't; it was the death knell for the demon instead. Successive "improved" demons were invented by later physicists, but all have subsequently been killed. The realization that a live demon is impossible has served to further strengthen the second law.
Hans von Baeyer is almost as much historian as scientist. As he walks us through the evolution of scientific understanding of thermodynamics, he stops to dwell on the intellectual and societal framework that allowed the physicists of the time to make their respective scientific leaps. This blend of science and history, combined with von Baeyer's journalistic approach, creates a book that is both exceedingly accessible and surprisingly illuminating. --Eric Warner
Book Description
If you want to know what's happening in the world, follow the heat.
Why can't your coffee "steal" heat from the air to stay piping hot? Why can't Detroit make a car that's 100 percent efficient? Why can't some genius make a perpetual motion machine? The answers lie in the field of thermodynamics, the study of heat, which turns out to be the key to an astonishing number of scientific puzzles, including why time inexorably runs in only one direction.
In
Warmth Disperses and Time Passes: The History of Heat, physics professor Hans Christian von Baeyer tells the story of heat through the lives of the scientists who discovered it. With his trademark elegant prose, eye for lively detail, and gift for lucid explanation, Professor von Baeyer turns the contemplation of a cooling coffee cup into a beguiling portrait of the birth of a science with relevance to almost every aspect of our lives.

strong content in a weak book binding........2007-05-17
apart from that the author used very uncommon vocabulary frequently,
the content is clearly five stars.
i never liked thermodynamics during my bachelor study, but after i read that book i admit that it is fabulous, and now the book is just separate papers out of its binding ! weeeeeee, man it's terrible binding!!!!!!!!
after all , thanks Hans.
Warmth Disperses and Time Passes.......2007-01-10
Also titled Temperature and Time Flow Down in Europe; Bayer does an excellent job in explaining this physical phenomenon. I heartily recommend this book for armatures, students, and physicists wanting a fresh perspective.
Missing equations.......2004-12-25
An interesting book giving a historical overview.
I have to warn the interested people that the book
is lacking equations.
The only one I found was e=mc*c
If the reader has a rudimentary understanding of mathematics
than (s)he will miss the equations.
On the Trail of a Demonic Idea.......2002-05-30
This is an enjoyable history of thermodynamics. Maxwell's Demon does not actually come into it until about half-way through, and then becomes, gradually, the focus. Von Baeyer's approach is to advance his topic short chapter by short chapter. Each chapter treats the work of a man (alas, in science women have not, until recently, played much of a part) as it relates to the growing knowledge of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The ideas, the experiments, the intellectual milieu, and the subject's life are all fair game in these little essays, and all are treated in a clear, serious, but still light-hearted way. The writing is very pleasing, the author's humane, humorous and cultured personality shines through.
The point of the book, of course, is to explore the Second Law of Thermodynamics, using the Demon invented by the physicist Maxwell. It has proved a remarkably troublesome sprite in spite of all the attempts to exorcise it over the years. Here you will learn some thermodynamics and some history, and when you are done you will have a general idea of the issues swirling around the notion of entropy. After reading this book, you very well might want to get your feet wet in an introductory text on thermodynamics, now that you know some of the issues in play. Or, if you already know some, this will fill in the human background, and may alert you to some current thinking.
One of the current issues is the relationship between the entropy from Information Theory and the entropy from Thermodynamics. As various folks keep trying to conflate them, our author reports on it. The discussion is detailed enough to actually convey some of the ideas that trouble modern researchers, and tantalizing enough to make the reader want to know even more. What else could one want from a popular book on the subject?
Excellent.......2002-04-14
A beautiful book that explains thermodynamics clearly for the layman. I also purchased the author's other book "Taming the atom" which was yet another masterpiece.

shifting interludes.......2002-12-03
Jack Bales has done it! His "Shifting Interludes", is a masterpiece, a grand compulation of Willie Morris'essays. Mr. Bales' talent and ability has proven itself and is only equaled by Willie Morris' skill in the form of the essay. I would recommend this whole heartedly to any one who lived through the turbulent times Willie Morris writes of, or who simply enjoys fine reading and craftsmanshift in books. A must read and a fine gift.

Great book.......2005-09-16
I read this book as part of a class I took on Latin American history, and was quite impressed. This book covers the area between the Rio Grande to the southern tip of S. America from the decades just prior to Columbus to the eve of the Great Depression. Within its pages, the book covers the major topics of latin american history and culture such as slavery, race relations, colonialism, socialist movements, land reform, peasant - landlord relations, native rights, and civil wars. Many famous individuals are highlighted such as Simon Bolivar, Pancho Villa, Peron, General Santa Ana, various conquistadors and church leaders, and artists and writers. The book provides insightful discussion of long-running issues such as native rights, and economic reform vis-a-vis land reform / redistribution. All in all, a good book to read.
Mining for History in Latin America.......2000-03-28
This is an outstanding book, at the same time sweeping and universal as at is nuanced and paying particular attention to the impact of history on individuals and the impact of individuals on history. Professor Bakewell's career as a Latin Americanist historian had been highlighted by his work on the mining region of the city and state of Zacatecas, Mexico, and the important role that it played in financing the Spanish colonial enterprise. While the economic, industrial, and social dimensions of mining are well treated in this volume, this same thorough effort is transferred to other aspects of the history of this vast region of the world stretching from what is now the continental U.S. (California and the U.S. Southwest) to the southernmost tip of South America! The introductions both to the text and to each chapter are particularly strong, while the discussion of economics is written in such a way that will be both of great value to scholars in the field, as well as for general readers. Dr. Bakewell is obviously at the top of his game. Again, the strongest part of this book is how it conveys a solid vision of the past, all the while, engaging the reader. I recommend it to all my students. Nice balance between the universal and the specific! Nice illustrations, solid treatment of Brazil (an area often neglected by Latin Americanists).

A Decent Intro.......2006-05-12
This book is very easy to follow and would be good for someone unfamiliar with game theory. I bought it because I thought I didn't know anything about the subject, but it surprised me. While you're reading it you may find out, as I did, that you're well aware with many of the concepts presented in this book if you've read other books that have indirectly addressed them, which is probably what spawned your interest in the first place.
For an introduction or somthing for both beginners & advanced, I'd look for something else. I'd suggest one but I'm looking for the same.
A concise, colorful and illuminating introduction to two-players Game Theory .......2005-09-23
Definitely a must reading if you are interested in game theory, conflict resolution or behavioral science. This very enjoyable book is full of interesting and colorful examples to illustrate each covered topic.
Rapoport combines an interesting and rare mix of skills: a mathematical expertise, an extensive and deep knowledge of behavioral science and an amenable writing style. The result is little-great book that knits together work in decision-making, psychology, strategic thinking and pure game theory. In this remarkable and illuminating text the relevant concepts are introduced in a very clear way. In the last chapter the author offers a critical review assessing strong and weaknesses of Game Theory for purposes of modeling human behavior and situations characterized by conflicts of interest. The main conclusion is a remarkable one: the great value of game theory is in its power to reveal its own incompleteness.
The starting point book for learning game theory.......2004-10-22
If you want to learn the underlying foundations of game theory, and do not want anything over-technical or under-technical in its explanation and description, then this is a good book to consider. Most introductory game theory books usually plunge you into the math immediately and the remaining few use very little of it and focus on the qualitative aspects. If you're looking for a book that can both teach you game theory and the math behind it, but assumes all you know is the math you know or remember was from high school, then Two-Person Game Theory is what you've been looking for. This book begins essentially with no usage of mathematical jargon whatsoever and slowly works in the math a little more each chapter. By the last third of the book, there is substantial use of math in each chapter, but by then it is understandable because of this slowly increasing dosage you've been exposed to while reading. In any case, the mathematical background requirements of the reader is minimal. For most of the book all you will encounter are basic concepts of probability, with some simple algebra and a few instances of calculus used in the later chapters, though these parts aren't integral for overall understanding if you're just getting into game theory. However, the author also provides a verbal account for the rationale and underlying logic for every mathematical equation and representation he introduces. Overall, this is an excellent introductory book, especially if you're intimidated by math but still want to learn about game theory and the math behind it.
Book Description
The revised and updated edition of this popular German textbook is unique in its emphasis on algorithmic methods and in its original use of Mathematica as a tool to obtain solutions to game-theoretical models.
Resolving Conflicts with Mathematica begins with the basic theory of extensive and normal form games, as well as introducing the fundamental concept of Nash equilibria. The restriction to two-person games helps to make the material more digestible for the beginner. In later chapters the subtleties of degenerate games are discussed thoroughly. Many aspects of equilibrium selection theory are treated, including algorithms for determining evolutionary stable equilibria in biology. Finally, the book looks at the wide-scale application of game theory to practical conflict situations.
Resolving Conflicts with Mathematica includes a set of Mathematica programs which implement all of the algorithms described in the text. Exercises are closely integrated with the book's material and Mathematica 'notebooks' are supplied with each of the chapters.
Facilitates interactive learning with a free CD-ROM containing;
• all Mathematica programs
• chapter-by-chapter examples and exercises
• full solutions to exercises
• Provides realistic examples of applications of game theory, including discussions of Poker and Othello.

Book Description
The purpose of the book is to present the basic results in the theory of two-person zero-sum repeated games including stochastic games and repeated games with incomplete information. It underlines their relation through the operator approach and covers both asymptotic and uniform properties. The monograph is self-contained including presentation of incomplete information games, minmax theorems and approachability results. It is adressed to graduate students with no previous knowledge of the field.
Book Description
This book deals with two- and three-person bargaining games in characteristic function form and presents two new descriptive theories, the Negotiation Agreement Area and the Proportional Division Payoff Bounds (PDPB). The evaluation of data for two-person games leads to a new descriptive theory called Negotiation Agreement Area which combines the influence of power and justice norms. The main emphasis of the book is on a new descriptive theory for three-person games, the PDPB. Comparison with other theories on the basis of 3088 plays of different games shows that the PDPB are significantly more successful in prediction than other theories. The PDPB concept is a modification and extension of Selten's Equal Division Payoff Bounds. The determination of the bounds is based on general principles and not on the estimation of parameters. From aspiration levels which depend on power, justice norms, and other reasonable principles the negotiation process leads to a proportional division of the prize.

Customer Reviews:
Economics of global warming made accessible.......2004-05-16
Samuel Fankhauser is among the top few economists research the economic effects of climate change. "Valuing Climate Change: the Economics of the Greenhouse" provides a detailed assessment of Fankhauser's work in this area. Whether you are new to this topic or looking to supplement other works in this area, I reccomend that you pick up a copy of this book.
In "Valuing Climate Change," Fankhauser provides a fine description of some of the potential costs of global warming, including agricultural losses, coastal threats due to rising sea level, increased energy costs, health impacts, etc. His text decribes the problems in clear, understandable language, and is supplemented with charts, graphs, and tables for those with a more graphically-oriented minds. Fankhauser then outlines his model for estimating costs, presents his results, and uses the results for a cost-benefit analysis of some of the options available to policymakers.
As a side note, Fankhauser's methodical approach to this work, clearly and concisely written, makes this book a good choice for those wanting to gain an understanding of the basics process of statistical modelling. It is neither overly technical (although additional technical detail can be found in the appendicies) nor overly vague with respect to Fankhauser's methods and data.
As a first selection for those seeking to explore at a scholarly, academic level the topic of economic costs of global warming, I would reccomend William Nordhaus' "Warming the World," which is more current and more rigorous in its analysis. (Both books arrive at qualitatively similar conclusions that efficient abatement policies provide net positive effects and need not be too expensive.) As a supplement, or to those who wish to benefit from Fankhauser's more accessible writing and increased attention to political aspects (e.g., cooperative vs. non-cooperative equilibria), "Valuing Climate Change" is a good choice.
