    Book Description

Professor Majewski compares Virginia and Pennsylvania to explain how slavery undermined the development of the southern economy. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, residents in each state financed transportation improvements to raise land values and spur commercial growth. However, by the 1830s, Philadelphia capitalists began financing Pennsylvania's railroad network, building integrated systems that reached the Midwest. Virginia's railroads remained a collection of lines without western connections. The lack of a major city that could provide capital and traffic for large-scale railroads was the weakness of Virginia's slave economy.

            Book Description

The production of a vast array of chemicals, especially petroleum compounds during the last century, has caused a serious deterioration in environmental quality. In this context, one major threat is posed by the continually expanding areas of contaminated soils and sediments.

Biotechnological methods based on the biodegradation of environmental pollutants or phytoremediation of persistent organic contaminants and metals are being developed. Bioremediation has been used successfully to remediate many petroleum-contaminated sites. However, there are as yet no commercial technologies commonly used to remediate the most recalcitrant contaminants, such as explosives, pesticides and metallic pollutants. Nevertheless, bioremediation is a rapidly advancing field and new bio-based remedial technologies are continuing to emerge. For this volume, a number of experts from universities, government laboratories and industry, have contributed chapters on innovative methods in bioremediation and phytoremediation.

                  Book Description

The present book represents a compilation of the major contributions of a NATO workshop on: Bioremediation of soils contaminated with aromatic compounds and took place in Tartu, Estonia. It demonstrated the importance and necessity of interdisciplinary research in modern environmental biotechnology. Next to the classical fields (microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology) other aspects such as genome analysis and bioinformatics will become much more important in the near future. All aspects of this development are represented in the volume. Therefore, it can be seen as a major step forward as it fostered an intensive discussion between scientists of all these fields of environmental biotechnology.

                          Description:
Several sites that are contaminated with isomers of the chlorinated insecticide hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) are present across the globe and cause toxicity. For their bioremediation, we studied the degradation of HCH-isomers in contaminated soils by an isolate Pseudomonas aeruginosa ITRC-5. The degradation is optimal at 2mg technical-HCH (t-HCH)/g soil, 15% water content, pH 8.0, temperature 28^oC and inoculum density 10^6 colony forming unit/g soil. Under these conditions, from 5kg soil, >98% @a- and @c-HCH, 17% @b-HCH and 76% @d-HCH are degraded after 15 days of incubation, which is accompanied with the release of 600@mg chloride/mg t-HCH. Concomitant to the degradation, a four-fold reduction in the toxicity of HCH-isomers to earthworm, Eisenia foetida, is also observed. Addition of ITRC-5 enhanced the degradation of soil-applied HCH-isomers in 'open field' conditions as well, and 97%, 43%, 94% and 77% of @a-, @b-, @c- and @d-HCH, respectively, are degraded after 12 weeks of incubation. Thus, the bacterium causes microbial degradation and detoxification of HCH-isomers, and can be used for the bioremediation of contaminated soils.

Mixtures of a sandy soil and wheat straw were doped with the organochlorine insecticide lindane in glass tubes and were inoculated with the polypore fungus, Ganoderma australe. An evaluation of bioremediation process effectiveness was searched and five parameters identified for the solid-state system. Fungi growth is a function of temperature and requires moisture for a proper colonization. These microorganisms need inorganic nutrients such nitrogen and phosphorus to support cell growth and it is also appropriate to know the range of concentration and toxicity of the used insecticide. Thus, an orthogonal central composite design (CCD) of experiments was used to construct second order response surfaces. Five design factors, namely temperature, moisture, straw, lindane content and nitrogen content and seven optimization parameters (responses), namely lag time, propagation velocity, biomass growth rate, biodegradation rate, biodegradation/biomass, biomass/propagation and biomass content were analyzed. The optima of the responses of the adequate models were found to be the following: propagation velocity 4.25mm/day, biomass growth rate 408mg/day, biodegradation/biomass 56.9@mg/g, biomass/propagation 250mg/mm and fungal biomass content in solid mixture 260mg/cm^3. The most important response for bioremediation purposes is biodegradation/biomass which is maximized at the factors levels: temperature 17.3^oC, moisture 58%, straw content 45%, lindane content 13ppm and nitrogen content 8.2ppm.

The book is really just a basic physics book. It teaches pretty clearly. Most physics classes are broken up into two semesters. This makes getting the book in parts a really good idea, especially if you are only taking one of the halves. Each of the books that contain a part have all the same page numbers, appendixes, and answers to homework questions that the large hardbacked book has.

No other book on the market today can match the success of Halliday, Resnick and Walker's Fundamentals of Physics! In a breezy, easy-to-understand style the book offers a solid understanding of fundamental physics concepts, and helps readers apply this conceptual understanding to quantitative problem solving.

                                  3 out of 5 stars NOT a beginner's book.......2005-10-04

The first physics course I've ever taken used this very textbook. If you are about to be in the same boat as I was, let me tell you this: this is NOT a good introductory physics text. If you're not one of the kids who took AP Physics in high school, you will probably struggle with this book unless you have a very amazing professor.

Most of the formulas are given as "this is the general formula, and here's how we derive the other formulas from this". There's very little explanation involved with concepts, and when the author tries they are extremely hazy. This book apparently assumes that you've learned every concept before, and that you only need a brief overview and a table of formulas.

Not to completely bash this book - far from it. Formulas are listed in an organized and comprehensive fashion, and useful derivations are given also. If I need to look up a physics formula, this is the book I use as it's actually faster than sifting through Google. Beware, though, if this is your first endeavour into the world of physics.

                                  2 out of 5 stars What a Struggle.......2005-03-20

I'm using this book for a distance learning course in physics. I suspect it was not written for distance learning. I often find it hard to relate the answers to chapter problems to the explanations in the text. I also have a copy of Cutnell & Johnson's Physics 6th edition. The thinking in the latter is a lot easier to follow.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good, beginners may need extra help with it.......2004-08-20

i'm using this book as a main source for preparing for the physics GRE exam, and i'm finding that it is getting me up to speed for the exam. my previous academic background is actually math/german/finance, but i can tell you that the math background is what makes working with this book fairly successful. i'm pretty much a sucker for big, pretty books anyway, but i really can tell that this one is definitely helping me learn basic physics- fairly good examples, lots of problems, and interesting introductions to each chapter to captivate your attention and motivate you to continue studying. if you're a freshman taking using this book for a course, i would suggest you consult your professor regularly and get help whenever something is not quite clear- it's probably a royal pain in the neck to take physics I/II and calc concurrently, so i can totally understand those of you without the complete math background having trouble with this material- i know i did 20 years ago as an undergrad, and it made me really dislike physics at that time. i don't know what calc classes are like these days, but i would strongly recommend at least 3 semesters of calculus before embarking on a course that uses this book- it'll make your learning experience much more intense, and you'll get a lot more from the book and will be able to appreciate it much more. Oh, and you may just want to try and order the international edition from abroad (Europe, for example)- it's about $100 less than the U.S. price and still has the same content!

                                  2 out of 5 stars Highly overrated.......2004-07-04

Alright, so of course this is the book required by just about every college in the country these days in their introductory physics courses---well, it shouldn't be. The authors certainly provide mathematical motivation for the concepts they cover, but certainly don't give adequate real-world motivation for concepts. Oh yeah, so, as one idiot reviewer who thinks he's some kind of precocious student said, this book helped him and his high school buddies get fives on the AP Test---WELL BIG DEAL IDIOT!!! GOOD FOR YOU!! I only managed to do that in my freshman year of highschool so I guess it must be really hard or something--*cough* Well, in the real world of people who actually know anything about physics or math or any field, getting a five on the AP exam in highschool isn't anything special. Basically, this book will prepare you to pass exams and standardized tests--it won't give you understanding. For that, go somewhere worthwhile---for example, the Feynman Lectures on Physics, all three volumes of which cost about half as much as Halliday and Resnick's book.

                                  1 out of 5 stars is this a money-making gimmick or what?.......2004-05-07

Our physics department decided to switch to this book last year, and I have been trying to figure out which edition to buy.. "extended enhanced problem edition", "extended", "enhanced"? How about throwing in a student's companion text that contains "chapter extensions?"? What about getting the right Solutions manual? only 30% of the solutions are in it? And now I just found out they have published (another?) new 7th edition which no doubt will have a brand new array of essential supplements and extensions. Why all these editions and supplements?

This is Burgess doing busywork. He is fast and quick and he covers the ninety- nine novels he selects with his usual, intelligence and verve. But the work as another Amazon reviewer pointed out lacks depth and conviction. This is the kind of work read for a brilliant remark here or a laugh there, but not for any kind of great understanding of the works involved. It is something like reading an almanac only with the almanac writer not being anonymous and grey, but rather interesting and original.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars Anthony Burgess's Reading List.......2001-08-16

I happened upon 99 NOVELS THE BEST IN ENGLISH SINCE 1939 last week as I browsed my library network's catalog. I devoured this book in a matter of a few hours.

The book consists of one introductory essay and 99 very brief book reviews. According to Burgess's introduction, for poetic reasons, he restricted the scope of his list to novels written after the beginning of WWII and before "the nonfulfillment of a nightmare" (l984). His definition of "novel" is narrow. For example, in his review of George Orwell's l984, he notes that ANIMAL FARM was a much greater work and goes on to state that he couldn't include it in his list because it is a fable rather than a novel. Ironically, Burgess does include William Golding's LORD OF THE FLIES and Malcolm Lowry's UNDER THE VOLCANO, both of which are allegories.

I don't agree with all of Burgess's selections, nor do I agree with everything he writes in his reviews. Regardless, his reviews are outstanding, enjoyable, often hilarious and always intellectually stimulating. Two very interesting aspects of Burgess's reviews are, first, that he sees intellectual value in everything he reads (I envy him) and, second, he finds something similar to Joyce's ULYSSES in everything he reads.

What I like best about Burgess's reviews is that I kept thinking to myself "I've gotta read that book". My list of "must reads" is now twenty-one books longer than it was two days ago.

3 out of 5 stars written in 83, so it may be outdated.......2001-08-16

I'm not sure how to feel about this short book of burgess. i admire the man and his work, but you have to wonder about some of his choices. there are so many great books and authors that aren't included in his choices, though i could see the difficulty in picking one book a year. it is interesting to see how burgess' mind works, and the choices he makes, but it is only of interest of a burgess scholar.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars 99 Novels.......2001-07-20

I found this book in the early eighties, while living in New York. I loved Anthony Burgess for his erudition, his musical background, his love of Joyce, his brilliant, playful writing (Clockwork Orange) his knowledge of history and his ability to go on talk shows in the seventies and be smarter then anybody else but also completely down to earth. In the pages of 99 Novels are just those qualities.

This book -- a kind of "minute history" of literature since 1939 -- sent me scurrying into used book stores like a field mouse. His brief, paragraph long summaries of the "most influential" books since WW2 (starting with Finnegan's Wake) are provocative, funny, opinionated with a look to the long view as well. How broad was his taste? The Joyce scholar makes an argument for Raymond Chandler's Long Goodbye as the best American Novel of the nineteen fifties. He also covers Norman Mailer, Brian Aldiss, Mary McCarthy, Brian Moore, Ian Flemming, Orwell, Ballard, Huxley, Murdoch, Roth, Greene...etc.

In short, you can take this as a brilliant and unpretentious field guide from a writer who loved and knew literature and the English language quite unlike anybody else around. Burgess never lost sight of the fact that the novel is one of mankind's greatest inventions, and he proves it with this book.

3 out of 5 stars interesting but shallow.......1999-12-05

Burgess is always worth a look, but this slim volume is not among his better works. He names 99 novels, from Joyce to Mailer, that he claims exemplify the best in the English language since 1939. Some of the selections are predictable (Finnegans Wake, Gravity's Rainbow), others may raise eyebrows (Goldfinger, Giles Goat Boy).

Like all lists, Burgess' makes you wonder why one book is included while another is not. This is generally not a fruitful way of judging these works. Rather, the fault in Burgess' list is that his reviews of each book (usually less than a page each) are too brief to be of much value. In this volume we get to hear only the faintest murmur of what I'm sure was a great din of opinions on this outspoken writer's mind.
