Redistributing your Wealth from the Government To You.......2004-08-09
This is a nice fast read on how we should reduce government control of our money and give it back to the citizens, empowering them to make their own decisions about how their own money should be spent. The government has not been a good steward of our money as far as benefitting its citizens and Genetski mentions that only you know what is in your own best interest, not the government. The book represents the more sensible side of libertarianism.
The best way for us become millionaires by the end of our working lives is to reform the pyramid scam of social security by having us invest our money in our own private retirement accounts where we would gain interest on our own investments over time. As it is now, the social security system is bankrupt and there is no money being invested for our future retirements, but we are only paying for the benefits of retirees living now. Genetski has a fair plan for what to do with retirees' benefits now. Chile and other South American countries have already achieved positive results by privatizing their social security system and avoiding the waste. mismanagement, and scams that governments inevitably create.
The next area that needs to be reformed is health care in which citizens should be able to have their own private investment accounts to provide for their own health care. As it is now, the government-funded healthcare system is causing costs to skyrocket and decisions about your healthcare are beginning to made by bureaucrats, not by you as a citizen. Part of being a free citizen is having the ability to make your own decisions about your retirement, education, and healthcare and not having the government decide for you.
Other reforms which would help us get our wealth back from the government is privatizing education, doing cost/benefit analysis on regulations, making environmentalism market-based, and achieving tort reform in the legal system.
As far as educational reform goes, Genetski proves his point that private education is cheaper and better than public education. The money sunk into public education should be given to the citizen to make their own decisions about which schools they should give their money to. Such a system would produce the excellence that competition between schools would bring. The near monopoly of public education now is giving us an inferior education at a high price.
Genetski proves that even the lowest paid worker can end up a millionaire at the end of his working life, if these reforms are made. If only our government had our best interests in mind and there weren't special interests blocking our way, I suppose these reforms could be made much more quickly.
Brilliant book.......2003-11-23
Shows how just about anyone can retire a millionaire. They only thing which stands in your way is the fat-beyond-belief, completely ineffective and clumsy Uncle Sam. Imagine a whole nation of millionaires (and that's with very low or no inflation). The fact is - it's 100% doable, read the book and you'll find out how.
A political blueprint for restoring the American dream.......2001-05-02
Amidst declining prosperity, stagnating economic growth, and lower savings rate - a large portion of America's population is faced with little or no money for retirment and stagnating income that loses to inflation. Genetski offers a true vision of the American Dream - repealing the sacred cows of the New Deal and the Great Society in favor of an opportunity society where we the people gain unprecentdented control of our destiny and our money. In this opportunity society, "the private, productive work force is so attractive, no one can afford to be left out." Among the remedies in this free-market prescription our: Social Security privatization, medical savings accounts, reforming the education system and tort law. There is in an old saying that when you subsidize failure and poverty you get more of both- vis-a-vis, when you subsidize savings and investment capital, you should more prosperity.

Book Description
Despite being commonplace in American households a generation ago, corporal punishment of children has been subjected to criticism and shifting attitudes in recent years. Many school districts have banned it, and many child advocates recommend that parents no longer spank or strike their children. In this book, social theorist Michael Donnelly and family violence expert Murray A. Straus tap the expertise of social science scholars and researchers who address issues of corporal punishment, a subject that is now characterized as a key issue in child welfare.
The contributors discuss corporal punishment, its use, causes, and consequences, drawing on a wide array of comparative, psychological, and sociological theories. Together, they clarify the analytical issues and lay a strong foundation for future research and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Book Description
Students of physiology are faced with more quantitative information such as ion concentrations, fluid volumes and blood pressures than ever before. Here, using simple calculations, the reader has an opportunity to develop a feel for such figures, give them meaning, and above all to derive fresh insights from them. These calculations are neither brain-teasers nor mere practical exercises, and require little more than easy arithmetic. Guidance is also given on the tricks of approximation and back-of-envelope arithmetic and on coping with the varied systems of units that encumber physiology. The main areas covered are energy metabolism, nerve and muscle, blood and the cardiovascular system, respiration, renal function, body fluids and acid–base balance. The book is intended as supplementary reading for students of physiology at any level, including graduates who seek new slants on the subject.

The Einstein Paradox: And Other Science Mysteries Solved by Sherlock Holmes
ASIN: 0201461390 |
Book Description
This is the story of the great paradigm shifts of science, told as never before: in Sherlock Holmes adventures set amid the grandeur and squalor of Victorian London. FROM PARADIGMS PAST... The first stories involve the overthrow of ancient fallacies. For example, a death by heat-stroke is blamed on a wandering cloud of phlogiston - but will this explanation stand up to Sherlock Holmes's scrutiny? ....THROUGH RELATIVITY... Subsequent cases turn on problems of relative motion and timing, culminating in a terrifying question: just how much energy do the laws of physics allow an Anarchist bomb the size of a grapefruit to contain? .... TO QUANTUM THEORY More subtle crimes relate to quantum effects. A crooked lottery offering impossibly good odds turns out to involve the spooky 'quantum links' of the EPR paradox. The strangest story is based on real life: a physicist at the Santa Fe Institute was challenged to prove his faith in a widely accepted interpretation of quantum theory in the only way possible - by taking part in a bizarre game of Russian roulette. He declined. But here, the challenge is accepted...
Customer Reviews:
Not Holmes.......2001-03-13
First, I must warn you: this is not a Sherlock Holmes book. It is a science book using Sherlock Holmes charecters. It is also not realistic, in that there are anumber impossible situations (like a century-old atom bomb accidentaly being set off), and many scientific priciples discussed were not discovered until decades after the victorian era (the setting for the book) However, this does not make it a bad book. In fact it is an excelent book. It does a great job of explaining physics principles, even quantum mechanics, enjoyably and in layman's terms. It would probably be enjoyable for both adults who want to get an overall idea of the more unusual physics and for teaching high-school level physics. The earlier chapters can be used with younger students. Overall, a very good book.
Strange way to give physics lessons.......2001-01-22
This book has been languishing on my shelf for some time, so I finally gritted my teeth and read it.
When I ordered it, I didn't realise it was written to explain the nature of Relativity and Quantum Physics to those who aren't mathematically inclined. I was looking for more Sherlock Holmes stories to read, and so this book was a disappointment. (One of the reasons for writing this review is to allow others to know what it is before they buy it.)
Having read it, I'm still disappointed. While Colin Bruce does a decent job in explaining physics for the layman, I wasn't overly thrilled with his attempts to portray Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, Professor Challenger and Professor Summerlee, all characters created by the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Their portrayal is variable, and bends to suit the explanatory purpose of the book rather than remaining true to the characters.
Given that the book is et in Victorian London, its explanation of scientific theories that weren't derived until decades later is also disappointing. Had the minds featured in the book been able to come up with the theories that they did before 1901, we'd be more advanced than we are.
Possibly useful to help explain physics to the layman, but not much use for Sherlock Holmes aficionados.
Its yet another way to get physics to "non-physics" type........1999-01-05
I love using this book in my high school classroom. I can reach students who normally think physics is boring and I can really appeal to the super geeks (like me.)
Awesome and exhilarating........1997-12-12
The strange case about physics is that the universe itself is stranger than one imagines, so that even after solving the mystery, the universe still seems wonderfully mysterious. As Sherlock Holmes observes, when you are left with only one explanation that is possible, then thats it, however improbable and strange it may be. You will never have a better ride through a better set of stories.
A great supplementary book for any physics course!.......1997-07-04
This book is great! As a physics teacher I plan on using many of the stories to add interest and depth to the different concepts we cover in the physics courses offered at our school. Most of the stories are very clever as well as very entertaining. I particulary enjoyed the story in which the mystery is solved by the realization that a person has been killed by a Focault pendulum which has rotated away from the scene of the accident

the face of XX century.......2001-02-04
This very short century, that begins in 1918 and ends with of Berlin's wall, has its most formidable days pictured in this "saga" about the struggle between totalitarian and democratic states. Still very much mistaken about the former URSS and "socialist paradise" as the tactical alliance imposed at the time of WW2, the facts depicted in these books bring back times that should not be forgotten. The plot is good, although it takes, I believe, some kind of previous knowledge about those days to be followed. All in all, it is perhaps the best and more comprehensive novel, or sequence of novels, about an era that makes the main part of the last century, and will certainly be an important part of future appreciation of our time.

Asimov -- brilliant but difficult.......2007-04-01
Isaac Asimov is surely a brilliant scientist and an expert his subject, biochemistry. But that doesn't translate to easy and clear reading nor a smooth flow of ideas. Asimov goes off into so many side tangents, often for 10 to 20 pages or more, that it is extremely difficult to follow his primary ideas that led to the tangents. I found this book very abstruse and poorly written. I wouldn't recommend it to the casual reader, and I was in a college course that required it. The tedious details that Asimov goes into are entirely unnecessary, in my opinion, and that contributes to the almost 900 pages of pedantic and excruciatingly boring science history. He's a terrific science fiction writer but forget about this way-too-long tome. It will put you to sleep.
Just a great book.......2004-03-06
I was a young reader and my personality was still not set. So many "bad" books kept pulling me in the wrong directions. I read all bestsellers though they taught me nothing. A day came when I had nothing to read and I happened to come across this book in my elder brother's library. It was written long before I was born. Yet, as I was truly bored, I began to read it and I was hooked before long. The world of Science was visible to me and, for the first time in my life, it looked attractive. I can truly say that this book changed my life. I now am completing my pre-med degree and will be off to medical school before long. I have never been happier; Science has become my life. Thank you Isaac Asimov.
Fantastic!...but dated..........2003-12-03
As a science teacher, I give this book my highest possible recommendation! It tells the stories behind the science: the men and women who made the important discoveries and how they did it. My only complaint is that the text is now 20 years old. I wish someone could recommend a more recent text--written with as wide a scope--that was more up-to-date.
The most exhilarating text !.......2003-04-09
I have a personal small "library" of scientific books. This book has to be, by far, the most well structured, well explained, systematic and exhilarating read. I would rate this book as number 1 among possibly 50 similar books that I have read. If you are technically enthusiastic, would like to know about anything and everything pertaining to science and have a jolly good read at that, I would highly recommend this book. Asimov is gifted as a writer, in that he takes the most complex concepts and explains it in such a way, that a first-time reader on the subject feels confident of his/her understanding. If you have lots of time (900 pages of size 10 text!), are a thinker and want to begin to understand the great works of genii ranging from archimedes, galileo, newton and einstein, this book is for you! Well done to a man long gone. He leaves a legacy of genius !
My First Choice Science Text.......2002-11-24
In my opinion, Asimov provided the most entertaining and readable scientific "texts" around, and this comprehensive volume is his best. Despite the fact that I am a layperson, and this book is nearly 1000 pages, I devoured it and longed for more. If you are not a lover of the sciences when you begin Asimov's Guide to Science, you will be when you finish! Anyone 12 years and older should read this book. It will change the way you look at the universe.
