Book Description
In this comprehensive study on global aid, the authors argue that no better alternative exists to replace taxpayer-financed aid as the main mechanism for promoting greater equality between North and South and within the countries of the South. It should therefore be continued while at the same time being made more effective and efficient, and the authors present ideas to achieve this. They conclude by examining new modes of financing development and new modes of international cooperation aimed at bringing about growth and human development.

Book Description
The chapters in this book are centered around the structure of tissues, an intermediate and neglected level between overt morphology and biochemistry, and will be of great interest to all those engaged in attempting to understand the principles behind plant development. The author's purpose is to predict what should be looked for on a molecular level so as to account for observable forms. Each chapter deals with a defined problem such as the role of hormones as correlative agents, tissue polarization, apical meristems and cell lineages. The final chapter develops an alternative approach to the problem of the specification of biological form, that of "epigenetic selection."

Book Description
In 1910, the surgeons Moreau and LePrince wrote about their successful operation on an eight-year-old boy who had been blind since birth because of cataracts. When the boy's eyes were healed they removed the bandages and, waving a hand in front of the child's physically perfect eyes, asked him what he saw. "I don't know," was his only reply. What he saw was only a varying brightness in front of him. However, when allowed to touch the hand as it began to move, he cried out in a voice of triumph, "It's moving!" He could feel it move, but he still needed laboriously to learn to see it move. Light and eyes were not enough to grant him sight. How, then, do we see? What's the difference between seeing and perception? What is light? From ancient times to the present, from philosophers to quantum physicists, nothing has so perplexed, so fascinated, so captivated the mind as the elusive definition of light. In Catching the Light, Arthur Zajonc takes us on an epic journey into history, tracing how humans have endeavored to understand the phenomenon of light. Blending mythology, religion, science, literature, and painting, Zajonc reveals in poetic detail the human struggle to identify the vital connection between the outer light of nature and the inner light of the human spirit. He explains the curiousness of the Greeks' blue and green "color blindness": Odysseus gazing longingly at the "wine-dark sea"; the use of chloros (green) as the color of honey in Homer's Odessey; and Euripides' use of the color green to describe the hue of tears and blood. He demonstrates the complexity of perception through the work of Paul Cezanne--the artist standing on the bank of a river, painting the same scene over and over again, the motifs multiplying before his eyes. And Zajonc goes on to show how our quest for an understanding of light, as well as the conclusions we draw, reveals as much about the nature of our own psyche as it does about the nature of light itself. For the ancient Egyptians the nature of light was clear--it simply was the gaze of God. In the hands of the ancient Greeks, light had become the luminous inner fire whose ethereal effluence brought sight. In our contemporary world of modern quantum physics, science plays the greatest part in our theories of light's origin--from scientific perspectives such as Sir Isaac Newton's "corpuscular theory of light" and Michael Faraday's "lines of force" to such revolutionary ideas as Max Planck's "discrete motion of a pendulum" (the basis of quantum mechanics), Albert Einstein's "particles of light" and "theory of relativity," and Niels Bohr's "quantum jumps." Yet the metaphysical aspects of the scientific search, Zajonc shows, still loom large. For the physicist Richard Feynman, a quantum particle travels all paths, eventually distilling to one path whose action is least--the most beautiful path of all. Whatever light is, here is where we will find it. With rare clarity and unmatched lyricism, Zajonc illuminates the profound implications of the relationships between the multifaceted strands of human experience and scientific endeavor. A fascinating search into our deepest scientific mystery, Catching the Light is a brilliant synthesis that will both entertain and inform.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT.......2004-07-21
This book not only provide a full review of the history of the light (or better, of the conception of light in the human mind) but it is exceptionally well written. English is not my first language and I was delighted with learning to read English through this book.
What is Light?.......2000-06-10
This book is a powerful expose' revealing some of the true qualities of Light. What is Light? True, it is bright, it shines, it energizes all life on Earth, yet what, exactly, is it? Humans not only need the qualities of light from the Sun, but we breathe Light, we absorb Light. We need the Energy produced by the Light in order to live. Readers interested in delving beneath the surface of the visible world will be enthralled by this book. You will finally understand who you are, where you've come from, where you're going. Your soul will revel in this insightful book.
Let there be light! Read this masterpiece........1998-07-19
On the cover of this book, James Gleick (of Chaos fame) calls it a "small gem". Indeed. It shines.
Arthur Zajonc has written a contrapuntal study of light and mind. He plays mankind's understanding of one against the other and shows how insights of mind, by mind, illume our notion of light. Zajonc tells how these, in turn, relect back onto our idea of mind. Brilliant.

The Genuine Article.......2004-03-05
These are moving and beautiful poems that are unlike most of what is being published these days, particularly by women poets. Boisseau's subjects are the things of this world, and yet these muscular lyrics somehow communicate a tenderness and longing that reminds me of our best bare-knuckled poets, like Philip Levine and Ellen Bryant Voigt. I read the suite of poems that opens the book, about a dead father-in-law and the cluttered workshop he left behind, and was sold on Boisseau. Absent here is the kind of self-conscious experimentation that has become the norm for many young writers; instead, these are gritty and honest and delicate at once. Like the dead man's hammer, this book seems burnished to a lovey sheen not by wildness, but work.

What about the Gettysburg Address?.......2004-07-30
A gorgeously illustrated, eye-catching text that spans the prehistory and history of the region that we now call the United States. When I was growing up in the 1970s, we had several well regarded books on American history. Yet none had the profusion of colour illustrations on almost every page. Students using this as their first text will not notice it, but the book speaks to substantial advances in the lowering cost of colour printing in 30 years. Of course, we have much more than just eye candy here. The illustrations are well integrated into the textual narrative. The text flows with a well polished grace that should draw in the interest of many students.
The book does not gloss over various bloody aspects of history. Above all, of slavery. There is extensive description of the human cost of the Middle Passage and the subsequent suffering of plantation life. Relations of the settlers with native tribes are frankly discussed. Several massacres of tribes are mentioned. Yet the book is not an anti-American screed. The common theme is that, however imperfect, the US continued to move in an ever upward and progressive manner.
Perhaps the authors could have deigned to include the full text of the Gettysburg Address. A short speech that many consider to be amongst the greatest of American discourses. By contrast, the text has, and quite rightly so, the most memorable excerpts from King's

Today, visitors from around the world go to Halifax to see the many unique artefacts of the sinking in the collection of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, a permanent exhibit that recounts the story of Titanic and the city's role in the disaster. This book describes the extensive search that followed the sinking and examines how people came to terms with the impact of the sinking.
Titanic Remembered offers a unique perspective on the Titanic saga, serving as a valuable illustration of the disaster's tragic aftermath.
Customer Reviews:
An Incredible Book on the Titanic and its Aftermath.......2000-04-19
A wonderful book, filled with pictures, of what happened after the Titanic sank. There are terrific stories of the survivors and how those who drowned were recovered and sent to Halifax for burial, or held there until their families came for the bodies.
There are photos taken of the scene with literally hundreds of caskets on the boats as the bodies were recovered. Halifax has a Titanic musuem there with artifacts and other things of interest that even those with a casual interest will appreciate.
This book is must-reading for those who are really into this event.

Strange But True: Mysterious People Rocked Me.......2002-09-14
I have over a hundred books on Forteana, the Occult, and Bermuda-Triangle type of mysteries, but I have never read anything like Thomas Slemen's book, Strange But True: Mysterious People. I don't know how he does it but Slemen draws you into the sinister and bizarre tales of his book, and it leaves you with an appetite for more of his tales. I have all of his English books as I live in London, and a friend in New York is so into Slemen, she has asked me to mail the books I have to her. Slemen's website is worth checking out: tomslemen.mainpage.net
I would wholeheartedly recommend the book to all lovers of mysteries and the unknown.
Interesting, but hokey at times.......2002-05-28
I really enjoyed reading this book. I could read it for days on end. It really does keep your attention and really gets you to want to turn the page and find out what else happened that Mr. Slemen is going to explain. It is a great collection of people and their bizarre mysteries. But I also wonder at how true these things are. At times I felt as if I were reading a novel instead of a book that was designed to explain to me the mysteries of these people. Not that I minded, but it also does make one wonder how true the things Mr. Slemen puts in his book are. Many times I wondered if those things had actually happened. Also some people should have been left out of the book. On some occations, I would read a bout a person, really intrigued, and then his mystery or solution to the problem would be totally hokey and wouldn't classify with the other explanations. Such as the explnation of Spring Heeled Jack as an alien was totally out of league with such explanations as Edgar Allan Poe actually killing the "Cigar Girl". The book also takes a lot of assumptions with assuming the reader believes in aliens and polturgeists. But over all the book was very entertaining minus those minute details. If you like true stories about fascinating people, this is for you.
Strange, Yeah....But How True?.......2002-03-08
Strange But True is a potpourri of bite-sized stories about (Surprise!) strange people and/or events. I am a "Strangeness Buff", and even though I have a TON of books that run along the same lines, there was a lot here that was new to me, and a lot that makes you want to read more; The chapters on Springheel Jack and The Tunguska Alien were especially interesting. Slemen's writing is compelling, and his style makes for fun reading.
The drawback was that the book has no bibliography, so it's impossible to do any further digging for information, and there's no telling where Slemen got his facts from. As such, that always left me feeling a tad doubtful about some of the more unbelieveable stuff.....It is a fun book, though, and fans of the Unexplained will have a good time.
very entertaining, but questionable.......2001-10-24
I really enjoyed this book and have reread it several times now. It has to be one of the most thought provoking set of stories ever written. The range of topics, both in the variety of subject and the historical timespan, is also a good point of the book.
However, some of the facts in some of the stories are questionable especially in light of the lack of bibliography. For instance, the story concerning the explosion in Siberia in 1908 was factual in regards to time, place and who/when it was investigated. Whether or not a supernatural/alien creature haunted the explosion site, as this book claims, is highly questionable. Many video documentaries on the Siberian explosion have not mentioned anything about such a creature and since there is no bibliography to this book it is impossible to find where these claims originated. It must be admitted that this makes the authors version highly suspect.
At any rate, the book is very entertaining and is highly recommended.
Most excellent in every sense.......1999-08-15
I usually read books simular to this one. This book was entertaining with its tales and stimulating with the real facts it gave. St. Germain, EA Poe, Vampires....very interesting.

Sure to be a classic.......2006-05-26
Clark and ABC-CLIO have rendered a priceless service to Fortean readers and researchers alike with this collection of 645 entries spanning the years from 1729 to 1935. The vast majority are verbatim quotations of newspaper stories commonly cited only in footnotes by other authors (or with excerpts taken out of context, frequently misquoted). Every library should own a copy of this book, and no serious researcher or would-be writer on Fortean subjects will begrudge its cost.
Eyewitness accounts defy rational explanation.......2006-04-13
North America has seen some of the strangest natural phenomena in the world: some accounts yet to be proven and possibly fantasy; others well researched, documented science. UNNATURAL PHENOMENA: A GUIDE TO THE BIZARRE WONDERS OF NORTH AMERICA is a compendium of the former of these eyewitness accounts, gathering findings and events from the last 200 years that keep defying rational explanations, from strange lights and sky battles to sea monsters and huge flying starfish ghosts. Each documented sighting includes a description and a dated source reference. This could've been reviewed under 'New Age' but many a science student will find it fascinating, and not to be missed.
A great book.......2006-01-29
This is a wonderful reference book full of material that will inform much future research.
Such books are made for libraries, most often, and have high prices due to the time it takes to comply them, their length, the amount of time to edit and produce them, and more. A criticism of the price from someone that borrowed one from a friend seems immature to the extreme and should be removed from consideration as a valid critique.
Buy it if you have the money. But please, don't whine if you don't.
false claims about my book and me.......2006-01-29
As the author/editor of Unnatural Phenomena, I apologize for the immodest five stars. Unfortunately, Amazon won't accept a submission without a rating, and what the hell, I am fond of the book. It is among my own favorites of the ones I have written. This is not being written, however, to praise my own efforts but to correct some serious misinformation in T. Christopher Smith's review.
First of all, the book is not self-published. As Smith could easily have determined, ABC-CLIO is a successful, highly regarded publisher of reference books for libraries and the academic market. I am somewhere between stunned and perplexed by this sentence: "But remember, [Clark] is the one setting the price tag, not the retailer." Where in the world could Smith have gotten this impression? The retailer had everything to do with setting the price, and the author precisely nothing. Then Smith follows a baseless claim with a malicious charge, based apparently in mind reading with faulty reception, that "money now seems to be [the author's] only motivation." What did I do to deserve this?
As Smith would have learned with even the most minimal research, reference books are very expensive. I wish they weren't, but I have no say in the matter. If I had had some say in the matter, I would have liked Unnatural Phenomena to be a trade paperback, selling in the $15-17 range, so that just about everybody who wanted to read it could afford it.
I'm glad that you liked the book, Mr. Smith, but next time you feel the compulsion to throw around nasty charges, you would be better advised to make sure you know what you're talking about.
Entertaining and very broad range of subjects.......2005-08-28
Not really organized like a traditional book this is really a collection of newspaper and magazine articles from the early 1800's through the mid-1900's. The original articles are repeated verbatim complete with comments, misspellings, and colloquial word usage. I found this to be one of the endearing qualities of the book. The author takes a very broad look at unnatural phenomena and includes everything from strange things falling from the sky, to strange apparitions, animals, visions, and just about anything else you can think of that has been reported over the last two hundred years. While it is interesting reading it is not a book that I would suggest if you are looking to do a serious study of strange phenomena. On the other hand, if you are just looking for some light reading and a collection of incidents as reported by the media you will probably find this an entertaining read. The articles are all arranged by state instead of by type of phenomena so it is easy to look through your state and see what has been reported over the years. Unnatural Phenomena: A Guide to the Bizarre Wonders of North America is a recommended read for anyone interested in this subject or light enough reading for the merely curious.
Book Description
Do UFOs really exist? Or are they figments of the imagination? Did Nostradamus have the uncanny gift of foretelling the future? Or was he simply a charlatan? Many people associated with the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb were said to be cursed. True? Or a classic example of a paranormal myth? Do spiritualists and mediums really contact the departed? Or is it a clever confidence trick?
Fortune telling, psychic detectives, astrology, ghosts, hypnosis, coincidence, dowsing, fire walking, the Loch Ness Monster are some of the intriguing subjects covered in a lively and stimulating text (including over 100 photographs, engravings, paintings and cartoons in color and black and white) which helps the reader to choose whether to believe--or not.
Customer Reviews:
A Fun Look at the New Age.......1997-10-15
Hundreds of books tout psychic phenomena and UFOs, but only a handful try to explain why the New Age seems a bit silly. Most of those are painfully dull. But Bizarre Beliefs breaks from the pack, looking at everything from alien abductions to spiritualism with good humor and British charm. Although the authors are skeptics, they are always sensitive to the views of others. For those who wonder whether there is really anything to astrology, or fire walking, or the curse of Tutankhamun, this book will make you think while it makes you chuckle.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2007-10-04
OK, first let me say, as disclosure, that I know one of the authors, and knew him while he was writing this book. Let me ALSO say that, for that reason, I did not want to review this book. What if I didn't like it? What if I hated it? What would I do?
Well I can now say, unequivocally, that I love this book so much I am ordering one for myself, one for my sister, one for my nephew, and at least one more for a good friend. It is fabulous. It is entertaining. And above all, it is incredibly informative, whether you want to research a superstition, a "lake creature" (there's more than Nessie out there!), various gods and goddesses, astrology (a heck of a lot more than "what's your sign"), and so much more.
From Divination to Elves and Faeries to ESP and Haunting to Herbs and Stones, to name just a few chapter titles, this book is a wealth of well-written, fabulously illustrated entries. Pay particular attention to Chapter 3: Demons and Angels.
This is not a "cult" book; it's a compendium of just about every myth and belief that makes up the human psyche, ancient and modern. Again, I love this book, and am proud to recomment it.

Massively Entertaining!.......2007-09-21
This is a real gem as it details countless little known newspaper articles on all-things weird in the state of Texas from the latter part of the 19th Century to the early years of the 20th Century.
I wrote the Foreword to the book and - living in Dallas, Texas myself - I can safely say that if you are even remotely interested in the historical weirdness of the Lone Star State, then this is a book you will most definitely not want to miss - packed as it is with tales of ghosts, UFOs, bizarre looking people and much more.
As for my favorite topics of cryptozoology and weird animals specifically, how you can resist learning about the mystery puma of Whitewright; the story of the seven-legged calf; the 40-foot-long tapeworm that was removed from a child's stomach; the shaggy Wildman of the San Antonio River; giant eagles; a ten-horned cow; and the Lovecraftian pig-baby of Groesbeck.

Customer Reviews:
My First Elephant Primer..........1999-12-01
"Elephants: The Deciding Decade" was one of the first elephant books I purchased. At the time I did not know much about elephants. This was a great book for me to "cut my baby teeth" on with regards to its vast overview of elephants: their history, social structure--herds and family groups. It did a good job of discussing young elephants and their behaviors and maturation. It also had some unique topics (I won't spoil it by saying what they were) that I have not seen in the many, many elephant books I've read since. This edition has pertinent updates necessary to know about if one is really serious about elephants and their futures. One of the true joys of this book was the excellent photography. The level of reading is technical at times, yet easily understood for the most part. A must for the true "elephanatic's" book collection!
