                      5 out of 5 stars Scholastic perfection.......2004-09-14

I've been in an accredited university for fifteen years studying the intricacies of physiology. I have never come across a book that was executed to such perfection. The photos are astonishing in their clarity and intimate setting. The narration is concise and very clear, almost to the point where you want to phone the author and congratulate him on his accomplishment. If you are thinking of pursuing any kind of biological/medical field than I highly recommend this fine piece of art. It will soon be Shakespearean in its influence. Don't trust the simple words of my fellow plebian reviewers; this book is the second coming of the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars A physiology instructor weighs in on this book.......2003-02-11

I have been teaching University-level physiology for over 10 years. I have used at least a dozen books, from the "essentials" to the "encyclopedic". For a one-semester course on physiology that emphasizes recurring mechanisms from a cellular and organ-level perspective, with a great introduction to ecological physiology thrown in, Eckert cannot be beat. In my experience, the vast majority of students respond better to Eckert's illustrations than to the endless flow charts that appear in most of the other books. It nicely fills the niche between "just the basics" essentials texts (which are simply not rigorous enough for biology majors) and the "every little detail" encyclopedic texts that most students find bewildering. If I had to learn animal physiology from just one textbook, this would be it; and I'd save the cell & molecular details from one of THOSE specialty texts instead. The ONLY criticism I have about Eckert is its nearly complete lack of consideration of the immune system.

                      1 out of 5 stars A Horrible book!.......2002-02-14

The author can not explain the molecular aspects of biological processes well. The figures were fine but there are so many books that are far better than this. The author seriously needs to take some writing classes. I had to use another book in conjunction with this one, inorder to make sure I got the concepts correct. Compared to the other book, Eckert Animal Physiology is nothing!

As a university student in animal sciences, I bought this book to get a lot of great informations about animal physiology for my 1st grade. I've been very surprised of the quality of the informations mentioned in this book; well explained, easy to consult... it's a great book! Subjects are handle professionally and are written to make everyone who know a little bit about biology understand in details everything about animal physiology. A great book, similar as Neil A. Capmbell's Biology quality... simply a great referance!

                      Book Description

Freezer-wrapped sirloin tips, secret sauce, and info-tech giant ThinkSoft combine in this satirical novel, rife with tones of Vonnegut and Huxley. Lenny Milton, loyal user of ThinkSoft products, opens his mailbox one day to find a package marked “Perishable.” Inside are flash-frozen sirloin tips. Instantly famished, and thrilled to receive another gift from ThinkSoft, Lenny can’t wait to fire up his grill. But there’s a warning on the package: By breaking the seal and accessing the Wholly Grill marinated meat, you agree that the aforesaid meat will be promptly cooked on the Wholly Grill Outdoor Cooking Information System (“The System”) and only on the System. Lenny bites the bait, but then he can’t log on to ThinkSoft’s overloaded network to start the grill. When he gives up and cooks the meat on his trusty old Weber, he breaks the user agreement, thereby unleashing the fury of the tech gods. The results, ranging from exploding flavor crystals that blind Lenny’s dog, to a class action suit against ThinkSoft with riotously funny courtroom scenes, to a dangerous investigation into ThinkSoft founder Art Newman by plucky reporter Persi Valentino, will have readers laughing out loud and thinking twice about software purchases and end user agreements, not to mention barbecues.

There's a great satire in here somewhere, but unfortunately the prose is just plain colorless. Didn't the author's editor see the missed punchlines??
                      It's a funny story, but I can't say it's a great book.

2 out of 5 stars Great original idea -- awful writing.......2004-06-24

As a Silicon Valley intellectual property attorney, I was excited to read this book. The story is original and holds a lot of promise -- indeed, the book starts out great. Sadly, the tale runs out of original ideas after about the first 50 pages and the poor writing becomes even more evident. The one paragraph description of a love scene toward the end of the book is one of the worst ever written. I did struggle to the end, but could not recommend anyone else do the same.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, but almost scary........2002-11-07

As a fan of wacky humor a la Carl Hiaasen, I found this book quite good. Given the reality of some of the insidious license agreements out there, however, some of Townsend's ideas are eerily close to the mark! No doubt, this comes from his expertise as an Intellectual Property lawyer. If he can either grab enough material from that field to write others or extend his style to other areas, we may have another Hiaasen on our hands. The courtroom interrogation of a German Shepard near the end had me in stitches.

                      5 out of 5 stars A great legal satire.......2002-09-15

As a lawyer and as a self-proclaimed "numero uno legal thriller lover", I usually read about 50 legal thrillers a year - of the likes of John Grisham, Scott Turow, Lisa Scottoline, Richard North Patterson etc., etc. Suspense, courtroom drama, intrigue - are most probably the words that come to mind while describing legal thrillers.

However, words like amusing, hilarious & funny cross my mind after reading Secrets of the Wholly Grill - a novel the like of which I have never ever read in this realm of mystery writing.

Intellectual Property Lawyer Lawrence G. Townsend-s foray into fiction writing - Secrets of the Wholly Grill - is a superb satire, one that will be enjoyed by any person with a sense of humour.

Thinksoft, a software company introduces an innovative "laser-powered cooking device connected by modem to a proprietary information network, designed to provide the ultimate outdoor dining experience for millions of barbecue loving Americans - the Wholly Grill." A special sauce is shipped free by Thinksoft to many a customer, but the can can only be used on the Wholly Grill. Using the sauce in any other grill results in freakish accidents & dangerous explosions.

One such victim is Lenny Milton whose dog has lost his eyesight by consuming a barbecue product using this sauce in an ordinary grill. He approaches Will Swanson - a novice young attorney (a superb caricature of a lawyer usually seen in Grisham novels) & together, with the help of reporter Persi Valentino & lawyer Edwin G. Ostermyer, they take on Thinksoft. What follows is a rip-roaring humorous ride with David/Goliath style action that will enthrall & amuse.

Secrets of the Wholly Grill is a satire on our litigation-obsessed society, the unscrupulous monopolistic nature of modern day companies, on legal thrillers & finally on Consumerism.

We seldom associate legal thrillers with humour, (or for that matter lawyers with humour) - save for John Mortimer-s wonderful Rumpole works, I have never read a "funny" novel featuring legal-themed stories. The book reminded me a lot of MASH - a novel about doctors & medical service, unlike any other - & in that sense - Secrets of the Wholly Grill - is a unique look into the legal system, unlike any other.

Secrets of the Wholly Grill is a wholly satisfying read. Highly, highly recommended.

The cover alone forced me to buy this, and I was not at all disappointed. This is a book for conspiracy theorists and haters of monopolistic software vendors everywhere! Not only is this "laugh out loud" funny the whole (wholly?) way through, but it is scarily close to the "wholly truth".
Written by an intellectual property attorney from Silicon Valley who has obviously seen it all happen in reality: from absurd "shrink wrap licenses" to the increasing power of lawyers over the technological lanscape. What does a software company do when it runs out of new revenue sources for it's software? Why turn to the "consumer" marketplace, of course. But the catch is you still do business like a software company, with a draconian "shrink-wrap" license.
I won't spoil the ending, but suffice it to say that when the "wholly e-truth" comes out in the end, your sides should hurt from laughing! Don't miss it!!!!

                        Book Description

How does this Jewish history book differ from all others? Instead of burdening the reader with endless details about every single aspect of Jewish history, Pasachoff and Littman provide essential information, easily digested by readers of all ages, that chronicles only the major events and people of the past. The history of the Jews covers a period of over 3,500 years, with an overwhelming number of countries and lands. It is a microcosm of the history of the world. Consequently, even a one-volume work can be difficult to read from cover to cover to gain the sweep of Jewish history. This book speaks to the reader who is interested in individual topics or periods and wants a quick-reference guide to the people and places that truly shaped Jewish history. At the same time, if read from beginning to end, these nutshells will provide a chronological history of the Jews.

I found this book to be a easy-to-read introduction to Judaism from biblical times to the present. The book is organized into 100 chapters of 2 to 4 pages each, presented in chronological order, providing a great introduction to the history of the Jewish people. This is an interesting entry-level history of the ups and downs of Jewish civilization, with no theological axe to grind.

                              Book Description

A fascinating and thought provoking journey into West Africa through the eyes of the people who have dedicated their lives to helping preserve the natural habitat of West Africa. This book describes the work of individuals who have devoted their lives to preserving a richly diverse, beautiful, and prosperous world for future generations of West Africans. The book's purposes are to honor these dedicated conservationists and to offer them as inspirational role models for those considering joining the ranks of conservationists. By describing the places, the issues, and the challenges facing these individuals, this book presents a snapshot of West Africa conservation as we begin the twenty-first century. Eighteen different profiles cover a gamut of topics such as: Trees for Timbuktu, Forests for the Future, Championing Chimpanzees, Endangered Species, National Parks, and the Politics of Conservation. While the economy and politics of this great country keep changing you will feel an involvement in these conservation efforts right from the start of this book!
