This gives them a niche in Old World forests where they are often the only abundant medium-sized arboreal folivorous mammal. From a possible Miocene origin, colobine monkeys have radiated into a wide variety of forms inhabiting a range of tropical woodlands in Africa and Asia. The central theme of this work is adaptive radiation, showing how the special features of colobine anatomy interacted with a range of ecosystems to produce the distinctive species of today. Most of the extant species have been subject to long-term field studies, but until this book, no synthesis of work on this group has been available. The book discusses parallels with other mammalian groups.

Please if you are a student of physics. DO NOT buy this book. Although it has a lot more problems, you dont need to buy it other than the book. The book itself is more than enough cuz it has a lot of problems of its own which are pretty good. Secondly, there are no complete solutions given. I think its just a waste of money.

Pretty good book!.......2001-11-23

I thought the problem supplement to Resnick/Halliday was very good. There are simply not enough problems in the text book itself so this problem supplement not only gives problems to work on but it really touches on all bases as far as making sure it looks at all aspects of the material. I'd say, any one learning physics from Resnick/Halliday must have this book.

A very worthy addition to the team.......2007-05-23

I like this problem book and I like the fact that it is separate. I'm old school, I suppose, but I'd teach out of the second edtion (see my review) and use this problem book.

Superb, flawless, highly recommended collection.......2006-04-24

As a longtime admirer of "The Magus", recently interested in non-fictional essays, I picked up "The Wormholes" with double interest. I was richly rewarded.
John Fowles gave the readers a collection of his musings on subjects so diverse as his work, nature, literature and other forms of art.

The essays are divided into four sections: Autobiographical, Culture. Literature, and Nature. They span quite a long time - from 1964 to 1996. I wanted to choose the best ones as examples here, but virtually all are masterpieces - my personal favourites (highly subjective, because of my particular interest in the subjects, not because they are better written!) being "The filming of The French Lieutenant's Woman", "Behind The Magus", "Greece", "On being English but not British", "Thomas Hardy's England", "Weeds, Bugs, and Americans", "The Islands", and, last but not least, "The Nature of Nature". The essays are a pleasure to read - they are not only informative, showing very sharp insight into many matters, and stimulating the train of thought, but also exquisitely worded, full of metaphors and allusions. At the end there is a bonus - an interview with Fowles done by Dianne Vipond in 1995.

Fowles was a rare erudite. These essays fully show the extent of his knowledge, his intellect, and his humanism. He is completely at ease with history and literature, and at the same time is not removed from the real world, sees the details of its beauty and deeply cares about environment. After reading this collection, I have a lot of respect for him as a person, not only as a writer.

Very interesting non-fiction from the great writer.......1998-07-12

Though I'd like to have had another work of fiction, this book of various and sundry non-fiction is most interesting when Mr. Fowles writes about his own fiction and his thoughts on the process of fiction in these post-modern times.

Indispensable to any admirer of Mr. Fowles fiction.

mechanical humans: an ironic look .......2007-07-29

Recounting in successive biographic episodes the ultimately pathetic efforts of men to build, with their own hands, artificial humans, Gaby Wood offers a uniquely female perspective. Especially since the mechanicals were often meant to be women. Although very learned, the author does not aim at an engineering evaluation. Rather, the stories she tells will elicit in psychologically sensitive readers a mixture of laughter and horror. As was the case with the audiences in front of which these creatures were presented, readers will first be fascinated but then will turn away in revulsion.

Many diverse facts little synthesis.......2005-01-08

This book is all over the map. Reading along you discover a number of very interesting facts about early robotics, cinema, toy manufacture and circus life. The facts are never brought together in any meaningful way. There seems to be a thread that can be constructed from the journey from the initial attempts at artifical life in the early Age of Enlightenment to the modern world of robotic manufacturing and artifical intellegence. This thread is never investigated in this book. It is actually a series of disjointed tales all dealing with the perception of "life" in various intellectual climes. It just doesn't seem to come together into any sort of intelectually satisfying way.

An Anecdotal, Quirky History.......2003-07-29

Edison's Eve (Edison's attempt to create a successful talking doll) is both the title of Gaby Wood's book and one of the centrepiece chapters of this journey on the quest for mechanical life. Other chapters concern the Doll Family of midgets, the movies of Melies, the automatons of Vaucanson and the deception of the chess playing Turk (not an actual automaton). These pieces do not always blend together smoothly but the author works very hard to connect all the dots. On their own, though, each chapter is fascinating and filled with memorable anecdotes and will have the reader looking at the world in a different way. An enjoyable read.

This is a great book for anyone interested in automata - and that includes computer people interested in artificial language, philosophers interested in what makes us human, cultural anthropologists interested in the interaction of humans and machines, and poets interested in all of the above. If you like this, try also The Turk: The Life and Times of the Famous
Eighteenth-Century Chess-Playing Machine by Tom Standage. Equally strange & pleasurable.

An environmental bill that focused on ocean health, the National Marine, Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act of 1972, established a system of marine protected areas. This new system would be administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), established in 1970. The National Marine Sanctuaries Act - The purpose of this Act was to prevent "unregulated dumping of material into the oceans, coastal, and other waters" that endanger "human health, welfare, and amenities, and the marine environment, ecological systems and economic potentialities." Within this law, the transportation and dumping of radioactive, chemical, or biological substances were forbidden. However, this Act also included Title III, later called the National Marine Sanctuaries Act, which charged the Secretary of the Department of Commerce to identify, designate, and manage marine sites based on conservational, ecological, recreational, historical, aesthetic, scientific or educational value within significant national ocean and Great Lake waters. Under the newly created agency, NOAA began examining nationally significant marine areas for possible sanctuary designation. Two years after the Act was passed, the nation's first marine sanctuary was created to preserve the wreckage of the USS Monitor, a Civil War ironclad, resting in 240 feet of water off North Carolina, 16 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Over the next 25 years, eleven additional marine sanctuaries would be added. On the Pacific Ocean, Olympic Coast, Washington State and Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank in California joined the system and brought into it a rich diversity of marine ecosystems. The Flower Garden Banks, a coral oasis in a sea of oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico was designated. In the Atlantic Ocean, Gray's Reef Stellwagen Bank, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuaries protected precious coral reefs and rich fishing grounds, loggerhead turtles and right whales. In the Hawaiian Islands, a sanctuary protecting Humpback Whales was established to help preserve important breeding grounds of these vulnerable cetaceans. And the marine sanctuary farthest from the U.S. mainland was designated in Fagatale Bay, American Samoa in a fringing coral reef nestled within an eroded volcanic crater. In Fall 1999, the thirteenth sanctuary, and the first in the Great Lakes in Thunder Bay, Michigan, joined the system.
