    Book Description

This volume compares strategic properties of the leading macroeconometric models of the United States. It summarizes the work of an ongoing seminar supported by the National Science Foundation and chaired by Lawrence R. Klein of the University of Pennsylvania. The Seminar meets three times annually. Comparisons are made across models for such characteristics as conventional multipliers (fiscal, monetary, and supply side shocks), J-curve response to dollar depreciation, and forecast performance under consistent assumptions. There are in-depth comparisons of some models and investigation of use of high frequency information to improve forecasts. There are also analyses of the sources of forecast error. The core structures of models, especially their ISLM cores, are compared. The volume contains one chapter on comparison across models of different developing countries. In addition to the contributions by participating model builders who meet regularly, the book contains critical appraisals by outsiders. The contributors include many distinguished economists in model use and analysis. Many are operators of the countries best known modelling facilities. The introduction was written by Lawrence R. Klein, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Science in 1980, for his work in construction and use of econometric models.

                  Book Description

Chemokines are major mediators of immune cells and are involved in a wide range of proinflammatory human diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and organ transplant rejection. It has recently been discovered that their receptors are involved in HIV infection. The characterization of these molecules and their receptors is thus of primary importance in understanding a number of human diseases and infections. This volume and its companion Volume 287 Chemokines provide comprehensive experimental protocols used in this field of research.

4 out of 5 stars A synthesis of major research themes and findings.......2006-09-12

"The Woodland Period ( ca. 1200 BC to AD 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this 2000 year era the peoples of the South East experienced inceasing sedentism, population growth and organizational complexity. At the begining of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely boundby collective burial rituals. But bythe 1st melenium AD, some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centres rules by hereditary elites. maize was now the primary food crop. Perhapes most importantly, the ancient animal focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with each other.

This volume synthesises the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about, while analyzing the periods archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland period, the editors have highlighted major themes and given primary sources".

Eighteen of the papers were presented at the 55th annual meeting of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference in Greenville, South Carolina on November 12 1998.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Example of History-Anthropology Integration.......2000-11-05

This small book is an excellent example of how the findings of anthropology can extend the frontiers of history into pre-history. It also illustrates how an historian can take too-frequently dry anthropological data and make it into a fascinating account of cultures long-gone.

Shaffer, a Ph.D in East Asian and American history, uses her expertise to interpret anthropological information with historical methods, thereby incorporating this information into the larger historical record.

Although information on the significance of the "Mound-Builders" has long been known in anthropological circles, the significance, the historical extent, and the geographical breadth has generally escaped notice in other fields. In just 100 text pages, Dr. Shaffer places that information into an internal historical context and ties it into the larger world picture. She gives back to the Native Americans of North America their place in world civilization and American history that had been lost.

And it's a very readable book, too.

                                          Book Description

David Brion Davis's books on the history of slavery reflect some of the most distinguished and influential thinking on the subject to appear in the past generation. The Problem of Slavery in the Age of Revolution, the sequel to Davis's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Problem of Slavery in Western Culture and the second volume of a proposed trilogy, is a truly monumental work of historical scholarship that first appeared in 1975 to critical acclaim both academic and literary. This reprint of that important work includes a new preface by the author, in which he situates the book's argument within the historiographic debates of the last two decades.

5 out of 5 stars Old but Great History Writing.......2007-05-30

Davis is one of the most influencial slavery historians with us today. This book is one of his two best. His later works are meant to appeal more to the wider audience who prefer nooks to be like TV programs which require a two minute attention span. If you want a glib and easy reading history, don't buy this. You won't like it or do it justice. If you want an insightful, interesting, scholarly read to increase your knowledge of a most important subject, you need this book.

5 out of 5 stars What We Know is What He Taught Us.......2005-08-12

It's odd that (as of this writing) David Brion Davis' "Problem of Slavery in the Age of Revoution" has no Amazon reviews. Granted that it is not young: my copy bears a puublication date of 1975, which is positively Jurassic in terms of current academic writing (there is a later edition). But that is, perhaps, the point it is Davis (in company with his sometimes Yale colleague, Vann Woodward) who taught us what we know about slavery-and if we know more than they did, it is because of what they taught us. Davis is what our professors read when they went to school-perhaps even more, our professors' professors. The giveaway is in the Amazon listing of books that cite this book. At this writing, there are 145: skim the list and you see a virtually comprehensive library of modern academic writing on the subject.

Davis is not always a delight to read. His style is discursive, somewht elliptical, after the manner of a beloved senior professor in his seminar room (his discussion of Somerset's Case is maddening in its indirection). He can seem to sprawl: indeed it is precisely this tendency to sprawl which leads me to prefer "Age of Revolution" to its companion piece, "The Problem of Slalvery in Western Culture." But the difficulty of pinning him down means also that he doesn't lend himself to soundbytes or oversimplifications.

There are other indispensable names in the literature of slavery: Fogel and Engerman, surely, and Eugene Genovese (and, I suppose, Faulkner's `Absalom, Absalom!"). But any shelf on the topic without Davis has a very gaping hole, indeed.
