lots of research, little depth or analysis.......1998-07-20

This is basically a "how to" Q and A book resembling what might be a FAQ sheet about Vietnam. As a result it is rather disorganized and has little in the way of analysis or opinion. Theoretically, the book covers most of the legal, financial and bureaucratic hurdles one might encounter while doing business in Vietnam. Unfortunately, theory and reality have yet to meet in Vietnam.

I applaud John Burris' book, Blue VS Black. The book did not shock me, probably because I had the advantage of being an insider when much of what Mr. Burris describes was going on. What does amaze me, however, is the attitude of denial expressed by the former Oakland officers reviewing the book.

I am the author of Blackjack and Jive-Five, a book that chronicles many of the internal barriers faced by black police officers as they struggled to become part of the Oakland Police Department in the early 1970s. White officers did not want them and were in no mood to accept more than just a token few-so you can imagine the furor that affirmative action unveiled. I was a white sergeant in that department, one who helped to recruit and train these fine, young black men, and one who also tried to help them assimilate into an overwhelmingly white-majority police culture. It was a brutal time for those black officers. So, this question comes to mind for those persons who criticize John Burris' book as being fictional, slanted, and self-serving:

If so many white Oakland officers could not even be civil to the black persons within their own ranks, how can the abuse of black citizens be denied??

There indeed was abuse toward blacks-both internally and externally-and it was widespread. Moreover, if I shock some by stating this, consider the fact that abuse would have been much worse had it not been for a very tough police chief during the late 60s and early 70s who would not tolerate open racism and did everything within his power to control that which was clandestine. Mine is a sad commentary, but true. It amazes me that other former Oakland officers reviewing this book can have lapses of memory about the racial issues brought forward by Mr. Burris.

I read a borrowed copy of the book, but have since purchased a copy for my personal library. I am sure I will consult it many times during my future writings.

A Good Middle of the Road Book.......2001-11-13

Why do I say this? Well because this book is very well intentioned and is not anti-law enforcement. What it is however is eye opening and factual. It is also an easy read and keeps the reader interested. I think this is a very good book for someone who is interested in knowing more about police brutality but has never read anything about it before. In other words a good starting point. It is very mainstream however. I still liked it but had one friend who felt it was a little to warm and fuzzy "let's all just get along" sounding and skirted some of the meatier issues and colder facts. But like I said it's a good starting point for someone just developing interest in the topic.

Reviewing Burris' reviews.......2001-06-10

The reviews are very biased, on both sides, but mostly on the police-conservative-law and order side. My first thought after reading the reactions of the law and order people is that if Burris gets them this upset he must be doing something right.

Here is an objective bit: Read Martindale-Hubbell (they have a web site) and see what Burris's rating is. M-H rates lawyers. This is done by sending out evaluation forms to lawyers and judges who know the person being evaluated in some professional capacity. These ratings are highly prized and hard to get. The highest rating is "A-V", which means A for highest legal ability, and V for highest ethical conduct. Burris is rated "A-V".

The complaints by the right wingers about the cost to the city of settling these police misconduct suits conveniently avoids mentioning that it is a jury of city citizens who levy the verdict on the city.

The city is well defended and in fact has a lot of advantages in the legal contest. So when they still lose and lose big, that simply means the misconduct was real, and the plaintiff's damages real.

Something to think about.......2001-02-18

I have read some of the negative reviews about Blue Vs. Black, and I completley disagree with these reviewers. I found the book to be full of insight about the things that CAN happen to citizens at the hands of those paid to protect us. The book offers material that gives the reader some serious issues to consider. I believe the author's reform solutions weren't intended to be the last word in criminal justice, but were simply meant as a starting point and spring board for others thoughts on reform. It is so easy to criticize...I read everything from, "his facts were off on the dollar amounts won by plaintiffs" to "he wrote this book to make money because he's not a good lawyer". Instead of being critical, I suggest we use this book as a starting point to focus on police/community conflicts.

A Waste of Time and Money.......2001-01-18

This book is awful. It is a self-serving rant against the system by a man who makes his living suing the system. The writing is poor and filled with some prose worthy of a romance novel. If you are looking for hard fact and information, this is the wrong place. It makes a Reader's Digest article seem in depth.

Remembering 'The Forgotten War'.......2007-02-26

As we hear about North Korea on the news today it is interesting to go back to see the war as it was actually fought. The Korean War was a sad story of American mistakes. A mistake in a speech led the North Koreans to think we didn't care. The run down condition of the American army in terms of equipment and men can only be called foolish. For an example of this, read about Task Force Smith beginning on Page 30 - this is the Army's equivalent to Pearl Harbor. The Air Force, with it's leaders all being Bomber Boys had forgotten about ground support.

This is a great book on the story of the Korean War. It is profusely illustrated with dozens, maybe hundreds of photographs never published before. The commentary that describes the war is written by two retired military officers, one a Korean War vet, the other worked with Gordon Prange on 'At Dawn We Slept' and 'Miracle at Midway.'

My only complaint. There are so many pictures that they have to be printed fairly small. I'd have liked the book to be twice as long with the pictures at least twice as large, even if the book cost twice as much. There are a few mistakes in the book, i.e. a T-34 tank identified as a T-33, but they are minor and do not seriously detract from the overall high quality.

THE PHOTOS BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES...SOME NOT SO PLEASANT...AND DID CAPTURE MUCH OF THE TRUE FRUSTRATION BUT EVENTUAL JUSTIFICATION OF THAT WAR.
IT WOULD BE A VALUABLE ASSIGNMENT FOR ALL THOSE DO-NOTHING MINDS IN WASHINGTON TO READ THIS BOOK AND VISUALIZE JUST WHAT THAT PART OF THE WORLD MIGHT BE LIKE NOW HAD THE U.S. NOT RECOGNIZED THE POTENTIAL AND DONE SOMETHING ABOUT IT. AS INTEL. SGT. IN THE IST CAV DIV., I HAD ACCESS TO INTELLIGENCE FILES THAT INDICATED CAPTURED CHINESE SOLDIERS REPEATEDLY TOLD US THAT THE LONG RANGE PLAN INCLUDED THE FULL OCCUPATION OF SOUTH KOREA AND THEN A MOVE ON TO ALL ISLANDS SOUTH AND VERY LIKELY THE

A Propaganda with so many mistakes.......2006-03-08

The book is a total propaganda. It is biased, subjective and arrogant to describe the war, which happened 50 years ago. Objectively I am really surprised to find so many mistakes made by both authors. My understanding about writing history is a hard work, needs patience, requires objective research method and fully delves into the information before you write any sentence for the public. Let me list some mistakes in the book:
1, Photograph 1-11, the banner in the background is in Chinese not Japanese.
2, Photograph 3-36 refers Chinese casualty in July, 1950. The date of Chinese Army entry Korea is October, 1950. I guess this photograph has been moved to a wrong place.
3, Photograph 7-44, 7-45 refer to war happened after April 22nd. However, the clothes of Chinese POW in 7-44 are typically for summer and that in 7-45 are for winter. Readers can tell the difference by themselves.
4, Photograph 8-14, That MiG-15 on display was flown to South Korea on September 21, 1953 by a defecting North Korean pilot who was given a reward of $100,000. In November 1957 it was transferred to the U.S. Air Force Museum for public exhibition.
5, Photograph 9-11, there are no Chinese delegates shown in the picture.
I don't have too much time to check each picture and sentence accuracy. The authors need to do a lot of homework by themselves to know how to write an objective and accurate history book and to be responsible for the readers. If you want to understand Korean War, I fully suggested `The Korean War' by Max Hastings and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_war by Wikipedia Encyclopedia. Good luck!

Excellent introduction into the Korean War.......2005-06-22

Unjustly the Korean War is often refered to as the "forgotten war", a war which cost the life of over 54.000 Americans, 59.000 South Korean soldiers and over two million Korean civilians. The cold war turned hot and the repurcussions of this horrible conflict are still felt today and are not limited to the divided peninsular.
Authors Donald M. GOLDSTEIN and Harry J. MAIHAFER have done a great job with bringing the Korean war to life in their great visual history. It should be pointed out that co-author MAIHAFER served in Korea (he is featured in two of the photos in the book) and knows first-hand, what he writes about.
While the focus of the book is, as the authors state in the introduction, primarily on the American fighting man, the writers give credit where it is due and also detail the brave efforts of the South Koreans and United Nations troops. (It all too often appears in documentaries on the Korean War that the Americans fought the North Korean and Chinese single-handedly.)
Likely Korean war buffs will not find much new information here, but keep in mind that THE KOREAN WAR: THE STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS is more an introduction into the subject, providing the reader with the essential information on the conflict in its 160+ pages. As such it is great.
The hundreds of pictures accompany the text nicely. Compelling combat scenes, portraits of the leading men of all sides, weapons (from 3.5 bazookas, machine guns and recoilless rifles to F 80 Fighting Stars and F 86 Sabrejets) and vehicles, aerial bombardments, scenes of the frustrating truce talks at Panmanjom (and much more) bring the Korean War vividly to life.
The book is clearly structured, detailing in the first chapter the historical background and giving a geographical overview.
The following chapters follow the course of the war, from the outbreak of hostilities on June 25th, 1950 to the retreat to the Pusan perimeter, the amphibious landing at Inchon, the onslaught into North Korean territory in pursuit of the retreating Communists, the advance to the Yalu, the turning of the tide after the intervention of Chinese "volunteers" and the near catastrophe at the Chosin Reservoir, the retreat of the Allied and ROK forces, the stalemate and truce talks and finally the end of the war and its aftermath.
My main problem with the book is the lack of maps. There are several maps, unfortunately are not all of them essential, but more important ones are missing. For instance, a map detailing the advance of the Allied forces to the Yalu would be most welcome! (Hence my rating of four stars.)

Despite this flaw I hugely recommend THE KOREAN WAR: THE STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS.

A pictoral history of the Korean War.......2000-06-11

A divergence from some of the other books by Donald Goldstein, this book is a wonderful collection of photographs and stories of the Korean War. Maihafer and Goldstein do their best to retell the "forgotten war" using some of the best photographs of the war that I have ever seen. This book is a pictoral history and as such is not a comprehensive study of the war. Nevertheless it accomplishes its objectives well and is a must have for Korean War buffs.

D-Day Normandy.......2004-01-24

D-Day Normandy writen by Donald M. Goldstein, Katherine V. Dillion, and J. Michael Wenger is a great book for WWII buffs. It is more a fact based book than most novels. Which is alright because it has hundred of great pictures from the time. It also gives detaled information from what lead to Americans landing at Normandy. To D-Day its self and the machines used in that time. So I give this book two thumbs up.

If A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words.............2000-01-05

Photos and more photos, that's what you have in this book. There must be a thousand of them, but I didn't count them.

This book takes the reader by the hand, in a bit of elementary school field trip fashion, and literally walks through Operation Overlord. The text is not over anyone's head, and always relates to the photos. The photos then tell the story, along with the captions which point out interesting, easy to overlook, details. It's almost like reading three books at once, the text, the photos, and the captions. But it's very educational and entertaining.

You'll see every form of naval lading craft ever used. Planes, guns, ships, you name it and they have a picture of it in this book. Allied personnel, and German personnel, all called "Antagonists", the title of the first chapter. There's even a great picture of General Patton inspecting a P-51, without a Helmet!

The book is wonderfully organized and laid out. It reads very quickly, despite all the bouncing around you'll do between pictures, captions, and text. Every photo is marked in the text at it's proper location. When the author talks about Churchill, then there is a note to look at the picture of Churchill. It's actually fun, if such a grave subject can be fun.

Read, or look at, this book. It's amazing how you'll begin to see the events, machines, people in a much clearer light. The massiveness of the event will become clear, and the images will tell you the story. If only all the D-Day photos were in one volume.....

Collector's Item for any WWII "Buff"........1998-04-21

The book does a credible job of providing a history of the events and people that led up to the invasion, as well as the invasion itself. But its real strength is as a pictorial history and resource. In this arena it is unsurpassed!

small photos, poorly printed.......2006-08-31

while flipping through this book i kept getting this eerie three-ring binder feeling. something about this book feels cheesy and self-published, and its not just the chapter heading fonts. for one, being that this book is supposed to be about the photographs as well as the sory, i found the paper unsuitable for printing photos. as well, though there are quite a number, they are all small and poorly printed.

Magnificant Collection of Photographs.......2005-09-02

This book is a magnificant collection of photographs. There is just enough writing to explain what the photographs show. Combined they make a pretty good history of the United States involvement in World War I.

While the American involvement in that was was much later and much smaller than that of their allies, they came at a critical time. The British, French and German armies had bled each other nearly to death. All of a sudden the arrival of a million Americans with more on the way tipped the balance.

There is also a suggestion that the tactics used by the Americans had been upgraded from the march in formation tactics used in the early days to more of a 'fire and maneuver' tactic that is much more suited to attacks in the days of machine guns. I do not know if this was an American invention, or if the other allied armies had learned this as well by this time in the war.

The key though to this book is the pictures. I can remember trying to find pictures of World War I some years back and had great difficulty. Here all of a sudden here they are.

Good for the photos and captions.......2005-07-31

Not the first book I would open on the Battle of the Bulge, as it is not comprehensive and a bit unbalanced. It's really a picture book, and in that respect, is worthwhile. The captions are more descriptive (and apparently accurate) than in many books. For example, the photos in a series taken by German battlefield photographers are shown to have been largely staged immediately after combat to re-enact the fighting- interesting. These photos show up in other books without that context mentioned. Those interested in the Malmedy trial will find the photos in that section noteworthy. Worth a look but not a classic for the collection unless you're really focused on the Battle of the Bulge.

Photographic History of the Battle.......2001-10-28

This is a coffee table sized collection of photographs of the persons and events of the Battle of the Bulge. Although it does contain a text with information about commanders, weapons, and the overall course of the battle, the book is mainly interested in describing what is happening in its numerous photos. Of particular interest are the photos made by the Germans. The German photographers paid close attention to the large numbers of stunned American POWs, wrecked and abandoned American vehicles, and the corpses of fallen GIs. It's a different perspective from the usual pictures of advancing and victorious Americans. Also of note is that this book finally lays to rest one of the biggest inaccuracies of the photographic record of the war- proving that the famous picture of cigar chewing SS trooper next to the Malmedy sign is NOT infamous SS Lt. Col. Jochen Peiper.
