Not very good at all.......2007-02-23
Either we should expect to see a descriptive book about Ocean Liners (which this book is certainly not!) or we should expect to find a pictorial overview of the subject. This books misses both targets.
Some other titles by this author include subjects as diverse as; France, Tigers, Robert Mitchum and Sharks. Now we have his offering on the subject of Ocean Liners. Having also studied and reviewed Mr Server's book on Sharks (in which I said "I don't think he's ever seen a live shark in his life!"), this author gives the clear impression he is out to write as many books as possible - with the minimum of information. In so doing, he attempts to fool the reader by including some (but only some!) excellent photographs.
The key to any book about ships is research, research and even more research. Not a concept this author appears to understand.

A colorful but error-filled book.......2003-09-27
A definite buy for a few dollars for the pictures alone, but I have never read a book before or since (I bought the item in 1990) that contained so many factual errors. Several captions for the phtographs were obviously written for melodramatic effect rather than any attempt at veracity.
Okay of a Book, But I've Read Better.......2000-03-06
I'm an ocean liner buff, and pretty much a historian in my own way, and I have a large collection of Ocean Liner books, including this one. All I can say about it, is that it is fine, it's just a run of the mill book, with no real peaks or flaws. The one part I like about the book is the large pictures. I'm also an artist who focuses on ships and landscapes, and I have done pastel and charcol works of many of the ships in the book. I can notice many flaws though, nothing serious, but they're there. I think this may have to do with the fact that this book is from a whole collection of transportation books (The Golden Age of Steam, and The Golden Age of Aviation) and so the author was most likely not an ocean liner historian. I do think, though, this is a good book to use to get younger children interested in ocean liners, with large pictures, and fairly easy to read linear notes, a good book for our future Liner Historians!

A short, but colorful and informative introduction to the subject. The text is written in a lively, lyrical style. I found the section on luxury liners in movies and books quite interesting. An overview not a study in depth, but well done.
Poorly researched, poorly written, well illustrated.......1998-07-01
A low quality work with numerous gross inaccuracies and insufficient narrative. Most of its information seems to come from the works of William Miller. The color illustrations (period posters, advertising materials and sketches) and black & white photos are the highlight of the book, even though most labels do not tell which ship is pictured.

Unwittingly maybe, Rheingold provides a really good account and even reference of the history of computing. He writes well and unlike some CS writers marries his subject with the real world. If you are studying the history of computing I really recommend this over Ceruzzi's book.
Rheingold 10, Gates 0.......2000-12-30
Howard Rheingold, former Editor of the Whole Earth Review and one of the pure-gold original thinkers in the Stewart Brand and Kevin Kelly circle, lays down a serious challange to both decisionmakers and software producers that has yet to be fully understood. Originally published in 1985, this book was a "must read" at the highest levels of advanced information processing circles then, but sadly its brilliant and coherent message has yet to take hold--largely because bureaucratic budgets and office politics are major obstacles to implementing new models where the focus is on empowering the employee rather than crunching financial numbers.
This book is a foundation reading for understanding why the software Bill Gates produces (and the Application Program Interfaces he persists in concealing) will never achieve the objectives that Howard and others believe are within our grasp--a desktop toolkit that not only produces multi-media documents without crashing ten times a day, but one that includes modeling & simulation, structured argument analysis, interactive search and retrieval of the deep web as well as commercial online systems, and geospatially-based heterogeneous data set visualization--and more--the desktop toolkit that emerges logically from Howard's vision must include easy clustering and linking of related data across sets, statistical analysis to reveal anomalies and identify trends in data across time, space, and topic, and a range of data conversion, machine language translation, analog video management, and automated data extraction from text and images. How hard can this be? VERY HARD. Why? Because no one is willing to create a railway guage standard in cyberspace that legally mandates the transparency and stability of Application Program Interfaces (API). Rheingold gets it, Gates does not. What a waste!
Informed and Thoughtful.......2000-07-03
The Afterword alone is worth the price of the book. Rarely does a thinker with the acumen of Rheingold also exhibit a willingness to re-examine, refine, and, on occasion, reverse positions taken a decade or more ago. Rheingold does in a way that is informative and mind-opening. Aside from the mound of solid information and provocative observations about the Internet in human life, Rheingold's prose is as comfortable and welcoming as those toes tucked into the grass as he composes on his laptop. A must read.
Learn from History.......2000-06-30
Entering the 21st century it's still amazing to find that so many of the pioneers of computing are still alive. Rheingold has interviewed many of them over the years and this book is an interesting and valuble contribution to the genre.
The novel feature of the book is the way in which past interviews are brought up to date and the interviewees give their opinions on the differences between what they predicted and what happened.
The writing is excellent and very accessible. The interviewees come across as very normal people (which indeed they are) but it is very easy to forget they were still amongst the movers and shakers of computing in the late 20th century.
I think this book is a valuble work for those who see technology are more than just a vehicle for making money.
Essential reading if you want to understand computing.......2000-06-01
This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand computing all the way from the bare metal to the near-future. It ranks with Fred Brooks' "The Mythical Man Month." If you don't know this stuff, you don't really know what's inside the box, and how it got there.
It's also a pretty entertaining read, though I think the author gives a bit too much credit to von Neuman.

It is evident, that for a number of ecological and technical problems in rivers and lakes a better knowledge of sediment transport and sedimentation is needed together with the ability to predict and simulate sediment behaviour. On the other hand, a stagnation of research in these topics could be observed in the last decades. At the Symposium an attempt was made to present new results in mathematics and natural sciences relevant for the sediment problem. New strategies were discussed to tackle the complexity of the problem. Basic theoretical research and laboratory experiments alone are incomplete without a feedback from field observations and measurements. For that reason well-known researchers from both basic and engineering sciences were invited. Turbulence, non-local phenomena, stability, interaction, feedback systems, self-organization, two-phase flow and chaotic processes, numerical simulations as well as measurement techniques and field results were the keywords of the Symposium. This proceedings are a good source for those interested in the state of the art.

Developments in the modelling of sediment transport in rivers and the interactions with the river-bed have been remarkable over the last two decades. This progress has increased the understanding of the nature of turbulence, and the ability to replicate mathematically simple flow-particle interactions which can be observed experimentally. In addition, quite elegant models of stratigraphic complexes have evolved because of the growing computational power available to scientists. As always, additional knowledge has raised even more intriguing questions and the quest for explanation of phenomena has led to increased specialisation. Therefore, there are few fluid dynamicists or sedimentologists who can successfully span the two disciplines. The intention of this book is to assist various specialists on keeping abreast of current developments in related areas. The book initially focuses on hydrodynamics of turbulent flow, followed by basic two and three-dimensional flow through straight and curved channels and the flow over bed topography. This is then followed by a consideration of initial motion, sediment transport and particle sorting. The potential for modelling fluidsediment interactions is provided at the end of the first section. Linking chapters then follow, considering the preservation potential of fluvial bedforms in the stratigraphic record and the basic variety of channel morphology recognised in sedimentary studies. Subsequent chapters consider reconstructing hydraulic process and fluvial morphology from stratigraphy; the influence of bedform and depositional controls on packing of economically important sedimentary rocks; and recent advances in modelling subsurface fluvial stratigraphy. A final chapter provides a brief view of future perspectives. The objective of this volume is to review recent advances made by geologists and hydrodynamicists in an accessible manner and to promote an increased and fruitful dialogue between sedimentary geologists, geomorphologists and hydrodynamicists.

One of the Best Sediment Compilations Available.......2007-05-31
After the fourth time I chased a promising reference into the library and emerged with this book I knew it was something special. Carling and Dawson put together a very good compilation that remains compelling a decade later. Best was the appropriate (must...resist...obvious...pun) choice to review the flurry of recent developments in bedform mechanics. His 60 page overview is itself worth checking this book out as it is accessible, comprehensive and up to date. Whiting's chapter on mixing was a welcome surprise as he detailed the wide range of processes responsible for bed sorting unlike anything otherwise compiled. Kelsey's overview of modeling is very different the one I would write as it is sweeping in scope and broad in its review of approaches. But it is generally interesting and provides the best synthesis of active layer approaches I found when recently doing some work on the topic. Each of the other bed mechanics papers are worthwhile. Coming from the geologic perspective the text also includes several stratigraphy papers that are outside of my interest or ability to evaluate. However, if the reach the level of applicability of the bed mechanics paper they are highly recommended.

Continental Margin Sedimentation: From Sediment Transport to Sequence Stratigraphy is designed to provide a research resource for scientists studying modern and ancient continental margins, and to be an educational text for advanced students in sedimentology and stratigraphy. It summarizes and integrates our understanding of sedimentary processes and strata associated with fluvial dispersal systems on continental shelves and slopes. The contents deal with time-scales ranging from particle transport at one extreme to deep burial at the other. Insights are presented for margins in general, and with focus on a tectonically active margin (northern California) and a passive margin (New Jersey). These two examples allow detailed examination of the intricate relationships between a wide suite of sedimentary processes and their preserved stratigraphy. Observational studies document the processes and strata found on particular margins, and numerical models and laboratory experimentation provide a quantitative basis for extrapolation in time and space of insights about continental margin sedimentation.
