Great, but not as an intro to Infectious Disease Modeling.......2006-09-26
I purchased this book partially because one review proposed that this text would serve as a good, teach-yourself introduction to mathematical modeling of infectious disease (I.D.). I'm currently in a master's-level class on I.D. modeling which has no specific text requirement, and having only a so-so math background and little knowledge of model construction, I thought a self-teach book would be nice.
Simply said, this book is not for those who stumbled through calculus 1. In fact, unless you're quite well-to-do in the math department, you'll find much of this text either very challenging or impenetrable. The worked-out problems are a very nice touch--one that many authors would do well to note--but the high-level math is too much for this budding epidemiologist.

The title of the book may be misleading.
Attention, this book is for advanced readers in Condensed matter physics. Actually, the book is mostly consisted of some good papers selected by by Anderson. A beginner can read this after he get to know the "basic notions" from basic books.

Brillant and acute, if not somewhat idiosyncratic, close-readings of U.S. literary naturalistic texts. Michaels's buoyant prose and the oblique angles he takes in historicizing the texts make for a provoking, worthwhile read. His arguments concerning the masochistic contract (revision of the more conventional deleuzean understanding) and his exploration of the question 'why does the miser save?' are among the most compelling and thrilling close-reads--rather than 'applying theory' to the texts at hand, he offers ways in which the texts themselves produce critical theory. Fabulous work.
The Gold Standard has certainly depreciated.......2001-07-31
This book, by far, goes on my list of one of the worst books I have ever had the displeasure of reading. Pseudo-clever theoretical jumps about texts that oversimplify and completely decontextualize what the texts say. For example, "The Yellow Wallpaper," commonly thought to present a woman who is confined by her husband/doctor in the attic to lead to her eventual madness. According to Michaels, the short story is not about confinement and restriction, but about over-production of hysteria that the unnamed narrator is forced to engage in because of the ideology of her society. Interesting? maybe. Insightful about the Yellow Wallpaper? Not at all. If you are into post-structural theory masturbating over itself 244 pages, please buy this book.

Apologia for Pakistan.......2005-08-01
Ziring's tome is shorn of any objectivity with the author suffering from an acute case of "nativitis" stemming from his years in Pakistan. Even if one were to ignore his ludicrous caricatures of Nehru and other Indian leaders it is hard to put aside the biases in search of an objective narrative of Pakistan's tumultous political process. For instance, the author alleges that Nehru rejected peace overtures and a "joint defense pact" from Ayub Khan in 1958 that may have resulted in a comprehensive settelement of Kashmir amongst others. There is no evidence of what those proposals were and no explanation of why Pakistan and India ought to have a joint defense pact. The fact that the former has instigated four (three since '58) wars against India only highlights the absurdity of Ayub's offer of joint defense.
In another instance, the author offers an explanation for Pakistan's chronic instability by stating that the British never seriously "tutored their subjects in the art of responsible government". Obviously, that lacuna on the part of the British had a particular effect on Pakistan but not its larger eastern neighbor. And so on...
The book may well find favor among the Pakistani elite as it offers plenty of outs for the many maladies that afflict their nation and are now inflicted on the larger world.
